Mpls, MN JUNE Newsletter of the Viking Chapter Antique Motorcycle Club of America Inc Published Quarterly 2013 March, June, September, December [email protected] http:www.vikingmc.org SPARKY’S PLUG by Ron Spargo In the March newsletter I was complaining that I really wanted to get out and ride. It seemed that our Minnesota winter was never going to end. Well, here we are in June and the winter has ended (but not without one last shot of snow in May) and the riding season is in full swing. The riding has been great and we have already had several great riding and show events. By the time you read this the Viking Chapter National Meet at the Minnesota State fairgrounds will be only a week or so (June 14-15) away. This year’s event promises to be the largest and best National Meet the Viking Chapter has put on – ever! For those of you who are new to the Viking Chapter or for those of you who have not been able to attended this event I invite you to come see and participate in the best antique / vintage motorcycle event in the Midwest. Shine up your favorite old (35 years or older) ride and bring it to the fairgrounds for everyone to enjoy. It doesn’t have to be a restored or show bike. While there are many restored and show quality bikes in the show most of them are everyday rides and we want to see them there. This event is about old bikes – including yours! As an added bonus the Viking Chapter has invited the Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club to hold their annual show and meet along with our show and meet. Both events will be held in the Progress Building near the water tower on the north end of the fairgrounds. The VJMC members turn out some outstanding machines that will be a great addition to the event. We are also trying to get a few other clubs to bring out their best but at this writing nothing has been confirmed. You’ll just have to show up and see what is there. As usual, we welcome all the help we can get to take a shift at the gate, meet folks or be available to answer questions and promote the club. You too can wear an orange vest and look official. If you want to be a part of this event call Sean O’Neil @ 612-508-4855. Check out the event schedule in this issue and mark your calendars. If you need additional information or have questions about a particular event contact any officer or board member and they will be able to provide the information you need. One event that I would like to bring to everyone’s attention is the August picnic at Firemen’s Park in Chaska. The club provides most of the food including the beverages, corn on the cob, chicken, burgers and dogs expertly prepared by our own Jerry Richards. Club members will receive a post card or e-mail with suggestions of what they can bring to complete the meal. The club motto “Ride To Eat – Eat To Ride” is certainly true for this event. No one has ever left hungry! I mention this event specifically because it is also the general meeting where we request nominations for club officers whose terms will be expiring at the end of the year. If you have ever thought it would be fun to be more active in the operation of the club or would like to nominate a fellow member for a club position, this is your chance to become more involved in your club. If you are thinking about it but have questions, call any of the club officers or board members. It doesn’t require much time or effort and I think you may enjoy it. Don’t just stand there watching the bikes ride by. Get involved! It’s your club. Now let’s go ride! 1 Editors Note CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS So, Ya tired of all this rain yet? Recently elected for another two year term starting last month, this dynamic duo has opted to venture off, thus creating an open position on the Chapter Board. In addition to helping keep the club and club events working smoothly, this position requires attendance at our monthly Board Meetings to take minutes of the meeting. Kathi Rimnac has volunteered to fill this void until someone steps up. Please, get involved and help your club - Step Up! We’ll be having our annual Sturgis Get-Together again this year at the cabin. This is always a good turnout for Viking Chapter and other AMCA members that are in the area for the Black Hills Motor Classic. This year’s date is Monday, August 5 from 12:00 noon until 6:00 p.m. Chili and beverages provided. So motor over to 21432 U.S. Highway 85 South near Lead, SD (605-584-9082). The cabin is .09 of a mile southwest of Cheyenne Crossing Restaurant (intersection of U.S. Highway 85 South in Spearfish Canyon). Members handled vintage motorcycles for sale: Tom Broich, Steve Clough, Dave Glennen, Gene Hostetler, Mark Jilk, Stan Mewhorter, Doug Nelson, Dan “Doc” Nylen, Kerry Rasmussen, Roger Rimnac and Jerry Richards. Kathi Rimnac, Secretary and Membership Chair signed up new memberships. Trudi Johnson-Richards assisted. Ron Christianson generously offered to pay half of all new membership fees for the Viking Chapter ($15) and AMCA National ($30). Viking and AMCA National now have 11 new members. In addition, Viking receives a contribution for assisting at the auction. Thank you to Ron and Sandy and the volunteers who made this auction a success. Despite the unseasonably cold and crappy weather, the Viking club came through with another amazing display at the Donnie Smith show. With a lot of guys still snowed in, Stan Mewhorter and Ivar Natins came through big time and helped haul bikes for other club members. Our display spot was the same primo spot as last year which prominently showed off club’s unique mix of machines. Ron Christenson came through in a pinch and contributed two bikes to help fill in for last minute cancellations. We had our fill of some perfect alphabet roads in WI, good food, and good times. The late Spring/Summer did provide us with a tasty surprise. The 2013 National Meet is shaping up to be another great event with a lot of excitement around our fabulous motorcycle display. We need every club member to participate. Our show is known for its huge level of diversity and quality, but everyone needs to pitch in to make that happen and continue to grow our club. But don’t worry if you forget to bring the pass. The membership rolls will be at the show and you can easily check in once you get there. Just say you’re a member and proceed to the registration desk. One of the new benefits you got with the increase in yearly chapter dues from $12 to $15 this year, all Viking Members (and their spouses if they have a joint membership) will get into the National Meet for free. This change was primarily made to shift revenue away from the Meet and to segregate revenue we gather from members apart from revenue gathered from non-members. This helps immensely with our non-profit tax status. It also is a great way to encourage all members to attend the meet. (I think) and I’d like to tell you about a book I’ve just published. My husband and I have spent the last two summers riding some of Minnesota’s most scenic highways on our 2002 Victory cruiser. The result is Ride Minnesota: 23 Great Motorcycle Rides in the North Star State. I’ve packed as much motorcycling information as I could into this 196-page book, including route descriptions, road conditions, maps, photos (some of them taken from the back of the bike) and recommendations on places to eat, visit or sleep. It’ just 6” x 9”, so it fits easily in a saddle bag. Looking for a biker bar in Brownsville? Or the road conditions along the Minnesota River Valley Scenic Byway? It’s covered in Ride Minnesota. The book is only $10, and it would make a great Mother’s Day gift for a motorcycle mama. You can order it directly from me. Just send an e-mail to me at the address below. (Add $3.80 for shipping.) Or, you can order it from Amazon. com. I’d be happy to put together a group order, too. Just ask! Thanks for your time. Let’s get out and Ride Minnesota! If opening up the carburetor reveals a plethora of fine white powder, yer sunk mate, this is terminal cancer to a carburetor. What you’re looking at is extreme corrosion, generally caused by water getting inside of the body. Not only are the passages most likely blocked; they will also be pitted, something we can’t effectively remedy. Even cleaned out, the pitting will cause running problems. Junk the carburetor body, but save everything else, as many other parts may be perfectly serviceable. This hole, the fuel intake for the pilot system, may or may not have a jet screwed into it. Watch this carefully when testing, as you should get a good shot of fluid out of this hole. If only a dribble or nothing comes out, you have a blocked or partially blocked pilot system. If you find no abundance of white powder and a serviceable’ air-adjustment system, it’s highly likely you can now bring this critter back to good functioning form, although there are other maladies that often need attention beyond the pilot system. The most common problems here are slide/body wear and flange distortion, but these are also correctable. Excessive slide/body clearance will require, specialist work though, while fixing a warped flange can be accom- plished with a flat piece of glass with a sheet of 600 grit sandpaper glued on it. Use WD 40 as a lubricant and sand the flange in circular motions until it’s perfectly flat and able to hold a seal without leaking air. Use a thick piece of glass with 600 grit sandpaper glued onto it as a cutting tool to make a perfectly flat flange surface. Move the carburetor in circles and check frequently. Warped flanges on Amal carburetors are as common as Lucas jokes and cause just us many problems. Pilot to Ground Control OK, now we need to strip the carburetor body and test the pilot system for proper flow. For this test you need a can of either carburetor cleaner or WD 40 both of which should come with a thin plastic hose attachment. Remove the air screw completely and insert the plastic tube firmly in its place. With your other hand, block the same hole on the outside of the carburetor mouth you did to check the air system. Now squirt the fluid and watch what happens. If all’s well you should get fluid out of three places, two are inside the carburetor, one just inside of the spot where the slide runs and one just outside of it. These are called the pilot bypass and pilot outlet, respectively. These two inside holes are very tiny, but they are most commonly free and working. The same is most definitely not true for the little threaded hole in the carburetor base, the pilot fuel intake which may or may not have a jet 6 screwed into it. Regardless of internal or external jet, you should get a decent amount of fluid out of this opening. If you only get a tiny dribble, or none at all, you’ve got a blocked or partially blocked pilot system. The good news is that this is very fixable. Check the air adjustment screw as explained in the text and remove it for testing the pilot system. Our first step is to tank the bare carburetor body in a can of commercial carburetor cleaner. This is an extremely nasty concoction of hazardous, carcinogenic chemicals, so dangerous that it’s unavailable in some areas. Seriously, chemical carburetor dip tanks work wonders, but only use one in a very well ventilated area and keep the stuff off of your hands. Several companies make special rubber gloves for this sort of work too. Dip the carburetor body and other parts in the tank and let it sit a good spell. Directions often say for only 30 minutes, but overnight is often required, and I’ve forgotten parts for days to no apparent disadvantage. Generally, this won’t free up a stuck pilot system on its own, but it will soften up most obstructions so that we can work ‘em out one way or another. If you can’t get the nasty stuff, lacquer thinner is an acceptable, although inferior substitute. Rinse the carburetor parts thoroughly in cold water after the tank dip to remove as much left over cleaner as Them are Good Carbs - part 2 (continued) possible. Spray the body and passages with WD 40 afterwards to remove any leftover water and to prevent corrosion. For all of this, wear a good set of safety goggles as carb cleaner in the eye can be very painful. To blowout the carburetor passages, use an attachment similar to the one pictured with at least 50 PSI of pressure and repeat what you did for the spay test, blocking the outside hole as you apply air pressure. Now retest with spray. Sometimes now all’s well, but often it ain’t. So now we go to step two. Locate a piece of multi-strand copper wire, about 14 gauge, strip a section, and pull off a single strand of wire. Measure various pieces of wire strands until you find a single strand that measures close to .014, just a little smaller than the standard pilot jet opening. Ignore all the warnings you’ve heard about putting anything into a jet now because this really works well and isn’t likely to damage the jet because of the relative softness of the thin strand of copper. This is also why we had to soften up the obstruction first. To make a pilot jet cleaning tool, first strip a piece of wire, about 14 gauge, and measure a strand with a caliper. You need a piece about .014 in diameter. Insert the piece of wire into the air screw hole and keep poking until the wire goes completely through the jet. You can tell when it does by how far it goes intO the carburetor body. Once it’s through the jet, turn the wire around a bit like a drain snake and then blowout the jet and passage first with a spray of aerosol carburetor cleaner and then compressed air. Retest now. Most often this does the trick, but there are harder cases. After cleaning out the factory plugged passageway, you’ll have to again block it off. A small allen setscrew works great for this job, and allows for future access if ever needed. If this isn’t a concern and an ultra permanent plug is desired, just use a high grade thread locker when installing. With a real toughie, you might have to use a very fine drill bit and a drill press with the carburetor firmly secured to the press base. Line the passage up very carefully as this time it’s very easy to go wrong and do irreparable damage. You’ll need a tiny #78 drill bit, and don’t expect to find one down at the hardware store. Try a specialty tool house. Another similar but easier option is drill out the jet entirely. In that case, you will need to install a new external jet. This is very easy because even carburetors made .with internal jets retrained the threads for the former jet. Just screw one in and you’re done. Sometimes even after freeing the jet, you still can’t get the system to flow properly. At this juncture it’s time to suspect the passage behind the jet is full of gunk. Also, if you do free up the system and it runs fine at first, but later begins acting up again, suspect the passage behind the jet after ruling out contamination from something like a rusty fuel system. The passage referred to here is the one behind the tiny silver colored plug on the rim of the carburetor intake. I 7 read somewhere this can be removed using a tiny drill bit and easy out, leaving the plug useable for reinsertion after cleaning. I never could get this to work well, and also don’t trust reinstalling a part that is just a simple interference fit. Here’s abetter way, one that will leave you with easy access years down the road if ever faced with another cleaning job. Here’s what you’ll need to open and close the blocked off pilot jet passageway, a 9/64” drill bit, 10/24 tap and matching allen setscrew. Take a 9/64” drill bit that is just slightly smaller than the passageway diameter and line it up centered with the carburetor plug. Be sure the carburetor body is. well secured to the drill press base. Drill out the plug; it will generally come loose and spin on the bit once it’s pierced. Now you can thoroughly clean out the passageway and then blowout remaining debris with both air and carburetor cleaner. Next, use a 10/24 tap to thread the opening about 1/4 inch into the passage and fit a matched allen head setscrew. That’s it! May all your carburetors carb, your generators gen, and your pistons... oh never mind. JUNE 2013 Viking Chapter AMCA, Inc.
