+ Shaw Montessori Newsletter may /end of year 2016 We are the Shaw Stars + the Montessori Messenger keeping our wonderful Montessori community informed and recognizing the good works of the magical young minds, dedicated teachers and staff on our campus News & Notes: Principal Susan Engdall Greetings Shaw Montessori Stars! Well, here we are, our first year as a collective community under our belt. We have accomplished so much….installed beautiful gates, planted multiple fruit trees and playground shade trees, created a desert pollinator garden, and cultivated a thriving outdoor environment. All the while our Montessori babies grew a year older and more independent. Such amazing growth and change on all levels. Next school year our wonderful community will see many more changes on our campus as we create learning labs and wisely help our children understand the value of reducing, reusing and recycling by doing so daily in our classrooms, cafeteria and outdoor spaces. Plans also include a large garage door added to the side of our cafeteria to bring in the light and a view of our new human sundial in the entrance courtyard. The sundial will be a terrific interactive element to our outdoor space. We will also be building a habitat for desert tortoises. Hercules, an enormous desert tortoise roamed the Shaw campus and outdoor environment from 2012-2014 until his getaway at the height of mating season, leaving us broken hearted. We might not get Hercules back---but perhaps an offspring? We also plan to enhance the entrance to our school and add an amphitheater just outside of the library. Thank you parents, students, family and friends, for all of the support you have offered our school, our staff and each other, both seen and unseen. It is this kind of commitment that continues to grow Shaw Montessori as a great place for our children to be. Loads of research will tell you that your volunteer work and the time spent at your child’s school exponentially increases their positive view of school, its people, its academics, its values and its practice. We will do it all again next year beginning with Back to School Night on August 1st All the best, Principal Susan Engdall 2 + Making The Most of Shaw: “The first essential for the child’s development is concentration. The child who concentrates is immensely happy.” Dr. Maria Montessori PTA It’s been an amazing year! Thank you parents for your contributions to this year’s PTA events. I’d like to give a special thank you to my fellow PTA Officers: Sarah LaRoque, Bryan Hardie-Jorgenson, Leigh Ann Dolan, Melissa Griffis, Jessica Stewart, Katharine Santangelo, Jen Skinner, Danielle Martin, Kanika Jones, Shadi Mirza and Angela Boozer. Each and every one of our officers already has a full plate with work, school, and family but still they find the time to help our school in so many ways. With deep gratitude, Erin. http://phxschools.org/shaw-montessori/for-parents/pta/ Erin Krapf, Parent & PTA President SITE COUNCIL No matter how far we have to go, let's remember where we started. At this time last year, our teachers were pondering the Hamlet question. No, not "To be or not to be" but "To box or not to box". Because I'm sure that's what Shakespeare really meant. We may have ended last year in total upheaval, but we came together as a community to support our vision of one united campus, and we hit the ground running when it was approved. Teachers, staff, and parents worked throughout the summer to move onto one campus, letting us start school on August 5, 2015 with an easy transition. It may not have been pretty, but that didn't discourage us. One year later, through everyone's feedback, persistence, and heroic efforts, we've accomplished an amazing campus and stronger community. Thank you for taking this journey with us through the campus beautification project; ironing out issues with parking, drop-off, and pick-up; and fighting to keep the desegregation money that funds Shaw. I don't know about you, but I'm ready for a break. I hope everyone gets a much needed rest and returns to school in the fall re-energized so we can put you back to work, I mean, so we can enjoy our wonderful school. Stay safe, and see you soon! Cindy infuses our food with love, has a quick smile and knows every child's name! Cindy plans to take cruises & do some long overdue traveling. We wish you big fun in your retirement and we will miss you! 5 Lower – Middle – Upper: +Great Minds in the Classroom PreK – Kindergarten This has been a very special time for our school community. For the first time in many years, all of the children have been learning and working on the same campus together. It has been rewarding and quite powerful to see the former two campuses integrate into nine classrooms of Primary students who get to know and create with one another as they really had never the opportunity to do before. I see children helping one another, holding hands, sitting in the shade of the trees, and gently caring for the animals. What we have is the truest essence of Montessori, a children’s community. 6 1st through 6th Practical Life in the form of Big Trips! In the second week of May, our elementary & middle school students take a “Big Trip” that culminates the year’s studies. It is a wonderful learning experience that the children plan for the entire school year. Students are able to apply Practical Life skills that they’ve acquired through their Montessori years to a real life situation. They also have the opportunity to develop new skills & each student comes away with a new recognition & appreciation of his or her ability to make a meaningful contribution to the community. Parent chaperones are not encouraged unless absolutely necessary in order to give students the freedom to learn & grow on their own. The students are responsible for the planning, organizing, & decision-making. They select the location, which often is related to a current topic of study or student interest. The trips are partially funded by class fundraising projects that provide the experience of running a business as well as raising the funds for their end of year trip. There are also trip logistics to be made: transportation, reservations, menus, packing lists, & activities. Throughout this major project students are able to actively pursue their own interests & discover their own unique abilities with the support of their immediate community. 7th and 8th Students were able to put “real life” skills to use during their end-of-year Heroic Journey interviews. All interviews were conducted in front of a Council of Elders & were approximately 30 minutes in length. Students were called upon to reflect on lessons throughout the year & then show evidence of completion of a yearlong goal. Some students chose to learn a new language or conquer their fear of heights. Another student designed his own Sports Nutrition Cookbook. The Elders walked away with a much better understanding of what motivates a teen & teens were left with a greater understanding of themselves!! Students are off to New York City from May 9-13th. Our 8th Grade students have their Promotion Ceremony on Monday, May 23 at 6:00pm. . Student Corner: th Hey 8 Graders we are going to miss you! “Congratulations! Today is your day. Special thanks to parents & volunteers who have donated plants, seeds, paint, ideas, & much more! The ODE continues to be a place where children can have autonomy in doing what entices them in that moment. The process of DOING is so powerful & children are engaged in our natural space in so many ways. Digging & planting seeds continue to be favorite activities as well as petting & making salads for the rabbits, harvesting seeds, watering plants, drawing, looking for bugs, & investigating new sprouts. We also have two new garden beds in our space – a “butterfly garden” with plants such as rosemary, lavender, oregano, sun gold butterfly bush, globe mallow, dittany of Crete & Arizona milk weed to attract those sweet butterflies & a “bunny garden” filled with edible plants for the bunnies such as carrots, cilantro, & broccoli. Our community is so fortunate to have such a peaceful space & the experiences for our young Montessorians are without words! Again thank you for such a wonderful year in the garden! –Ms. Lauren and Ms. Cristina COACH’S CORNER This year has been loaded with learning and fun. Skills have ranged from personal/social units to sports/fitness. This spring PE students have worked on hand-eye coordination, scoops, cooperative games, soccer and softball. Time and time again students remind me of how much fun they have in PE and how they can’t wait until they come back for the next lesson. Our 7th/8th grade intermural sports teams have seen inter-district competition in basketball, soccer, softball and volleyball. Our students have represented our school well and we are excited to shine bright next year. Go Shaw Stars! – Coach Dunlop ART I like to reflect on how awesome the children at Shaw did in the art room this year. Most of our art curriculum was based on color: what it is, what is means, when & how to apply it. Students experienced art concepts that are seen in many college level curriculums. These concepts were made age-appropriate & students excelled in understanding & applying the concepts. They also dove into our school community to either raise money or beautify the campus, through art! They made birdhouses, a mural, decorated & assembled holiday cards, participated in fundraisers & created a Pop up Gallery. Outside of the school many children were involved in art shows around the valley making Shaw’s name more prominent in the “art scene”. I hope that all children bring with them what they’ve learned & continue to make wonderful art for all to enjoy. Have a great summer! - Ms. Conover - MUSIC NOTES The music world has been busy as we head towards summer. The instrumental & choral students hosted a Lunch Concert on April 27th. Various individuals also participated in one or both of the district honor festivals. Students will be preparing for their ensemble placement auditions as we head into May. In the general music world, recorder students are finishing their recorder karate program & will be writing their own songs. They will also be choosing their instruments for next year. Kindergarten through third grade has been learning about music history and is continuing to develop their music theory. We are already excited as we look towards next year.– Ms. Merrill - 11 MARK IT! Shaw 1914-1977 “Gus” Shaw received his degrees in education at Arizona State College in Flagstaff (Now NAU). His educational accomplishments were numerous: At Carver High he established & headed the PE department and was the Dean of Boys. Under his auspices he formed a powerful team that won 9 out of 10 games in 1951, was undefeated in 1952 and 1953; with 2 of his players named All-State, All-American & was recognized by the Press Box Association for his outstanding contribution to AZ athletics. When Carver High closed in 1954, he joined PESD #1 as Principal at Dunbar until 1967, & then Principal at Bethune until 1977. He is included in “Who’s Who in Education” 1951-1952 edition. In addition to being an exceptional Principal, he served his community selflessly & extensively by serving on the board or as a member of numerous civic organizations: The Foundation for the Blind, Phoenix Urban League, YMCA, Valley Big Brothers, Jane Wayland Center, Girl Scouts, AZ Towne Hall, Phoenix Housing Authority, National & Arizona Educational Association(s). Besides “Gus” Shaw’s reach & influence in education he was also noted for his service during WWII & as the VA Educational Training Officer. FOUNDER OF OUR SCHOOL’S APPROACH Dr. Maria Montessori (Maria Tecla Artemesia Montessori) 1870-1952 Dr. Montessori had many accomplishments just one being the Montessori Method. She became the first female physician in Italy upon her graduation from medical school in 1896. Shortly afterwards, she was chosen to represent Italy at two different women's conferences, in Berlin in 1896 & in London in 1900. In her medical practice, her clinical observations led her to analyze how children learn. Her method of education developed, based upon her scientific observations of children's almost effortless ability to absorb knowledge from their surroundings, as well as their tireless interest in the manipulation of materials. This simple but profound truth inspired Montessori's lifelong pursuit of educational reform, methodology, psychology, teaching, & teacher training—all based on her dedication to furthering the self-creating process of the child. She was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize three times—in 1949, 1950, and 1951. Her passion for education & peace live on in each child touched by the Montessori experience. Show your Shaw Montessori Pride. Shaw Montessori tee-shirts are now available. Please contact Ms. Chan to place your order. 13
