It is hard to believe that we are already in May, where has that time gone?
The Communities for Children Team has been out and about during the last three
months sharing with children and their families at our school holiday activities, fishing,
body boarding and learning to ride a bike right sessions.
We participated in the launch of Youth Week, spent time organising children’s art for the
2016 Children’s Art Exhibition which will be held on the 15th May at the Woodcroft
Library, visited businesses that the community nominated in the Communities for
Children Child Friendly Business Awards 2015 and finalised our Community Strategic Plan
using the information the community told us during the community consultation.
Many of you will know Jodie Cook from the many community
information emails that she sends out, a much valued function
of Communities for Children. Jodie has gained a new position
within the State Government and her last day with
Anglicare SA was Friday 8th May.
Jodie has been with AnglicareSA for over 9 years and will be
greatly missed. Not only by the C4C team and Anglicare SA but
also by many community members and service providers, she
has been an integral part of the C4C team. We wish Jodie all the
very best as she starts her new role. Community
information will continue to be sent using the Gmail address.
Winter is well on its way and on page 16 of the newsletter there are some fabulous
suggestions of cool things to do in autumn no matter your age, before it gets here.
The Communities for Children Onkaparinga team have been working on refreshing our
logo and resources. The refreshed logo will be launched mid year and will feature in our
next newsletter, we hope that you like it as much as we do.
There are many wonderful activities occurring in the community, we hope that you and
your family are able to participate in some, if not all of these.
Regards Janine

Communities for Children Onkaparinga Consultation
The Communities for Children team were out and about at the end of 2014 and the first two months of
this year talking to children, parents and service providers about what is important to them.
The children that we talked to shared with us that family were important to them
including the family pets, music and friends, feeling safe, having someone to
share their successes and issues as they arose, knowing they were listened to and
spending time with people who love them were also important to them.
Many parents and community members talked about the community spirit and
the beautiful natural environment in the south and the greatest strengths from a service providers
perspective, was families resilience, resourcefulness and connection to each other and their community.
Earlier this year over 200 community members responded to the electronic and face to face surveys
sharing with us important information about the strengths of the communities and the sorts of issues
children and families are facing along with ideas for activities that could assist with addressing these.
Thank you for taking the time to complete the survey and sharing your thoughts and ideas.
5 lucky community members were randomly selected to receive a $50 gift basket.
Congratulations to Bridget, Amanda, Jenny, David and Dace.
The number one challenge that the community talked about in the surveys was the cost of daily living
including things such as:







Budgeting and cooking nutritional snacks/foods on a budget
Children being able to participate in free activities and sport after school
Supporting parents by providing information and support
Parents being emotionally available for children
Unemployment and job readiness
Homelessness
Finding affordable housing
The information that was gathered through the surveys and through sitting and talking to people within
the community, service providers and community networks has been used to determine the sorts of activities that will be funded through Communities for Children during 2015 /2017.
We are currently working with the Department of Social Services to develop our Activity Plan.
In future newsletters we will highlight for you the Communities for
Children Activities. Watch this space

Who will be in the 2016
Children’s Art Calendar?
Children within the Communities for Children site have been
participating in the State-wide Communities for Children art
project drawing their vision of ‘What is important’ with a small
story attached to each picture. The ‘Important to Me’ project is
a collaboration between six South Australian Communities for Children sites. Art
work will be selected to be included in the 2016 Children's Voice calendar.
You are all invited to attend the Communities for Children, children’s art exhibition on
Friday 15 May at Woodcroft Library between 4 and 7pm.
Come along there will be lots of fun things to do such as
Face Painting, Balloon Twisting, Glitter Tattoos, Magician and
participating in the art exhibition by doing your own piece of art!
There will also be an opportunity for families and children who come along to the event to vote for
their favourite piece of art, the top 5 pieces of art work selected will appear in the 2016 Children’s
Voices calendar. Make sure you come along and have your say.
If you would like more information about the upcoming exhibition please contact Belinda at

Local Unsung Heroes
Communities for Children Onkaparinga would like to acknowledge all the behind the
scenes, often unnoticed amazing things that people in our community are doing.
Is there someone in your local community that works tirelessly without expecting a
thank you or because they love their community i.e. the person who picks up
rubbish on the beach or the people who run the local Facebook forums?
These people embody community spirit and keep on giving their time and energy in so many different
ways and inspire people to do the same, creating a flow on effect that fills our communities with hope.
We would like to use this space in upcoming newsletters to acknowledge these individuals
or groups that do all these awesome things as part of everyday life.
Please email your local unsung hero story to [email protected] and we will print one or two of these
per newsletter to acknowledge the amazing community spirit

School Holiday Activities
Communities for Children Onkaparinga provided free school holiday activities during April 2015.
Activities included free fishing, body boarding lessons and Ride Your Bike Right sessions.
40 children participated in the free fishing and body boarding lessons run by Port
Noarlunga Aquatic Centre’s Penny and Ashley, who provided much knowledge and
information on the local aquatic areas at the beautiful Port Noarlunga Beach.
For more info visit: www.pnac.com.au
Communities for Children Onkaparinga have been running Ride Your Bike Right sessions for the past 2
years with many children learning to ride their bikes without trainer wheels for the very first time. The
sessions were provided free for community members and were held at Seaford Rise and O’Sullivan
Beach Primary Schools. These sessions were the most successful for children on training wheels with
the majority ready to throw away the trainer wheels by the end of the session. Thanks to Lee-Anne
Fleming from Ride A Bike Right who does an awesome job with all the children, teaching them new
skills so they can ride safely and confidently.

Dry July is a not-for-profit organisation
determined to improve the lives of
adults living with cancer through an
online social community giving up booze
for the month of July. Whether joining as
a part of a team or as an individual, participants take on the 31 days of July to
raise funds and directly help adults living
with cancer and their families to improve
their quality of life.
