KENT STATE AT 2015 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS 2014-15 RESULTS K ent State will be well represented at the 85th NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships March 19-21, at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. Sending five wrestlers this season, the Golden Flashes look to extend their six-year trend of having at least one All-American. Junior 157-pounder Ian Miller has his sights set even higher following a fourth place finish at last year’s NCAA Championships. Miller will be joined by Mack McGuire, Tyler Small, Mike DePalma and Mimmo Lytle. The 2015 season marks the ninth time in 10 years the Golden Flashes have sent five or more wrestlers to the national tournament and 10th consecutive season Kent State has sent four or more. All 10 weight classes will have 33-man brackets battling for All-America (Top 8) honors. Thursday’s opening session begins at 12 Eastern/11 Central. Every Session Televised, Every Match Covered All six sessions will be televised on either ESPN or ESPNU and every match will be carried on ESPN3 throughout the entire three-day competition. Friday night’s semifinals (Session IV) and Saturday night’s finals (Session VI) can be seen on ESPN, both beginning at 8 p.m. Eastern. Sessions I, II, III and V can be seen on ESPNU. Projected Opening Round Matchups with Seeds 133: 16 Mack McGuire (29-11) vs. Gary Wayne Harding (28-11) Oklahoma State 141: Tyler Small (32-13) vs. 4 Devin Carter (29-3) Virginia Tech 149: Mike DePalma (21-17) vs. 13 Charles Cobb (20-5) Penn 157: 7 Ian Miller (12-4) vs. Doug Welch (27-11) Purdue 285: Mimmo Lytle (28-18) vs. 12 Denzel Dejournette (32-4) Appalachian State Tournament History Since 2009, five Golden Flashes have combined for eight All-American finishes, including two national final appearances by Dustin Kilgore, who became Kent State’s first national champion in 2011. Twenty different Golden Flashes have combined for 24 All-American finishes at the NCAA Championships dating back to Cameron Falcone’s third place finish in 1939. That season under Head Coach Joe Begala, the Golden Flashes finished 12th as a team. Begala’s teams earned fifth place in both 1941 and 1942, the highest finishes in program history. Until Kilgore’s championship in 2011, 1941 & 1942 were the only two seasons in which Kent State wrestlers (Mike Slepecky, Walter Porowski) earned spots in the championship finals. With the efforts of Begala, the M.A.C. Center in Kent served as the host of the NCAA Championships in 1963 and 1967. Last year in Oklahoma City, Ian Miller knocked off defending NCAA champion Derek St. John (Iowa) on his way to a fourth place finish. Mike DePalma went 2-2 in his first NCAA appearance. As a team, the Golden Flashes finished tied for 29th place, while Penn State won its fourth consecutive NCAA championship. Small won three open tournaments this season (EMU, Mercyhurst, Ashland). • Kent State is No. 26 according to both Wrestling Report and No. 27 in Wrestling Insider NewsMagazine’s Tournament Power Index. NWCA Coaches Poll. HEAD COACH Jim Andrassy’s 2009-10 squad earned a No. 16 ranking in the final 2010 NWCA Coaches Poll, proving just how far the program had come since his first season, (2003-04) when the Flashes tied for last place at the MAC Tournament. While facing a number of nationally ranked opponents, KSU finished 15-4 in dual meets and captured the school’s first Body Bar Invitational title. ANDRASSY Kent State ‘95 • 12th Season Jim Andrassy has put Kent State wrestling into the national spotlight and kept it there. Andrassy has been a part of KSU’s program for 24 seasons, including the last 12 as head coach. In nine of the last 10 seasons, the Golden Flashes have sent five or more qualifiers to the NCAA Championships. In eight of those seasons, Kent State finished in the top two spots of the MidAmerican Conference standings and compiled a 109-37-1 dual meet record during an eight-year run. Named Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year in 2009, Andrassy has helped produce seven All-American performances from five different wrestlers including a 2011 national champion (Dustin Kilgore) and three NCAA top 25 team finishes. In 2012, Kent State sent a program-record seven wrestlers to the NCAA Championships and won the Mid-American Conference regular season title with a 5-0 mark in conference duals. The Flashes were ranked No. 13 in the final NWCA Coaches Poll and won a Virginia Duals title. One year earlier, the Golden Flashes totaled six NCAA qualifiers and their 17th place finish at the NCAA Championships was the highest since 1985. KSU earned a share of the MAC regular season title in 2011 and placed third at the Virgnia Duals with a victory over No. 8 Lehigh in the consolation final. The Flashes were ranked No. 17 in the final In 2008-09, KSU won the MAC regular season title by going 5-0 in conference duals, carrying an overall mark of 13-4. The Flashes claimed four individual MAC championships and finished runner-up at the MAC Tournament. KSU sent a school record six wrestlers to the NCAA Championships that season, all of whom won at least two matches as KSU tied for 18th place, its highest finish since 1985. During Andrassy’s 11 years as head coach, the Golden Flashes have gone 134-77-1 in dual meets. KSU has also finished second at MAC Tournament in seven straight years. During the last nine years under Andrassy’s watch, Kent State’s list of 100-win wrestlers has grown from four to 14. “We were a team that traditionally took 1-3 guys to nationals when I was an assistant and now we’re consistently taking 5-6 guys every year,” Andrassy said of the program’s recent history. During his tenure on the staff, Andrassy helped bring in some of the nation’s top recruiting classes, including a national top 10 class in 2007 and a top 20 class in 2008. Prior to being named the head coach in 2003, Andrassy was an assistant coach for the Golden Flashes for the previous nine seasons - the last six as a full-time assistant - after earning four letters and a MAC individual title as a wrestler from 1991-94. He replaced Frank Romano who retired following seven seasons as head coach. Following his collegiate career, Andrassy joined the Kent State wrestling staff as a student assistant for one year while finishing his degree, then spent another year as a volunteer coach and a third as a graduate assistant prior to being elevated to a fulltime assistant in 1997. Andrassy is just the sixth head coach in the 82year history of Kent State wrestling, joining A.S. Roberts (1927-29), Joe Tabor (1942-43), Joe Begala (1929-42, ‘45-71), Ron Gray (1971-96) and Romano (1996-2003). As a wrestler at Kent State, Andrassy posted a career record of 106-25-1. He is one of just two KSU wrestlers to reach 100 victories in only four seasons. He was 26-6 his junior season en route to a MAC championship at 158 pounds and finished 27-7 as a senior, earning one of the MAC’s wildcard bids to the NCAA Championships. At the national meet, he won two of his four matches and finished one victory away from All-America status. Andrassy earned a bachelor’s degree in rhetoric and communications from Kent State in 1995 and a master’s in sport management in 2002. Since 2000, he has served as a part-time instructor in KSU’s physical education department. A native of Macedonia, Ohio, Andrassy resides in Stow with his three daughters, Megan, Emily and Ryann. 2014-15 MATCH RESULTS-MACK MCGUIRE Opponent - School Mack McGUIRE Jr./Jr. • 133 • Upper St. Clair, Pa./Upper St. Clair Career • Three-time NCAA qualifier • 81 wins in three seasons 2014-2015 • Earned No. 16 seed at NCAA Championships • Placed third at MAC Championships • Earned wins against five different NCAA qualifiers including No. 2 seed Bradley Taylor (Wisconsin) • Went 6-2 in MAC duals • Won 133-pound title at Navy Classic, going 5-0 with a pin and a major decision • Placed second at Brockport/Oklahoma Invitational • Second most wins on the team (29) • Placed sixth at Southern Scuffle, going 5-3 2013-2014 • Tied for team lead with 27 wins • Owns 10 wins over 2014 NCAA qualifiers • Placed third at MAC Championships, earning automatic qualifying spot to NCAA Championships • Went 4-0 at Virginia Duals • Placed seventh at Southern Scuffle, going 4-2 • Placed third at Navy Classic, going 5-1 with a major decision • Went 15-9 in dual meets and 5-3 in MAC duals • Ranked No. 23 in final Coaches Panel and earned No. 16 seed at NCAA Championships • Is 2-1 this season against opening round opponent Mike Manley (Missouri) 2012-2013 • Placed fifth at the MAC Championships • Took over starting 133-pound role in January • Earned at-large spot at NCAA Championships, going 1-2 • Biggest win came against eventual All-American Jon Morrison (Oklahoma State) • Placed second at the Brute Invitational going 3-1 with a major decision • Placed fifth at Michigan State Open going 5-2 with a pin • Placed sixth at Buffalo Brawl Invitational • Went 3-2 with a pin at Nittany Lion Open Prior to Kent State • PIAA state champion and WPIAL champion as a senior • Went 138-9 in his high school career • State runner-up and WPIAL champion as a junior • Placed in top four spots at WPIAL in all four seasons Personal • Born August 10, 1993 • Son of Mike and Caroline McGuire • Has three siblings Mike, Meghan and Mason • Majoring in integrated health studies Result BROOKPORTOKLAHOMA INVITATIONAL W, 8-3 (DEC) Andy Schultz - Bloomsburg W, (For.)
