Ambassador provides me with the opportunity to meet many new
business owners and welcome them to the West Pasco Chamber
of Commerce. I have also made many wonderful friends through
the Ambassador’s Club.
In 2015, Jim & I celebrated Pasco Camera’s 20th anniversary. We
are the only full service camera store on the Nature Coast. We sell
new and used digital cameras and accessories priced competitively
with the other stores. With over 4,000 items in the store, we stock
specialty items for photographers from beginners to professionals.
Many people utilize our media transfer services including copying
video tapes and home movies to DVDs and audio tapes to Audio
CDs. Other services offered include restoring old photos, camera
repairs, and digital camera classes. Chamber members receive a
10% discount on many of the accessory items we stock. I am also
active with Greater New Port Richey Main Street organization and

Current Pasco County
Crime Trends and
Crime Prevention Efforts
Over the next two months, we will be listing and describing some
of the most prevalent crime trends that we have been fighting in Pasco
County and the Tampa Bay area. You may have heard about some
of these crimes, others may be new to you. These crimes underscore
what we have been saying for years: Although criminals are always
trying to find ways to rip you off, there are ways to protect yourself.
Scams and con games – These “too good to be true” scams are
only limited by the imagination of the crooks and the peoples’ trust
that they are legitimate opportunities or that someone is trying to
“help” them. Some of the ones we have been seeing include the “Jury
Scam,” where someone calls or emails you to tell you that you missed
jury duty or a court date and that you have to pay a fine or go to jail.
Another one is an email or “pop-up” ad on your computer that states
you have serious computer troubles that need to be fixed. If you allow
the computer “technician” to remotely access your computer, you find
yourself locked out until you pay a fee.
Unlocked vehicles and valuables left in vehicles – We must continually remind people to lock their vehicle doors and to remove anything
of value from inside. But we continue to see people who are victimized because they do not heed this simple advice. Remember to Keep
What’s Yours, Lock Your Doors. Also, park in well-lit areas; remove all
keys from vehicle and report any suspicious activity, like someone
looking into cars and checking the door handles to see if they open.
Lock residence doors and windows – We have seen recent thefts
from homes and apartments where criminals are merely walking in
from unlocked openings, often while the residents are home asleep.
You should always have all of your doors and windows locked, whether
you are home or not. Do not keep your garage door open during the
day either; this is just providing an opportunity for a crook to come
in and take what they want. For our “snow bird” seasonal residents,
Operation Dark House is a program that we provide to check the
houses of citizens who only live here part of the year.
Felony Lane – This is a crime that we use to describe when outof-area criminals come into our county and prey upon citizens who
leave their cars running, often with valuables inside, just to quickly run
into a store, drop the kids off at daycare, etc. They also target vehicles
parked at churches and sporting venues with purses or valuables
in plain view. These criminals stake out such areas and strike in the
short time you are away from your vehicle. Again, lock your car doors,
don’t leave your car running without you behind the wheel, and do
not leave valuables in the car.
Cybercrimes against children – Parents need to be aware of the
latest technology and software programs that their children are using on their electronic devices and to check their child(ren)’s devices
regularly for anything out-of-the-ordinary. These devices are often
used by criminals to gain a foothold in your child’s life, then gain their
trust, and try to entice them into doing something that you would
not approve of. These devices include cellphones, gaming systems,
and computers.
Next month, we will examine some of the more prevalent businessrelated crimes and some crime prevention techniques to help thwart
the crooks that attempt them.
• Business vehicle burglaries – Crooks know that there is business
gear/equipment in these vehicles.
• CPTED – How organizations can “design” crime prevention in their
business environment.
• Camera Registration program (Crime Reports) – This allows citizens
and businesses to provide footage from their own surveillance
cameras to law enforcement if a crime has been committed nearby.

When a Neighborhood School
is No Longer
the Neighborhood’s School
by Kurt S. Browning, Superintendent of Pasco
County Public Schools
As superintendent, my job is to ensure that every student in Pasco
County Schools receives a quality education in a safe learning environment. When student enrollment exceeds a school’s capacity there is a
considerable burden placed on the entire school community. We are
finding ourselves in this situation as the enrollment of several district
schools exceeds their capacity, and now that new home construction
is on the upswing, we will be seeing more strain on our schools.
We currently are in the process of building three schools. The first
one, Elementary W, is going up across from John Long Middle School
and Wiregrass Ranch High School in Wesley Chapel. This school is
scheduled to open in August 2016.
High School GGG is under construction on Old Pasco Road in
Wesley Chapel. It is scheduled to open in August 2017, and will be
a 6th through 12th grade center.
The third school is Elementary B, which will be built in the Bexley
Ranch subdivision on State Road 54 in Odessa. This school also is
scheduled to open in August 2017.
These three schools all are planned to address crowding in existing schools that is anticipated to become more acute when all of the
new homes are built in the next five years. What does this mean?
Unfortunately, it means that we no longer can promise that school
boundaries won’t change.
That is why we strongly urge realtors not to use nearby schools as
a selling point when they list homes for sale. The biggest complaint
we get when we have to change school boundaries is from parents
who moved into a neighborhood specifically to send their children
to the neighborhood school.
While we can’t promise parents that the school their home is
zoned for when they buy it will continue to be their children’s assigned
school, we can promise that it is our mission to provide a world-class
education at every Pasco County school.
CARES CEO Plans to Retire
CARES together with the Board of Directors
is announcing the planned retirement of its
President/CEO, Bill Aycrigg. Bill has been the
leader of CARES for 28 years. During that time
the organization has grown and diversified in
many areas of senior health care as well as educational and social activities. He will leave CARES
at the end of the year to enjoy retirement with his
family. Founded in 1973, Community Aging and
Retirement Services is a non-profit organization based in Hudson that
provides a continuum of care and services for seniors in West Central
Florida. Bobbi Tafara, Chair of the BOD said: “While I can’t imagine
CARES without Bill, I know he will enjoy his well-deserved retirement.”
Aycrigg stated, “I have been blessed to have had the opportunity
to work with a truly community-based organization that lives its’ mission and to have made such close professional associations and dear
personal friendships. Our community continues to support CARES and
the agency makes a real difference in the lives of residents. Myriam
and I are looking forward to the next chapter.”

help you de-stress and wind down after a busy day. I also love to
do therapeutic work aka “fixing” that problem area, whether it is
your neck, back and shoulders, if you have sciatica issues, carpal
tunnel syndrome, plantar faciitis, or headaches. I am always honing my skills through research, training, and experiencing new
techniques to provide you with the most healing and relaxing
massage experience that you deserve! Veteran-owned. Check out
my Facebook page for more information and photos.
I give a $10 discount to chamber members and their immediate family. I also offer gift certificates online on my MassageBook

2015 Clerks for a Cure Team
Over 45 Clerks for a Cure team members laced up their tennis
shoes for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at The
Shops at Wiregrass, on Saturday, October 24th. This year, the Clerks
for a Cure team was recognized as the 1st place team, collecting
over $16,000 for the cause. Over 5,000 walkers participated in the
event, which raised over $171,000. Office fundraisers were held
throughout 2015 and included cook-offs, bowling, jeans days,
bingo, a golf scramble, and multiple quilt, afghan, and basket raffles.
The 5k (3 mile) non-competitive walk supports the mission
of the American Cancer Society (ACS) to fight the disease with
breast cancer research, information and services, and access to
mammograms for women who need them. All of the money raised
for this American Cancer Society event will be used locally to fight
the disease and provide valuable services to cancer patients.
Together, we will help celebrate more birthdays and one day
finish the fight against cancer!
Blight Reduction Ordinance
Ensuring that Pasco County continues on a path of prosperous development is a task that requires adequate planning,
fostering economic growth and successful implementation of
ordinances. With this in mind, Pasco County has currently approved an ordinance that targets rehabilitation or demolition of
dilapidated industrial and commercial buildings. Even though
the Land Development Code already defined blighted structures
and included some standards for nonresidential properties, this
ordinance includes additional measures such as citations, fines,
time limit for boarded structures, security and additional maintenance requirements.
This is a crucial step in preventing and resolving blighted
conditions in some areas of the county. Structures in these conditions are not only unsightly, but tend to attract criminal activities
such as illegal dumping and drug dealing, making residents feel
unsafe. If blight is not addressed, it proliferates becoming increasingly costly and difficult for communities to control. The tendency
is for blight to cause a domino effect first making property values
to decline in these areas. This in turn dissuades other property
Page 10 • Chamber News
owners from spending in improving and keeping up their properties. Then, generally, interest in investing in these areas decreases
from prospective buyers and lending institutions.
To effectively implement this ordinance, Pasco County will
coordinate the necessary strategies between its code enforcement
and legal departments to hold property owners accountable. However, citizen involvement has proven to be decisive factor in the
effectiveness blight reduction strategies. Since blight is not an
uncommon problem in urban areas across the nation and is not
an issue which is resolved in the short term, having the vision to
be proactive is imperative for healthy progress.
