San Diego Junior Theatre's In the Heights, of course! Carlos Mendoza's cast of In the Heights is fabulous and extremely talented! You probably wouldn't believe me if I said that I enjoyed this cast's performance much more than the National Broadway tour. It is the truth. Not to take anything away from the hard-working artists on tour who are definitely talented. However, I found these young artists to be so much more energetic and the chemistry of the cast was fantastic. In the Heights is a story about family, hopes, dreams and the everyday struggle of a New York Latino neighborhood called Washington Heights. The story isn't too unusual but the music and lyrics written by Lin Manuel-Miranda and the book by Quiara Alegria Hudes takes the story to new "heights" with its contemporary score flavored with rhythmic salsa beats. Director Carlos Mendoza cast and directed this show beautifully. Michael Garciais a believable Usnavi, and he leads the cast terrifically throughout. His vocals and acting are very impressive and it wouldn't be surprising to find him reprising this role in a professional capacity. He is not alone in his ability to convey the text and meaning of this show. Vanessa Orozco plays Nina, a Stanford dropout who has lost her scholarship after trying to hold two jobs. Orozco brings a nice balance of vulnerability and strength to the character. She displays gorgeous vocals in "Everything I know," and after her performance I am certain I heard sniffles in the audience. Nina's love interest, Benny, is played byDavid Coffey. Benny tries hard to be accepted by Nina's father, Kevin (Isaac Brieske) who is also Benny's employer. Coffey is able to portray his character's angst in dealing with Nina's father as well as his feelings for Nina. Despite their youth, Coffey and Orozco are committed to their characters and have great chemistry. "When You're Home" contained great staging and "Sunrise" was telling of Nina and Benny's developing relationship. San Diego Junior Theatre In the Heights (cont.) Isaac Brieske expresses the challenges he is faced with as a Father and provider in "Inutil," and does it excellently. Yasmin Ruiz is a perfect match for Camila, who is Kevin's wife and Nina's mother. Ruiz reads mature onstage, which is perfect for this role, and she was on fire in "Enough". Her vocals shined in "Siempre". Other great performances came from Sam Brogadir as Sonny, Samantha Wang as Vanessa, and Jazley Genovese as abuela Claudia. Brogadir's Sonny is a great match for Garcia's Usnavi, and the interaction between Sonny and other characters is fun to watch on stage. Wang, who portrays Vanessa, is great in "It Won't Be Long Now". There is some wonderful playfulness between Vanessa and Usnavi in "Champagne". A versatile Miss Genovese plays a dynamic Abuela Claudia and "Paciencia y Fe" is quite memorable. Some real standouts in our featured roles were Nisa Mercado as Daniela, Natasha Portnoy as Carla, Mashun Tucker as Graffiti Pete, and Connor Marsh as Piragua Guy. Let's start with Piragua Guy, because I can still hear the yells and hollers from his performance. It may be a small role, but the role calls for some powerful singing with charisma, and Mr. Marsh does deliver both. Mr. Marsh possesses great vocals and wonderful stage presence. Ms. Mercado gave an excellent performance in "Carnaval del Barrio" along with Ms. Portnoy, who also was a sassy and fun Daniela. "No me Diga" was solid. Mr. Tucker was a memorable Graffiti Pete. For some reason, this character is more present in this production, which means this actor brought this character to life and made him a real person. Kudos to all of these actors and even more praise to Carlos Mendoza for his admirable direction of this production. Mendoza built a marvelous ensemble. They provided exceptional support for the cast of leads and supporting roles. Some of my favorites musical numbers were "96,000" and "The Club/Blackout". I love the harmonies and overlays this musical's score has, and when sung by talented singers it is breathtaking. Mendoza's choreography was solid, Tony Cucuzella's set design was a perfect backdrop for Washington Heights, and Matthew Novotny's lighting was consistent and enhanced every scene. Overall, a truly enjoyable theater experience in Balboa Park. In the Heights was worth the drive and parking hassle, and my one complaint is that it was the closing show. D. San Diego Junior Theatre It’s a Bird...It’s a Plane...It’s Superman Photos by Ken Jacques THE SHOW: Music by Charles Strouse, Lyrics by Lee Adams, Book by David Newman & Robert Benton, Based on the comic strip by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster. Broadway debut in 1966. In this 1960s musical comedy spoof of the popular television series, Superman is a nice guy who always does good with his nifty powers, subduing evil bad guys that sometimes require a POW!, BAM!, or ZONK!. He drinks in the adoration of happy humans who marvel over his goodness with out-of-control cheesiness. But such a sparkly good image can attract the attention of evil psychopaths, in this case the crazed nuclear scientist Dr. Sedgwick who was driven mad by being the Nobel Prize’s version of Susan Lucci. When destruction occurs that Superman didn’t prevent because of a civic celebration honoring Superman’s goodness, Superman falls into despair. Pile on the fact that Lois Lane, bored with her Superman relationship that seems to consist only of him repeatedly saving her life, becomes romantically interested in the scientist’s assistant Jim. Together it’s a double-whammy that leaves our hero despondent in his unkempt apartment strewn with empty cartons from his bender on wholesome milk. THE PRODUCTION: San Diego Junior Theatre offers theatergoers a rare glimpse of this supremely cheesy musical spoof, and in their hands it’s a rare treat. Director James Saba along with his cast and design team all have a keen feel for the show’s humor. The visuals include Jay Heiserman’s stylized Manhattan/Metropolis skyline, good Sixties outfits by Sparks Rejent-Moeller and the orchestra up in the background rather than down in the pit looking more like a swank Manhattan nightclub of yesteryear. The super-talented cast members are all on the same page, fully embracing the cheesy spoof with an innate feel for the characters and characterizations they are spoofing. As Superman, Connor Marsh has a phenomenal speaking and singing voice while also comically poses while flashing his toothy smile, winking to his admirers, glowing in the praise of the adoring citizens of Metropolis, being somewhat baffled by San Diego Junior Theatre It’s a Bird...It’s a Plane...It’s Superman (cont.) the theory of romance, and falling into melodramatic despair when his streak of successful heroism comes to an end. Isabelle Pickering is a consummate 60-ish play on Lois Lane also with a perfect singing and speaking style as well as a steady demeanor no matter the situation, reacting to the warning of imminent global nuclear destruction with the same “Oh, my goodness” that she absentmindedly might give to a child who tells her that a kitten is stuck in a tree. She’s also great reacting to the lack of romance from Superman, unwanted office romance from cocky coworker Max, and eventual interest in the cynical Jim. Sam Brogadir is super smooth and amusing as the full-of-himself Max who is determined to figure out Superman’s alter ego while both making time to string his ditzy girlfriend Sydney along and constantly trying to slick his way into Lois’s love life. Garrett Hoff entertains as Jim, trying to irritate Lois with his dismissal of women and humans in general with We Don’t Matter At All but simultaneously becoming intrigued with her. Casey Purlia Johnson is hilarious with expressions, body language, and voice as the ditzy floosy Sydney constantly frustrated with bad boyfriend Max (Ooh, Do You Love You) and making an unforgettable play for a clueless Clark Kent in the musical’s hit number You’ve Got Possibilities. Johnathon Michel is diabolically nerdy as mad scientist Sedgwick obsessed with destroying Superman. He cons his way into watching The Daily Planet’s public service announcement film on the origins of Superman, although on opening night the audio worked but the video didn’t, leading to a few funny adlibs, some shadow puppetry on the screen, and added emphasis on lines like Lois indicating that Superman is very concerned with his image and Sedgwick referring to “the man on the screen.” Sophia Oberg stars as Sedgwick’s sub-contractor in crime as Madame Ling, an amusingly bitter head of the out-of-work Flying Lings who blames the flying Superman for their unemployment (who’s going to pay to see the Flying Lings when they can see Superman fly for free?). While the ensemble of Metropolis adults and children bring the city fully to life with effervescent charisma, wonder, great vocals, and unrestrained glee over their local superhero. The Plant chooses the inauspicious Mushnik’s Flower Shop on Skid Row to gather his strength. The bumbling Seymour, who does odd-jobs at the flower shop, discovers The Plant and christens it Audrey II , named after the buxom blonde who also works at the shop. The real Audrey falls for Seymour after her sadistic boyfriend, dentist Orin Scrivello, disappears. The show is narrated by a Greek Chorus of street urchins, and could end in tragedy. YAT’s production was sterling!! This reviewer has had the good fortune of reviewing this show’s star, Anthony Vacio, in two of his prior productions (Tony in West Side Story and Claude in Hair). I mention this only because he was great in both, and as different as those two roles are, Seymour goes in yet a completely different direction, and Vacio pulls it off like a natural. He has a pleasant voice, a natural acting style, and a great look. I really felt a connection with him! Sierra Schultz had Audrey’s lisp and accent down to a science, and her eyes sparkled like emeralds. Her singing was powerful and moved the audience to spontaneous verbal outcry. She was funny, beautiful, and heartwarming. The trio of men: Sam Alper (Mushnik), Kendall Kiplinger (Orin), and Leif Corbiel (Plant) put up a great effort, but it was hard for anyone not to be outshined by the four urchins. Usually, I find a favorite urchin to watch, but in this production I loved each urchin for their uniqueness. Cari Callen (Ronnette) was clearly “the voice” and was a strong leader type, but Marissa Cabading (Chiffon) was awesomely powerful as the strong Latina voice in the group. As for Bella Snyder, how did her parents know the perfect first name for her? I would have been happy to simply gaze on her beauty, as she is a “10”, but Bella is more than just a pretty face. Her riffs at the end of the show were mesmerizing. But as good as all three of these girls were, Megan Singer’s antics delighted the audience. Ashleigh is an added character, so one never knows how much of the credit should go to Megan or the Director Perry Lee. But, either way, she was a highlight of the show for me. Speaking of Perry Lee, not only did he do a stellar job of directing a show with fabulous pace, blocking, and feel, but he also captained the choreography, which was just perfect! Aside from the wonderful urchin dancing, Alper was the best Mushnik dancer that I have ever seen. It would be nice to see Alper play the part when he is about 20 years older. Finally, the harmonies in this production were exquisite! Kudos to Music Director Matthew Ignacio who kept the singers honest and true. My only real criticism was that I wished the volume of the music and the performers would have been significantly louder. I do not know if their sound system was malfunctioning, or if it was kept intentionally low, but I urge them to turn it up louder for next weekend, because I am recommending that everyone go see it next week. YAT has more shows on Thursday 10/23 through Sunday 10/26. Performed October 18 - 26, 2014 Scott M.
