BREATHING AIR SYSTEMS
Was introduced in 1992 as a division of Connors Diving Services. Our company first entered into sales and service of breathing air compressors in 1985 and has steadily grown
throughout Atlantic Canada. Since that time, we have had the opportunity to supply and
support regional fire fighting services as well as the commercial and recreational scuba
diving industry. The following is a short list of current products and services we offer.
JORDAIR COMPRESSORS
We chose Jordair Compressors because Jordair uses only the highest quality Bauer compressor
blocks and ancillary parts. BAUER Compressors Group is known as an innovative, high quality
manufacturer of compressor components for over 50 years. Jordair relies on Bauer compressor
blocks to manufacture all their compressor systems.
Jordair holds the distinction of being the only completely CSA approved compressor on the
market. With competitive pricing and Bauer dependability, Jordair provides the finest high
pressure air compressor available. Breathing Air Systems has trained technicians and a fully
stocked parts department to ensure reliability throughout the life of your compressed air system.
Filtration Towers
BAS has a line of filtration towers which utilize disposable cartridges. BAS also has after-separator
columns, back-pressure regulators and various other accessories and parts to support a wide
range of compressor systems.
Gas Control Valves And Components
BAS maintains a complete inventory of components, upgrade parts, replacement parts and filter
cartridges to support your compressed air delivery system.
Air Samples
CSA standards require that your air be certified by an approved laboratory every six months. Our
factory trained technicians can ensure that this requirement is maintained.
On-Site Start-Up
We do not consider a sale final until we have installed our equipment and started it up to make
sure everything is as it should be. We pioneered this service and are proud we did. Some of
our competitors have attempted to copy this service, and we take that as a compliment to our
company.
Training
When we install and start-up a new compressor, we also provide on-site training for all personnel
who will be operating and maintaining the equipment. The training costs are included with the
installation of a new compressor system.

The Heart Of Jordair Compressors
The heart of Jordair Compressors is the BAUER Compressor blocks and Filtration Systems.
BAUER has been manfacturing compressors since 1946 and has developed into an important
industrial group known worldwide for it's modern high pressure compressors. Bauer exports to
more than 50 countries and are continuously exchanging the latest technology and expertise
with their associates and international business partners. BAUER innovations have kept Jordair
at the forefront of compressor suppliers. Jordair Compressors is the exclusive agent for BAUER
Kompressoren GmbH for Canada.
The BAUER compressor stands above the rest of the field in durability and engineering. BAUER
units are designed specifically for high pressure breathing air applications.
A major distinction between the BAUER compressor and most others is that BAUER units are
designed to run at COOLER operating temperatures to improve reliability.
- BAUER uses roller or ball bearings at every wear point, instead of sleeve bearings. This
provides cooler operation and longer life of the unit.
- A greater number of cooling fins and deeper cooling fins on heads, cylinders, and cooling
coils provide better air circulation for cooler operating temperatures. This allows for truly
CONTINUOUS operation without need for cool down periods.
- True HIGH PRESSURE oil lubrication is used in BAUER units instead of the splash system
which is a lubrication method used by many other manufacturers. HIGH PRESSURE
lubrication contributes greatly to cooler operation and compressor working life.
- BAUER units use only SINGLE-ACTING pistons, while many others have one or more
stacked cylinders or double-acting pistons. SINGLE-ACTING pistons reduce moving part
contact surface area lowering lubrication demands.

COMPRESSOR
CONFIGURATIONS
The compressors in this catalogue are divided into three general categories:
1 - Vertical Compressors (three configurations)
a - "Vertical" where the compressor frame has the compressor block mounted above the motor section. This configuration requires less floor space
than horizontal compressors. Vertical compressors have independent
rubber anti-vibration mounting of both the compressor and the motor.
b - "US" or Ultra Silent where the vertical frame is completely enclosed in a
sound suppression cabinet. Motors and compressor blocks have independent rubber anti-vibration mounting.
c - "Integrated" where the compressor air storage/cascade cylinders and fill
panel are all integrated into a single enclosed sound suppression cabinet.
Again, motors and compressor blocks have independent rubber anti-vibration mounting.
2 - "B" series compressors are also available in a vertical configuration where
the frame is completely open. "B" series compressors also have independent rubber anti-vibration mounting of both the compressor and the motor.
3 - Horizontal compressors are typically open frame and are ideally suited as
shipboard SCUBA compressors with their low center of gravity. Horizontal frame
compressors also have independent rubber anti-vibration mounting of the compressor and the motor. In addition to these configurations, Breathing Air Systems
can supply two highly portable compressors ideally suited to the SCUBA industry.
These two compressors are available in either gas or electric formats.

Fill Control Panel
B.A.S. has standard
control panels and can
custom design and assemble to meet your
specific requirements.
Enclosed filling Station with
Fragmentation Protection
For safety reasons, enclosed fill
stations are recommended. The
semi-enclosed design offers excellent protection to the fill station
operator. External connections
are provided for filling oversized
cylinders.
COMPRESSORS
Standard Configurations
Silent Series compressors are available in many
formats and are ideally suited for areas that require low
noise. Cascade and compressed air storage banks and
control panels can be placed in other locations and
compressed air piped to air fill facilities.
Silent Series
Open Series compressors are basically identical in
format to the Silent series compressors. Although the
compressor compartment is open, this series has the same
vibration isolation sub-frame for both the motor assembly
and the compressor block that are present in the Silent
series. Only the motor compartment is enclosed.
Open Series
Integrated Series compres-
sors expand on the Silent series
by integrating air storage/cascade
bank and the air fill station and
control panel all in a single stationary structure. This format is ideally
suited for areas where silence and
security are a priority. This series
has the same vibration isolation
sub-frame for both the motor assembly and the compressor block
that are present in the "Silent"
series. All compartments are enclosed.

FILL STATIONS
“Sr” Series Fill Stations
STANDARD FEATURES
· The “SR” series SCBA recharging system is a free-standing and complete filling station for
2216 and/or 4500 PSI cylinders. The SCBA refilling station is of a semi-enclosed design to
contain a SCBA cylinder failure or ruptured SCBA fill hose.
· Heavy wall schedule 80 steel 8” pipe used to contain the SCBA cylinders within the
recharge station.
· Anti-abrasion collars and liners in the SCBA containment sleeves to protect the exterior of
the SCBA cylinders from abrasion damage during the filling process.
· 6000 PSI inlet shut off valve to isolate the recharging station from the compressor and air
storage cylinders.
· One anodized aluminum, self-venting and adjustable regulator with operating pressures
from 0 to 6,000 PSI inlets and 0 to 6000 PSI outlet pressures.
· Self-venting regulator comes complete with 21⁄2” inlet and discharge pressure gauges.
· Gauges are rated for 10,000 & 6,000 PSI. Gauges read in both the SI and Imperial System
of units.
· Liquid filled 21⁄2” pressure gauges for 4500 PSI filling, installed for each fill outlet to indicate
SCBA recharge pressure. Gauges are rated for 6000 PSI and read in both the SI and
Imperial System of units.
· Panel mounted SCBA cylinder shut off valves for 2216 or 4500 PSI fill positions.
· SCBA recharge assemblies are supplied for 2216 or 4500 PSI filling.
· A CRN certified adjustable safety relief valve is set for 2400 or 4700 PSI to protect the filling
of the 2216 or 4500 PSI SCBA.
· The SCBA 4500 PSI cylinder fill hose assemblies will only recharge the high-pressure 4.5
SCBA cylinders. If a 2216 SCBA cylinder is accidentally connected to the 4500 PSI filling
hose the filling adaptor will automatically vent to the atmosphere.
· All recharge hose assemblies are equipped with restriction orifices set to the CSA Z94.4 rate
of 300 PSI per minute, to control filling speed. When a cascade system is used, this prevents
rapid SCBA cylinder expansion and significant pressure drop due to the compression heat
created during a rapid refilling situation.
· The fill station is manufactured to CSA regulation Z180.1-00 and CSA Z94.4

FILTRATION TOWERS
BAS has a line of Filter Towers which utilize disposable
cartridges. BAS also has after-separator columns, backpressure regulators and other accessories available for
many different types of compressor systems. Our standard
filter towers are constructed from high tensile 7075
aluminum for 5000 PSIG services. Each has threaded,
O-ring sealed end caps.
An After-Separator, also called a coalescor, is a 3.75"x11"
tower that fits between the compressor and the filtration
towers to mechanically dry the air to about 99%. A manual
vent on the bottom of the separator column allows the
oil/water sludge to be periodically drained off. Without
adequate after-separation, the effectiveness of the chemical
filters will be impaired and expensive cartridges will be
rapidly expended. All units are designed for a 6000 PSIG
service and come without a drain valve.
Short Filter Towers are typically a 3.75"x 16" tower using a
10" disposable chemical cartridge. The threaded end caps
simplify replacing the cartridges. Each tower will process
about 12000 cu.ft. of air per cartridge.
Tall Filter Towers (33") will treat about 22000 cu.ft. of air
per 27" filter cartridge.

AIR PROCESSING CHEMICALS
Most modern air filtration systems utilize
disposable chemical cartridges. Some
shops still prefer to use bulk chemicals
to repack their own filter towers or to
use repackable stainless liners within
aluminum housings. Although somewhat time-consuming and inconvenient,
repacking can be an economical alternative compared to disposable cartridges
for high volume operations. B.A.S. sells
high quality bulk filtrants for repacking
purposes.
cants. The dessicant stage will remove
any moisture left in the compressed air.
When damp, the effectiveness of charcoal is reduced and may even release
previously absorbed contaminants. Also,
wet activated carbon, of even high quality, may form small amounts of Sulfuric
Acid which in time can do serious damage to the inside of a filter housing.
HOPCALITE 300
Is a manganese dioxide based catalyst
that oxidizes carbon monoxide in high
ACTIVATED CARBON pressure compressed air to the more
tolerable carbon dioxide. The latter gas

will then be absorbed and removed by
activated carbon. Use Hopcalite whenever:
(a) The quality of your air intake
is questionable, ie. in metropolitan/
industrial areas etc., or
(b) the compressor operating conditions are marginal causing it to run hot
or pump for extended periods.
NOTE: Hopcalite is inactivated by moisture, so it must always be placed after the
dessicant in the filtration train, but before
the charcoal.

MOLECULAR SIEVE 13 X
Molecular sieves are a group of space
age chemicals known as Zeolites which
have outstanding filtration abilities.
Their chemical structure is a narrow,
rigid, and uniform crystalline lattice
which has such a precise pore size that
it restricts the movement of substances
based upon their molecular size. Even
small molecules such as water can enter
the filter but are retained by the lattice
hence the name "Molecular Sieve".
Molecular sieves are highly effective
filtrants for moisture, nitrogen oxide, oil
vapor, and limited amounts of carbon
monoxide and dioxide. Variety 13X is
the best formulation for processing compressed air because it is designed to trap
water vapor.

COMPRESSOR LUBRICANTS
Compressor lubricants have large moisture absorbing capacities, and extremely high ignition or "Flash
Points". Regular automotive oils can not be used in
compressors because they may explode under the
high temperatures and pressures!
the physical properties of synthetic lubricants make
them worth the price. Synthetic compressor lubricants have extremely high flash points, very low
carbon formation, excellent lubrication, and prolonged stability.
Modern compressor lubricants may be either mineral or synthetic based. Although more expensive,
BAS stocks both mineral and synthetic compressor oils.
MINERAL compressor oil formulated for
moisture absorption and elevated flash
point and is available in either 1 or 4 litre
containers.
SYNTHETIC compressor oil available
in either 1 or 4 litre containers.
O-RING LUBRICANT Dow-Corning Silicone grease valve lubricant and sealant.

PSI CYLINDER VISUAL INSPECTOR'S COURSE
High pressure cylinders are a valued asset to the
many tasks performed by fire fighters. Breathing
air is reserved in large storage cylinders while
SCBA's extend the fire fighters' capabilities;
divers carry life-giving air.
Cylinders for those services are well made
and can give long service life. However, when
damage (in any of several forms) occurs to
these vessels, extreme danger may exist. Small
3000 psi aluminum cylinders carried by both
fire fighters and divers often contain over one
million pounds of explosive energy. Spontaneous
rupture of abused cylinders kill and maim people,
disintegrate vehicles and blow buildings apart.
This has even happened here in Canada.

GLOSSARY
AMBIENT - The surrounding environment. Compressor
placement and air intake should consider ambient qualities
such as temperature, moisture and air quality.
Health and Safety" Standard. Covers air purity, air rotation,
compressor maintenance including filters, and cylinder
inspection frequency.
ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers)
- An independent organization that rates and tests high
pressure gas containers and fittings.
DISCHARGE PRESSURE - The absolute total pressure
at the discharge outlet of a compressor. Compressors
should not be operated at pressures greater than their rated
maximum discharge pressure, even if they are mechanically
capable of generating higher pressures.
AUTOMATIC CONDENSATE DRAIN An electropneumatic device that drains the moisture collected by
the separator in a compressor system at fixed intervals
automatically without system decompression.
BLEEDING - The manual or automatic draining of
condensed oil/water mixture from the compressor.
CASCADE SYSTEM - A group (or series of groups) of air
storage cylinders connected together each with a separate
valve.
C.F.M. (Cubic Feet per Minute) - The volume of air that
a compressor pumps. Compressor ratings are expressed
for 'standard' conditions which are 20°C and 1 atmosphere
pressure.
C.G.A. (Compressed Gas Association) - An independent
organization that sets standards for compressed air purity
and compressed gas fittings.
CO (Carbon Monoxide) - An odourless, tasteless and
invisible gas that is produced when oxygen is unavailable
during combustion. When inhaled, it blocks blood's
normal capacity to carry oxygen and can be lethal even
in low concentrations. High concentrations in compressed
air usually results from high operating temperature of a
compressor.
CO 2 (Carbon Dioxide) - An odourless, tasteless,
invisible gas that is a normal by-product of combustion.
It's concentration in the human body serves as a stimulus
to breath.
CO Monitor - An electronic monitor that samples the
airstream to determine the CO content.
CSA - Canadian Standards Association
CSA Z180.1 - "Compressed Breathing Air - Occupational
page
44
D.O.T. (United States Department of Transportation)
- A federal agency that regulates interstate commerce and
has jurisdiction over transporting, rating and testing high
pressure gas containers in the U.S.A. In Canada the
regulating body is Transport Canada or T.C.
FILL RATE - Refers to refilling of high pressure cylinders
and can be expressed in two ways. Fill rate can be the rate
at which compressed air is delivered to a cylinder sometimes
expressed as CFM (cubic feet per minute). Fill rate can
also refer to the total time required to fill a compressed air
cylinder as measured in minutes. For standardized cylinders,
fill rate usually refers to the later measurement, minutes
required to fill a cylinder of that size.
FILL STATION - Technically, the fill station is the protective
device into which small cylinders are placed for the refilling
process. However, the entire breathing air production system
is also still sometimes referred to as a “fill station”.
FILTERS - Today, this usually refers to the pre-inlet devices
that separate and remove dust and dirt before it enters the
first stage of the compressor. In the past, the media through
which the compressed air flowed after compression was
also known as a filter system, however, modern systems
usually refer to post compression stage filtration devices as
the purification system.
FLOW RESTRICTOR - A device that controls or limits
the flow of compressed gas. Typically, a flow restrictor fits
is the path of compressed gas and has an orifice with an
opening diameter smaller than the diameter of the gascarrying vessel. Flow restrictors reduce the volume and
pressure of compressed gas delivered and are often used
to control the fill rate of compressed gas cylinders.
GAUGE - The device by which a pressure measurement is
indicated. In general, pressure gauges should not be used for
pressures greater than approximately 75% of their maximum
face pressure. It is generally recommended that one should
face the gauge away from himself when it is pressurized.
HIGH PRESSURE - Transport Canada defines high
pressure as pressures exceeding 900 psi. In short all SCBA
and SCUBA cylinders are considered high pressure.
HOUR METER - As used in breathing air compressor
applications, is usually of the “accumulative, non-resettable”
type. That is, like an automobile odometer, the hour meter
will always show the total number of operating hours on
the compressor.
HYDROSTATIC TEST - The measurement of the
elasticity of a high pressure cylinder. This is done by
pressurizing the cylinder to a prescribed pressure higher
than its working pressure, and measuring the temporary
expansion of its dimensions, and the permanent expansion,
if any, that remains when it is de-pressurized.
MOISTURE MONITORS - Electronic devices which, by
means of an electronic sensor, or humidistat, are capable
of alarming the operator when a pre-set moisture level
is exceeded. Those which function with a sensing of the
relative humidity are considered somewhat inaccurate, but
can usually sense a gross moisture condition.
OXYGEN CLEAN - Applies to fittings, hoses, regulators,
etc. that are intended for use with pure Oxygen. For this
application, all equipment must be chemically cleaned to
remove all traces of any type of oil or oil residue. Such
equipment, when new, is usually individually packaged,
and then labelled "OXYGEN CLEAN".
P.P.M. - Parts Per Million.
PRESSURE LUBRICATION - A feature in which
pressurized oil from an oil pump is directed to internal
points of a compressor which require absolute lubrication.
Typically, in a high pressure compressor, the working oil
pressure may be 80-1200 PSI. Pressure lubrication is
often combined with “splash” and “mist” lubrication for
various other points within the crankcase. Without pressure
lubrication, it is difficult for lubricant to travel into the upper
cylinder wall area of the high pressure stages.
REGULATOR - A specialized, adjustable valve, the
regulator reduces higher pressure gas to a lower pressure.
Breathing Air Systems
2 Lakeside Park Drive,
Unit 11-2 Lakeside, Nova Scotia
B3T 1L7
Most regulators incorporate an IN pressure gauge (indicating
the supply pressure), and an OUT pressure gauge (indicating
the adjusted/regulated pressure). All regulators are designed
for a fixed MAXIMUM inlet pressure, and a range of
adjustable outlet pressures. FIXED RATIO non-adjustable
regulators are also available, for certain applications. These
reduce the supply pressure a preset percentage. Therefore,
regulated pressure varies with the supply pressure.
REMOTE INTAKE - This refers to the extension of the
compressor’s intake port to another area. This is usually
done when the ambient air available to the compressor is
of unacceptable quality or if air of higher initial quality is
available a short distance from the compressor. An extension
of inappropriate design or dimensions can “throttle” the
intake air, and cause reduced output and high operating
temperatures.
SAFETY RELIEF VALVE - This describes a spring-loaded
valve which is normally in the CLOSED position, and which
releases air when the upstream pressure is greater than the
pre-selected relief pressure. Most such valves will re-close,
when the upstream pressure is reduced.
SEPARATOR - Also known as a condensate trap. A
chamber in which moisture is removed from the air, by
impingement, coalescence, expansion, temperature change,
or any of a number of other mechanical means. In the typical
high pressure compressor used for breathing air applications,
separator chambers are usually used between each of the
stages of compression, and another final separator is used
just prior to the air’s entry into the purification system.
WORKING PRESSURE - According to the accepted
SAFETY margin for compressed air cylinders, a product’s
designed working pressure will be a fraction of the product’s
designed burst pressure. Some products are marked with
their working pressure, while others are not. Never fill any
compressed air storage system or any of its components to
a pressure higher than its rated working pressure.
