Dr. Rosentrater receives Lifetime Achievement Award
By Lola Whitmer
Editor
BREMEN— Family Physician, Dr. David
Rosentrater has been practicing family medicine, full time, in the community for 30 years.
One of three physicians who practice at
Community Family Physicians on Plymouth
Street, Rosentrater has lived in the community since 1996. With approximately nine
years till he retires, Rosentrater was recently
awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award
from the Bremen Chamber of Commerce.
On Thursday, Aug. 11, the Chamber
announced that Dr. Rosentrater was one of
three recipients voted on by the community
to receive the honor. The community voted
for Dr. Rosentrater, Keith Board and Ed
Beery, who have each dedicated decades to
the people in the community.
“I’m honored to receive this award,” said
Dr. Rosentrater. “Even more so, it has been
an honor for the last 30 years to have people
trust me with their healthcare. It is even
more rewarding to have been entrusted by
many in the community with the care of
their health. I wish to thank the community
for allowing me to practice in the community and for putting their trust in me.”
In July of 1986, Rosentrater started his
practice here in the community, spending
his time part time in Bourbon and part time
in Bremen during his first year of practice.
Born in CA, and raised mostly in Nappanee,
Rosentrater attended Messiah College in
Grantham, PA and Indiana University
School of Medicine. Serving his residency
out at St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove,
Dr. Rosentrater looked at five other prac-
tices before settling locally with Community
Family Physicians.
“The small town and the small town hospital, along with Dr. Snyder, were a good
fit,” said Dr. Rosentrater who joined Dr.
Snyder at Community Family Physicians 30
years ago. Dr. Snyder retired from practice
eight years ago.
“I like the fact that it actually is a community where people know each other and
care about each other,” said Dr. Rosentrater.
“I would not be able to practice alone; I
am not a business person. I have needed
partners to practice with and to manage the
business end of things and I am thankful
for those partners. Also I have been blessed
with wonderful coworkers who treat our
patients very well. Their good treatment of
our patients ends up reflecting favorably
on me, and I get the credit as the physician,
even though they have been an essential
part of the good treatment that the patients
have received.”
Dr. Rosentrater currently practices with
Dr. Michael McClaid and Dr. Paul Gettinger
and has practiced alongside them for a little
over a decade.
Being a family physician has given Dr.
Rosentrater the opportunity to take care
of people, show them kindness and compassion daily, according to the 58 year old
doctor.
“The reason I practice is because I want
to serve my patients and in serving my
patients I am at the same time fulfilling my
call to serve God,” said Dr. Rosentrater. “I
would like being a servant to be my ultimate
reward and I’m not looking for an award in

Dr. David Rosentrater was recently named as a 2016
Lifetime Achievement Award recipient by the Bremen

the doctor who has served the community for 30 years was
selected to be honored with the award for his dedication
and devotion to the people of the community. The 58-yearold family physician constructs a balloon sword for a young
patient at Community Family Physicians. The caring and
compassionate doctor has constructed many thousand balloon objects through out his career to assist with soothing
and relaxing young patients who visit his practice.
Bremen’s own Nashville rising
star to perform at Oktoberfest
By Lola Whitmer
Editor
BREMEN— A locally born and raised
musician has signed on to perform at this
year's revival of the Oktoberfest festival.
Regan Lorraine Freeman will be performing
for one night only, Friday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m.
on the main stage located near the corner of
Jackson and Plymouth Street.
Freeman, known to most in the community by her maiden name of Graverson, now
resides in Nashville, TN where she is pursuing her musical career as an Americana-stlye
musician and vocalist.
"This will be our band's first show since
the release of my full length album," said
Freeman. "Copies will be available for purchase the evening of the performance at

society's pressures of how life should be
played out. You can grow so much more
and in so many other ways by just forcing
yourself in to uncomfortable situations; by
removing the safety net for a minute. It's a
tougher choice to make, but it has everything to do with who I am now," she continued, discussing her choice to refrain from
college courses.
Starting out playing small local venues
with her high school bandmates, Freeman
has been involved in music for a total of 16
years. She credits her performances around
South Bend, Mishawaka, Nappanee and
Goshen for the confidence to tackle the
Nashville music scene.
Freeman has been residing in Nashville
for the past 13 years, playing venues all over
the city. With tours out east and through out
Indiana and the midwest, Freeman stated
that she has honed her skills and since her
last performance in the area at The Goshen
Theatre, has established a solid band.
"They'll all be on stage with me at
Oktoberfest and I can't wait to show them
off," said Freeman of her bandmates. "These
boys are the cream of the crop. I'm really
excited to play and just hang out with the
community like the local I used to be."
Putting together a CD full of songs she has
written herself consumes a lot of time for the
Bremen born native, but when she's not busy
with work, Freeman enjoys taking in one of
many shows available in the country music
capital, and spending time with her family
and friends.
"I'm so excited to finally launch this album
out in to the world," said Freeman. "I was
offered a type of publishing deal that I
couldn't refuse which led to the making of
this record and consequently connected me
to some of the top musicians in Nashville to
record with. It was just days on days of playing Americana music with these guys, eating
tacos, writing some more and then doing it
all over again. It was so dreamy. I hope it's as
equally dreamy to the listener as the process
was for me."
With a handful of new songs ready to
be recorded, Freeman has great plans for
the future and is working with her music
producer to land placements in film and
television.
Having left behind a community that
she loves and misses deeply, Freeman is
ecstatic about performing at the upcoming
Oktoberfest revival.
"It wasn't your typical 'teenager can't wait
to leave small town' situation either," said
Freeman. "I loved my home. I loved Bremen
and all it's quaintness. I still do. Over the
past couple years, it's seemed a little more
lively in Bremen. More hustle and bustle.

selected by the community to receive the Lifetime
Achievement Award, Dr.
Rosentrater stated that he
felt he was merely doing his
job as a physician and as a
servant of God.
In 2000, Dr. Rosentrater
was recognized as the
Indiana Family Practice
Physician of the year and
was awarded Memorial
Hospital’s
Residency
Teacher of the Year in previous years.
“I enjoy educating peo-
ple,” said Dr. Rosentrater.
“I think practicing medicine
has given me the opportunity to do that.”
Outside his practice, the
long-time local physician is
very involved in his church,
teaching a high school
Sunday school class and
coaching a Bible quiz team.
Musically inclined, the doc
also plays the drums at
his church. He also enjoys
spending time with his wife,
children and grandchildren,
baking bread and staying
active by riding his bicycle.

Partial knees
As our knees wear out, the
articular cartilage (the shiny
white stuff) thins, fluid and
swelling increase, range of
motion worsens and painful,
stiff joints result. Knee arthritis
is extremely common, and
knee replacement surgeries
are extremely common, with
about 600,000 done annually.
Knee replacement surgeries
involve removing worn
cartilage and replacing it with
metal and high-tech plastic.
A “total” knee removes all
the cartilage in the knee.
A “partial” knee removes
cartilage only from the affected
side. A partial’s advantage is
less cutting, quicker healing
and more range of motion,
and it’s better for more
active patients.
Just as all cars are not the
same, not all partials are the
same. A “mobile-bearing”
partial, where the plastic
moves between metal parts,
outperformed and outlasted
“fixed-bearing” partials where
the plastic does not move.
Mobile-bearing partial knees
have a 15-year result of over
93 percent — nearly equal
to total knees — meaning
93 percent of all patients
were happy and their implant
was intact.
Ultimately, knee replacement
surgery, done correctly,
effectively reduces pain and
restores function. And my goal
is to get Your Life in Motion.

Human Recycling
Behaviors Observed at
the Blueberry Festival
Recycling club
Patricia A. Andrews
By Marianne Peters
I just finished my seventh year as Marshall County
Blueberry Festival Recycling Coordinator. After this long,
I’ve become a student of human nature--at least when it
comes to recycling. Here are a few behaviors I’ve noticed.
Trash and recycling are like peas and carrots – they have
to go together. A recycle bin by itself becomes a trash can. A
trash can by itself fills up with recyclables. Paired containers
are always, always the best option. And by paired, I mean
literally touching
each other—even
a foot or so apart
makes a difference, believe it or
not.

Peters
carry their plastic
bottles home (you
know who you
are!). People who don’t want to recycle won’t, no matter how
many bins they might see. However, people who aren’t particular will recycle if the bins are available, clearly labeled,
and convenient.
Recycling has become more mainstream, and more people
choose to recycle now than they did when we started recycling at the Blueberry Festival. Fewer people put their trash
in recycle bins at the Festival. I often tell people that, back
in 2009 when we started, it wasn’t unusual to find corn cobs
and turkey legs in the bins just because they fit through the
hole at the top! I’m glad we didn’t give up just because it was
rough-going the first few years.
Recyclables have changed since the Festival instituted
recycling. Back in 2009, plastic and aluminum were thicker
and heavier. More people drank soda. Now, most of the
recyclables are water bottles made of paper-thin plastic.
Aluminum cans are also much thinner. This makes for lighter
total weights, so even though we are not recycling as many
tons, we are actually recycling more materials than ever.
True, many people don’t recycle at the Festival, and It’s
easy to feel discouraged or even cynical. However, I think
most Festival patrons who don’t recycle are not inherently
lazy people who don’t care about the environment. They
are from out of town, often trying to keep track of family
members in the big crowds. They aren’t at the Festival to
recycle—they are there to have fun.
Every year I learn more about making event recycling
work. It’s not just about the bins—it’s learning about human
behavior, too.

A total of 347 plastic caps and lids have been collected,
cleaned and recycled by the students who participate in
the weekly Caps of Benches Recycling Club at Bremen
Elementary Middle School (BEMS). An idea generated by
then second-grader, James Wickens, the recycling club
was founded last spring after Wickens and his mother, Mrs.
Sabrina Wickens (BEMS Launch teacher) discovered the ability to turn recycled caps and lids in to plastic benches. Mrs.
Wickens facilitates the weekly recycling club on Thursdays,
directly after school.
Last week Wickens and his mother made a trip to the
Recycling Depot in Plymouth carrying another 152 pounds
of caps. The caps and lids will be melted down and turned
in to a bench that will be placed for use on school property.
The entire community is encouraged to continue sending
in plastic caps and lids to the BEMS office or with students.
The goal of 400 caps and lids must be reached by the end of
Oct. to be able to attain a bench this fall.

Talent Show at Oktoberfest
Article Provided
BREMEN— As part of Bremen’s Oktoberfest celebration,
Bremen 2016 will host a talent show on Sunday afternoon,
October 9.
The purpose of the Oktoberfest Talent Show is to showcase local talent. It will not be a contest.
The Talent Show will be one-hour long, beginning around
2 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
“We are looking for acts of every kind, with people and
groups of every age performing,” Jim Morse, coordinator of
the Talent Show for Bremen 2016, said.
Morse emphasizes that both solo and group performances
are welcome. It is also expected that there will be a great
diversity of acts, beyond musical performances.
“The Talent Show will only be about one hour long,”
Morse said. “We will fill our slots based on the order of
people contacting us. So, if you’re interested, call soon. I
anticipate we will fill up our hour very quickly. With that
said, we are also going to make sure as many people as possible are a part of the show.”

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are a rock
group that have been around since the
early 80’s. Their latest album, “The
Getaway”, just proves that they are still
here and don’t plan on going anywhere
anytime soon. “The Getaway” is a subtle fusion of off-beat rock and funk that
has turned into a sound all their own.
The album starts with the title
track, ‘The Getaway’. With a thick
funk beat that gets you bobbing your
head almost immediately, you can feel
yourself starting to sing along, and
feel it putting a little bounce in your
step; I know that I had a bounce in
mine! “Dark Necessities” seems to
slow things down a little bit, yet still
keeping that quick upbeat tempo; it
seems like a contradiction in styles.
The unique combination grabs your
attention with such differences that
work so well together.
“Goodbye Angels” feels like a throwback to the Red Hot Chili Peppers
themselves; almost a combination of
their songs “Can’t Stop” and “Snow”
which are two vastly different songs.
The meld works very well though. “Go
Robot” feels like it could have been a
disco/funk hit had it been released in

This album is no “Stadium

“The Getaway” was a genuine treat to

Lady Lions outlast Adams in three
By James Costello

BREMEN — Bremen volleyball doesn’t have a whole
lot of depth this season. On
the positive side, though,
it’s conditioned the Lady
Lions to go the distance.
Bremen outlasted visiting South Bend Adams in a

Pilgrims top Lions in
sectional rivalry meet

BREMEN — Plymouth’s meeting with Bremen may not
be a conference match, but to Bremen, the Pilgrims are their
best look at how they will stand in sectionals.
Plymouth beat Bremen on the Lions’ turf Sept. 7, 4-1.
“Plymouth is always our goal because we are in the same
sectional, and if we can play with Plymouth, we have a
chance at winning sectionals, which we haven’t done in a
long time,” said Bremen head coach Mark Wagner. “So I
mean this was always a rivalry match for us. . .So this is our
chance to find out if we are any good. I think all our points
were contested tonight. We only won one, but none of them
were wipeouts. So we were pleased with that.”
“They are going to play us as tough as anybody, and
it held true tonight,” said Plymouth coach Michael Delp.
“Typical Plymouth-Bremen match, county rivals, and they
played us tough on all five courts. We wouldn’t expect anything less from them. Very fortunate to get away with a 4-1
win today.
As dusk settled over the courts, Bremen’s Zach Burkholder
and Plymouth’s Zach Moser continued to battle it out on the
court alone. With the tiebreaking third set tied at 4-4, the two
players fought for the winning game, Moser hit a deep shot
to the edge of the court. Burkholder was forced to make a
dash for an over-the-shoulder save, but with Burkholder
thrown off balance, Moser hit the return straight into the
ground for a 5-4 turn in the match.
As spectators dispersed, the two continued to play
through several long rallies. The two were evenly matched
in play, but with some low shots and hard hits, Burkholder
concluded the match with a 7-5 victory, winning the only
match for Bremen on the night.
“Both (Burkholder and Moser) you could tell didn’t want
to give up,” said Wagner. “Either of them could have given
in and let the other one win when they went into the third
set. It was pretty hot tonight. It cooled off a little bit as the
night went on, but they were probably here playing for more
than two hours. . .Usually, when a match goes to three sets,
it means they are pretty even, and none of the other matches
went to three sets.”
“(Bremen) came out ready to go, and we were kind of on
our heels early on,” said Delp. “They battled us tough at 3
singles, 1 singles. Even though 2 singles match score-wise
didn’t end up looking close, there were a lot of close games
in there, long rallies, deuce games. So it was competitive on
all five courts.”
At 1 singles, Bremen’s Bryce Sterling lost the first set via
a lopsided 6-1 score against John Gerard, but he came back
in the second for a much closer 7-5 loss. Bremen 2 singles
player Carter Filchak lost to Mitch Rose, 6-3, 6-1. One
doubles partners Jake Strehler and Chandler Snyder fell 6-3,
6-4 against Plymouth’s Grant Clady and Nick Felke, while
Plymouth’s 2 doubles Hudson Yoder and Tommy Holloway
defeated Bremen’s Bryce Tolle and Bryce Ginter, 6-3, 6-2.

Trojans shut out by Bremen
Whitney Worthen
Sports Writer
BREMEN — The rain fell, Bremen’s crowd cheered, and
the Friday night lights shined down — it was the picture
perfect football game…except for Triton.
Bremen shutout Triton Friday night at home with a 42-0
victory.
“We prepared for this weekend,” said Bremen head coach
Jordan Leeper. “The kids did a great job of executing what
we planned, and we came out and executed early on in the
first quarter, (putting) up two quick scores (to) set the tone
for the game.”
“We came out with some goals and didn’t achieve those
goals,” said Triton head coach Ron Brown. “We shot ourselves in the foot multiple times by having penalties all over
the field, and we proceeded to turn the ball over.”
He added, “We couldn’t (maintain the ball) because for
some reason, we didn’t run the right direction to receive
hand offs — two plays in-a-row… so when you don’t do the
basics of the game right, there’s really no excuses or silver
lining to throw out there.”
Bremen outplayed Triton in all areas. While Bremen gave
up two fumbles on the night, the Lions rushed for a total
of 269 yards and passed for 146. Grant Klockow led the
team with 130 yards in 14 rushes. Briley Leeper followed
him rushing for 59 out of seven runs. Matt Box went six for
seven in passing for 146 yards. The favored wide receiver
was Even Martin with two catches on the night for 56 yards.
Klockow also managed to pull in a catch for 38 yards.
Triton struggled to gather any yards on the night. Ethan
Berry led the team in gained yardage with a total of 33,
rushing for 17 in 13 runs and 16 on his sole catch. D’Angelo
Shumpert followed behind him with an 11-yard catch.
Triton’s standout player ended up Drew Stitcher who managed to coordinate the defense effectively enough to stop
several of Bremen’s runs in the second. He also recovered a
forced fumble on the night.
“Matt Box is doing a fantastic job for us, putting us in very
good situations,” said Leeper. “(He’s) calling audibles, calling plays, changing play of the line, and he’s doing a great
job for us.”
“I had a standout player, Drew Stitcher,” said Brown. “He
coordinated the defense when we had to make adjustments.
I think he recovered a forced fumble (and) was there for
multiple tackles.”
Bremen lined up one its own 34 with only two yards
left in its first down drive. Handing it off to running back
Mason Brown, Bremen ran the ball up to the 50. Triton,
however, forced the fumble and managed to recover it on
its own 48.
Failing to gain more than a yard on the first two attempts,
Triton lined up at its own 47 with 3 and 9 to go. Quarterback
James Snyder handed it off to running back Berry, who managed to break a few tackles and picked up 13 on the run, but
the refs threw a flag on the playing, calling unsportsmanlike
conduct against Bremen for a 15-yard penalty.
Triton, on the Bremen 25, set up in the best scoring position they had on the night, but with a yard loss on the first
play and a five-yard penalty on the second, Triton looked
at 2 and 16 on the Bremen’s 30. Snyder hiked the ball, looking for the pass. Spotting Caden Marr near Bremen’s 15, he
blasted the ball toward him, but Bremen’s Klockow picked
off the ball and returned it to the Bremen 25, shutting down
Triton’s best scoring opportunity of the night at the end of
the first quarter.
“Just being able to move the football up-and-down the
field (helped us win),” said Leeper. “Then our defense…
really bought into the game plan — to get the shutout this
week, and that’s what is important.”
“You have to have more than (three) players out there
doing stuff,” said Brown. “I’m sure there’s other kids (who
had) highlights. It’s not that all of them did horrible, but we
have to play every single play. Or we can’t expect any different results.”

DoN’t I get two free DeNtal cleaNINgs a year?
A lot of people are under the impression that their dental insurance provides two
free cleanings a year; this is not entirely true. Most insurance companies provide
the insured with an annual maximum benefit for all covered services. Once the
maximum benefit has been used, the plan does not pay for any other services
whether it be cleanings, fillings or major services until the plan renews, which in
most cases is the first of January. If you have extensive dental treatment throughout
the year and are scheduled for a cleaning, you may want to contact your insurance
company to verify if you have enough remaining benefits to cover your appointment.
We would like to stress the importance of routine exams and cleanings regardless
of insurance coverage. We believe maintaining good oral health is an investment
worth making and will reduce your dental expense in the long run.
New patients always welcomed!
