Langhorne, Pa., 256-213, to win
the PBA Xtra Frame Lubbock
Sports Southwest Open and his
first PBA Tour title Sunday at
South Plains Lanes.
Tackett, PBA’s 2013 Rookie
of the Year, opened the title
match with three single-pin
spares, but made a few adjustments and followed with his
string of seven strikes to run
away from O’Neill, who is
arguably the hottest player
in professional bowling this
summer. O’Neill came into the
Lubbock event fresh off wins in
the PBA Oklahoma Open and
Oklahoma’s Grand Casino Hotel
& Resort King of the Swing, a
multi-event summer series in
which he also had two thirdplace finishes.
Tackett, 22, had previously
finished second in the 2014
USBC Masters and the 2014
Oklahoma Open. Along with
his first PBA Tour title, he won
a $15,000 first prize.
“A lot of people took a
chance on me when I first
came out on tour, so I want
to thank all of them,” Tackett
said. “This one is for them.”
O’Neill advanced to the title
match with a 267-235 victory
over 2014 PBA Southwest Region Player of the Year Shawn
Maldonado, a two-handed
player from Houston, Texas.
Maldonado was trying for his
first PBA Tour title.
In the first match, Maldonado rallied from a 45-pin deficit

League
Night the
Way it
Should Be
Thomas Mendonca sent in a
great little story on a league he
bowls in at AMF Sparetime.
The moral of this story is
there are still great leagues out
there that get outside sponsors,
hand out awards, but more
importantly, leagues that make
bowling night a big highlight
in the week.
Tony,
I wanted to tell you about a
league at AMF Sparetime, Rays
Rx on Wednesday nights.
Jeff and Nikki Alsabrook
(Owner/managers of Rays
Pharmacy’s) sponsor the league
as well as bowl, and bring
the old touch of handing out
trophies for year-end awards.

Keynote Speaker Magic Johnson and BPAA President Tom Martino
Year End Banquet at the VFW
They even rent out the VFW on
Harris Road in Arlington for
our year end banquet.
When I was young, the
leagues seemed to always do
this and sometime over the
years they quit doing awards
and started handing out $10 or
$20 for year-end prizes.
I read Xeno’s articles and he
talks about winning a regional,
and though he doesn’t have the
money he won for it he still has
the trophy.

Random Thoughts
Tony Franklin, Publisher
As we make the long
journey back from El Paso, and
the USBC Open tournament,
several things we pass along
the way peak my interest. None
more than the huge windmill
thingy’s east of Big Spring.
They are actually called
windmill churns. Surprisingly, Texas produces the most
windmill power of any state; I
would have guessed it would
have been California. The wind
power accounts for 9% of all
electricity generated in the
state. The Roscoe wind farm
(the one we are driving past
right now) is the largest in the
state.
West Texas A&M began
wind energy research in 1970
and today there are approximately 80,000 windmills
operating in Texas. In a lot of
cases, farmers are leasing their
land to the entities managing
the windmill farms which creates new revenue streams for
them; the farmers are getting
approximately $3000-$5000 per
year, per churn.
The science behind the
windmill churn is for the wind
to run the propeller, which
in turn pumps water which
creates energy. The energy
is stored to the power grid,
and you now have renewable
energy for the state of Texas,
and a lot of energy at that.
There’s your science information for the day, thank you
Wikipedia.

Along with the sights and
sounds of a 10-hour drive,
there was some bowling involved. Not very good bowling,
but bowling just the same.
I shot 562 in team, 519 in
Doubles (sorry Genie) and 676
in Singles. Team was ugly for
all of us, Lisa Wasson was high
on the team with 578, but it
was a really good 578. I think
we shot 2677, a truly pitiful
display. I had seven opens in
team with four missed spares.
I could have made it a respectable set but never struck in the
tenth.
As for Doubles, it was a real
disaster, I tried to hook it for

two games until Genie politely
asked me to stop. She bowled
great, 206-246-212 for 664, but
it could have been much more,
and I was no help.
I followed Genie’s instructions and started playing the
lanes much straighter, and got
out to a 234-260 start before
finding three splits the last
game and a 182 game. That
really was the story of my
trip…open frames. I had seven
in Team, eight (all splits) in
Doubles and three in Singles.
18 opens in nine games is a
ridiculous amount. Strikes
weren’t that tough to find,
but makeable leaves certainly
were.
Lisa was our best bowler
for the weekend; she only had
eight opens for the nine games,
and had 1786 for all-events.
Year 17 is in the books and
it’s on to Reno again, my favorite USBC Open destination.
I did a quick records lookup
just to see how I have fared
over the years. My first year
was 24 years ago; 1991, in
Toledo. I took off several times
over the years for various
reasons, but have now bowled
11 straight years. My best year
was in Albuquerque in 2000,
where I shot 2,136 and finished
10th in All-events. My worst
year was in 2009 in Las Vegas
with 1,673. My tournament
average for the 144 games is
210. That was a little higher
than I was thinking it would
be, but a welcome surprise.
As always, it was a fun trip,
Tori got to visit “The Wild West
West” as I called it, and she
enjoyed that.
Tony with a Navy F4U Corsair
The best part was visiting
the War Eagles Air Museum.
I have always loved WWII era
airplanes and was completely
engulfed in it when I was
younger. This particular museum, about 20 minutes outside
of El Paso, displayed WWII and
Korean War era planes. They
had everything I have always
wanted to see up close and
personal.
My favorite plane has
always been the Navy F4U
Corsair. It had a very distinctive “bent-wing” design and
was a game-changer in the
Pacific theater during the end
of WWII. Getting to see it in
person and stand next to it
was a real thrill for me. I could
have stayed there all day, but
we had to go bowl…stupid
bowling.

Finally this week a piece
of interesting research done
by long-time DFW bowler CR
Hunter. CR lives in Mansfield,
and has a deep desire to see
a family-friendly, smoke-free
bowling center built within
the city limits. In order to
hopefully expedite this desire,
he has done some extensive
market research in the hopes of
providing investors, or business-persons the background
and data needed to start-up a
venture like this.
Mansfield has been one of
the fastest growing cities in the
area over the last 15 years, and
that trend is not expected to
stop anytime soon.
CR has extensively researched the area between FM
157 and Highway 360 along
the Highway 287 corridor for
potential sites, population,
household income and other
economic market factors.
If you have any interest in
finding out more about the research, please email CR Hunter
at [email protected].
LEAGUE NIGHT

game isn’t a regional, but for
a beginner bowler winning
that trophy, it sure feels like an
accomplishment.
This is their second year of
sponsoring and we have a great
time throughout the season
and the banquet and awards
night is a great time for all.
Some even get up and do a
little karaoke.
I’m sending you this email,
first to mention to you there
are opportunities out there for
businesses to get involved with
bowling leagues and maybe get
as much out of their league as
we do.
This is a heads up that even
though bowling centers and
leagues have taken a hit these
last few years, there are some
leagues out there still making
it fun to bowl. Thanks for your
time.
Thomas Mendonca
I really want to thank
Thomas for sending this in,
and also thanks to the Alsabrook family for giving back to
bowling in a way very few do
these days.
To all of the readers, think
about this, and see if you can
find a way to make your league
this much fun.

The Xtra Frame Lubbock
Southwest Open, presented
by Storm, was the fourth PBA
Tour event covered exclusively
live on by PBA’s exclusive

Earlier in the year, Chris
Barnes of Double Oak,
Texas, won the DHC PBA Japan

first international event ever
streamed live on Xtra Frame;
Josh Blanchard of Phoenix,
Ariz., won the PBA Xtra Frame
Maine Shootout at Bayside

Colombia’s Andres Gomez won
the PBA Xtra Frame Pensacola
South Open last Sunday at New
Liberty Lanes in Pensacola,
Fla.
Among the 59 players who
qualified for the cashers’ round
was former Major League AllStar John Burkett of Southlake,
Texas. Burkett, a 50-year-old
first-year competitor on the
PBA50 Tour, bowled Saturday’s
early nine-game qualifying
squad. With half of the field yet
to bowl, Burkett was certain he
had missed the cut to Sunday’s
cashers’ round, so he headed
back to Southlake – roughly
320 miles away.
At the end of the five-hour
trip, he learned he had, in fact,
qualified in 58th place, so he
turned around and drove back
to Lubbock.
Bowling the cashers’ round
on three hours’ sleep, Burkett
moved up to 34th place after
two games before fatigue set in
and he fell to 51st.

In 2015, Belmonte won the
United States Bowling Congress
Masters for an unprecedented
third consecutive year and successfully defended his Barbasol
PBA Tournament of Champions
title to boost his career win
total to 13. He has five other
top-five finishes including runnerup finishes in the Oklahoma
Open and Maine Xtra Frame
Shootout.
Bohn won the PBA Players
Championship for his 34th career PBA Tour title. He had two
other top-10 finishes including
eighth in the Barbasol Tournament of Champions and 10th in
the Mark Roth/Marshall Hol-
man Doubles Championship.
Fagan won the 2014 PBA
World Championship for his
fifth career title and second
major. He also had three
other top 10 finishes including second in the DHC Japan
Invitational and sixth in the
Bahrain International and
Badger Opens.

PBA Unveils Schedule, Prize Fund for
GEICO World Series of Bowling VII
Focus on live ESPN PBA World Championship, new host Reno National
Bowling Stadium highlight changes
RENO, Nev. (June 18,
2015) – This December, Reno’s
National Bowling Stadium will
be the center of the bowling
universe as ESPN, Xtra Frame
and the best players in the
world will converge for a series
of the most unique and lucrative events in the sport at the
GEICO Professional Bowlers
Association World Series of
Bowling VII presented by Silver
Legacy.
WSOB VII will again give
players from around the world
five fresh opportunities for PBA
titles across five diverse PBA
lane oil patterns, highlighted
by the main event, the PBA
World Championship.
The World Series will feature an enhanced prize fund,
adjusted tournament formats,
live TV and the potential for
the largest field in WSOB
history. Celebrating its 20th an-
niversary, the National Bowling
Stadium’s 78 lanes means a full
field of 312 and a prize fund
that will exceed $760,000.
The focal point will be the
PBA World Championship, the
season’s final major championship and its ultimate test of
versatility and endurance. The
five players who qualify for the
live stepladder finals on ESPN
on Thursday, Dec. 17, will
survive 66 games of qualifying
and round-robin match play
on five different lane condition
challenges.
For the first time, bettors
will be able to wager on PBA
World Championship results at
the host hotel Silver Legacy’s
MGM Mirage Satellite Race and
Sports Book. The finals will
be the PBA’s first time in live
prime time TV since 2001.
“Thursday night, December
17, will be one of the greatest
spectacles in the history of
the game,” PBA Tour CEO and
Commissioner Tom Clark said
of the 2015 PBA World Championship finals.
The qualifying stages of
the PBA World Championship
involve nine games each on
the PBA’s Cheetah, Viper,
Chameleon and Scorpion lane
conditions. Those stages will
again also serve as separate
opportunities for players to
win PBA Tour titles and prize
money. After the nine-game
qualifying rounds in the
Cheetah, Viper, Chameleon and
Scorpion Championships, the
top 24 from each pattern will
advance to best-of-five-game
single-elimination match play
rounds (the top eight qualifiers
will receive a bye to automatically advance to the second
match play round). Match play
will reduce the field in each
event to four semifinalists. The
four ESPN-televised animal
pattern finals will include two
one-game semifinal matches
with the two winners bowling
for titles.
Entries open on July 8. The
past two World Series have
included sold-out fields, each
with representatives from 21
countries.
Subscriptions to Xtra
Frame, PBA’s exclusive online
video-streaming service, have
reached their all-time highs at
each of the past four WSOBs,
and the 2014 WSOB’s ESPN
viewership ratings were up 14
percent cumulatively for the
seven shows produced over
the previous year. Fans from
around the world also have
scheduled trips around the
WSOB.
In addition to the main
schedule, several ancillary
events and TV shows will take
place at WSOB VII. Here’s a
look at PBA World Series of
Bowling VII:

TBC JUNIOR
The TBC JUNIOR is a
scratch tournament for bowlers
14 & under with boys and girls
divisions. I decided to run
both TBC and TBC JUNIOR
simultaneously for siblings and
younger bowling friends to
bowl one of the events.
Two 4 game qualifying
squads then a 6 person single
game elimination bracket based
on 2 game total pins.
In this bracket, the top 2
seeded bowlers for boys and
girls receive a first round bye
to the second round. The championship match is determined
by 3 game total pins. This
tournament was also on the
PBA Shark pattern (44’).
There were 11 entries for the
TBC JUNIOR at Red Bird 8 boys
and 3 girl entries.
After qualifying, the leader
for the boys was RJ Grantham

First PWBA Stop Sells
Out; Field Expanded
to Satisfy Demand
ARLINGTON, Texas – The
Professional Women’s Bowling
Association Storm Sacramento
Open quickly filled its 64-player field, so the tournament will
open 16 additional spots that
will be available on a firstcome, first-served basis.
The PWBA Storm Sacramento Open will take place July
9-11 at Steve Cook’s Fireside
Lanes in Citrus Heights, California, and is the first standard
event of the 2015 PWBA Tour
season. Each standard tour
stop has a set field limit, but
Fireside Lanes and the PWBA
Tour were able to accommodate
additional spots because of the
heavy demand.
“It’s pretty awesome to
see so many women eager to
participate in the PWBA Tour
right from the start,” PWBA
spokesperson Kelly Kulick said.
“It will be a great way to kick
off what should be an exciting
two and a half months.”
The three-day PWBA Storm
Sacramento Open will start
with a practice session and
reception on Thursday, July
9, followed by a six-game
sweeper event offering a top
prize of $2,000. On Friday, July
10, the tournament will start
with two rounds of qualifying
(six games each round) after
which the field will be cut to
the top 16. There also will be a
pro-am event after qualifying
concludes.
The top 16 bowlers will
compete in round-robin match
play on Saturday, July 11,
with the top four advancing
to the stepladder finals. The
winner of the event will earn
$12,000 and, provided they
are a PWBA member, a spot in
the season-ending PWBA Tour
Championship.

2014-2015 Dexter/USBC
All-American Team Named
ARLINGTON, Texas – A
two-time state title winner
is one of three high school
juniors selected to the 20142015 Dexter/United States
Bowling Congress High School
All-American Team.
The 2014-2015 team marks
the 10th year the Dexter/USBC
High School All-American
Team has been selected. This
year’s team includes Jerod
Hromek of Towanda, Kansas,
a junior who has won the
Kansas High School Activities
Individual State bowling title
the last two years.
“We’re excited once again to
recognize 10 high school bowlers who have excelled on the
lanes and in the classroom,”
Bud Clapsaddle, Vice President
of Dexter Bowling, said. “We’re
also proud to mark a decade of

Just Paying
Attention
By Mark London
[email protected]
Just make the next cut,
Hoss, make the next cut. That
line I’ve heard several people
attribute to longtime PBA star
Patrick Allen when describing
how to stay alive in higher profile pro and megabuck tournaments. When you have to place
high enough in a group, but
not necessarily win, is what
bowling has done in the latest
step last week of qualifying to
be an official sport for the 2020
Olympic Summer Games in
Tokyo.
In the list of twenty-six
sports, eight moved on to the
last round of examination. The
eight international federations
will make final presentations
to the Tokyo 2020 Organizing
Committee on August 7-8. The
Tokyo Committee will make
its recommendations to the
International Olympic Committee and final selections will be
announced at the IOC Session
in Rio next August. There will
be one or maybe two sports
selected.
Others under consideration
are Baseball/Softball, Karate,
Roller Sports, Sport Climbing,
Squash, Surfing, and Wushu.
Part of the Tokyo Committee’s decision will be based
on how well a sport promotes
the Olympic movement and

according to the June 22 press
release, “...with a focus on
youth appeal. The additional
events will all value by engaging the Japanese population
and new audiences worldwide,
reflecting the Tokyo 2020
Games vision.”
Two things jump out at
me right away. With a youthdriven energy flow from
all the various scholarship
tournaments, collegiate play,
and international competitions, there’s one big plus,
especially for sponsors geared
to that demographic. Plus,
Japan loves bowling and has
for years. Talk to anyone who
has been there and seen it for
themselves.
Kevin Dornberger’s hard
work for World Bowling these
numerous last few years is
THIS CLOSE to paying off.
Maybe, I’ll finally get the
chance to write on the theme,
‘Bowling is in the Olympics,
Now What?’
In a Wall Street Journal
blog, Japan Real Time, the
author is asking which sport
would readers prefer to see
in Tokyo. At press time after
67,000 votes, bowling was
leading with 37%, followed by
karate at 34% and sport climbing with 25%. And tell your
Kansas City Royals fan friends
to vote a couple of times, too.
################
One of his first statements
in our interview was this. “It
was just a unique experience.”
Yes, it is quite the understatement. But if you know the
man, it makes perfect sense.
It was supposed to happen
sooner. But when it is your
turn to get a lifetime goal, especially if you perceive it’s the
last try at your turn, the ride to
that achievement, even when
you are almost twenty years
older than the other finalists, is
that much more unique.
Twenty years ago this
month, John Handegard
became the oldest winner on
the PBA National tour at the
age of 57, establishing a mark
that stands to this day. In the
first of a two-part JPA exclusive
here in TBN, the road the
Oregon native traveled that
week was just as remarkable
as the road he took to win
fourteen PBA50 titles, becoming the second senior player
to be named to the PBA Hall
of Fame in 2009. Buzz Fazio
held the previous record of 56
years, 307 days, winning the
Northern California Open in
December 1964. Handegard
was seven weeks past his 57th
birthday.
He was in the last of his
three seasons of being PBA50
Player of the Year, but it was
the fire that got lit when he
made match play in his first
PBA Tournament twentyseven years earlier in the 1968
Seattle Open which started this
journey.
Or was it being in the
right place at the right time?
The 2010 USBC Hall of Famer
explains.
“I would bowl the national
tour if there wasn’t any senior
events happening, so I was
in the vicinity and bowled.
We just had the ABC Senior
Masters in Reno where I made
the show and lost, then went
to Twin Falls, Idaho to bowl.
We heard from Kennewick
they needed pros to bowl the
pro-am. They did a great job
and got 1,500 people to bowl,
scheduling them up to three
days ahead of the tournament.
Then I signed up to bowl the
tournament.”
Signs of a good week were
plentiful, the first was shooting
300 in the very first game of
the tournament.
“Ended up shooting 300
over in the second six-game
block. Had a pretty good look
the whole week and made
match play. Scores were pretty
high all the way through the
week,” Handegard added.
In the match before the
position round game, he threw
the last four strikes to tie and
get fifteen of the thirty bonus
pins for a match play win. In
that position round match, he
is a spare and a strike away
from the ESPN cameras. While
next to Walter Ray Williams,
Jr. and Dave Arnold, both
whom could have leapfrogged
him in the standings, he fills
the twenty pins and qualifies
fifth by a single pin. It was his
first singles show on the PBA
tour since September 1980.
However, Handegard said this
one was a little different.
“At that point, it was almost
like I had won the tournament, that’s how I felt, I was
so pumped up, I was glad the
TV show wasn’t until the next
day or I would have had a huge
letdown. When I woke up the
next morning I felt absolutely
rested and ready to go.”
Although his RV was parked
outside the center, he said waiting around for the show was a
little awkward trying to figure
out when to eat so not to run
out of energy. Once he walked
in Celebrity Bowl and started
practicing, he relaxed and it
was business as usual.
“The Ebonite rep, Brian Pursel, had the guys on the PBA
truck drill a Black Omega for
the TV show and later asked
how it was doing during the
practice before the show. I said
the ball rolled great, except
I’m not getting the 10-pin out
very easy. He said it’s pretty
shiny, just give it to me, and he
scuffed it lightly with a pad to
knock the gloss off. After that
it worked great.”
(For us curious pro shop
geeks, Pursel recently confirmed the ball’s layout, placing
the letters ‘A’ and ‘B’ up to add
length. For those who drilled
any of the Omega series, you’ll
remember the letter dial.
Thanks, Brian!)
In order, the opponents were
Mike Aulby, Norm Duke, Bryan
Goebel, and Mark Williams.
Each of the four bowlers either
had won or would win the
ToC. Even better, these five
either would be or were already
PBA Hall of Famers (Goebel
is PBA HoF eligible with 10
titles).
During the one-hour preshow practice, Handegard had
a moment of reflection.
“I thought, you know what,
this is quite a field here. The
guy who one the last two
tournaments (Aulby won the
Brunswick World Tournament
of Champions, ABC Masters,
and subsequent ‘95 PBA Player
of the Year), the runner up in
the last tournament (Williams
in the ABC Masters), the current Player of the Year (Duke),
and the runner up for Player of
the Year, (Goebel) are all here.
These guys are all really good.
My chances are really slim,
but if I could just stay close,
if I could not to be shut out,
then I’ll have a chance to do
something.”
################
In Part Two next week, the
good signs-a-plenty continue
as Handegard gives us his
thoughts on ninety minutes on
national television he won’t be
forgetting anytime soon.

The scores at the 2015

There was one change in the
top 10 this week, with Kevin
Walter of Fishers, Indiana, and
Nakoma Arvin of Hamilton,
Ohio, moving into 10th place in
Regular Doubles with a 1,355
total June 26.
Walter set the pace at the El

2015 USBC Open Championships scheduled to end early
The final squads of the 2015
USBC Open Championships
have been consolidated, and
the last bowlers of the year will
take the lanes at the El Paso
Convention Center for doubles
and singles July 11 at 10 a.m.
Eastern.
The 2015 event kicked
off March 7, and the final
squad will mark the 127th
consecutive day of competition.
By tournament end, nearly
40,000 bowlers will have made
their way to The Sun City for
the 112th edition of the world
largest participatory sporting
event. This is the first time in
tournament history El Paso has
played host.
A look ahead
There will be one live

Center this week.
John Szczerbinski of
North Tonawanda, New York,
the 2013 Regular All-Events
champion, will make his return
to the championship lanes
after a one-year hiatus due to
his status on the Professional

The 27-year-old right-hander
claimed the 2013 title with a
2,228 total, which included sets
of 789 in singles, 777 in team

in El Paso, Texas.
Andrew Jordan of Dublin,
Ohio, and Brandon Novak of
Chillicothe, Ohio, finished
sixth in Regular Doubles at the

made a return trip to the top
10 at the latest edition of the
tournament at the El Paso
Convention Center.
Novak led this year’s effort

224 for a 689 series, while
Jordan added 243, 187 and 239
for a 669 total and 1,358 final

competition, qualifying and

Dublin Bowl’s Bill Cooley Receives
Jaryszak Laneman Award
LAS VEGAS – Bill Cooley,
the head mechanic and lane
maintenance supervisor at Earl
Anthony’s Dublin Bowl for the
last 35 years, was presented
the 2015 Jim Jaryszak Laneman Award at Bowl Expo on
Thursday.
Because of his extensive
knowledge of lane maintenance
and Brunswick pinsetters,
Cooley was hired by bowling
legend Earl Anthony in 1980.
The center has been the host of
numerous Professional Bowlers Association national and
regional events over the last 30
years.
“When I heard that I
won the award, it blew me
away. I am overwhelmed
and humbled,” Cooley said.
“Lanemen like working in the
background. If you’re seeing
the laneman, it is usually a bad
thing, which is why this award
and recognition is so special
for the bowling industry.
“I want to thank all the
people who won before. These
were pioneers in the industry
and their support has been un-
believable. I want to thank Jim
Jaryszak for having a vision of
how important lanemen are. If
he was here today, I know he
would be proud of what this
has become.”
Cooley worked with the PBA
lane maintenance crew led by
Len Nicholson, the first recipient of the Jim Jaryszak Laneman Award, on lane conditions
for the PBA tournaments and
TV finals at Dublin Bowl.
Cooley currently handles

made the most of a last-minute

presented by USBC and excelled together, taking the lead
in Open Doubles with a 1,419
total June 21.
Wilbur, a 33-year-old
right-hander, led the way with
games of 227, 247 and 259 for a
733 series, and Lathrop added
a 686 set. Todd Whitesides of
Lake Wylie, South Carolina,
and Chris Arcaro of Charlotte,
North Carolina, previously held
the lead with 1,414.
The performance also
helped both bowlers into the
top 10 in their respective
singles divisions. Wilbur
landed in eighth place in Open
Singles, and by competing in
doubles and singles at the same
time, he became eligible for the
Dual Entry prize list, where
he is fifth overall. Lathrop,
a 51-year-old right-hander, is
seventh in Senior Singles.

sports, climbing, surfing and
wushu are the eight sports
nominated for the next stage
of the application process to be
added to the Olympic program
for Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games,
it was announced Monday by
Tokyo’s 2020 Additional Events
Programme Panel and confirmed by World Bowling.
The decision was made

biz writer Nick Butler. The
short list includes survivors
from a list of 26 sports that had
submitted applications to the
Tokyo panel.
All eight sports federations will now progress to a
second stage of the application
process, which will include the
submission of further details
by July 22. Briefings to Tokyo
organizers will take place Aug.
7-8. An unspecified number
will then be proposed to the
International Olympic Committee in September, before a
final decision is due to made
by the IOC in Rio de Janeiro in
August 2016.
A key part of bowling’s
presentation will be the new
Round1 World Open which will
take place in Tokyo July 9-12,
featuring men and women
from 70 different countries and
televised finals which will be
held in a specially-constructed
arena setting in Tokyo. Several
PBA players from the U.S. and

Ted Hoffman Jr., a PBA Hall of

The Jim Jaryszak Laneman

to recognize a person for his
behind-the-scenes career as a
laneman. It is named in honor
of the former USBC Research
Manager, who died in 2010.
Jaryszak was instrumental
in setting up the USBC Sport
Bowling program and was the
point person as USBC worked
with the PBA on updating its
“animal” patterns.
Cooley is the fifth recipient
of the Jim Jaryszak Laneman Award. In addition to
Nicholson, the former Director
of Lane Maintenance for the
PBA, previous recipients are:
Sam Baca, the first Director of
Lane Maintenance for the PBA,
in 2012; John Davis, Kegel
founder, who was posthumously honored in 2013; and Steve
Cross of Kegel in 2014.

Stuff you can’t do without
Like all sports, bowling
has a variety of paraphernalia
designed to aid performance.
Some really help and others are
more for attitude than actual
physical benefit. Don’t treat
those types lightly. They can
be very valuable assets since
you’ll perform better physically
when you’re comfortable mentally. The list is by no means
every possible accessory you
could have but it’s a good start
to making sure you have what
you need. More next month….
Ditty Bag
It’s helpful if you know
where your tape is when you
need it. Holding up play while
searching for a pair of scissors
or a piece of tape can put pressure on you, not to mention it’s
pretty inefficient. You might
stop looking or think you’ll
just suffer through the rest of
this game without that piece
of tape and fix it later. That
compromises not only your
physical game, but your mental
game as well.
I keep my stuff in a foliolike thingy with elastic and a
little pouch on the inside. It
used to be a “portable secretary” with a stapler and other
office supplies in it. It works
great as a bowling accessories
kit and fits perfectly in a ball
bag.
Here are the things I believe
you should keep quickly
accessible:
Adhesive bandages
Extra tape in every size you
might need
Fingernail clippers
Fingernail file
Glue

Hand conditioner
The hand conditioners used
in bowling are usually some
type of soft bag in a rectangular or round shape that fits easily in the hand. The contents
of the bag absorb moisture
without putting anything on
the hand to change the feel
in the ball. That’s the critical
component of hand conditioners. They should not change
the feel of the hand in the ball.
Once you start bowling,
your bowling hand shouldn’t
touch anything but the ball.
You certainly should not eat
or drink with that hand. Don’t
wash your hands in between
shots. Don’t high five with your
bowling hand, ever. You don’t
know where whatever your
high fiving has been, after all.
Those things will destroy the
feel you’ve developed. A hand
conditioner can destroy that
feel as well. Be careful about
the buildup of residue from
the bag on your hands. Some
people use the bags not for
moisture removal, but rather
because they’re an important
part of their pre-shot routine.
If you’re going to use one, use
it for every shot so you have a
consistent feel.
Rosin
Rosin is another product
used on the bowling hand. It’s
a tacky powdered substance
in a small porous bag that
provides a more secure grip. If
you use any powders on your
hand, you have some serious
responsibility to go along with
their use.
Not all bowlers use powders.
Those who don’t use them also
don’t want the effects of them
on their hands. If you’re not
careful when using the bag, it
can affect other players. The
use of powders is a personal
issue and if you use them, you
should keep them near wherever you’re sitting and/or place
them on a towel; whatever
it takes to keep them out of
anyone else’s way.
If you do put the bag on a
towel, it must be a different
towel than the one you’re using
to wipe the ball. Even inadvertently putting ANY foreign
substance on the exterior of
the ball is against USBC Rules.
Some people put their bags on
the console or monitor. This is
inappropriate as they can be in
other people’s way and/or get
knocked onto the floor, a very
dangerous thing. If you’re a
devout user, be sure you carry
an extra.

Bill O’Neill Caps Oklahoma’s Grand
Casino Hotel & Resort PBA Summer
Swing With King of the Swing Victory
SHAWNEE, Okla. (June
23, 2015) – In what could be
considered the all-star event
of the 2015 Oklahoma’s Grand
Casino Hotel & Resort PBA
Summer Swing, Bill O’Neill of
Langhorne, Pa., beat Tommy
Jones of Simpsonville, S.C.,
191-164, to successfully defend
his Oklahoma’s Grand Casino
Resort King of the Swing title
at the Grand Event Center.
The concluding event of
the Summer Swing, which
aired Tuesday on the CBS
Sports Network, provided a
unique challenge, requiring
the finalists to compete on
a dramatically different lane
condition on each lane. The
special two-lane arena installation in the Grand Event Center
featured the 32-foot Wolf lane
condition on the left lane and
the 52-foot Badger lane condition on the right lane, putting
a premium on adjustments,
shot-making and equipment
selections for the players.
“I enjoy dueling lane conditions,” said O’Neill, who won
the Oklahoma Open to earn his
spot in the special event, a nonPBA title finale to the Summer
Swing. “You have to use all the
tricks in the bag. In this case
it turned out to be a grind out,
but I enjoyed the test.”
In winning last year’s King
of the Swing, O’Neill defeated
Sean Rash, 254-181, for the
title.
“The trophies will make
good bookends,” said O’Neill,
who also finished third in the
Bear and Wolf Opens earlier in
the Summer Swing. “I might
have let a couple opportunities
get away from me this year
but in the end I can go to
sleep happy after winning the
Oklahoma Open and the King
of the Swing.”
Leading up to the title
match, two-time defending
PBA Player of the Year Jason
Belmonte of Australia defeated
Wolf Open winner Kyle Troup
of Taylorsville, N.C., 201-182,
in a battle between a pair of
two-handers to start the finals.
Belmonte, who earned the
wild card spot in the King of
the Swing as the top pointgetter in the Summer Swing
without a title, then lost to
Badger Open winner Ronnie
Russell of Marion, Ind., in the
second match, 233-211. Jones,
the Bear Open winner, then
defeated Russell, 208-178, to
meet O’Neill in the title match.
Xtra Frame, the PBA’s online video subscription service,
features a preview and postgame show for all CBS Sports
Network telecasts of Summer
Swing events. PBA fans can

Summer Swing action through
