The Erin Luncheon
The annual Erin Luncheon was held on March 11 th and was a “sell-out” success again
this year! As always, it was a fabulous event filled with fun, music, laughter and the best
Irish Stew in Ottawa. The Luncheon, made possible through the support and friendship
of the Irish Society of the National Capital region, raised over $8,000 for the residents of
St. Patrick’s Home.
Special thanks to Irish Society members Bill Tobin, Jack McManus and Jim Dineen for
their excellent organizing and ticket selling abilities! Next year’s Erin Luncheon will take
place on Friday, March 10, 2006.

You, as a friend of our charitable Home, are at
the top of my “thanksgiving” list. W ithout your
generous support and concern, it would be
extremely difficult to provide the high quality care

A BIG THANK YOU goes to our major sponsors who ensured the
event was a success.
For Friends, Donors and Volunteers of St. Patrick’s Home of Ottawa
As you might know, these continue to be challenging times for our Not for Profit
Home. Because of a severe shortage in Provincial funding, and in keeping with
our Mission and Values, we have had to make the decision to significantly
exceed the Provincial allotment in order to properly care for our residents.
W e are proud of our 140 year legacy in this community and in our ability to
uphold our Mission and Values amid such severe funding restrictions. I hope
that you share this pride because your help has made it possible for us to
continue our tradition of compassionate care. Through your involvement in our
Lottery, Golf Tournament, Erin Luncheon, In Memoriam program and your
generous response to my letters requesting financial investment, we have been
able to stay true to our Mission and Values.
On behalf of our residents, thank you once again for your friendship and
support. I hope that I can continue to count on your patronage to help us
through these trying times.
God Bless,

Sr. Geraldine Daley: Spirit in Motion
For 21 years, Sr. Geraldine Daley has served as a Pastoral and Palliative
care volunteer for St. Patrick’s Home. Her joyful yet peaceful presence, her

sunny smile and words of wisdom and comfort have been of enormous benefit
to residents, their family members, staff, volunteers and Sisters alike.
Sr. Geraldine lives on the Home’s fourth floor with fifteen of her fellow Grey
Sisters of the Immaculate Conception. W hile she brings a loving presence to all
of the residents throughout the Home, her visiting assignment is to residents on
First Floor and Special Care. Further, as part of a team of 12 Palliative Care
volunteers, she willingly journeys with residents, families, staff and volunteers
I count my blessings everyday that I was able
to come to St. Pat’s to live at the time when I needed assistance.
I have a great bed, my meals, good friends and social activities,
daily mass and wonderful caregivers.

resident journeys through the dying process and “enters into the fullness of God.” One might think this is a
depressing or sad vocation. Sr. Geraldine would be quick to dispel this perception. “I am so grateful to do what
I do,” Sr. Geraldine comments. “Building relationships with residents, their loved ones, staff and volunteers is a
privilege and a great source of sustenance for me.” Sr. Geraldine further contends that she admires the love

of life that residents have, and that working with them is affirming and restorative.
In relation to easing the end of life transition for our residents, Sr. Geraldine quotes “God comes for the
young, but the old go to God.” She continues to be inspired by the expressions of faith, contentment and
acceptance that our residents experience before death. In partnership with a tremendously supportive staff, she
shares prayers, stories, gentle music and small expressions of comfort for residents in their time of need.
Family members often express their immense appreciation of Sr. Geraldine’s special gift during such a
difficult time. In turn, Sr. Geraldine asserts “I am equally appreciative to have been given the opportunity to assist

Planned Giving
“Planned giving” is an umbrella term that refers to gifts of life insurance, securities or a bequest. This type of gift,
sometimes called a Deferred Gift, is a unique way to make a substantial and lasting impact on the quality of resident
life at St. Pat’s.
Because a Planned Gift provides an opportunity for a donor to give beyond their lifetime, these types of gifts are
viewed as an ideal way to leave a lasting legacy to our Home. A gift of this nature will allow the Home to provide
high quality care for generations to come.
•
We’re celebrating an important Birthday this year.... St. Patrick’s Home is 140 years old. Established in
1865 as a house of refuge, it has evolved over the years to its present site on Riverside Drive, becoming
incorporated in 1996 and beginning the implementation of a resident and family-centred care model in 1997 .
•
Values Covenant: During orientation, all staff members participate in a commissioning ceremony, endeavouring
to ensure that the Home’s Mission and Core Values of Spirituality, Hospitality, Sacredness of Life, Justice, Growth
and Vision are understood, upheld and integrated into their day-to-day activities.
•
Volunteers are a BIG part of the St. Pat’s Family.....We are blessed to have 250 active volunteers from different
sectors of this community. Young adults, pensioners, students and youth, as well as corporations, are involved in
a multitude of areas throughout the Home that include Arts & Crafts, Beauty Salon, Bingo & Games, Board &
Committees, Clerical, Coffee Shop, Day Program, Entertainment, Escort, Friendly Visiting, Fundraising, Meal
Assistance, Second Round Shop, Physiotherapy, Pastoral Care, Tuck Shop, Walking Program and many other areas.
