News from the Hall Gatesinger Company, Ltd. www.gateshall.com (315) 589-3326 Fall 2015 YouTheatre will rock the house with Gates Hall, home to community theatre since 1867. One of the most explosive movie musicals in recent memory bursts onto the live Gates Hall stage! With rockin’ rhythms and dynamic new songs for the stage version, this is a must-see with a powerful story. When Ren (Ian MacKay) and his mother (Isabelle Collier) move from Chicago to a small farming town, Ren is not prepared for the rigorous local edicts, including a ban on dancing instituted by the local preacher (Abram Collier), who is determined to exercise the control over the town's youth that he cannot command in his own home. When the reverend's rebellious daughter Ariel (Avery Carlson) sets her sights on Ren, her roughneck boyfriend Chuck (Cirrus Hanna) tries to sabotage Ren's reputation, with many of the locals eager to believe the worst about the new kid. The heartfelt story that emerges is of a father longing for the son he lost and of a young man aching for the father who walked out on him. FOOTLOOSE celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people, guiding them with a warm heart and an open mind. The reverend’s wife Vi is played by the Gatesinger Board’s YouTHeatre liason Autumn Pollock. The local teens include Chuck’s friends Lyle (Dan Mares) and Travis (Harrison VandeWalle), Willard, (Kit Hohenboken); Ariel’s girlfriends Rusty (Emma Vos), Urleen (Carley Randall), and Wendy Jo (Moriah Mantelli). Cont. on p. 3 From Gates Hall to Broadway…. And Back! Broadway performer and Gatesinger alumni J. Michael Zygo, accompanied by his wife, Jillian, also a professional performer, hosted a Youth Audition Workshop at Gates Hall on Saturday, August 8th. The workshop was followed by a free concert where Mike and Jillian thrilled the audience with their amazing talents! Mike graduated from Williamson High School and performed right here in historic Gates Hall in the YouTHeatre program. The Gatesinger Company was truly honored to have Mike and Jillian share their time and talents with the students and community. What a great success! J. Michael Zygo was a member of the original cast of the Tony Award winning musical, Once. Together, Mike and Jillian have delighted audiences from coast to coast co-starring as Robbie and Julia in The Wedding Singer, as well as Will Parker and Ado Annie in the National Tour of OKLAHOMA! Mike Zygo has also performed as Drew in Rock of Ages, Huck Finn in Big River, and the Emcee in Cabaret. Jillian Zygo’s credits include Fannie Brice in Funny Girl, Annie Oakley in Annie Get Your Gun, and Nancy in Oliver. Thanks to Mike and Jillian for inspiring today’s Gatesinger Youth! Page 2 Gatesinger Company, Ltd., News A message from the President Carl Webeck, President Gatesinger Board of Directors As the anticipation for this fall’s YouTHeatre production of Footloose builds, we are also presented with a time of thanksgiving. I am sure that we will have much to be thankful for as Footloose delights us through the talents of its youthful cast. And presently, I am thinking about how I am looking forward to that performance. I am also thinking about how we are thankful for past YouTHeatre director Barb Hunn, who has decided to move out of the area, for she delighted our audiences, guided our youth, and befriended us all. I was first on stage with Barb in 1989 in Mattress, (that was my first musical with a multigenerational cast). Some years later, she played the memorable leading role of Martha Jefferson in 1776. She has played numerous notable roles before and after these two I mention. But it was during these two performances when I began to admire Barb for her talent, excellence, and commitment to the Gatesinger Company— all while she was bringing up her two young children (Steve and Diana). The last time I saw Barb I told her that her family, although including just two generations, is one of the “old-time Gates Hall families.” The Hunn Family has made such an impact on us all. While not the oldest participating family, it is hard for us to remember a former season-of-shows without their participation. I am thankful for the fond memories and the friendship of Barb and her family. So for me, the Hunns will always be one of the “old-time Gates Hall families.” IOLANTHE Sparkles at Gates Hall On July 17-19, IOLANTHE lit up the Gates Hall stage with magic, merriment and melodious music. Always a highlight of the Pultneyville Homecoming celebration, the 2015 Gilbert and Sullivan production played to the delight of two full houses. Under the direction of Karen Skerrett Nail, the fairies sparkled and made mischief, creating havoc among the dignified and stately peers. The rollicking chorus numbers, beautiful ballads and “tantan-ta-ras” played against a fantasy set created by the talented Tammy Buehler (with the able assistance of Cynthia Paoli and Gavin Buehler). With the usual G&S topsy-turvy plot twists, elevated by fairy magic and resolved through a legal loophole, fairies and peers all flew off to live happily ever after. Congratulations to the talented cast and crew of this magical production! Parade Fun Gatesinger Company was well-represented at this year’s Pultneyville Homecoming Parade! Here, Danielle shares her story and some advice for young performers. I started with YouTHeatre in the fall of 1995, playing the role of Reno Sweeny in “Anything Goes” under the direction of Paul Liedmann. Some of my closest and dearest friends today were my castmates in that show. Following high school graduation, I returned on occasion to perform in special productions at Gates Hall: A Grand Night for Singing, A Christmas Show, and as Miss Mazeppa in Gypsy, all under the direction of Steve Covey and Nan Hanna-Paquin. I returned to the Rochester area in the early 2000’s to earn a Masters Degree in Education from Nazareth College, with a Vocal Performance concentration earning Theatre Arts and English certifications. During those years, I was very involved performing in Gatesinger spring productions and vocal directing YouTHeatre. I returned to NYC in 2002 to resume my career in professional theatre. At a very young age, I made it a point to do as much performing as possible. There was never a doubt that I wanted to sing and dance, and I had to do what was necessary to stay competitive. I attended Wagner College on a full scholarship for Musical Theatre, due to my involvement with community theatre. You MUST do more than your high school shows to be competitive in theatre arts programs! I have worked on Broadway, National Tours, and Regional productions, as well as radio work, Disney Theatricals and directed over 30 productions. After I got married, I returned to Wayne County in 2006 to start my family. I began directing area high school shows, community theatre and working in the Education Department with Rochester Broadway Theatre League. The Stars of Tomorrow program - as well as the Middle School Theatre experience - are two amazing learning opportunities for any child in the arts. I would encourage you to take advantage of EVERY opportunity available to work with the pros and learn your craft in our VERY arts-centered community! This business isn’t one for those who aren’t willing to WORK. It is one that requires dedication, heart, heartache and will power. When your friends are out having fun, you are going to be in the theatre memorizing lines. When your friends are at the homecoming game, you are going to be in a practice room learning your new songs. Keep in mind though, ALL of your hard work will come full circle and there is no greater feeling than that of the rolling applause from your audience. Keep shining! Searching for Directors! The Gatesinger Company is now accepting proposals for our 2016-17 season: The Mikado, July 2016 (submit proposals by November 15, 2015) YouTHeatre show, Fall 2016 (submit proposals by January 15, 2016) Spring Show, 2017 (submit proposals by January 15, 2016) You’ll find details and information at gateshall.com.
