W|átáàxÜ exÄ|xy XyyÉÜà axãá “For I was hungry and you gave me food.” Matthew 25: 35 Vol. 2 Issue 26 April 2013 Quarterly Newsletter of the Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Effort, Inc., Established 1991 CCDRE DELIVERS SUPPLIES VALUED AT $2,479,883.71 TO DISASTER SURVIVORS IN FIRST 3 MONTHS OF 2013 New Jersey is hit the hardest with New York and Mississippi not far behind Thanks to faithful contributors and volunteers, CCDRE stays prepared! SPRING STORMS UPSET THE SOUTH Twenty-two tornadoes tore through Tennessee, the second biggest outbreak of tornadoes in Middle Tennessee recorded history, according to the National Weather Service. Northwest Georgia reported two deaths and suffered millions of dollars in damage. Emergency Management agencies encourage citizens to always be prepared for the unexpected by staying informed, stocking supplies and making a plan. • A February tornado leaves miles of destruction in Hattisburg, MS similar to the above photo FROM THE DESK OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Joe L. Dudney Vice President/Executive Director This article will focus on the assistance provided to those in the path of Hurricane Sandy after it first made landfall on October 29th of 2012 near Atlantic City, New Jersey. There were a known 285 fatalities from this storm which was approximately 900 miles wide. We began making phone calls to congregations immediately. We contacted congregations we had worked with after Hurricane Irene hit the same area in August of 2011 and other congregations. After making the necessary arrangements with several church leaders in the disaster area our → first semi truck left the CCDRE Operations Center on October 31st for the Roosevelt-Freeport Church of Christ in Roosevelt, NY. Members from the RooseveltFreeport and the Long Island Church of Christ in Bay Shore, NY unloaded the shipment of food, cleaning supplies, and clothing into a building that the Roosevelt-Freeport Church had purchased hoping to remodel it into their new church building. From the end of October through the end of March 2013, there have been 54 shipments of food, cleaning supplies, clothing, blankets, bedding, detergent, bleach, furniture, appliances, and frozen dinners delivered to the Northeast. Notice the chart below for the total delivered for the first 3 months of this year. Thanks again for the help from the congregations, individuals, volunteers, and truck drivers who support this work so faithfully. • ******** ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF OUTREACH & FOLLOW-UP Ralph Coles In the last 3 months we have been dealing with the needs of disaster survivors in Adairsville and Calhoun, GA; New Orleans, LA; Hattiesburg, MS; Union Beach and Sewell in NJ; Capitan, NM; Bay Shore, NY and Coble, TN. We have been hearing great reports from the northeast → Ralph Coles after hurricane Sandy invaded the area. The churches on Long Island and Union Beach and Toms River in New Jersey have braved the storms, distress and hardships of winter weather. Many church members have delivered food and supplies to their communities and have touched people in a physical and spiritual way. They have set up 100’s of Bible studies, holding community gospel meetings, and evangelism teams have been formed to go out and visit with families who are interested in hearing about the Gospel of Christ. I visited the Faulkner University, set up our display and told about the CCDRE efforts. Our investment in the new warehouse has paid off as we sent out 4 truck loads of frozen dinners which were given out in one day. • TOTAL ASSISTANCE DELIVERED JANUARY THRU MARCH 2013 Georgia $ Louisiana $ emi truck. 274,929.27 Mississippi $ 544,875.83 New Mexico $ 91,238.86 New Jersey $ 831,871.50 New York Tennessee $ 8,934.00 TOTAL $ 2,479,883.71 2 $ 22,742.00 705,292.25 ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT Dwane Casteel After Hurricane Sandy struck in the northeastern quarter of our country many people who talked to me expressed the same thought: More people are expressing positive thoughts about Churches of Christ than they have ever heard before. We have sent some $3 million of relief supplies to 10 congregations, and the people are continuing to work in assisting victims who have lost so much. During the past 3 months I have made 15 presentations/updates about the work of CCDRE to the following: Southwest Church of Christ in Hartford, Connecticut. In Maryland the Westside Church and East Baltimore Church in Baltimore; the Church of Christ in Easton; the Chesapeake Church in Grasonville; the Church in Hagerstown; the Church in Olney; St. Mary’s County Church in California, MD; Oxon Hill Church in Temple Hills. In Pennsylvania I had the privilege of presenting the program to the Church of Christ in Glen Rock and Mt. Holly Springs. I also attended a church leaders meeting→ hosted by the Church of Christ in Camp Hill, PA. In Virginia I made a presentation at the Church of Christ in Strasburg, and also attended a church leaders’ meeting in Fredericksburg hosted by the North Virginia Church and a meeting hosted by the Church of Christ in Falls Church, VA. I will soon set up our display and speak at the following lectureships on the topic, “How Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Benefits Outreach:” Ohio Valley University, Vienna, West Virginia; Lectureship hosted by the Coventry Hills Church of Christ in Pottstown, Pennsylvania; New England Lectures, Taunton, Massachusetts; Mid-Atlantic Lectures, New Castle, Delaware. Please stop by our display at these lectures for additional information and arrange for someone to come to your congregation and make a presentation about how you can help at a time of a disaster. • ******** WORDS FROM THE LONG ISLAND CHURCH OF CHRIST, BAY SHORE, NY “We have seen the grace and love of the Lord in the way you sought us out and helped our community with a generosity unequaled to any we have seen. “We have reached out to over 500 families, and made countless gospel presentations in the boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn. “We are emphasizing that the greatest need of all is the forgiveness of sins in Jesus. No one has refused the fact that God did this to get everyone’s attention to their need of salvation.” • 3 ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT Dennis McClintock Greetings from Missouri! Last week I was in Tulsa, OK at the Tulsa Workshop, set up our display booth there and visited with many people from several states. In the next few weeks I will be in Minnesota where I will share the CCDRE work with churches in Richfield, Park Rapids, Minneapolis, and Mankato. My first trip will be to Mena, AR where I will meet with several families to speak about CCDRE but also discuss with them how they may become C.E.R.T. (Community Emergency Response Team) certified so they are ready to go to work in a community when a disaster strikes. There are many things a church can do to prepare for a disaster, and because of experience I have with C.E.R.T., I am available to discuss this with your congregation. I would like to share with you the great work that CCDRE is doing, thanks to the many who support this work with their time and finances. If you would like more information I may be reached at toll-free 1-888-541-2848. • ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF OUTREACH & FOLLOWUP Mike Lewis Tornadoes hit the Georgia area of Adairsville/Calhoun and Hattiesburg, Mississippi where we delivered food, personal care items, cleaning supplies, water, baby supplies, linens, etc., but our main focus has been on Hurricane Sandy victims in the northeast. Bible studies are taking place, people are hearing God’s word, and studying things they have never heard before! Our support of those in the path of Hurricane Sandy has slowed down considerably even though there is still a need. Our financial support from you controls what we can do and for how long. Those not involved directly in this effort are no longer hearing about aftermath in areas of the country because the press no longer considers it ‘A Headline,’ so our financial support tapers off. The press also does not raise the fact that when there is this much damage, it will be many months before some can move back ‘home.’ Several employers closed their business after the storm, so now many are without work, without a place to→ live, and are receiving no aid from a government organization. (They left early in the year.) Many local community members do not know where to turn. I have been told by members of the congregations we have helped that the name ‘Church of Christ’ is now known by people in the hurricane path because of how local congregations have been able to assist them with supplies provided by CCDRE. We ask you to please continue to pray for those that will need help for months to come, and continue to support CCDRE so we can carry on this effort. • ******** ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT Ken Leonard In late April and early May, look for me at our table at the Pepperdine Lectureships. If you would like for me to come to your congregation while I am in California or driving through Arizona, Nevada or New Mexico, April and May would be a good time. You may contact me at [email protected] or on my cell phone 615-330-7053, and you can always find me on Facebook, Ken Leonard Forney, Texas. In late May and early June I will try to stay close to home in TX, so that would be a good time to schedule me to visit in the Forney area. I will be at the Regional Church of Christ Lectureship in Midland, TX on June 16 through 20. Then I will be at the Red River Encampment in New Mexico June 22 through 27. I will be scheduling to speak at churches in west TX in June and New Mexico in July. The last of July I will be in northwestern CA and in August I→ 4 Ken Leonard have scheduled one church in Seattle and plan to spend several weeks in Washington. I would be glad to put churches along the way there and back in Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho and Oregon on the schedule for August and September. In March I attended the Churches of Christ National Lectureship in Houston. Besides great preaching I was able to hear some terrific singing. It turned out to be an inspiring combination for me, and I wrote a song and decided to include one verse in my report. It is called “Jesus, Please Send Me.” There’s a family who’s pleading tonight Praying everything turns out alright Seeking solace and safety from the storm Please take care of their needs If it’s shelter or something to eat Remind them You still care And do it through me. CHORUS (quick time) Hold them in Your arms, Let them know Your love is always there. When they feel alone Let them see the fellowship we share. When they are afraid Shine Your light and chase away despair. Jesus, please send me To answer their prayer. • ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT Ken Lowry Thank you to all of the congregations and individuals that continue to support CCDRE, Inc. It is an encouragement to all of us when we have the privilege to meet you and to discuss the efforts of CCDRE, Inc. Your prayers and financial support, as well as the physical efforts of many people, are the keys to success in our efforts to provide assistance so that local congregations of the Church of Christ can reach out to those impacted by disasters. → During the past 3 months we have been fortunate to visit many congregations in Alabama, Tennessee and Hawaii. In Huntsville, AL we spoke with brethren at Twickenham, Mayfair, Chase Park, Northwest, Lincoln and West Huntsville. In Decatur, AL we visited the Grant St. Beltline and Austinville congregations. We also met with the Broad St. congregation in Scottsboro, AL and Ashville Rd in Leeds, AL. In the Birmingham, AL area we were honored to worship and meet with congregations at Hoover, Riverchase, Roebuck Pkwy, Heritage Place and Decatur Hwy In Gardendale. One of the great opportunities we had was to attend and set up our display at the Freed-Hardeman University Annual Bible Lectureship in Henderson, TN. While on a personal visit, we had opportunity to meet with several congregations in Hawaii, including Pearl Harbor, Honolulu and on the island of Maui. Thanks to our supporters in those areas. In TN we were blessed to → visit Cottage Grove and Wildersville congregations. If we can come to your congregation or assist in any way with information about CCDRE, please call 919-270-8770 or email [email protected]. • ******** SHAME, SHAME According to a new report by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, 1.2 billion tons of food – as much as 50% of the world’s total production – gets thrown away. After Jesus miraculously fed over 5,000, John writes that He said, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” ******** The Disaster Relief Effort News is printed through the courtesy of Pollock Printing Co., Nashville, TN. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------□ Check here, if you DO NOT want to receive our Newsletter by mail. That is the attitude of some of us in regard to acquiring patience, a virtue which Paul identified to the Galatians as being an evidence of the Holy Spirit living in our heart. Abram (later called Abraham) and Sarai (later called Sarah) had returned to Canaan from Egypt where they had spent some time due to a famine in Canaan which is Israel today. Edna M. Walling While in Egypt, Abram acquired a Newsletter Editor handmaid for Sarai whose name was Hagar. Now that they were back in Canaan, God told Abram, “Lift up your eyes from where you are and look north and south, east and west. All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever. I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted.” Years before, God told Abram, “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing, and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” Now, Abram and Sarai were back in Canaan. They must have remembered God’s promise, but were confused because they still had no offspring. They waited and waited, but still no offspring. Sarai decided it was time for her to help God by giving her handmaid, Hagar, to Abram as a wife. Abram apparently thought this was a pretty good idea and didn’t object. Ishmael was soon born as the son of Abram and Hagar. Sarai eventually gave birth to Isaac, the promised offspring, and his and Ishmael’s descendants are still fighting today. If Sarai had had the patience and faith to wait on the Lord, the picture in the Middle East might be different today. Let’s pray for more faith and patience. •
