Camera! APL! Letter from Jennifer Annable Executive Director Welcome to the 9th Annual APL Auction! I am excited to have you all here tonight as we come together as a community to celebrate APL. Tonight is especially exciting since we are recognizing our APL families who work tirelessly to support not only their students but also our staff. I am so thankful for all the opportunities that I get to work with and spend time with families. My favorite times of the school day are drop off and pick up when I get to see and interact with families. And, my favorite day of the week is Thursday when parent volunteers are in the hall running the coffee cart. It brings me such joy to see so many families gathered around the cart, enjoying each other’s company. I am also very thankful for all the support the families have given to help put together tonight’s event. From procurement, to data entry, to decorations, to corporate sponsorship. Not only have people given of their time, they have also been extremely generous with their financial support. APL is so lucky to have such an amazing group of families!!! I am also excited tonight to be honoring Ruth Hayes-Short and Yellow Wood Academy. When the APL Board was considering starting the High School, we knew Yellow Wood was very knowledgeable about the ins and outs of running one and could be a good mentor for us. So, we turned to Ruth to discuss a possible partnership with Yellow Wood. I had had the pleasure of working with Ruth in a previous job over 30 8 Lights! Camera! APL! years ago, and was thrilled to have the opportunity to work with her again. We can’t thank Yellow Wood enough for all of the support they have given us with our High School and we look forward to continuing and growing our partnership. We especially want to honor Ruth tonight as she moves on to retirement. A big THANK YOU to Ruth, Yellow Wood and our APL families! Thank you for coming tonight; I hope you have a wonderful time! Sincerely, Jennifer Annable 9 Lights! Camera! APL! Letter from Jonathan Kil APL Board President Dear Auction Attendees, As Board President I want thank you for attending tonight’s auction and fundraiser. Some of you may remember that we had our first two high school graduates last year; one now successfully enrolled at Bellevue College, the other full time with the SPS Bridges program. This year one of our seniors scored in the top 10% nationally on the SAT and received early admittance at his first choice university, and another senior will be trekking the globe before entering a 4 year university. This is a watershed moment for APL, especially since our high school is only 3 years old! In addition, we developed our first experiential learning weeks for the upper school students (6th-12th) where many ventured off campus to participate in diverse activities from mountaineering, to working in a commercial kitchen, to learning about some cutting edge science and medicine. We are excited to tackle the challenges that come with the continued growth of our K-12 inclusion programs and to expand our model to serve even more students in the coming years. I would like to take this opportunity to extend my sincerest gratitude to our dedicated students, families, teachers, staff, and supporters who have made APL a cutting edge and inclusive K-12 school. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we are grateful for your support. On a personal note, this year, our youngest son Mitchell, enrolled in the K-1 class where he learned that going to school was “cool”, something Payton our oldest son (an APL 8th grader), has already picked up on. Thank you, Jonathan Kil, MD 10 Lights! Camera! APL! Recognizing Ruth Hayes-Short & Yellow Wood Academy It is our honor to recognize Yellow Wood Academy, a nationally accredited K-12 non-profit school and Executive Director Ruth HayesShort, who helped make the dream of an APL High School become a reality. Jennifer and one of APL’s founders, and (then) board member, Nancy Gordon met with Ruth in 2013. They discussed how Yellow Wood could help APL establish our own unique high school and that was the beginning of a beautiful partnership. Since then, Yellow Wood has supported the launch and expansion of APL’s High School by providing advanced class instruction, transcript creation and monitoring, academic and college guidance and curriculum management. Thank you Yellow Wood for being a wonderful partner to APL! We are also honored to recognize Ruth, who after a 49 year career in Education, is retiring from Yellow Wood Academy. Ruth began her career as an English teacher and later moved into special education. She eventually became an administrator and principal in numerous public schools. She’s designed curriculum, implemented new programs, and has been a mentor to many teachers and principals. Originally a Yellow Wood parent and then board member, Ruth became executive director in 2008, and led the transformation of Yellow Wood from a small tutoring-focused organization into a vibrant learning and school environment. Thank You Ruth for leading the Yellow Wood Academy and APL partnership! We wish you the best! 11 Lights! Camera! APL! Many Thanks to Tonight’s Auctioneer & Emcee BRADY HAMMRICH, AUCTIONEER APL is excited to have Brady return as our auctioneer tonight! Brady has partnered with Stokes Auction Group, Inc. since 1994, supporting charitable causes around the country. He is the friend every nonprofit needs. Clients have welcomed Brady as a part of their family and look forward to seeing him year after year at their events. He has earned a place of respect with organizations of all types but has a special place in his heart for causes serving children. Thank You for helping APL Brady! JIMMY NIXON, EMCEE APL is thrilled to have Jimmy Nixon, founder and executive director of Broadway Bound Children’s Theatre, return as our emcee this evening! In the past 19 years, Jimmy has led the growth of a company that began as an after school program serving a handful of students, into a successful non-profit that serves more than 1,500 young artists each year. In addition to lending his talents to APL students on a weekly basis, Jimmy continues to touch the hearts of hundreds of kids in the community. As a talented performer, director, writer and teacher, we are pleased to have him lending his talents to APL this evening. Thank you Jimmy! 12 Lights! Camera! APL! 13 Lights! Camera! APL! The Hollywood Canteen The Hollywood Canteen was the jewel in the crown of World War II Hollywood. Co-created by Betty Davis and John Garfield, the canteen ran from 1942 to 1945 in a converted barn in Hollywood. The canteen was free to all servicemen or women, regardless of race, inviting them to jive to the music of Harry James, laugh at Bob Hope’s jokes, be handed sandwiches from Rita Hayworth, or dance with Hedy Lamar! The Harry James Orchestra Harry James played with the Benny Goodman Band before forming his own band in 1939 with a gifted but little known vocalist, Frank Sinatra. He was also the husband of American film star Betty Grable. In 1989, local legend and award winning musician Fred Radke took over as director of the Orchestra and with the help of the talented and beautiful vocalist Gina Funes, this band is still swinging! We are delighted to have the Harry James Orchestra leading our after party celebration tonight! Please join us for a salute to the golden age of swing! 14 Lights! Camera! APL!
