Welcome to the 17th Annual Camano Island Studio Tour
2 Welcome to the 17th Annual Camano Island Studio Tour The 43 artists, 30 studios and 3 galleries on this year’s Tour are thrilled that you have chosen to experience art with us this weekend. The Camano Island Studio Tour is one of the oldest, free, self-guided tours in the Pacific Northwest and features highly accomplished juried artists practicing in diverse mediums. This year’s cover artist, John Ebner, is one of the most prolific painters on the Tour whose watercolors are collected nationally. Whether you are inspired by paint, glass, wood, fabric, or photography, we hear from veteran tour visitors every year that they always find something new that reconnects them with their love for art. Our featured artist, Karla Matzke, is a founder of the Studio Tour and her Matzke Fine Art Gallery and Sculpture Park has been a destination for years. Matzke features both an outdoor sculpture park and an eclectic collection of art from world-renowned artists. She also spotlights top local talent, including her own stunning pastel work. Be inspired by the art. Take some time to take in the natural beauty of our island. Visit our sponsors and advertisers and enjoy the hospitality of our local shops. Make memories. We look forward to opening our studios to you and sharing our passion for art. Studio Tour Dates and Times: Two Weekends, 5 days Mother’s Day Weekend: Friday, Saturday & Sunday, May 8-10 Encore Weekend: Sat & Sun, May 16-17 Hours for all days are 10 am to 5 pm Look for the blue CAA signs to guide you along the tour route. Art lives on Camano Island! 3 2015 CAA Cover Artist John Ebner One of the few remaining founding members of the Camano Arts Association, John Ebner’s iconic Camano Island scene, sailboats set in a lush watery landscape, was selected for the cover of this year’s guide. It’s the water that makes John Ebner’s watercolor paintings his own: The mists of the Pacific Northwest hover over Saratoga Passage, Deception Pass, many different waterfalls and mountain tops, and people walking in the rain. It’s the subtle, rich colors that surround him, and the mood of the Northwest, that he strives to reflect in his paintings. Maybe because he was born in Sublimity, Oregon, Ebner’s sublime images inspire awe of this part of the world and beyond, from Admiralty Head to Provence, France. While most of his paintings are seascapes and landscapes, he does bust out now and then to paint a flower or a door, or a market at the tulip festival. Ebner studied advertising art in Portland, then worked in sales and marketing for Hunter Douglas window coverings. His wife, Paula launched his second career in painting by signing him up for a watercolor class in 1973. When they arrived on Camano Island in 1998, he had signed up with Hadley House, a national publisher of fine art, and was showing his original work at Kenneth Behm Galleries and at the granddaddy of Northwest art shows, then known as Bellevue Arts Fair. Before long, he realized he should publish his own work, and now offers many of his images as limited edition lithographs and giclee prints. In recent years he has started reproducing his art on aluminum, giving a more contemporary art look, and he’s also offering big format prints with touches of original paint. When John is not painting watercolors, he might be experimenting with acrylics, pastels, alcohol ink or landscaping. An outdoor extension of his creativity, his elaborate yard on the top of the Northwest corner of Camano, features his very own waterfalls, collages of rocks, shrubs and flowers with sculptures hidden here and there, all framed by a Japanese style Tori gate and roman columns. During the Studio Tour, Ebner welcomes visitors to explore his gardens, as well as his working studio. He likes to say, “When you buy a John Ebner painting, you not only buy a painting but the peace and tranquility of the Pacific Northwest.” www.JohnEbner.com 4 2015 C.A.A. Featured Artist Matzke Fine Art Gallery Matzke Fine Art Gallery features fine art exhibits surrounded by a ten acre sculpture park under a natural temperate canopy. It’s a place for artist workshops and classes, indoors or outdoors, and a designated place for art lovers to view or purchase fine art year round. With changing exhibits every six weeks, we are committed to representing the best and the brightest talent from the Pacific Northwest, and the United States. Over 80 emerging, mid-career, and established artists including Phillip Levine, Hiroshi Yamano, Tracy Powell, Kevin Pettelle, Betty and Russell Frost are on exhibition at the Gallery and Sculpture Park. Our goal is connecting artists and collectors through our special events, exhibits, art production, and art education programs. Nestled among evergreen trees, the gallery and sculpture park currently exhibits 75 sculptures of artists whose works are of world-class significance. We thoughtfully designed the ten acres, leaving much of the natural flora of the Northwest. Sculptures by prominent and emerging American and international artists, utilize bronze, stainless steel, stone, wood and glass. A highly decorated World War II veteran and talented artist, he was a long-time member of CAA and, at 90, was still creating and printing his art. Fred, a printmaker of etchings and block prints, also worked in a wide variety of other mediums including painting, sculpture, serigraphy, pen and ink, pastel and watercolor. Over the years, he exhibited his art in numerous art shows, winning many awards. He was represented by the Graphic Eye Gallery in New York and by Matzke Fine Art Gallery and Sculpture Park on Camano Island. 5 Artist Index, By Medium Medium Artist Name Ceramics Studio # Yonnah Ben & Chaim Bezalel-Levy Sally Chang Roger Cocke Ceramic Art Dian Dangler Ceramic Sculpture Marquerite Goff Porcelain, Stoneware & Raku Dale LeMaster Raku & Stoneware Susan Cohen Thompson Handbuilt Ceramics 31 32 19 12 9 24 11 Lee Beitz Marc Boutte’ Mark Ellinger Ray Fossum Beverly Reaume Mary Simmons Kiln formed glass art Hand Blown & Sculpted Hand Blown Fused Stained Glass Cast, Fused & Lampworked 7 29 33 15 32 22 Russ Riddle Mary Simmons Fine Wood Furnishings Cast Glass 23 22 Lee Beitz Kathy Dannerbeck Marie-Claire Dole Ray Fossum Patti Pontikis Liane Redpath Dolors Ruscha Mary Simmons Gail Thein Fused Fine Silver Fine Jewelry Fused Glass Lampworked Fine Silver Fused Glass Fused Glass Beadwork 7 22 27 15 23 30 28 22 30 Glass Furnishings Jewelry Painting/Mixed Media 6 Description Yonnah Ben & Chaim Bezalel-Levy Mixed Media Paintings Dotti Burton Acrylic, Oils & Watercolors Marilyn Crandall Watercolors John Delzell Acrylics Linda Demetre Oil Marie-Claire Dole Pastels Sylvia Domoto Watercolors 31 26 14 10 3 27 32 Artist Index, By Medium Medium Artist Name Description Studio # Painting/Mixed Media (cont) Betty Dorotik Acrylics & Watercolors Jed Dorsey Acrylics John Ebner Pastels & Watercolor Joan Enslin Acrylics & Watercolors Jack Gunter EggTempera Liz Hamlin Watercolors Diane Hill Oil & Watercolors Dan Koffman Mixed Media Molly LeMaster Watercolors, Mixed Media Karla Matzke Pastels Bobbie Mueller Watercolors Janie Olsen Acrylics Robert Paczkowski Acrylic & Watercolors Fred Pilkington Printmaking Frank Renlie Acrylic, Gouache & Oil John Ringen Watercolors Helen Saunders Acrylic & Mixed Media Pamela Searcy Oil Wayne Simmons Printmaking Susan Cohen Thompson Oils Sue Uhrich Acrylics & Watercolors 5 30 21 13 2 27 6 21 24 8 4 8 17 27 20 1 23 16 18 11 6 Kathy Hastings Terence Rabbitt Nick Seegert Chris Tuohy Jeanne Wolfington Photo Encaustics, Mixed Media 9 32 19 27 28 Bill Matheson Pamela Searcy Wayne Simmons Sue Taves Metal Bronze Bronze Stone 21 16 18 8 Photography Sculpture Textiles Kathy Edelman Hutchinson Terri Jo Summer Handwoven 25 30 7 John Ringen John Ringen Studio 3475 S.
