if you don’t encounter the Florida Highway Patrol along the way. It was my lead
along the way, and somewhere a couple
hours east of Mobile we were cruising
along between 80 and 90 mph, (“did I say

Harley Officer Training (HOT)
in Jacksonville, FL
“I didn't even let off the throttle”
By Terry Reynolds
Not knowing what to expect, but looking forward to the first long road trip of
the year, Brenda and I joined other
H.O.G. officers, Scotty Dodd and Charlotte, Gayla Morgan and John, Rucina
Johnson and Howard on the ride down
to the H.O.T (Harley Officer’s Training)
in Jacksonville, FL, April 15 and 16.
These four patriots rode down, and
were joined later by Butch Jones and
Pat, who drove down and Bill Brusenhan, who flew down to join us.
The trip down was relatively uneventful. Weather was good and no rain
was encountered during the ride, however, we were just hours ahead of a
tornado and severe storms that hammered Jackson, MS. It was a bit unsettling to think that the same area we had
just traversed was now in ruins.
We made the trip in two segments,
spending the first night in Mobile, AL.
On the coast, as expected, we had a
good meal of fresh sea food, thanks to
Howard’s selection of restaurants.
From Mobile the next morning, we began the long ride across Interstate 10.
For anyone who hasn’t traveled that
road, it is flat and straight, and allows
for covering a lot of miles in a short
time,
Florida uses a color scheme on their patrol vehicles that blends in very well with
the trees along in median area. I
rounded a slight curve and there in the
median trees was………. I didn’t even let
off the throttle. He had me if he wanted
me. I looked in the left mirror to see if he
was going to give chase, but what I saw
was NOT the Trooper pulling out, but my
three companions WAAAAAAAAAY behind. Nothing like being left out in front
alone. “Speedo” Scotty said later that if
he had pulled out after me, he would assist, by waving the Trooper around and
then they would wait for me at the next
exit.
Once we arrived in the Jacksonville area,
I relinquished my role in the lead to Head
Road Captain John Morgan, to find our
way to the hotel. Over the next several
days, Captain John became known as
“Cap’n Gadget” for his affinity for electronic gadgets! Any questions, Cap’n
John had his iPhone out for GPS directions!
But now it was down to business. Not
knowing what to expect, I was very much
surprised. This was truly a working trip.
For two full days, Friday and Saturday,
we had a solid schedule of classes and
workshops to attend. The Harley folks
really put on a great training, and as a
first time attendee, I was a bit overwhelmed as to the serious side of the
H.O.G. business.
We like to have fun, but the business side
of this size of an organization is tremendous. We had formal class trainings on a
wide variety of topics but the most useful
were the “break-out” sessions that put us
in groups with other officers in the similar
positions.
As Membership Officer, most of my interactions were in groups with other Membership Officers and also Newsletter Editors and Ladies of Harley. I quickly found
that there are issues that others have that
are similar to our local group and I found
how other Chapters address those issues.
Continued on page 4
Continued from page 3
Hopefully that will make me better
able to fulfill the Membership Officer
role for the Chapter.
The “downer” side of the meetings
were relating to the “legal issues”
and other proprieties that go along
with operating an organization.
H.O.G. is sensitive to the legal requirements that seem to take more
and more of our time and paper, but
in an ever increasing litigious world,
we have to protect ourselves, you
as members and the dealer whenever we can. They are working to
streamline and simplify these issues
all the time.
But, what I did not really expect is to
find out just how fortunate we here
in Hot Springs are to have a dealership and a store manager who supports us and we support them. A
number of Chapters lacked this
support and good relationship. Without this good relationship things
would be so difficult.
Also, I found that we are also fortunate to have the good quality members in the Chapter. Thanks to each
and every one of you who join us and
give of your time and talents to participate in the meetings and events.
Without you we wouldn’t have a
Chapter.
We are triple blessed in our Chapter
and attending this training makes
you really appreciate it. The group
split up for the trip home, John and
Gayla and Brenda and I opted for a
two day return across northern Alabama. The others elected to take a
three day return via Savannah, GA,
but all returned home safely.
BUT, despite a lot of work, a good
time was had by all. Thank you for
allowing me to attend.
