Beyond Music – Expanding into greater promise and
possibilities

Although the world of music is immense, the potential for our lives is limitless.
We’ve been taught our entire lives to set our goals, but often our goals can be
limiting, creating a model of success and failure -- finished and unfinished. We may
be capable of much more tomorrow than the goals we set for ourselves today. We
all set goals at a young age, planning a life we believe can make us happy -- but our
goals can potentially become the obstacles to our happiness. The reality of being a
full time musician is not possible for everyone who sets that goal. As young aspiring
musicians, we too often think a career in music is an all or nothing proposition.
But a career in music can be whatever we want it to be and we can explore other
passions outside of music in which to make our living. Developing skills outside of
music helps create the potential for staying in music. The promise and possibilities
of tomorrow requires a broader vision beyond what we can imagine for ourselves
today. There is another life other than the one we’ve planned -- the life that’s
waiting for us, beyond music.

Electrobrass: Building an Electronic Performance
Environment from The Ground Up. Effects Rig,
Software Setup, and Synced Lighting.

In this presentation, Matt Owen will take the group through a step-by-step tutorial
on how to build a quality FX chain for their instrument. I’ll go over steps that
performers take in order to avoid stage issues such as feedback and signal clipping,
and talk about the equipment we use in order to prevent that. I will also talk the
group through the basics of recording a simple passage, and I will apply different
software effects and discuss what different parameters adjust. Also included in
the software portion of this presentation, I will discuss using the laptop for “Live
Effects” such as panning from speaker to speaker, autotune, and live-looping.
For the synced lighting portion of this presentation, I will program a simple but
perfectly synced light show to our previously recorded passage using nothing but
MIDI programming. At the end of the presentation, we will place all three of the
pieces together and perform a piece inside of our newly constructed electronic
environment.

Prototype and Reference Models from the Holton
Factory Reference Collection at the National Music
Museum
In 2008, Conn-Selmer Inc. closed facilities in both Elkhorn and Kenosha, Wisconsin.
The company contacted the National Music Museum in Vermillion, South Dakota
and donated over 350 instruments to the museum, along with boxes of technical
drawings, contracts, memorandums, scrapbooks, photos and other historical
artifacts. This presentation will discuss the most unusual models in the low brass
collection, including a 1930s short-action recording bass, a 1960s GG Bugle in the
shape of a sousaphone with a piston valve and rotary valve, and also a 1950s era BBflat upright tuba with a tuning slide lever.

Jeff Baker is the Assistant Professor of Tuba and
Euphonium at Texas A&M University - Commerce. Dr.
Baker received music degrees from the University of
Oklahoma (BM) and the University of North Texas (MM
and DMA). He was a graduate teaching fellow at the
University of North Texas and he has also taught applied
low brass instruction at Cameron University in Lawton,
Oklahoma. In addition to his experience as a university
educator, Dr. Baker maintained a healthy studio of young
aspiring musicians in the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex for
over ten years. Dr. Baker is the Principal Tuba/Cimbasso
for the Dallas Opera Orchestra. As a freelance musician
on tuba, bass trombone, and cimbasso, he has performed
with numerous ensembles throughout the southwest
including the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the Dallas Winds (formerly the Dallas
Wind Symphony), the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, the Tulsa Symphony
Orchestra, the Allen Philharmonic Orchestra, the Lone Star Wind Orchestra, and
the Wichita Grand Opera. Dr. Baker has also been a part of over fifteen recording
projects on the EPR, Klavier, Mark, and Naxos labels. He has performed as a
featured soloist with the US Army Band and as a concerto competition winner with
the University of North Texas Symphonic Band. Dr. Baker is the conductor and
coordinator for the annual Tuba Christmas celebration held in downtown
Commerce and is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, the
International Tuba and Euphonium Association, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

Dr. Justin Benavidez is the Assistant Professor of Tuba
and Euphonium at Texas A&M University-Kingsville
(TAMUK) and Artist Tuba faculty at the Round Top
Summer Music Festival and Institute. Prior to joining the
faculty at TAMUK, he completed his Doctorate of Musical
Arts as a recipient of the prestigious Horace H. Rackham
Merit Fellowship at the University of Michigan.
Dr. Benavidez was the first tubist to receive both the
New Horizons Fellowship and the Orchestral Fellowship
at the Aspen Music Festival, where he was a student
for six summers. He has performed with the Victoria
Symphony Orchestra (TX), Ann Arbor Symphony
Orchestra, Dearborn Symphony Orchestra, Performance
Santa Fe Orchestra, and the Detroit Civic Orchestra. Dr.
Benavidez is highly sought after as a solo artist. His recent engagements include
a recital at the United States Army Band Tuba and Euphonium Workshop in
Washington, D.C. and a performance as a featured soloist with the Aspen Music
Festival Percussion Ensemble. He was a semifinalist in the Young Texas Music
Artists Competition, the William Byrd Artist Competition, and the International
Lieksa Brass Tuba Solo Competition. He was a finalist and prize laureate at the
Kingsville International Young Performers Competition, the International Tuba and
Euphonium Conference Solo Artist Competition, the Susan Slaughter International
Solo Tuba Artist Competition, and was a two-time finalist at the Leonard Falcone
International Tuba and Euphonium Festival Competition.

Phillip Black

Since 1986
has been Principal tubist with
the Wichita Symphony Orchestra and Wichita Brass
Quintet. He teaches all tuba and euphonium students,
brass pedagogy, and assists with brass chamber music.
Phillip also performs annual faculty recitals, recitals at
brass festivals and guest masterclasses nationally. His
experience prior to arriving in Wichita includes:B.M., Ball
State University; M.M., University Of New Mexico. Former
principal tubist, Flint Symphony Orchestra, Galliard Brass
Ensemble, New Mexico Symphony and New Mexico
Brass Quintet. Substitute tubist, St. Paul Chamber
Orchestra. Former tuba instructor, Flint Institute and the
University of New Mexico. Appears on recordings of the
Musical Heritage Society (Galliard Brass Quintet).

Dr. Brian L. Bowman enjoys a distinguished career as a
soloist, clinician, recording artist, educator and
administrator. Currently, a Regents Professor of Music
(Euphonium) in the College of Music at The University of
North Texas, Dr. Bowman has held the principal
euphonium position, in addition to being a featured
soloist, in each of the bands he has been associated with:
THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN SYMPHONY BAND,
THE UNITED STATES NAVY BAND, THE UNITED STATES
BICENTENNIAL BAND, THE UNITED STATES AIR FORCE
BAND and THE RIVER CITY BRASS BAND. He has
performed as a soloist in all 50 states, Canada, Mexico,
The Virgin Islands, Norway, Finland, Germany, Belgium,
Holland, Great Britain, France, Italy, Switzerland,
Australia, Japan, Taiwan, Tonga, Thailand and the People’s Republic of China. His
students occupy prominent positions in professional organizations worldwide
including many in Washington, DC and other military bands. He is the author of
PRACTICAL HINTS FOR PLAYING THE EUPHONIUM/BARITONE HORN and his
edition of the ARBAN COMPLETE METHOD is the only complete bass clef edition
of this famous brass method.. In 1989 he was awarded the British Magazines
“EUPHONIUM PLAYER OF THE YEAR”, and in 1995 was given the LIFETIME
ACHIEVEMENT AWARD from the Tubists Universal Brotherhood Association and
most recently at the 2010 ITEC, the CLIFFORD BEVAN AWARD FOR MERITORIOUS
WORK IN LOW BRASS SCHOLARSHIP. He is the only living euphoniumist to be
included in the book TWENTIETH-CENTURY BRASS SOLOISTS by Michael
Meckna.

Boyd Street Brass is a group rooted in the
tradition of the New Orleans street band. Less
than two years old, the group is already in high
demand at concerts, festivals, parades, schools,
and is thrilling audiences with their blend of
funk, swing, Latin, and pop.
The debut CD of Boyd Street Brass, “Sup Sucka,”
exemplifies the unique quality of the band; a
quality that separates the group from other brass
bands in the U.S. The CD consists of fourteen
original works each having its own character. The variety of styles alone makes this
album enjoyable, whether it’s the straight ahead swing of “Fire,” the funk groove
of “Crusty White,” or the Zydeco beat of the CD title track, “Sup Sucka Akcus Pus.”
This, combined with the music’s range of tempi, colors, and dynamics, as well as
periods of interesting structural design, keeps these tunes consistently fresh for
the listener. The kind of diversity found in this music is also key to highlighting
the distinct sounds of the individual members of the band. All seven players are
featured at different times throughout the CD and featured in multiple ways. This is
most easily recognized with the inclusion of four vocal charts. With each track the
listener finds new surprises. Every tune is packed with quirks and unexpected turns
but at the same time maintains an element of familiarity. Every tune is full of power
and energy and yet possesses an inner beauty. These tunes, all together, performed
by these seven musicians create a thrilling listening experience. “Sup Sucka” will
certainly be a welcome addition to any music collection.
The most compelling aspect of this band is its members’ wide range of
professional experiences. Brian Dobbins, sousaphone, is tubist with the Santa Fe
Symphony and Fountain City Brass Band. Dr. Jonathan Nichol, tenor saxophone,
is a member of the internationally recognized H2 Quartet and was a member of the
Jimmy Dorsey Band and the Grand Rapids Jazz Orchestra. Jay Wilkinson, trumpet/
vocals/principal arranger, is a member of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic and
the Oklahoma City Jazz Orchestra. Eric Walschap, bari/alto sax, and Daryl Nagode,
trombone, come from successful local bands, Pidgin and Banana Seat. Brian Dailey,
drum set, recently returned from performing on a well-known cruise line. These
musicians have established themselves in the competitive world of music and have
now come together to excite audiences with a mix of virtuosity, self-expression,
and a little attitude.

Dr. Chris Buckley is one of the newest members of the
United States Army Band. He grew up in a large family on
the South Texas border. While in Texas he competed in
several international euphonium solo competitions,
including the Leonard Falcone International Solo
Competition where he won 1st place in 2009. While at
the University of North Texas he played in many
professional ensembles including the Dallas Wind
Symphony, Lone Star Wind Ensemble, and the Dallas
Civic Wind Ensemble. He also performs on tuba and
trombone in many jazz ensembles. He lives in Arlington,
Virginia with his wife Leah where they are constantly
searching for Mexican food as good as the food in Texas.
They live with two crazy cats named Oscar and Battle
Cat.

Dr. Rebecca Coberly, soprano, is Assistant Professor of Voice at the University
of Texas - Pan American. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance
from Texas Tech University, a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from Rice
University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Northwestern University. Prior to
her appointment at UTPA, Dr. Coberly served as a graduate teaching assistant at
Texas Tech, teaching applied voice, diction, and assisting with stage productions.
She has also served as Adjunct Instructor at Alvin Community College and taught
private voice in several independent school districts in the greater Houston area.
She is an active member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and the
College Music Society.
Dr. Coberly is a versatile performer of recital, operatic and oratorio performances. She was winner of the 2008-2009 Texas Tech University Symphony Orchestra
Concerto Competition. Recent stage performances include Susanna in Le Nozze
di Figaro, Baby Doe in The Ballad of Baby Doe, Giulietta in I Capuleti e i Montecchi, Mrs. Darling in Peter Pan (Bernstein), and Mother Abbess in The Sound of Music. She has also performed roles in Suor Angelica, Hansel and Gretel, A Little Night
Music, Into the Woods, and performed as a member of the Houston Grand Opera
Chorus for six seasons. Solo concert performances include Rutter’s Requiem, Karl
Jenkins’ The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace, Mozart’s Requiem, J. S. Bach’s Jauchzet
Gott in Allen Landen, and Saint Saëns’ Oratorio de Noël. Dr. Coberly has attended
programs at the Aspen Music Festival and School and at the American Institute of
Music in Graz.

Ted Cox is Principal Tubist with the Oklahoma City
Philharmonic, a position he has held since 1992. In
addition to performing with the Philharmonic, Mr. Cox
owns, operates, and teaches at Spirit House Yoga Center.
Mr. Cox is a graduate of Indiana University, where he was
a student and teaching assistant to the world renowned
soloist and teacher, Harvey Phillips. While attending
Indiana University, Mr. Cox was awarded the prestigious
Performers Certificate, the highest performance award
given by the music faculty. In 2009, Mr. Cox released his
first solo CD, Bach to Bix – Live. Mr. Cox has recently
published his first book, Warrior-Self – Unlocking the
Promise of the Bhagavad Gita.

Dr. Richard Demy is a musician and music educator
that has given over 40 recitals and numerous
masterclasses across 17 US states, and around the world.
He is published in the International Tuba Euphonium
Journal, and has won various national and international
solo contests. Always seeking his duty to find creative
ways to increase exposure of the Euphonium, he has
performed in rock bands, salsa bands, traditional
Peruvian ensembles, and electro-acoustical genres as
well as many orchestras, and concert bands. Currently
he is performing on the ophicleide, a keyed bass bugle,
as the predecessor to the euphonium to help dispel
myths about its sound.
After graduating from Louisiana State University, George Mason University, and
recently completing his DMA at The University of North Texas, He currently lives
in Dallas, TX with his wife. Constantly experimenting with new methods of music
education, he has a large private studio whose members routinely place in state,
national, and international contests.

Ken Drobnak most recently served as Director of Bands
& Low Brass at Northwestern Oklahoma State University
in Alva, Oklahoma. Previously, he taught at The
University of South Dakota and South Dakota School of
Mines & Technology. Drobnak has appeared as a judge
and clinician throughout the Central United States. He
has performed with the South Dakota Brass Quintet,
Billings Symphony, Greater Lansing Symphony and the
Helena Symphony. During the summer performance
season, he appears as a soloist with the Rapid City
Municipal Band in Rapid City, South Dakota. Drobnak
served as a Curatorial Assistant at the National Music
Museum in Vermillion, South Dakota for nearly two
years, where he researched brass instruments made by
Frank Holton & Company. Tuba-Euphonium Press has published many of his

Geoffrey Durbin is currently on faculty at Murray State
University where he teaches Trombone, Tuba, and
Euphonium and conducts the Tuba/Euphonium
Ensemble. Additionally, he is a Doctoral Candidate in
Euphonium Performance at the University of Memphis.
His most significant accolade was at the prestigious
Leonard Falcone Euphonium Competition at which he
won the first-place gold medal in 2013 and the silver
medal in 2010. He has also been selected as a semifinalist in the International Tuba and Euphonium
Association Euphonium Competition. In 2013, he won
the First Prize at the South Central Regional Tuba and
Euphonium Competition in the Euphonium Artist
division.
Mr. Durbin’s virtuosity, musicianship, and versatility has allowed him to enjoy
an active livelihood, in demand as a soloist, clinician, and freelance musician,
performing all over the United States. Recently, he has performed in Tennessee,
Pennsylvania, Indiana, Washington, Mississippi, Arkansas, Texas, Kentucky,
Georgia, and the District of Columbia, including solo performances at the 2014
United State Army Band Tuba and Euphonium Conference, and with the Louisiana
State University Wind Ensemble and the University of Memphis Symphony
Orchestra. His teaching and playing have been welcomed as part of summer
workshops including the Messiah College Conductor’s Symposium, the North
Texas Conductor’s Collegium, the North Texas Opera Workshop, and the Memphis
Music Camp. Additionally, he has been an active recording musician and his
playing can be heard on over twenty albums.
He has studied with Dr. Brian Bowman, Dr. John Mueller, Dr. Gary Bird, Dr. Jeff
Baker, Dr. Kyle Mullins, and Grant Moore III and has earned degrees from Indiana
University of Pennsylvania (Bachelor of Science in Music Education) and the

FivE is an exciting new quartet that pushes the
boundaries of low brass chamber music and
routinely shatters expectations of what is
possible on the euphonium. Formed in 2013,
FivE has attracted national attention for its
distinguished sound, popular YouTube videos,
and success with chamber music competitions.
The group won 1st Prize at the 2014
Pennsylvania Music Teachers National
Association Chamber Music Competition, and
finished as runner-up in the Eastern Division
competition. In 2013, FivE was selected internationally as one of twelve ensembles
to compete in the 40th Fischoff Chamber Music Competition, the largest of its kind
in the world. FivE is the only euphonium quartet ever to advance to the Fischoff
quarterfinals. The recent emergence of euphonium quartet as a serious performing
ensemble coincides with a need to add to the canon of original repertoire. As a
result, FivE composes, arranges, and adapts new music and old favorites that are
specifically tailored to the strengths of the ensemble. Members of the group have
achieved national recognition as composers by placing in the MTNA Young Artist
and Euphoniumcommisions.org composition contests.
The group has gained exposure with performances at the U.S. Army Band Tuba
Euphonium Workshop, the Northeast Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference, The
McCann School of Art, the Music at Penn’s Woods Summer Festival, and concerts
in Florida, Indiana, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. FivE also gainfully
dedicates time to music education by performing at public schools and music
camps. The quartet has performed at several schools along the east coast, and has
most recently served as quartet-in-residence at Music on the River Concert Band
Camp, a music camp held in central Virginia.
Individually, the members of FivE have excelled in prestigious solo competitions,
and the roster of their cumulative accolades includes the Leonard Falcone
International Euphonium and Tuba Festival, the MTNA Young Artist Solo
Competition, ITEC Young Artist Competition, and University Concerto
Competitions. The group has released singles on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, and
other popular media platforms, and the group plans to release its first full album in
2015. FivE is a performing ensemble with Buffet Group USA and plays exclusively
on Besson instruments.

The Frontier Brass Band was founded in
March 2014 by their soprano cornetist Ryan
Sharp whose foremost goal was to bring the
British brass band tradition to Oklahoma. FBB is
made up of the finest musicians from central
Oklahoma including brass faculty members
from eight regional universities. FBB is
committed to celebrating the unique British brass band genre and taking a leading
role in the community by raising arts awareness throughout Oklahoma. In their
first season, Frontier Brass Band presented four eclectic concerts performing
musical selections from opera, Broadway, movie soundtracks, and the symphony
orchestra as well as original works for brass band. The band is grateful to have
partnered with Edmond Santa Fe High School as their home for the 2014-2015
Concert Season. Frontier Brass band also looks forward to finishing the season with
performances at the Great Plains Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference and the
First Annual William Adam Trumpet Seminar in June.

Toby FurR, a native of Dallas, Texas, joined the U.S.
Army Ceremonial Band in 2013. Toby is a graduate of the
University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. At UNT, he
studied with Dr. Brian Bowman and performed with the
UNT Wind Symphony as well as several chamber
ensembles. Toby was the winner of the Leonard Falcone
International Euphonium Competition as a euphonium
student in 2010 and as a euphonium artist in 2011. In
addition to his duties with the army, Toby is an active
performer in the Washington, DC area.

Nathan Gay is currently Director of Athletic Bands at
Missouri Western State University. He is one of the new
young forces in euphonium performance and has won

Teacher’s National Association National Solo Brass

Gay recently completed his DMA in Euphonium
Performance from the University of Missouri - Kansas City Conservatory of Music
and Dance. He also performs with the Fountain City Brass Band, is an active soloist
and clinician, and is in high demand as a studio instructor. Gay has also taught in
the public school system and has a strong commitment to music education and
young students. He often performs and works with public school programs.

Charles W. Gianneli has played Tuba in the US Army Band since 2002. Prior
to joining the Army Band, Charles received a Masters Degree in Music from the
Manhattan School of Music, and a Bachelor of Music from the Curtis Institute of
Music. In addition to supporting missions in Arlington National Cemetary, Charles
is a member of The United States Army Tuba Quartet, as well as the Producer for
the Ceremonial Brass Quintet. Staying close to his roots, Charles returns to New
Jersey every year to play the Nutcracker with the American Ballet Theatre.

Matthew Gray is an aspiring musician/tubist who is
currently completing his Doctor of Musical Arts in Tuba
Performance from the University of Cincinnati CollegeConservatory of Music (CCM). He holds a Master of Music
Degree from CCM and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in
Music from Arkansas Tech University. His primary
teachers include Timothy Northcut, Jason Tacker, and
Andy Anders. Matthew is also an Adjunct Professor
of Tuba at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio and
freelances in the Greater Cincinnati region. Originally
from Little Rock, Arkansas, Matthew began playing the
trombone when he was twelve years old and switched
to tuba two years later. Some of his accomplishments
include winning the Principal Tuba position with
the Richmond Symphony Orchestra (Richmond, Indiana) in 2013, winning the
Principal Tuba position with the 2015 National Repertory Orchestra, and being a
finalist/semi-finalist in multiple professional auditions and competitions including
the ITEC Arnold Jacobs Mock Orchestra Competition, the Louisville Orchestra, and
“The President’s Own” United States Marine Band. He has also performed with the
West Virginia Symphony Orchestra, Blue Ash Montgomery Symphony Orchestra,
Cincinnati Ballet Orchestra, Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, and the South Bend
Symphony Orchestra. Apart from music, Matthew enjoys socializing, networking,
reading, exploring new places, and trying new things.

Jay Hunsberger
Tuba legend Harvey Phillips wrote “
is
one of America’s premiere orchestral tubists, an
experienced soloist and sensitive chamber music
performer.” Mr. Hunsberger is the principal tubist with
the Sarasota Orchestra and Professor of Tuba and
Euphonium at the University of South Florida in Tampa.
Following in Phillips’ footsteps, Jay has been a champion
of new music for the tuba and has had a substantial
number of new works written for and premiered by
him. During the 2014-15 season Jay will premiere David
Carlson’s Tuba Concerto and Jan Bach’s Acrobotics (for
Tuba and Cello). In the past few years he has premiered
William Brusick’s Fluencies (for Tuba, Horn, and Piano),
T.O. Sterrett’s Cast of the Works of Darkness, Gwyneth
Walker’s Beloved Bass, Francis Schwartz’s Don Quixote Dreams of Marta, and
James Grant’s Double Concerto. In May, 2010 Jay premiered William Brusick’s
Concerto No. 2 (for Tuba and Organ) in Tucson, Arizona and gave the premiere
of the same work scored for tuba and wind band in November, 2011. In 2003 he
gave the world premiere of Jan Bach’s Concerto for Tuba with Leif Bjaland and the
Sarasota Orchestra as well as the regional premiere of William Brusick’s Concerto
for Tuba and Wind Ensemble with the USF Wind Ensemble. Other significant
premiers include Celestial Keys by Gwyneth Walker, Jan Bach’s Oompah Suite
(with James Wilson, horn), Francis Scwartz’s Grey Road, and Dick Hyman’s
Requiem for Pee Wee Erwin.
With James Wilson he has performed across the US at major conservatories and
schools of music. Their first recording, Oompah Suite: Sweets for Horn and Tuba
(including works by Bach, Bassler, Wilder, Madsen, and Kellaway) was released
in February 2011 on the Summit label. One critic wrote: “...the trio’s musicianship
is quite evident with a flawless execution of the music” (ITEA Journal, August
2011). In June 2012 the CD was awarded the Roger Bobo Award for Excellence in
Recording by the International Tuba and Euphonium Association.

Technical Sergeant Brandon Jones is a
euphoniumist with The United States Air Force Band
Ceremonial Brass, Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling,
Washington, D.C. Sergeant Jones received a Bachelor of
Arts in Music from Wester Kentucky University. While
there, he received numerous honors and accolades,
including being the featured soloist on the WKU Wind
Ensemble tour throughout Russia. Prior to joining the Air
Force, Sergeant Jones was a music teacher throughout
Kentucky and middle Tennessee, working with various
band programs, teaching several private brass students,
and was the brass director at Oakland High School in
Murfreesboro, TN. Sergeant Jones has been a featured
performer and clinician at numerous state conferences,
music festivals, educational camps, universities, and high schools, performing with
some of the top notch ensembles in the country. He has worked with some of the
top high school band programs in the nation, including the Lassiter High School
Band in Marietta. GA. Sergeant Jones was the principal and solo euphonium with
the Southern Stars Symphonic Brass Band, a British-style professional brass band,
based out of Crossville, TN for five years where he performed over 20 times as a
featured soloist, including a performance at the Great American Brass Band Festival
in Danville, KY. He has also performed with the famed Brass Band of Battle Creek in
the Cayman Islands. Sergeant Jones released his first solo CD entitled “Influences”
in December of 2009 and received international acclaim as well as being a finalist
for the Roger Bobo Award for recording excellence with the International Tuba
Euphonium Association. Some career highlights since joining the United States
Air Force Band are a performance in New York City for NBC’s The Today Show, the
Holiday Flash Mob at the Udvar·Hazy Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, and a
performance at the 2014 Kennedy Center Honors for Tom Hanks and the President
of the United States.

Stephen Kunzer currently resides in Stillwater,
Oklahoma where he is professor of tuba and euphonium
at Oklahoma State University. Stephen received his
Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Arizona
with emphasis in both Tuba Performance and Music
Education. His Master of Music degree is from the
University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music
(CCM), where he served as graduate assistant.
Stephen regularly performs in various venues along
the Las Vegas Strip, having performed with countless
headliners including - Jennifer Hudson, Carole King,
Joshua Bell, Emmylou Harris, Martina McBride, John
Fogerty, Arturo Sandoval, and Willie Nelson. He has
performed in numerous Broadway shows including Disney’s The Lion King and
Mary Poppins, Thoroughly Modern Millie, and The Rat Pack Is Back, and has toured
extensively with the Dallas Brass Quintet.
Stephen is in high-demand as a solo artist, clinician, and lecturer. His
performances have been heard coast-to-coast in the United States, Thailand,
and Korea, and he is a regular presenter at Regional and International Music
Conferences. Stephen has previously served on faculty at the University of Nevada,
Las Vegas and is a contributing writer for the International Tuba and Euphonium
Association Journal.

Dr. Andy Larson is currently Full-Time Instructor of
Low Brass at Southern University in Baton Rouge,
Louisiana. Additionally, he teaches low brass lessons at
East Ascension High School in Gonzales, Louisiana. Prior
to teaching at Southern and LSU, Andy taught at
Southeastern Louisiana University, the University of
Akron, and Louisiana State University. Dr. Larson’s
former students have won regional, national, and
international competitions, entered and graduated from
graduate school, entered the U.S. Military Band system at
various levels, opened their own businesses, entered
successful careers as middle and high school band
directors, and become successful freelance musicians.
As a fan of travel, Andy maintains an active schedule as a
clinician and performer. He has performed with the Festival City Symphony (WI),
the Lake Charles Symphony Pops (LA), and the Cleveland Symphonic Winds (OH).
Andy has been a featured performer at many regional, national, and international
conferences including the 2012 and 2014 US Army Band Tuba Euphonium
Workshop (Arlington, VA), 2012 International Tuba Euphonium Conference (Linz,
Austria), 2013 South Central Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference (Baton Rouge,
LA), and the 2014 International Tuba Euphonium Conference (Bloomington, IN).
He will be a featured performer at both SERTEC and GPRTEC 2015. Andy is
immensely interested in experimental and avant-garde music and art. He is
currently working on multiple pedagogical resources aimed at making
contemporary performance techniques more accessible to young musicians. He
has become increasingly interested in creating inclusive experiential atmospheres
in his live performances. Andy lives in Baton Rouge and rides a lot of bicycle, time

Jeremy Lewis teaches applied lessons to all tuba and
euphonium majors at West Texas A&M University,
performs as tubist with the WT Faculty Brass Quintet,
leads the WTAMU Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble, coaches
small ensembles and teaches weekly tuba-euphonium
studio classes. He has taught Brass Methods,
Instrumental Technique and Elementary Music Theory.
Dr. Lewis is also principal tubist with the Amarillo
Symphony Orchestra.
Before WT, Jeremy worked as a private teacher and
clinician in North Texas. He earned degrees from Texas
Christian University, Indiana University and Texas
Tech University. Jeremy has performed with ensembles
such as the Lafayette Philharmonic and the East Texas Symphony Orchestras.
Additionally, Jeremy was a member of the Civic and Quintessence Brass Quintets.
Jeremy has been successful as a soloist making appearances at venues throughout
the world. He has performed during the 2014 International Tuba-Euphonium
Conference in Bloomington, IN, Regional Tuba-Euphonium Conferences in
Flagstaff, Baton Rouge, Kearney and Waco as well as the 2010 Army Band TubaEuphonium Conference as well as recent guest artist appearances in Florida,

As a competitor, Jeremy placed second in the 2006 International Women’s Brass

Kimberly Goddard Loeffert is the baritone
saxophonist for the critically-acclaimed h2 quartet. A
dynamic and innovative chamber ensemble, h2

expressive capacity of their instrument by programming
traditional, avant-garde, minimalist, and jazz-influenced
works in surprising and compelling ways.
Loeffert has performed at prestigious venues throughout
the United States and in Europe, the UK, and Asia,
including the Cankar Dom (Slovenia), the Guarnerius
Center for the Performing Arts (Serbia), Merkin Hall
(New York City), the National Concert Hall (Ireland), the
Sarajevo Music Academy (Bosnia), the Siam Paragon (Thailand), the University of
St. Andrews (Scotland), and the Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles), in addition
to university recital halls across the country.
An advocate for new music, Loeffert has commissioned and/or premiered works

An active chamber musician, Loeffert has won numerous chamber music prizes as
a member of the h2 quartet, including First Place at the Fischoff National Chamber

available discs and a nationally-syndicated PBS television episode of Backstage
Pass.
Loeffert is on faculty at Oklahoma State University (OSU). Prior to her appointment
at OSU, she taught music theory, saxophone, and chamber music at Michigan State
University, and music theory and aural skills at Florida State University where she
is a PhD Candidate in Music Theory. Loeffert earned a DMA and MM in Saxophone
Performance, as well as an MM in Music Theory Pedagogy from Michigan State
University. She holds a BM in Saxophone Performance and Jazz Studies from
Northwestern University. Her primary saxophone teachers have included Joe

Philip Martinson was appointed Second Trombone of
the Oklahoma City Philharmonic in 2014. He is currently
Interim Instructor of Trombone at Southwestern
Oklahoma State University, Instructor of Music at Saint
Leo University COL, and an Alumni Fellow at the
University of Oklahoma pursuing a Doctor of Musical
Arts degree under the tutelage of Dr. Irvin Wagner. He
graduated with a Master of Music degree in Trombone
Performance from Indiana University, Jacobs School of
Music, where he served as Associate Instructor for the
trombone department and received a Bachelor of Music
degree with Honors in Brass Performance from the
University of Akron, graduating summa cum laude.

composer), Philip actively performs as a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician
throughout the United States. Recent engagements include performances at the
International Trombone Festival (Austin, TX), Skidmore College, Oklahoma Baptist
University, University of Akron and Malone University. Prior to joining the OKC
Philharmonic, Martinson held the position of Second Trombone with the Ocala
Symphony Orchestra (FL) for three seasons. Additionally, during summers he is
Co-Principal Trombone of the Taneycomo Festival Orchestra in Branson, Missouri.
Philip has performed with professional ensembles in Ohio, Indiana, and Florida
including the Canton Symphony Orchestra, the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic,

As a chamber artist, he is co-founder of Ensemble Inversion, a contemporary duo

SSG Jeremy McBride,
In 2013,
a native of San Antonio,
Texas, fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming a member
of The U.S. Army Ceremonial Band.
Prior to joining “Pershing’s Own,” SSG McBride was an
active freelance musician in the Dallas/Fort Worth area
and a highly sought after private euphonium instructor.
At any given time, his private studio held 70 talented
middle school and high school euphonium students.
As an ensemble performer, SSG McBride performed
regularly with notable organizations such as the Dallas
Wind Symphony, the Lone Star Wind Orchestra, The
Imperial Brass, the Texas Star Brass Band, and the Dallas
Civic Wind Ensemble.
Throughout his musical career, SSG McBride has successfully competed in
numerous major euphonium competitions. In 2005, he took first place in the
Euphonium Artist Division of the International Leonard Falcone Euphonium
Competition in Twin Lake, Michigan.

Albert and Sarah Miller have been playing
euphonium together for the past five years. They met at
the University of Arkansas while both were doing their
master’s degrees. During the course of their relationship
they began to commission several composers to write
new works for euphonium duet and piano. Both
maintain active careers as soloists and teachers and
enjoy teaching to students of any level. They got married
in 2013 and currently live in Lawrence, Kansas while
Sarah is completing her DMA at the University of Kansas.
Sarah directs the KU Women’s Basketball Band and
assists with the KU Marching Jayhawks. Albert teaches
Jazz and Low Brass at Kansas Wesleyan University.

Kevin Miller started his musical life in Owasso, OK.
playing trombone at 10 years of age an eventually
moving up to tuba at age 11. Under the tutelage of
directors Harlon and Willeta Lamkin, Kevin excelled on
tuba and decided on a life in music at an early age. Kevin
went on to study with Gerald Sloan while attending the
University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. While in Arkansas
Kevin became an active freelance player performing with
The North Arkansas Symphony, Arkansas Symphony,
Arkansas Winds, and Solid Brass (now known as Natural
State Brass)
In 2000 Kevin moved to the Dallas Metroplex to work as a
private teacher and maintained a studio of 60+ students.
While in Dallas, Kevin continued as an active freelance player and filled in regularly
as a sub for The Dallas Wind Symphony and Dallas Wind Symphony Tuba Quartet.
In 2010 Kevin moved back to the Tulsa area where he has built a studio of 40+
students encompassing students from the Broken Arrow, Jenks, Owasso, and
Union school districts. Kevin also plays with Bravo Brass Quintet, Tulsa Symphony
Brass Quintet, and is principal tuba with the Tulsa Opera Orchestra.

Dr. Matthew Mireles is highly active as a conductor,
performer, and educator, with his performances
achieving high praise, and his students having success
in major competitions. Dr. Mireles continues to be in
demand as a clinician, guest conductor, soloist, and
adjudicator throughout the United States and abroad,
and continues to champion and arrange new music for
wind ensemble and low brass.
As a euphonium soloist, Dr. Mireles released a solo
album titled “Prometheus,” on the Potenza Music record
label, which includes previously unrecorded works of
John Stevens. Dr. Mireles was the winner of the 2008
Leonard Falcone International Euphonium Competition,
the 2007 Mid-Texas Symphony Young Artist Competition, the 2007 University of
Alabama Concerto-Aria Competition, and the 2008 International Tuba Euphonium
Conference Chamber Music Competition. Also an active chamber musician, Dr.
Mireles plays euphonium with the Boreas Quartet. Their album, “The Serpent’s
Kiss,” is also released on the Potenza Music record label, and is a set of new
transcriptions for tuba-euphonium quartet.
Currently, Dr. Matthew Mireles is the Director of Bands and Low Brass at
Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma where he conducts the Concert Band,
Brass Ensemble, and Pep Band. Before joining the faculty at Cameron, Dr. Mireles
conducted both the University Band and Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble at the
University of Wisconsin-Madison while also teaching undergraduate euphonium.
He is also on faculty at the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Twin Lake, MI, where he
teaches low brass and conducting.
Dr. Mireles earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of
Wisconsin-Madison, a Master of Music degree from the University of Alabama,
and a Bachelor of Arts Degree with Teacher Certification from St. Mary’s University
in San Antonio, TX. His major teachers have been John Stevens, Dr. Demondrae
Thurman, Lee Hipp, Scott Teeple, and Mark Hetzler.

Mr. Paul Nesper is currently the Instructor of Tuba and
Euphonium at The University of Central Oklahoma, as
well at the Instructor of Low Brass and Director of the
Brass Ensemble at East Central Oklahoma University.
Paul has previously taught at Oklahoma Baptist
University. He also spent 2 years teaching, recruiting,
and traveling with The Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps,
a member of Drum Corps International, and is currently
working with the Seattle Cascades. Paul has performed
with the Santa Fe Concert Association, Enid, Tulsa,
Norman Philharmonic, and New Mexico Symphony
Orchestras. In addition to his orchestral playing, he also
plays tuba in the Boulevard Brass Quintet. Mr. Nesper
earned his BM from Illinois Wesleyan University, and his

Mark norman is currently the Associate Director of
Bands for the Peck School of the Arts at the University of
Wisconsin – Milwaukee. He is also the owner of the
Charlotte (NC) Music School and performs with the
Washington Brass and the American Music Ensemble.
Mark has served on the faculties as either the Director
or Associate Director of Bands at the University of
Michigan, Washburn University, University of North
Carolina School of the Arts and Towson University.
He is a past tuba performer with the U.S. Navy Band in
Washington, DC, Fountain City Brass Band, Tubas in
the Sun Quartet, and the Georgetown, Mt. Vernon and
Loudoun Symphonies. He has been a frequent substitute
and extra performer with the North Carolina, Richmond,
Greensboro and Topeka Symphony Orchestras.
As a soloist and clinician, Mark has performed and presented at national
and regional conferences such as the U.S. Army Band Tuba and Euphonium
Conference and eleven state music educator workshops. He has been a featured
soloist with bands and orchestras throughout the U.S. and has presented recitals at
several universities.

North Texas
Euphonium Quartet has emerged as the
leader among a formidable new crop of
euphonium quartets from all across the globe.
The group is comprised of doctoral candidates
currently studying with Dr. Brian Bowman at
the University of North Texas, and is the only
quartet whose members have all been finalists
in the world renowned Leonard Falcone
International Euphonium Competition. The
quartet has become one of the most active young chamber ensembles in the
country through performances at numerous universities and music conferences
throughout the United States, the commissioning and performing of works written
specifically for the ensemble, and educational outreach with younger euphonium
players.
As individuals, each member of the ensemble strives to make music at the highest
level, which has led to numerous opportunities to compete and/or perform in
both national and international competitions, conferences, and auditions. Recent
competitions in which members of the quartet have been finalists or winners
include: The Leonard Falcone International Euphonium Competition, the ITEC
(International Tuba/Euphonium Conference) solo, mock band, and quartet
competitions, the United States Army Band National Collegiate Solo Competition,
The U.S. Army Band Mock Euphonium Audition, solo competitions at the South
Central, Great Plains, Northeast, and Midwest Tuba/Euphonium Conferences, and
in auditions for the United States Navy Band, the United States Naval Academy
Band, and the United States Marine Band.
Unmatched in quality, the group is dedicated to the advancement of the chamber
medium of the euphonium quartet as well as to the continued advancement of the
euphonium itself, and is excited to offer composers the unique opportunity to write
for an ensemble who’s repertoire is just now being formed.

Jesse Orth is honored to return to his Midwestern roots
with his recent appointment as instructor of tuba and
euphonium at the University of Northern Iowa, where he
teaches applied tuba and euphonium lessons, directs the
UNITUBA ensemble, and coaches chamber music
ensembles. He recently moved from Texas, where he is
an ABD doctoral candidate in Tuba performance at the
University of North Texas. In the past year, Mr. Orth has
competed as a semifinalist in the 2014 Leonard Falcone
Festival tuba solo artist competition and was named a
Toulouse Graduate School Thesis and Dissertation
Fellow.
Mr. Orth has performed and taught across the country
as well as abroad in Germany, Hungary, England, Ireland, Brazil, and Ghana. He
has most recently performed at the 2014 ITEC and the 2013 South Central Regional
ITEA Conference with the Fat Bottomed Brass Tuba Euphonium Quartet. In 2015,
he has solo performances scheduled at both the Midwest and Great Plains regional
tuba euphonium conferences. In 2011, Mr. Orth served as a guest artist and faculty
member at the 2nd International Festival of Classical music in Piracicaba, Brazil
with the UNT Center Brass Quintet, now the Impact Brass Quintet. Mr. Orth has
previously held performance positions with the Lone Star Wind Orchestra, Dallas
Civic Wind ensemble, the Metropolitan winds of Dallas, and the Chippewa Valley
Symphony. In the Lone Star Wind Orchestra and the University of North Texas
Wind Symphony, under the direction of Eugene Corporon, Mr. Orth performed and
recorded as principal tubist on multiple projects including the educational series,
“Teaching Music through Performance in Band.”
In addition to performing actively on the tuba, Mr. Orth has been a significant
contributor to multiple repertoire projects initiated by the International Tuba and
Euphonium Association. In 2007, he assisted internationally renowned jazz artist
Jon Sass on the Bassblowaz Club, part of the Creative Impulse series. Mr. Orth has
earned degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (BA - music) and the
University of North Texas (MM).

Matt Owen is an American Composer, Brass Arranger,
and Brass+Electronics innovator residing in Nashville,
Tennessee. Matt began his tuba career in Rockmart,
Georgia with The Roman Festival Brass Band, The 8th
Regiment Civil War Band, Spirit of Atlanta Drum and
Bugle Corps, and several more ensembles before leaving
the area to attend Jacksonville State University. In 2007,
Matt completed the Armed Forces School of Music in
Little Creek, Virginia as an Army Bandsman and
performed with The 151st Army Band out of
Montgomery, Alabama from 2007-2009. Now, Matt tours
the United States year-round with his group “The Eclectic
Tuba” who have recently hosted highly-acclaimed
legendary guest artists on their recordings such as Junior
Marvin (Lead Guitarist for Bob Marley and The Wailers), Wayne Coyne (The
Flaming Lips), Amanda Palmer, Kliph Scurlock (frm. The Flaming Lips), Carl Harvey
(Toots and The Maytals), Joe Murphy (Legendary Jazz Tubist), Marcus Rezak
(Digital Tape Machine), and many more. The group is exploding the tiny envelope
that is tuba performance with brand new technological techniques, wild, and
sometimes risqué, show antics, high energy dance music, and a perfectly synced
light show that takes audiences on an hour long thrill-ride.

Dr. Ryan Robinson joined the faculty of the Wanda L.
Bass School of Music in 2011. He is currently the tubist of
the Oklahoma City University Faculty Brass Quintet and
Principal Tuba of the Lawton Philharmonic. He
previously held teaching positions at the University of
North Texas, Tarleton State University, and Southwestern
Oklahoma State University. His degrees are from the
University of North Texas (BM, DMA) and Northwestern
University (MM).
Dr. Robinson has been invited to perform at several
international competitions and festivals including
the Brass im Frankenwald course and festival at Haus
Marteau, Lichtenberg, Germany; Ticino Musica Festival
in Lugano, Switzerland; the Leonard Falcone International Euphonium and Tuba
Festival; the Rafael Mendez Brass Institute; and the Arnold Jacobs Mock Orchestra
Audition at the International Tuba Euphonium Conference.
As a chamber musician, Dr. Robinson performs regularly with the OCU faculty
brass quintet. He is a founding member of the Founders Tuba Euphonium Quartet,
Frontier Brass Band (OK), Bel Canto Brass Quintet, the Highland Brass Quintet, and
the Fantasticos Tuba Euphonium Quartet. He has performed with the University of
North Texas faculty brass quintet, the Dallas Opera Brass Quintet, and the Tarleton
State University faculty brass quintet. Additionally, he has performed with the
Houston Symphony, Oklahoma City Philharmonic, Lawton Philharmonic, Las
Colinas Symphony (TX), Allen Philharmonic (TX), and the Blue Lake Festival Band
(MI).
In addition to his position at OCU, Dr. Robinson is currently on the faculty of Blue
Lake Fine Arts Camp in Twin Lake, MI and holds the position of Lead Teaching
Artist for the brass and percussion areas at el Sistema Oklahoma. His professional
affiliations include the International Tuba Euphonium Association, Texas Music

Raúl I. Rodríguez

Appointed in 1995,
is Associate
Professor of Music at Texas State University teaching
applied tuba and euphonium and working with chamber
music ensembles. Since 2001 he has performed as
principal tuba with the Breckenridge Music Festival
Orchestra in Colorado. His performance credits are quite
diverse ranging from the symphony and pop orchestras
to brass quintet, presenting solo recitals and jazz. Prior
performance credits include serving as principal tuba
with the Garland/Las Colinas Symphony Orchestra,
SouthWest BrassWorks, Victoria Bach Festival Orchestra
and TubaTzars. As director of the Texas State Tuba
Euphonium Ensemble he has been instrumental in
premiering new works, showcasing hidden gems and
presenting standard works at various conferences including the 2005 Great Plains
Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference, the 2006 International Tuba Euphonium
Conference, the 2006 Texas Music Educators Association Convention, the 2007
South Central Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference, the 2008 International Tuba
Euphonium Conference, the 2011 South Central Tuba Euphonium Conference, and
the 2014 Texas Music Educators Association Convention and 2014 International
Tuba Euphonium Conference. He still continues his involvement in youth
education by dedicating time to presenting clinics and master classes in the public
schools. In the summer of 2002 Mr. Rodríguez was appointed principal tuba of the
Texas Philharmonic to record the soundtrack for the musical score Spy Kids 2: The
Island of Lost Dreams.

Dr. Scott Roeder is Associate Professor of Tuba and
Euphonium at the University of Texas-Pan American
where he teaches applied tuba/euphonium and conducts
the UTPA Brass Ensemble and UTPA Tuba/Euphonium
Ensemble. Previously Dr. Roeder served as Principal
Tubist with the Midland-Odessa Symphony, Lone Star
Brass Quintet, and the Texas Music Festival. Currently he

Orchestra and performs with the UTPA Faculty Brass
Quintet. Additional orchestral performances include the

As a soloist Dr. Roeder has performed recitals at universities around the country
and has been an invited performer at multiple ITEA Regional Tuba Euphonium
Conferences as well as a guest artist at the 2012 and 2014 International Tuba
Euphonium Conferences in Linz, Austria and Indiana University. Additionally he
has been a featured soloist with the Midland-Odessa Symphony, Valley Symphony
Orchestra, University of Akron Symphony, Odessa College Band, and the UTPA
Wind Ensemble and UTPA String Orchestra. Dr. Roeder has been a prize winner

Noel Seals
Bass Trombonist
was born in Tulsa,
Oklahoma, where he graduated from Booker T.
Washington High School. He studied music performance
at Northeastern State University and Oklahoma State
University, where he studied with Jeff Bright and Paul
Compton.
While attending Oklahoma State University he has won
their Concerto Competition and performed a concerto
by Ernest Sachse. In addition he has won the top prize
of the Crescendo Music Awards held in Tulsa, Oklahoma
performing Alexander Lebedev’s Konzertante Allegro.
Also competing in the several competitions held by the
International Trombone Association he was a finalist in
the Edward Kleinhammer Orchestra Bass Trombone Excerpt and Donald Yaxley
Solo competitions.
As a chamber musician, Noel has won the Eastern Trombone Workshop Trombone
Quartet Competition, International Trombone Association Trombone Quartet
Competition, Courtois/Fort Worth Trombone Summit Trombone Quartet
Competition, Emory Remington Trombone Ensemble Competition, and the Down
Beat Student Music Award for Best Collegiate Classical Ensemble. He’s traveled
with one of two collegiate American brass quintets to perform at the Rekkenze
Brass festival held annually in Lichtenburg, Germany. 2013 he traveled to Japan to
perform as Principal Bassoon with the Oklahoma State University Wind Ensemble
at their Yamaha Band Clinic.
Noel has also arranged several works for trombone ensembles and has had a few
performed nationally with professional groups. One being an arrangement of
Frank Ticheli’s “An American Elegy.” Originally for a concert band ensemble it
was rearranged for 8 trombones and performed by the Washington Trombone
Ensemble in March of 2014 led by Chris Branagan. Another was an original
work entitled “Paul Compton’s Visit to Vatican City”, a 15 minute work also for 8
trombones.
Since October of 2014 he holds the position of Bass Trombonist of the Oklahoma
City Philharmonic.

Texas A&M University-Commerce
The
Tuba/Euphonium studio is excited to perform
at the 2015 GPRTEC. The 20-piece ensemble is
almost entirely undergraduate music education
majors from the North and East Texas regions.
The Euphonium Choir rehearses and performs
regularly and has been student-led for the
majority of its existence. With the assistance of
some of the more senior members, there are a
variety of smaller quartets that rehearse
regularly and perform at studio events. The tuba/euphonium studio is passionate
about their craft and as a family, we pride ourselves on being one of the strongest
and largest studios at Texas A&M University-Commerce. We have an outstanding
record of job placement for our music education majors, and many of our students
looking to pursue graduate performance degrees have been awarded a variety of
assistantships. Some of our alums include Jason Wallace (Dallas Wind Symphony),
Tim Buzbee (Melbourne Symphony), Derrell Wallace (graduate assistant at OCU),
Dorian Scott (graduate assistant at U. of Arkansas), and most recently, Kyle

Matt Tropman currently serves as Tuba/Euphonium
instructor at the University of Arizona and is an active
freelancer, soloist and chamber musician. His
performances have been praised in numerous
publications such as the New York Times, which stated
“Tropman makes a serious case for the euphonium as a
solo instrument.” An active clinician and recitalist on
both the euphonium and tuba, Matt has performed and
taught throughout the U.S. and Europe. He recently
published a euphonium method book and has numerous
other pedagogy projects in development.
Matt’s two commercially released CD’s; Continuum and
From the Balcony (Summit Records), have been featured
on programs such as NPR’s “All Things Considered”, CBC Radio’s “Disc Drive”,
and “Music and Company”. He has performed with numerous bands, orchestras
and chamber groups including the San Francisco Symphony and the Detroit
Symphony. In his early career as a member of the U.S. Marine Band (President’s
Own), he frequently performed as a soloist throughout the U.S. on the band’s
National concert tours.
Dr. Tropman received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in euphonium
performance from the University of Michigan and Arizona State University,
respectively, and the Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in tuba performance from the
University of Michigan.

United States Army Band Ceremonial
Tuba Euphonium Quartet is made up of
The
members primarily in the United States Army
Ceremonial Band. The quartet uses the unique
instrumentation of three euphoniums and one
tuba instead of the traditional two tubas and
two euphoniums quartet. The quartet performs
regularly on the “Pershing’s Own” Chamber
series and other chamber concerts throughout
the D.C. and Northern Virginia area. The
quartet especially enjoys educational outreach concerts and performs at middle
schools, high schools, and universities whenever they can.
While the Ceremonial Band’s primary mission is to support over 2,000 military
funerals each year in Arlington National Cemetery, the band performs other
missions of national and international importance including wreath laying
ceremonies by heads of state and other foreign dignitaries at the Tomb of the
Unknown Soldier, monthly retirement parades, special reviews, and arrival and
departure honors for foreign dignitaries at the White House and Pentagon.
The 70 musicians of The U.S. Army Ceremonial Band come from some of the most
prestigious music conservatories and universities in the country. Beyond their
ceremonial roles, members of The U.S. Army Ceremonial Band routinely display
their versatility and superb musicianship while performing with other elements of
The U.S. Army Band, in chamber group performances, on recital programs, and as
soloists for summer concerts.

Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble was founded in
2009 under the direction of Dr. Scott Roeder.
Since its creation, the ensemble has quickly
gained national and international acclaim. In
2012 the UTPA Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble
performed at the International Tuba
Euphonium Conference and Brass Festival Linz
in Linz, Austria as one of only a handful of
tuba-euphonium ensembles from the United
States to be invited to perform. The ensemble
has also performed at the 2014 International Tuba Euphonium Conference at
Indiana University, 2011 ITEA South Central Tuba Euphonium Conferences at
Baylor University, the 2013 and 2015 Texas Music Education Association
Conference, the 2013 ITEA South Central Regional Conference at Louisiana State
University and the 2013 ITEA Midwest Regional Conference at Illinois State
University. Additionally the ensemble performs regular concerts at UTPA and
outreach concerts for the surrounding public school music programs. Current and
former members of the ensemble have advanced or placed in numerous national
and international competitions and perform in professional music ensembles
across South Texas.
As advocates of new music, The UTPA Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble has premiered
original works and arrangements for tuba euphonium ensemble. In additional the
ensemble and studio has hosted numerous Guest Artists such as Fritz Kaenzig, Matt
Tropman, Jerry Young, Lauren Veronie, Demondrae Thurman, Patrick Sheridan,
Roland Szentpali, Ben Pierce, and Jason Ham.

Kevin Wass, Associate Professor of Tuba and
Euphonium at Texas Tech University, holds the Doctor of
Musical Arts degree from the University of Michigan, the
Bachelor of Science degree (Summa cum laude) in Music
Education from Dana College in Blair, Nebraska, and the
Master of Music degree and Performer’s Certificate from
Indiana University. He has performed with a wide range
of ensembles, including the Disneyland All-American
College Band, the Music Academy of the West Festival
Orchestra, the Omaha, Lincoln, and Honolulu Symphony
Orchestras, Santa Fe Pro Musica and various brass
chamber groups. Solo appearances have included
competitions in the United States, Canada, and the Czech
Republic, and recitals and concerto appearances at
colleges, universities, and regional and international tuba-euphonium
conferences. His teaching experience is equally varied, with experience as a band
and orchestra director at the elementary and high school levels in addition to
private studio and classroom teaching at the college level. In addition to his duties
at Tech, Dr. Wass has served on the faculty of the Las Vegas Music Festival and
currently serves as Principal Tubist of the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra. His
principal studies have been with Fritz Kaenzig, Daniel Perantoni, Harvey Phillips,
and Craig Fuller. A long-time member of the International Tuba-Euphonium
Association (ITEA), Dr. Wass has served on the Board of Directors of the
organization as Conferences Coordinator and was Founding Chair of the ITEA
Harvey G. Phillips Awards for Excellence in Composition.
Students of Kevin Wass can be found in teaching and performing positions
throughout the United States, including Principal Tuba in the Lyric Opera of
Chicago Orchestra and Euphonium in the United States Air Force Band of the
Golden West. Graduates from the tuba and euphonium studio at Texas Tech have
also been admitted to graduate study at some of the world’s most prestigious
institutions, including the Juilliard School, Indiana University, the University of
North Texas, and the Royal Northern College of Music (UK). Competition honors
for Dr. Wass’s students include first place in the ITEC Mock Orchestral Audition and
two national finalists in the MTNA Young Artist Brass competition.

MUCS Jarrod Williams has been playing professionally
in the Baltimore/Washington area for nearly twenty
years. He earned Bachelor and Master of Music degrees
from the University of Kansas, and a Doctor of Musical
Arts in tuba performance from the University of
Maryland in 2012. His teachers include Robert Loffler, Bill
Hartman, Scott Watson, Max Bonecutter, Toby Hanks and
David Fedderly.
In addition to his military performance schedule with
The United States Naval Academy Band, he enjoys
performing with the Brass of the Potomac, Bayfield
Brass Quintet, coaching local middle and high school
brass sections, and teaching tuba and euphonium at
Anne Arundel Community College. He has also played with regional orchestras
in Kansas, Missouri, and Maryland, served as chairman of International Tuba and
Euphonium Conference Competition Committees in 1998 and 2010, respectively,
and performed in such diverse environments as Blues Alley and the Delmarva
Chicken Festival.
MUCS Williams auditioned and was selected for assignment with the Naval
Academy Band in 1996. Following recruit training at RTC, Great Lakes, he reported
for duty as tubist with the concert, marching, and ceremonial units. He was
named Principal Tubist in 1998 and is currently the band’s training officer and
awards writer. An accomplished arranger, MUCS Williams’ transcriptions have
been performed by the Naval Academy Band’s tuba quartet, brass quintet, brass
ensemble, and ceremonial bands, as well as the Washington Symphonic Brass and
Symphonia, a professional tuba ensemble.

Matthew Wilshire is currently a second year Doctoral
student at the University of Illinois where he studies with
Professor Mark Moore. Matthew holds degrees the

Blackwelder Brass. Matthew has also performed with the
American Wind Symphony Orchestra, the ChampaignUrbana Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonia da Camera,
and the Illinois Modern Ensemble. This past summer
Matthew was invited to compete in the Arnold Jacobs
Mock Orchestra Audition at the International Tuba
Euphonium Conference.
Originally from Mansfield Texas, Matthew began his study of tuba at age 11.
His primary teachers are Mark Moore, Dr. Ryan Robinson, and Donald C. Little.
Matthew is a member of ITEA and Mu Phi Epsilon.

Ms. Pi-Ju Chiang has been serving at Oklahoma State
University since 2013. As an active recital pianist and
collaborative artist, Pi-Ju Chiang appears frequently in
solo, chamber, and collaborative recitals in Taiwan, North
America, Mexico and Europe. Her experience as a
collaborative pianist has taken her to the Bari Opera
Theater in Italy where she performed two operas in 1997
- La Bohème and Il Travatore. She was awarded the Rosa
Lobe Memorial Award in Accompanying at the Cleveland
Institute of Music (CIM) in 2005, recognizing her highest
level of artistic achievements while attending CIM as a
student, and was serving as a CIM collaborative faculty
member immediately after having graduated in 2005
until 2012. Ms. Chiang’s performances have been
frequently heard on air on WCLV 104.9, northeast Ohio’s classical radio station. Her
recordings can be found on the website instantencore.com, which has links to the
world’s top artists and ensembles. Ms. Chiang received her Bachelor’s Degree in
Piano Performance from Taipei National University of Arts. She received her first
Master’s Degree in Piano Performance at The University of Texas at Austin, then
received her second Master’s Degree in Piano Chamber Music and Accompanying
at Rice University. She received her Professional Studies Diploma in Collaborative
Piano from the Cleveland Institute of Music.

Charles Koslowske brings more than a decade of vocal coaching and
collaborative piano experience to his new appointment at Oklahoma City
University. He made his New York debut in 2002 at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital
Hall, and has been an official with the Metropolitan Opera National Council
Auditions each year since 2001. He was the official accompanist of the Denver
Lyric Opera Guild and the All-Colorado Opera Audition, and served as staff pianist
at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music in Salzburg. He has taught at
University of Colorado and Colorado State University, specializing in graduate and
advanced undergraduate singers. Most recently, he was lead coach for scenes and
singers in Colorado State’s production of The Rape of Lucretia and Verdi’s Falstaff.
Music theater credits include music director for works from Cats to Cabaret.
Koslowske has earned three degrees from University of Colorado-Boulder: Master
of Music degrees in collaborative piano and in vocal performance and pedagogy,
and Bachelor of Music in vocal performance. He has participated in vocal master
classes with William Bolcom and Joan Morris, Helen Donath, Shirlee Emmons,
Thomas Hampson, Marilyn Horne, Martin Isepp, Martin Katz, Marlena Malas,
Ashley Putnam, Diana Soviero, and Frederica von Stade.

Jan McDaniel is equally at home on the podium and at
the keyboard. He is currently beginning his ninth year as
a professor of vocal coaching at Oklahoma City
University and a conductor of the Oklahoma City
University Opera and Musical Theater Company, where
he has served as musical director for the world premiere
of Night of the Comets, along with productions such as
Puccini’s La rondine and Suor Angelica, Donizetti’s
L’elisir d’amore, Nicolai’s Die lustigen Weiber von
Windsor, Floyd’s Susannah, Flaherty and Ahren’s
Seussical, and Gershwin’s Of Thee I Sing. McDaniel also
served for ten years as director of accompanying and
orchestral activities at Stephen F. Austin State University
in Nacogdoches, Texas.
His appearances as a collaborative pianist include concerts and recitals from
Germany to Japan, and he was featured as harpsichord soloist in the world
premiere of Der Turmbau zu Babel with the Northwest German Philharmonic
Orchestra.
In 1982, Mr. McDaniel accepted a position as assistant conductor and vocal coach
with the Detmold State Theater in Detmold, Germany, the largest touring opera
company in that country. In association with the opera theater at SFASU, he
conducted over twenty separate productions, including such works as Madama
Butterfly, Cavalleria rusticana, Falstaff, Suor Angelica, Les contes d’Hoffmann, Così
fan tutte, Roméo et Juliette, and La tragédie de Carmen, as well as the musicals
Once upon a Mattress, The Most Happy Fella, and A Little Night Music. McDaniel
has performed with such notable artists as Kristin Chenoweth, Marquita Lister,
Kelli O’Hara, Uwe Heilmann, and Leona Mitchell. His present and former coaching
students are working worldwide in opera houses and on stages on Broadway and
across the country.

Ellen Sommer-Bottorff
Pianist
has quickly
established a reputation as a much sought-after
collaborative pianist, chamber musician, and vocal
coach. She performs extensively throughout the United
States, Canada, Central and South America, and Europe.
Most recent engagements have included concerts and
master classes at the University of Costa Rica,
performances at the International Double Reed
convention in Birmingham, England, and a lecture
recital with violinist Tami L. Hughes at the IUTGE
workshop in Leibniz, Austria.
Bottorff often serves as a pianist for regional, national
and international competitions and festivals, as well as
recital series and radio broadcasts. Additionally, she coaches and performs at the
Sound Encounters Suzuki Strings camp and the Brian Lewis Young Artist Program
in Ottawa, KS.
She is a founding member of Allegresse, an inspiring new trio for flute, oboe, and
piano. Recently Allegresse was invited to present recitals and master classes and
to adjudicate at the nationally known new music festival, FENAM in Sacramento,
California. January 2012 Allegresse traveled to Puerto Rico giving performances
and master classes in San Juan.
