Volunteering with Parks and Recreation can be a fun and rewarding
experience for all ages. Each year, volunteers provide thousands of
hours of service to parks, programs and community centers, and are
essential to our success. Volunteers work in a variety of roles including
providing tutoring, athletic coaching and mentoring to youth at
community centers; planting flowers and helping with landscaping
on park grounds; or assisting with special events such as the Ethnic
Enrichment Festival, the Wilderness Run or Kansas City’s Big Picnic.
Kansas City, Missouri Parks and Recreation frequently videotapes
and photographs participants enjoying our programs, special
events, parks and facilities. These images are used by KC Parks and
the City of Kansas City, Missouri in publications, on the web, for
television/cable promotions, or to use as is seen fit. The images are
used at the City’s discretion and become its sole property.
KC Parks has formal partnerships established with neighborhood,
community, business and not-for-profit organizations for programs,
events and projects. These partnerships allow our department to
leverage resources and generate citywide interest and support for our
system facilities, programs and events. We appreciate you!

The BayRider surf simulator
Private instruction
$25 per 30 minute lesson, $65 for 3 lessons. Minimum height
requirement of 48” and a signed participant waiver must be on
file prior to participation. Pre-registration is required, sorry no

Semi-private instruction
Minimum of 2 participants, maximum of 5 participants, $50 per 30
minute lesson, $130 for 3 lessons. Minimum height requirement
of 48” and a signed participant waiver must be on file prior to

Rent the BayRider
For your Private Party
Available for private rental when The Bay is not open to the public.
A 1 hour minimum is required and the following fees apply:

Want to learn how to ride? Add a coach for $45 per hour
Participants must be 48” tall to ride and must have a signed participant wavier on file.
Pre-registration is required with a minimum of 7 days advance notice and payment in

An ideal time for parents with children under the age of 10, avoid the
crowds and lines while the activity pool and sprayground are open just
for you. Other areas of the facility are closed during this special program.
At The Springs, Mondays are FREE for season pass holder and 1 child.
This very popular program is limited to the first 100 participants each
day. Drop-in format, discounted rate for season pass holders.

River Walking
Do you swim upstream? This is your opportunity to walk against the
current in our lazy river. This is a great way to test your balance and
strength in a low-impact way. Work at your own pace, no instructor to
lead you but lifeguards to watch you progress over the course of the
season. Drop-in format, discounted rate for season pass holders.

Spend some time learning the tricks of the trade and perfecting

Water Safety Awareness Clinic
Summer is almost here. Is your child safe in the swimming pool,
lake or stream? Join us for a brief introduction of water safety. The
use of lifejackets, rescue equipment and basic water safety will
be provided by Midwest Pool Management staff. Children under
the age of 10 must be accompanied by a swimming parent. Preregistration required, limited to first 100 participants.

Totally Teen Party
The park is all yours at this special party for 13-18 year olds. A DJ
will be spinning your favorite tunes, games and prizes. Teams and

rate. Parents are encouraged to attend at no charge. Season passes
are not allowed for this special event.

Private Swimming Lessons
Private lessons offer the greatest flexibility. Your one-on-one private
lesson includes four 30-minute classes with a trained instructor.
Lessons are customized to meet the needs of everyone, including
infants, children, adults and seniors. Pre-registration is required.

Learn-to-Swim classes
Bring your children ages 6 months and up for group swim lessons.
We have levels available for beginners to pre-swim team. Classes

Swim LifeGuard
Do you know how to swim? How about swimming to the bottom of
the pool for a dive ring or diving off the diving board? This class is
designed for those age 10 and older and offers beginner through
intermediate swimming skills taught in a small class environment. This class is ideal for the middle or high school student interested in
learning basic and safe swimming skills. Class length is 45 minutes.
Pre-registration is required.

Junior LifeGUARD
Youth ages 10 to 15 are exposed to lifeguarding techniques, first
aid, and CPR training. Leadership and responsibility are emphasized
while learning the skills to become lifeguard certified. Ability to
swim 50 meters and submerge underwater are required. 4 hours
of job shadowing of current lifeguards when available. Successful
completion of the Junior LifeGUARD program results in a FREE
certification class prior to the 2017 summer. Prizes for completing,
competing and attending the entire program. Class length is 45
minutes. Pre-registration is required.

Discovery LifeGUARD
Experience team work and cooperation while learning basic first aid, rescue

Rent any of the swimming pools on a Saturday or Sunday
morning or evening for your special event, family reunion,

Certified LifeGUARD
Gain all skills and certifications needed to be a StarGUARD lifeguard!
Participants will learn lifeguard training techniques, leadership,
responsibility, first aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Lifeguard.
Upon successful completion of the class, participants will obtain
all necessary certifications to become a lifeguard. Upon successful
completion, candidates will earn a lifeguard certification. Total class
length is 28 hours and candidates must attend all 8 sessions to be
eligible for certification.

Looking for a cool place to have your child’s birthday party or
family event? Shaded picnic tables are available for reservation
at several spraygrounds. Limited capacity, space fills quickly.
The following spraygrounds have picnic tables available from
11 a.m.-7 p.m. each day for $25 per picnic table (two-hour time

The most historic of the five facilities is Swope Memorial built in 1919

FootGolf
FootGolf is a combination of the popular sports of soccer and
golf. The game is played with a regulation No. 5 soccer ball at a

rules largely correspond to golf rules. The first FootGolf course in
Missouri is located at the current par three (The Rock) golf course
at the Heart of America Course in Swope Park. Come out and give

woods, this course will take its toll on both your body and your score.

The center serves as a showcase for the talents of visual and

Kansas City Parks and Recreation is now operating the Historic
Garment District Museum’s Broadway location and has acquired the
collection of Kansas City-made garments and accessories.
The Kansas City Museum
which served as the home for the horse trainer and now functions
as the Museum’s administrative offices; and the Gardener’s Tool
Shop and Planting Shed. The original Greenhouse is no longer on
the property.
The Museum is located on Gladstone Boulevard in Kansas City’s
Historic Northeast area, just 10 minutes north and east of downtown
Kansas City, Missouri. The three-acre Museum site sits atop a bluff
overlooking the Missouri River Valley, adjacent to historic Kessler
Park and Cliff Drive, a state scenic by-way.
The Museum is undergoing planning for an extensive historic
restoration and rehabilitation of the entire property. During this
time, the Museum is open for tours, exhibitions, programs, and
events. Visitors enjoy seeing remaining, original interior architecture
alongside spaces in process for historic restoration and rehabilitation.
In its current state, the Museum reveals visible and enduring traces
of the past, as well as the promise of what is to come.

The Kansas City Museum is located in the Scarritt Renaissance
neighborhood of the Historic Northeast. The Museum is housed in
the former Beaux-Arts style estate of lumber magnate, civic leader,
and philanthropist Robert Alexander Long (R.A. Long) and his
family—including his wife Ella Long and their two daughters Sallie
America Long Ellis and Loula Long Combs. The property, completed
in 1910, features five of the six original structures designed by
architect Henry Hoit. These structures include Corinthian Hall, the
50-room four-story mansion; the Carriage House, in which R.A.
Long’s famed equestrienne daughter, Loula Long Combs, housed

Offered during the months of April - October (when trees have
leaves). Participants will make a map of U.S. forests, be able to

tell how the trees are useful to wildlife, and describe the harm and
benefits of wildfires and how a tree’s growth rings tell of its life.
Webelo Boy Scout Naturalist Badge
Make a map of bird flyways used at migration time, learn to identify
poisonous plants and venomous reptiles, learn about a resident wild
animal and describe the habitats and behaviors of six different wild
animals seen at the center or outdoors.

Learn about geologic products used in building homes. Determine
minerals used to make items from our daily lives, make a drawing

Girls on the Run (AGES 8-11)
Girls on the Run is a program that focuses on character development,
confidence, positive self-image, and physical activity through
interactive lessons, games, and running. Participants will celebrate
completion of the program with a 5K run. Kansas City Parks and
Recreation is thrilled to be hosting such an important program.

Healthy Cooking (AGES 7-16)
This program will help kids in the community learn how to prepare
fun and healthy meals, including appetizers, snacks, entrees, and
desserts. We’ll also focus on kitchen safety and sanitation.

Homeschool PE (AGES 5-13)
Homeschool PE provides a hands-on environment in which your child
can learn the basics of different sports, including basketball, football,

This class is for young adults who want to incorporate fitness into
their daily lives. Students will learn the fundamentals of weight
training and exercise safety. Our goal is to make sure youth make
fitness a way of life!

Bootcamp (AGES 18+)
Exercise in a group setting that will build strength, endurance and
flexibility. Perfect class for beginners and those who want to tone
and maintain fitness.

Beats and Biceps (AGES 18+)
Ready to build muscle? Beats and Biceps is for you! In this group
exercise class, participants will work every major muscle group as

Our adult dance classes are a fun way to get in shape while learning

This co-ed program encourages you to use modern-day Hip Hop
dance moves to get moving and burn calories. Feeling creative?
Participants are encouraged to incorporate their own moves and style.
Want an easy way to stay active? Join one of our walking clubs! Enjoy
a brisk walk while socializing with friends.

Martial Arts (AGES 18+)
Strengthen your body, improve flexibility, and soothe your mind
with our yoga classes. These classes are great for beginners and the
more advanced.

We offer a number of adult martial arts programs to help discipline
body and mind. Classes include warm up, skill practice and fun.
Instruction includes both group lessons and individual attention.

Wanting a challenging routine? This high-powered workout will
definitely kick your body into gear. We mix traditional calisthenics
and body weight exercises with interval training and strength training.

Spin Class (AGES 18+)
This indoor cycling class is a fun way to improve cardiovascular
health. Participants will get a great endurance workout, including
sprinting and hill climbs.

Tabata (AGES 18+)
If you’re looking for an optimal aerobic workout, then this is the
class for you! This class uses high-intensity interval training that will
increase aerobic capacity, endurance, and strength.

Total Core Tennis (AGES 18+)
This is an instructional beginner’s class which focuses on developing
hand-eye coordination and racquet skills. The emphasis is on leisure
play, but students will be encouraged toward competitive play.
Choose between indoor and outdoor instruction.

Zumba (AGES 18+)
Zumba is a group exercise class that uses Latin based dance moves
for a great workout. Participants will get their hearts pumping and
their muscles toned while experiencing the fun of a group workout
session.

Aged for Action (AGES 60+)
This class is designed as a low impact cardio workout routine for
the older adult. It consists of warm-ups, stretches, cardio routines,
strengthening exercises, and a cool down. Location: Southeast
Senior Chair Exercise (AGES 60+)
Keep your heart happy and healthy with light aerobics from the
comfort and security of a chair. This class will improve flexibility,
balance, and strength.

Senior Stretch (AGES 60+)
Senior Stretch is a low-impact video exercise program. Participants
at any level will find something to do as they practice stationary
cardiovascular exercises.

Silver Sneakers (AGES 60+)
Silver Sneakers is a light workout that includes cardio walking,
running in place, army exercise, chair crunches, leg lifts, and squats.
Classes are free for Silver Sneakers benefit members.

Silver Sneakers: Yoga (AGES 60+)
This yoga class combines simple poses with relaxation and
breathing techniques to help alleviate symptoms related to high

GIRL (Grow Into Respectable Ladies) promotes self-esteem, respect

Parents’ Night Out (AGES 6-15)
Need an evening without the kids? Parents’ Night Out gives parents
the opportunity to take a well-deserved break. Go out for a night on
the town feeling confident that your little ones are safe and having
fun. Snacks will be provided.

Parks Playplace (AGES 2-5)
Bring your tots to enjoy our indoor playground! This is a great time
for little ones to run around, make friends, and burn off some of that

School’s Out Mini Camps (AGES 6-13)
Worried about what to do with your kids on those school holidays?

Bridge Club (AGES 60+)
In search of a fourth person to play bridge? Never played, but always
wanted to learn? We’ve got you covered! Come by our Bridge Club and

This is a free computer class for our senior patrons. They will learn
the main components of a computer, how to log on, access Microsoft
Office, surf the Internet, set up an email account, and navigate social
media.
