Photographer: Kori Stanton DJ London Thomas DJ London Thomas Twitter: @djlondonthomas Facebook: facebook.com/djlondonthomas BIO What does Paul Oakenfold, Benny Benassi, and Tiesto all have in common? They've all made their way to the DJ booth to personally give props to London Thomas after finishing his set. London Thomas is a fusion of music and fashion, spinning for club-goers, fashion shows, Celebrity A-listers all over the world including; Justin Timberlake, Jessica Alba, Kim Kardashian, Leonardo DiCaprio, Cristiano Ronaldo, and LeBron James, just to name a few. With his unique style, London Thomas has quickly become known as the essential ingredient needed to “get the party going.” This music connoisseur currently holds down weekly residencies at Reign and Vanquish, arguably two of the hottest clubs in the country attracting the likes of P-Diddy, Kanye West, Jay-Z, Jon Bones Jones, and even Robert DeNiro. London Thomas first discovered EDM (electronic dance music) while growing up in a place where this music genre surprisingly emerged--Detroit. His family relocated to Atlanta during his high school years, and that's where he decided to pursue music as a career coming out of the same music scene that spawned the careers of several of his close friends including Lil Jon, Cee-Lo Green, and Jermaine Dupri. Upon arriving in Los Angeles in 2006, his magnetic personality and talent landed him at what was then the hottest spot in Hollywood, "Mood". London quickly parlayed his notoriety and success and found himself gracing the pages of entertainment-lifestyle magazines including Us Weekly, Zink, and BPM. London reflects, "It was really surreal. For years I dreamt of moving to Hollywood and seeing if I could make it, and within six months of moving here, I was not only spinning in front of my favorite celebrities and athletes at places like Villa, Skybar, and the Playboy Mansion, but magazines were actually writing about it.” His passion for music and fashion has placed him front and center from everything including; Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, Sundance Film Festival, SXSW, Super Bowl, The Oscars, and some of the most prestigious private events all over the world. Now this trendsetter’s vision is to further establish himself into the center of the EDM scene and produce his own music. London explains, "David Guetta has proven that this sound can be blended with what people consider "mainstream music" and it can be done in a way that allows it to climb all the way up to number one on the dance charts and the pop charts...now that's hot!" One of his idols summed London up the best, “His presence is infectious.” - Prince Photographer: Kori Stanton PRESS An interview with DJ London Thomas and Smashbox SB: All right, let’s start from the beginning. Where is the birthplace of all DJ LONDON THOMAS’ musical knowledge? LONDON: I’ve always been in or around music my whole life. First, as a musician in an electronic band–then, as a dancer doing videos for Jermaine Dupri, etc. Then promoting parties; even working the doors at some of Atlanta’s most posh spots–all of it, before taking DJing seriously as a profession. SB: And what was it exactly that finally sent you into DJ’ing seriously? LONDON: I started getting serious in the late 90’s. I was inspired by Mark Ronson and the Winter Music Conference in Miami. Lil’ Louie Vega had a night down there called “The History of Electronica” with Jazzy Jeff, Kenny Dope and Josh Wink. Man, that was the best night I have ever heard at any club. Each DJ covered a different era of dance music. Going all the way back to Kraftwerk’s “Trans-Europe Express”–to Giorgio Moroder’s “The Chase”–to “Dancer” by Gino Soccio–to Alexander Robotnick’s “Problemes D’Amour”...what they called “Italo Disco.” Then they played Change’s “Glow of Love” and all the house and electropop of the 80’s and 90’s. That’s what inspired me to play great dance music across the board. I got my first gigs spinning 80’s pop, rock and hip-hop. PRESS (continued) SB: Can you tell us about your most memorable gigs? Any moment you consider your “big break?” THOMAS: I’ve played for Big Boi (of Outkast fame)–at his birthday party, where Diddy was the host. I also played Jermaine Dupri’s birthday party, where Janet Jackson was the host. Just a lot of local celeb parties as well as many other Atlanta Hawks events. But my biggest break came when I was chosen to DJ for Prince’s Musicology tour after-party. He requested no cursing in the music (even his own)–so I played a mix of Prince, Rick James, Michael Jackson, Madonna and disco. That showed me I could rock any crowd. SB: How is it trying to bridge a sort of divide between musical camps? How do you “feel” out the crowd you’re dealing with? Photographer: Kori Stanton THOMAS: I love the challenge. To me, deejaying is a science. You cannot throw on random songs. It’s like a safe–coming up with a combination is like playing songs in the right sequence. When you get all those numbers right...CLICK. You play what gets the party going. I won’t play every single song that’s a hit on the radio and on MTV just because it’s a hit. It has to fit into my flow and I have to feel it. I still have a mix with my sets–but you also have to play to your crowd. I can definitely play to the rock and roll crowd. At STK, they don’t allow hiphop, techno or electronic music of any kind. They want a rock-and-roll and old school soul all night. So I play rock-and-roll from every era. The 60’s. 70’s. 80’s. And 90’s. I like all kinds of music and the ability to...not be pigeon holed into one platform. It’s a Gemini thing [laughs].
