The Festival was launched in 2004 and this year’s edition will be the largest yet, with media from across the country following the action from the Iroquois Park Sports Centre in Whitby, the largest municipal sports facility in Canada. In the following pages you’ll find information on the Festival’s history, its teams and its significance to the local community and the sport of lacrosse in general. HISTORY OF THE FESTIVAL x x x x x x x Ontario Lacrosse Festival launched in 2004 in response to more than twenty-three consecutive years of participation growth within the OLA As a true “festival” of lacrosse, the event hosts national and provincial competition for players aged 6 to 21 years, along with numerous exhibitors from the lacrosse industry The event declares and awards thirty-six champions over a 10-day period In 2004, the Canadian Sport Tourism Economic Assessment Model estimated Festival economic impact at $1.8 million, as fans from across the country flocked to Whitby to see the competition and visit the outdoor Festival Fun Zone, featuring twenty-two exhibitors involved in all aspects of the sport. Festival economic impact in 2014 is estimated at $5.7 million Highlight of this year’s Festival will be the crowning of three national champions, as the finals of the Bantam Girls, Midget Girls, and Junior Women’s Lacrosse Championships of Canada will be contested on Saturday, August 19th. New to the Festival this year are the national championships for the Bantam, Midget, and Junior divisions of female players as part of its 10-day celebration of the game. In total the Festival hosts thirty-seven separate national and provincial championships in both box and field lacrosse. Mark the evening of Saturday, August 9th on your calendar, as the Festival hosts double-header, national championship gold medal games at Iroquois Park Sports Centre in Whitby. One ticket gets access to both the Midget and Junior championships beginning at 6:30 PM. This year nearly 565 teams and 10,865 players and coaches are expected to participate in the Festival. The expanded size of the event sees the use of four municipalities to incorporate all those attending. Facilities in use for the 2014 Festival are: Iroquois Park, McKinney Arena, and Luther Vipond Arena in Whitby, Legends Centre in Oshawa, Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex in Clarington, and the Ajax Community Centre in Ajax. The Harrow/OAL Pee Wee and Gait/OLA Bantam Provincial Championships get underway at 8:00 AM on Friday, August 1st following the opening ceremonies at Iroquois Park. Rogers Television returns to broadcast the championship games of the three national tournaments on Sunday, August 10th from Iroquois Park Sports Centre, where organizers expect a sold out facility for the eleventh consecutive year. In addition to the indoor tournament competition, an outdoor Festival Fun Zone is on-site providing unique, engaging and experiential opportunities for Festival fans. "The Ontario Lacrosse Festival is a 10-day combination of great competition and fun for the entire family", said Ontario Lacrosse Association President John Doherty. "The OLA is once again pleased to partner with the Durham Region to deliver first-class facilities for the excitement and drama of our provincial championship tournaments. On behalf of the OLA, we extend an invitation to everyone to join us at our annual celebration of the game". 2014 Presenting Sponsors of the Festival are Brine, Gait Lacrosse, Harrow Sports, STX Lacrosse, Under Armour, and Warrior Sports.
