From the Editor
March has been another busy
month with the Sunday lunch
buffet (Det store kolde Bord) –
a very special and huge thank
you to Bente Nielsen for
visiting from Gosford and
helping us with the
preparations. At the council
election Saturday 19 March, the
club was a polling booth (your
editor worked there and the
booth processed over 1,000
voters). Yesterday’s concert
with CD launches for Rebecca
Wright & Donald McKay and
Cloudstreet drew a huge crowd.
It was an amazing concert with
a wonderful vibe and long
queues for coffee and pastry,
we sold out! Already looking

Replacement of our suspended ceiling
Volunteers needed for removal of old ceiling.
As part of our program to keep the club looking fresh and clean, we have
decided to replace the suspended ceiling as it is looking mighty tired after
15 years of service.
At the same time we will replace our oldest air conditioner so this is a
major project cost wise.
We can save a fair bit if we remove the old ceiling ourselves and so far
the committee has signed up as volunteers but we could do with some
more hands in order to ensure that we get the work done as quickly as
possible.
This will be happening Monday 2 May (Labour Day) and if you could
please contact me to sign up, that would be great.
Even if you can only contribute a couple of hours in the morning, that
would be a great help.
If anybody has a special deal for a skip bin for the old ceiling, please let
me know.

SKOVLYST Craft Beer- first in Australia!
Once upon a time, at a sunny afternoon with friends at the Skovlyst kro
in Hareskoven just north of Copenhagen, I tasted Skovlyst beer for the
first time. Aaah! Outstanding. Subsequent communication with Casper
Møller, the brew master, resulted in the first consignment of a selection
of wonderful brews – selected by Casper himself – arriving in Brisbane
and available to the Danish Club members.
Inspired by the beautiful natural aromas from walking in the forest
Hareskoven, Casper decided in 2004 to develop a beer where these
aromas could be enjoyed in liquid form and his first brew was Birkebryg
(birchbrew).
The selection includes the following 5 beers in half litre bottles and as this
is a new product, we have mixed cases of 15 beers with 3 beers of each
type listed below or of course a full case of either of the beers at $75 a
case, or a gift pack with 4 beers at $20.
Birkebryg/ birch brew
India Pale Ale
Bøgebryg/beech brew
Nældebryg/stinging nettles
Julebryg/Christmas brew
Golden pilsner
Golden ale
Brown ale
Stout
Dark beer – think CHRISTMAS!
We only have a small quantity and will fill orders as received but given
the success when we launched the product at our recent Det Store Kolde
Bord, rest assured we will aim to get more of this beer in next order from
Denmark.
If you read Danish, visit the Skovlyst website – www.skovlyst.com – and
read more about the beer and have a look at the full selection.
Anker Jørgensen, former Danish prime minister, dies at 93
Politicians across the country are sharing their memories of Anker Jørgensen (photo: Hans Jørn
Storgaard Andersen)
March 20th, 2016 7:21 pm| by Ray W
Anker Jørgensen, Denmark’s prime minister from 1972-1973 and again from 1975-1982 has died.
He was 93.
Danish politicians from all parties are remembering Jørgensen, who served as chairman of
Socialdemokratiet from 1973 to 1987, as a fierce but honourable political warrior.
Former PM Helle Thorning-Schmidt (S) wrote on her Facebook page that Jørgensen was “a man of
honour who always fought for justice and equality. He never forgot those who have the least and
fewest opportunities.”
Radikale head Morten Østergaard tweeted that “Anker Jørgensen was a person first and then a
politician. His inspiration will live on.”
Remembered his roots
Jørgensen was born into poverty in an allotment house on Amager. He was orphaned at 5-yearsold when both his parents died of tuberculosis.
He started his political career working for worker’s rights via several unions and was first elected to
parliament in 1964. He served in parliament until 1994.
On October 3, 1974, then PM Jens Otto Krag resigned the post and appointed Jørgensen as his
successor.
Throughout his time in parliament and at the top of the government, Jørgensen and his family
eschewed Marienborg and other political residences to stay in their modest flat in Sydhavnen.
“Anker was, both privately and professionally, a good person,” wrote Socialdemokratiet in a
statement. “He was, in the best sense of the concept, a man of the people.”

CHRISTIANSBORG TOWER AND CAFÉ
WELCOME TO TÅRNET
From the tower you can see Copenhagen from a completely new angle. You can see streets,
building and details that you have probably never noticed. You can see roofs and towers and all
the way to Sweden on a clear day.
The view from the tower of Christiansborg Palace is unique and magnificent – Copenhagen’s
highest tower, which is now open to the public, for the very first time. The tower is the property of
the Danish Parliament, whose Members took the initiative to open it – for the pleasure of all those
who live in or are visiting Copenhagen.
In addition to enjoying the view, you can also give yourself a culinary experience in Restaurant
Tårnet, which is run by the recognised restaurateur Rasmus Bo Bojesen. Please note that the
restaurant is very popular so it is a good idea to book a table in advance.
THE HISTORY
The tower was constructed as part of the third, and present-day, Christiansborg Palace, which was
built during the period 1907-1928. Like the rest of the palace, it was designed by architect
Thorvald Jørgensen but the plans for the tower were changed several times due, among other
things, to a budget overrun. This meant that some of the decorative elements had to be cut back
so there was only one crown on top of the tower when the palace was completed in 1928.
It was only in 1934 that two more crowns were added. The initiative for this was taken by the
then Minister for the Interior, Bertel Dahlgaard, who felt that, with only one crown, the tower
looked too much like the one on top of the railway station at Korsør. With the addition of the two
crowns, mounted on what is known as a gable spire, the tower became higher than the tower on
top of Copenhagen City Hall. At a height of 106 metres, the tower on Christiansborg Palace is still
the highest tower in Copenhagen – 40 centimetres higher than the city hall tower.
The three crowns are also a symbol of the Kalmar Union, the historical alliance between Denmark,
Norway and Sweden that lasted from 1397 to 1523. In addition to the crowns, the gable spire on
the tower is decorated with a cross, indicating that Denmark is a Christian country, and a weather
vane. The spire also contains eight figures created by sculptor Axel Locher. They are 3.1 metres
tall, made of copper and include a fisherman and a farmer as representatives of the country’s
most important occupations.
Renovation of the roof
The tower is made of reinforced concrete with a granite-clad facade and a tiled roof. After a
national collection in 1937, the tiles were replaced with copper cladding. An inspection of the
cladding and the underlying reinforced concrete at the beginning of the new millennium revealed
that they were in such poor condition that a radical renovation was necessary. The renovation
took place between 2006-2009.
After the renovation, the roof is copper-brown in colour, but the wind and the weather over the
next 20 years will cause it to become coated with verdigris and return it to its characteristic green
colour. The new copper cladding is expected to remain intact for about 100 years.
THE VIEW
‘The view’ is the viewing platform and the highest level you can visit at the tower. It provides you
with a magnificent, panoramic view of Copenhagen. The viewing platform is situated at a height of
44 metres and has a maximum capacity of 50 people at a time.
Visiting the viewing platform is free of charge but it may be necessary to wait to come up (and
down) in the lift. Read more about access, opening hours and other practical information
at taarnet.dk/info.
You can just visit the viewing platform or combine a visit with a meal in the restaurant. Please
note that the restaurant is very popular so it is a good idea to book a table in advance. Read more
about the restaurant at taarnet.dk/restaurant.
Last month I thanked the wrong Lars for the insignia. Many thanks to Lars Glerup
for obtaining the royal insignia for the Royal Life Guard uniform (which was donated
by Visti Skaanvad) and for polishing and rearranging the sabre (which was donated
by Henrik Hegner).

SCANPAN - Our History
Since SCANPAN’s inception in 1956, our hand cast
aluminium products with patented ceramic titanium
coating have formed the core of our business.
Therefore, we cast all of our non-stick aluminium
products at our own factory in Denmark.
Environmentally-friendly
kitchenware
At SCANPAN we strive to make a difference – in the kitchen and for the
environment. This means that all of our die-cast aluminium products are
made from environmentally-friendly aluminium at our own factory in
Denmark.
Environmentally-friendly liquid aluminium is poured by hand into a
mould and die-cast under 250 tonnes of pressure. In the following
processes, 30,000-degree-hot titanium is bonded to the compressed
aluminium and a non-stick coating is applied and tempered. This unique
casting technique ensures the products maximum durability and perfect
heat distribution across the entire surface. Quality is controlled in every
detail throughout the production process. As part of our ongoing product
and technology development, we have also developed Green Tek, a
coating that is 100% free of PFOA and PFOS chemicals. Combined with
our patented ceramic titanium technology, Green Tek is one of the
market’s most durable non-stick coatings.
Extensive range featuring the
highest quality
To ensure quality, user-friendliness and aesthetics, we continuously
develop our concepts with our partners and professional chefs.
SCANPAN makes uncompromising kitchenware for modern kitchens. In
addition to the popular non-stick products, SCANPAN’s range also
includes refined design series and professional series in stainless steel
and copper, special products for daily cooking and colourful kitchen
knives and accessories.
The company
SCANPAN A/S exports to 45 countries. The export business is
constantly growing and now represents more than 75% of our total
turnover. SCANPAN is 100% Danish-owned, with the company’s
headquarters and factory located near Aarhus, Denmark. SCANPAN
A/S also has offices in Finland and subsidiaries in Norway, Singapore,
China and the United States.
Did you know?
Recycling aluminium saves a lot of waste.
One kg of aluminium extracted from the Earth creates 85.4kg of waste.
One kg of recycled aluminium creates just 3.5 kg waste.
Committee The committee now has
ten members. At our recent meeting in
March we welcomed Charlotte Due
Adams to the committee.
Courtyard The new outdoor furniture
(timber tables and benches) has arrived
from Denmark and will be installed
once the courtyard is secure. The new
fence panels are in the design phase
and will not be put in before various
works has been completed in the street
to avoid damage.
Ceiling We have decided to replace the
old ceiling and air conditioner. It will
happen in May.
Stage There are also plans for a new
stage in progress, we’re tired of
stacking and unstacking the seven
stage boxes.
Membership We’ve dropped back to
280 and are still chasing around 30
members for membership fees for the
current year.
Events Next Café Danmark will be on
22 April.
Beer, snaps and licorice The new
consignment with SKOVLYST beer
arrived just in time for the Sunday
lunch. Great introduction.
Money The first eight months show a
surplus of approx. $41,000. We’ll
spend most of the surplus on the ceiling
and air conditioner. It will be worth it!
