Louisiana banking is in a very
strong position relative to many other
states that continue to struggle with a
housing slump, high unemployment and
economic challenges, the Louisiana Bankers
Association reported this spring. The vast
majority of Louisiana banks and thrifts
are well capitalized, profitable and in a
good position to serve their customers and
communities. Louisiana banks continue to
lend and in this time of uncertainty offer
a safe haven for customer deposits. Only
about 6% of Louisiana banks posted a loss in
2008, compared to about 24% nationwide.
Still, you’ll want to exercise caution in
choosing your own banking institution in
order to find the right fit for your specific
needs. Compare the interest rates offered on
savings and mortgages. Consider whether
or not a bank’s locations are convenient and
the type of services it offers, such as online
banking and ATMs. Determine what fees
it charges, and if it offers other types of
personal loans. Doing your research can help
you obtain the highest interest rates on your
savings or checking account, and the lowest
rates on your mortgage.
