OPRHP issued a policy that by 4/1/07, all trail mileage will be determined by the use of GIS (Geographic Information System). Local clubs will be required to provide sponsors with digital map data for all funded trails. GPS-based mapping is currently the only acceptable method of providing the digital data needed. Trails without GPS-based data will lose their funding. Funding will not be reinstated until the time that a club re-applies for trail funding of the lost section and accompanied by proper GPS-bases trail data. New trail additions and rerouted trails will not be considered without the required GPS-based trail data. This guide is part of a NYSSA effort to facilitate the transition to GPS-based trail data through documented procedures, training methods, and technical support for local snowmobile organizations. The purpose of this guide is to provide specific information on the use of the Garmin GPSMAP 62stc and Delorme Topo North America 9 to map New York’s snowmobile trails. This guide will describe the application of these tools toward the above goals. It does not replace owner’s manuals that are provided with the GPS receiver and software. At various points, reference may be made to specific sections of those manuals. The basic operating instructions for GPS receivers and software should be obtained from owner's manuals. How to Use this Guide In the development of process described in this manual, an attempt was made to keep the steps non-technical. This guide will not cover basic operations of a computer that are needed such as creating file folders, re-naming files, or installing software. It is assumed that you already know these basic computer skills. There is a long list of details and steps. Many steps are logical and easily remembered, but a few are not so intuitive and easily forgotten. Menu names and whereabouts on the Garmin 62 Series handheld units and Delorme software may be different than previous version/models. Recommend Approach: Skim through this guide to get an idea of what is involved in the process. Read through the first 10 pages of the GPS receiver Owner’s manual to gain basic knowledge of the operation of your unit and skim the rest while using the unit Install the software and spend some time experimenting and using the built in “Help” and “User Guides”. In particular, become familiar with the functions of the Delorme Topo Draw tab features and tools. Read through this guide in sections, trying to accomplish what you read as you go. 4/1/2013 NYSSA Page |3 NYSSA Guide to Trail GPS Mapping with the Garmin GPSmap 62 Series and DeLorme Topo North America 9 Mapping Software Take some sample test tracks by walking around your neighborhood or parts of your trail. Then download to the computer and try all the processes on the data. Try the for-real recording of a couple segments of your trail and process them to completion. Follow the steps described as closely as possible. (The intent here is to avoid doing a lot of work incorrectly and then having to re-do it). The many steps involved are easy to forget over the year or between outings. If possible, keep your skills active by mapmaking and miscellaneous use of the GPS unit and software. This process uses only a fraction of the capabilities of these tools. Hardware and Software Specific hardware and software is being recommended here to achieve consistency of data submitted, reduce the overall effort involved in training, field work, and data preparation, as well as provide useful tools for club trail management. The selected hardware and software as well as the procedures described in this document allow use of this recreational grade equipment to achieve “near” map-grade accuracy. This is the main menu item that you will return to most often. The track log, active track or Current Track is a record of the most recent movement while tracking. Save Current Track as needed Clear Current Track as needed, before starting to map new section of trail. Save trail with the name of what they are, C3, S24, NYSSA 686 Etc. Note: due to limitations of the Garmin to PC interface software, all tracks, saved and/or active, are downloaded together (60 Series Garmin's). 62 Series Garmin's will only exchange the current track. Tracks can be separated and identified in the software but it is generally a good idea to have the GPS receiver cleared of saved tracks that are not relevant to the current trail that you plan to record. This saves the work of identifying tracks and cleanup after downloading and also speeds up the download process. All saved files may be deleted from the GPS receiver by pressing MENU when in the TRACKS screen, then selecting Delete all Saved and pressing ENTER, confirming the deletion. Always clear Track Log after saving a track. If you don’t the next time you save will create a duplicate track segment. A duplicate track is invisible on the map display and can cause confusing problems during the track editing process. Use rocker to highlight CURRENT TRACK and press ENTER Turning on the Track Log Use the rocker to highlight and select YES to the question, "Would you like to turn tracking on?". Once you do so, your movement is being logged. If Current Track has been cleared, the above message will appear. Track Manager Menu Saved Track Menu Saved Track Menu View of Saved Track (In Green) Press QUIT key when finished Making Waypoints Waypoints are data points or locations that you want to flag during your mapping expedition. At this time waypoints are not required for submission to OPRHP, but they may prove useful down the road when you need to resolve an issue during the data editing process. NYSSA suggests the following items may currently be of some interest for clubs to create waypoints for: Junctions Road Names at Crossings Points of Interest (Restaurants/Gas Stations) E-911 sign locations Culverts/Bridges Major Hazards All of these items could be used down the road for map making purposes or future inclusion to the data submission requirements. Press the Mark button on the front of the handheld Garmin GPS unit. Select Done on the screen and the waypoint is saved. If you wish to name your waypoint, use the Rocker to highlight the upper most field & Enter. Use the Rocker key and enter button to type once the keypad screen is displayed. The next pictures are an example of renaming waypoint 10 to CULVERT 5. Select Done when finished and the map screen will reappear. 4/1/2013 NYSSA Page |9 NYSSA Guide to Trail GPS Mapping with the Garmin GPSmap 62 Series and DeLorme Topo North America 9 Mapping Software First Screen Name Field Name Filled In Map With Waypoint Saving Tracks Click on Current Track in the Track Manager Click on Save Track Type in trail name using Rocker key to cover the character and ENTER key for selecting When Finished, use Rocker key to Highlight Done at the bottom and hit the ENTER key At this point and can choose to clear the current track by selecting YES or no. Saving Waypoints Waypoints are automatically saved individually in the unit’s memory. There is no secondary saving or achieving of waypoints for an active track (trail). 4/1/2013 NYSSA P a g e | 10 NYSSA Guide to Trail GPS Mapping with the Garmin GPSmap 62 Series and DeLorme Topo North America 9 Mapping Software General Guidelines GPS Data Capacity Garmin 60 Series Plan to SAVE and CLEAR the track at about 10 mile intervals. This is because the saved track will only keep the most significant 500. At 10 miles, 1000 points have been collected. The SAVE algorithm will discard excess points in a line to reduce the total points. Note: When downloading the track data to a PC, all active and saved tracks are downloaded. If the active log is not cleared, there will be a double image on the map and it may be difficult to edit later on. Be sure to turn on tracking at the beginning of a segment. It’s easy to forget. Again, turn off tracking at the end of a segment before SAVE and CLEAR. At an intersection, if you divert to another trail, end the current segment by entering SAVE and CLEAR on that track log. Garmin 62 Series The new Garmin is not limited like the older units are, saving up to 10,000 points in one track and up to 200 individually named tracks with high accuracy. Note: The newer Garmin will only download (via exchange) the current track. To download saved and archived tracks, see the import method. Be sure to turn on tracking at the beginning of a segment. It’s easy to forget. Again, turn off tracking at the end of a segment before SAVE and CLEAR With the new 62 series GPS units, it is recommended that an entire trail is recorded in one outing instead of saving multiple smaller tracks of around 7-10 miles each. This will limit other restrictions in the editing program. Logbook In addition to the Receiver, it is recommended to carry a notebook like a 3”x5” spiral bound type that can fit into a pocket. It may be useful to start a log entry with some notes about the day, time, place, weather, and route plan. This information is often very valuable when later processing the data. This is especially true when re-taking data on the same trail and later finding some difference from the earlier data. It may work well for some to use a digital voice recorder to quickly collect log information. Add a logbook entry each time you save a track segment and/or waypoints, to help in later identifying the segment. In addition to waypoint items listed in appendix f., you may want to create waypoints and note log entry for other features of the trail such as hazards, areas needing maintenance, or entry/exit of wood lots and other locations that you want to include on a club map or for reference when editing the data. 4/1/2013 NYSSA P a g e | 11 NYSSA Guide to Trail GPS Mapping with the Garmin GPSmap 62 Series and DeLorme Topo North America 9 Mapping Software Data Processing and Editing The first steps in processing the track and waypoint data are to download the data to a PC. CAUTION! Tracks cannot be separately downloaded (exchange method) from the Garmin GPSmap 60 Series receivers. All saved tracks and the active track log are downloaded. If the active track has been saved in the GPS receiver but not cleared, it will result in a nearly duplicate track being downloaded. This duplicate track will make editing difficult. Be sure the active track is cleared after saving it in the GPS receiver so that only saved tracks are downloaded. REMINDER! Only the Current Track in the Garmin GPSmap 62 Series receivers will download (exchange method). Saved or archived tracks will have to be imported. Downloading Data to DeLorme Topo North America 9 USB Connection (Exchange Method) DeLorme Topo is the primary tool for editing and assembling track data. It also serves to prepare the text data file in the correct format for conversion to GIS compatible data. Connect the USB cable to the Garmin hand-held GPS unit and your PC. The GPS receiver will power on through the USB cable. The GPS screen will ask you if you would like to go to mass storage, use the Rocker key and highlight No. Press the Enter key. The topo map will appear on the screen of the GPSmap 62stc. Start the Delorme software. Once Delorme is open, if this is the first time you use it, the program will ask you to open a project or create a new project. Name the project accordingly. A suggestion would include the year, Club name and/or trail name. If for some reason you open the program without assigning a project name, your will be able to name or rename it once you go to save your work. USB Connection (File Import Method) The GPS screen will ask you if you would like to go to mass storage, use the Rocker key and highlight Yes. Press the Enter key. A USB connection symbol will then appear on the screen of the GPSmap 62stc. Start the Delorme software and open your project as described above. 4/1/2013 NYSSA P a g e | 12 NYSSA Guide to Trail GPS Mapping with the Garmin GPSmap 62 Series and DeLorme Topo North America 9 Mapping Software Coordinate System and Units of Measure Settings Use pull-down Options Menu in the top menu bar to make setting as shown below. Select Garmin/Garmin Setting should auto-fill in In the Comm Port field use the drop down menu and select USB. Select OK when finished. In the Receive from Device field, click the drop down menu and select Tracks. If you are downloading Waypoints, select Waypoints. Click Next to continue 4/1/2013 NYSSA P a g e | 16 NYSSA Guide to Trail GPS Mapping with the Garmin GPSmap 62 Series and DeLorme Topo North America 9 Mapping Software The Save as field auto-populates with User Map Data - Track Click Next when finished with these three items in the Exchange Wizard. 4/1/2013 The Source area auto-populates with the All Tracks on Device toggled. You cannot change this selection. Destination Track File auto-populates with < new > and if not use the drop down menu to select it. New Track File description field allows you to name the track (or trail) you are importing into Delorme. Track Label is optional and not needed at this time. It can be altered later when you edit your track draw file. Press Receive from Device to proceed with transferring your track from your GPS unit. After you press Receive from Device, a Download Tracks progress box pops up. If an error message appears and says it is have trouble locating the COMM port, reload the Garmin USB drives and/or check that the Interface menu in the GPSmap 62 is set to Garmin Spanner. NYSSA P a g e | 17 NYSSA Guide to Trail GPS Mapping with the Garmin GPSmap 62 Series and DeLorme Topo North America 9 Mapping Software Click OK when data exchange is complete and the box appears. Then click Finish If you have saved track data in the GPS unit for two passes, they will appear as two tracks. If you have saved track data from another trail, it will also appear. Simply repeat the download for each other trail with the appropriate file named for that trail. It will be necessary to delete the inappropriate trail track data from each file. This can be done quite easily and will be discussed under ‘Editing the Track Data’. This nuisance is due to the “feature” that saved tracks cannot be individually downloaded. Downloading Tracks (Import File Method) The method for importing saved and archived tracks from the new Garmin 62stc is different than with the older Garmin units. The following method will be used for saved track as well as for importing Waypoints into Delorme Topo 9. Got to the Draw Tab Click the Import Box 4/1/2013 NYSSA P a g e | 18 NYSSA Guide to Trail GPS Mapping with the Garmin GPSmap 62 Series and DeLorme Topo North America 9 Mapping Software Below is the sequence of windows that opens as you make your way to where the GPS data is filed on the Garmin 62stc. You are looking for the GPX folder on the Garmin. Top level Garmin Directory Select Garmin File Folder The Data is Filed in the GPX File Folder Click on Current Folder if Downloading Current Track Saved Tracks are on the upper level of the GPX Folder (ex. Track_17-FEB…) You can Import each saved track one at a time If there is an ERROR not being able to communicate with the Garmin, you probably did not select to use the Garmin as a Mass Storage Device. Unplug the Garmin from the computer, let the Garmin shut off, then reconnect the Garmin to your computer and select YES on the Garmin when it asks if you want to use it as a Mass Storage Device. 4/1/2013 NYSSA P a g e | 19 NYSSA Guide to Trail GPS Mapping with the Garmin GPSmap 62 Series and DeLorme Topo North America 9 Mapping Software When importing a track to see if there is extra data contained within the imported data, the Count column is a good place to start. For one solid track to be imported, the count should be 1. Current001 track has a count of 3 and upon examination there was 2 additional tracks contained within the data. These can be edited out later. When the track is final edited, the count should only be 1. Downloading Waypoints (Import File Method) Waypoints are also on this upper GPX Folder (ex. Waypoints_07-FEB…) Waypoint file is automatically created and cannot be saved (current only) 4/1/2013 NYSSA P a g e | 20 NYSSA Guide to Trail GPS Mapping with the Garmin GPSmap 62 Series and DeLorme Topo North America 9 Mapping Software Above are the test Waypoints from the same track, imported separately. Note using the More/Less button in the cluster of buttons at the right of the track names opens a detailed list of items related to the track or waypoints you are working with. Saved names for Waypoint descriptions do transfer in (ex. RT 21) Note the Count column, 10 Waypoints were imported, indicated by the count being 10 File / Copy To / New Draw layer will copy your Waypoint file to a Draw File layer for editing. An important note here: After initial set of waypoints are downloaded, two steps are required. 1. Clear the waypoints from the GPS receiver. This avoids duplicate waypoints being downloaded later when more are added. See Making Tracks for how to clear waypoints. 2. Before appending new waypoints, edit the old waypoints in DeLorme TOPO to have the proper index number as described below under Editing Waypoints. If this is not done, there will be old and new waypoints with the same number displayed. Downloading Waypoints (Exchange Method) Downloading waypoints is a similar process to that of downloading tracks in the exchange. Select Waypoints as the Object Type on the initial DeLorme Exchange screen (pg 15). Download the waypoints as a new Waypoint file. Ex.name it WPTSC7D for a trail C7D. In the case where waypoints from more than one trail are downloaded from the GPS receiver, it will be necessary to delete the unnecessary waypoints from each Waypoint Draw layer file, since all the waypoints are contain in the original downloaded Waypoint file. They 4/1/2013 NYSSA P a g e | 21 NYSSA Guide to Trail GPS Mapping with the Garmin GPSmap 62 Series and DeLorme Topo North America 9 Mapping Software can be deleted in groups so it’s not too difficult. Keep the waypoints for one given trail in separate draw layer files. These trail waypoints can later be submitted with the descriptive data from the logbook added. Concurrent Trails When one of the trails runs concurrently with another trail, it has two segments. Treat each segment as a separate trail using a letter suffix, like a & b, to give them unique names such as trail C7Da and trail C7Db. Each segment will get its own draw file and output file. Editing in Delorme North America Topo 9 File Prep before Editing - Track to Draw File After downloading your track from the GPS unit, it is stored in DeLorme as a "track" file. It is recommended to convert your Track file to a Draw File Layer. This will enable you to make multiple Draw files from your original data with lower risk of deleting something valuable in your original Track file, such as a second trail that was recorded during the same mapping outing. You will then be able to save two (or more) Draw files and edit them each to only contain a single Trail. To make a Draw File: click the Draw tab click the File button Note: It is important to note how DeLorme files are saved. A "project" is the upper most file type/name your work is saved under. The TOPO project is saved and it preserves settings, display options, and the list of tracks & draw files. The draw files are saved separately and can be shared with other DeLorme products or other named projects. If a change is made to the draw file in another named project, it will be present in all other projects and DeLorme Products that reference that draw file. 4/1/2013 NYSSA P a g e | 22 NYSSA Guide to Trail GPS Mapping with the Garmin GPSmap 62 Series and DeLorme Topo North America 9 Mapping Software Click on the Track name you just imported into Delorme. Note the column "Type" which shows if a file is a Track File or a Draw File. (ex. Trail NYSSA 686) Two clicks will toggle the Track to be Active. If not active, you cannot work with the file. If the file Lock button is toggled on (black check), you cannot save any changes. For Tracks (or Waypoints) Click on Copy To Click on Draw (shown below), this will convert the Track file to a Draw file. A new Draw Layer is created at the top of the file list. You can edit the name later. (ex. DrawLayer001) 4/1/2013 NYSSA P a g e | 23 NYSSA Guide to Trail GPS Mapping with the Garmin GPSmap 62 Series and DeLorme Topo North America 9 Mapping Software The track and waypoint data that you have downloaded should now be converted to Draw Files. Each draw file can be thought of as a transparent film or layer with the track or waypoint data on it. As we need to have it, all waypoints for a trail will be on one draw layer and the singular trail track will be on one draw layer. You will have additional Draw layers for each additional trail (and trail waypoints) you have in your local trail system. (Note: If you wish to edit your original Track file and choose not to transfer it into a Draw file, editing and data export processes are the same for both files types.) Layers (or Draw files) can be edited one at a time. The layers may be turned on and off individually or all displayed together. Draw Tab To see and manage the Draw layer files: Click the Draw tab Click File… The check box in front of each layer turns the display of that layer on. Uncheck this box to make it invisible. Only one layer may be edited at a time. That is selected under Active. Checking the box under the Lock column prevents accidental edits to a finished layer. Note the layer Draw File location under Directory. It is prudent to use Windows Explorer to make backup copies of these files initially and after they are edited. The safest would be to save them on a USB flash drive (or "stick"). 4/1/2013 NYSSA P a g e | 24 NYSSA Guide to Trail GPS Mapping with the Garmin GPSmap 62 Series and DeLorme Topo North America 9 Mapping Software When editing; Uncheck the display of waypoints and tracks (trails) you are not editing. An exception is when having these items as visible aids in editing. Initially having everything turned on may be too much clutter. Toggle the trail you want to edit, active. Ex. NYSSA686. All other tracks and waypoints have been toggled off. Click Done. Saving the Data: There are many different ways to save your data. Click any of the Blue disk buttons or Click the save button in the Draw tab or Select the Map Files tab as above. Click File and choose Save (this will only save the trail file that is checked) Accept the offer to save the draw files Upon exiting DeLorme, if you have not saved your data the above Exit screen will appear 4/1/2013 NYSSA P a g e | 25 NYSSA Guide to Trail GPS Mapping with the Garmin GPSmap 62 Series and DeLorme Topo North America 9 Mapping Software Editing Trails Several edit techniques will be discussed: - Selecting draw items - Moving individual points - Splitting a track - Deleting a track segment - Joining a track - Filling in a short segment Selecting Draw Items Click the Draw tab. Click Done if the Draw File window is open. This window should appear: The tracks have been colored differently to better identify each. Here we have the intersection of 3 trails: C3 (Red), NYSSA674 (Pink) & NYSSA686 (Blue). In this situation, we want to clean up where the trail intersection meets. In the case of C3 and NYSSA 686, the corners were cut short during the data collecting process. We are going to edit the end points to intersect at the "true" Junction point. There may be cases where trails have glitch points or areas and this same method can be used to move the points back into position. Click the selection arrow in the tool box. Selection is a little tricky because DeLorme has built a lot of functions into the left mouse button. 4/1/2013 NYSSA P a g e | 26 NYSSA Guide to Trail GPS Mapping with the Garmin GPSmap 62 Series and DeLorme Topo North America 9 Mapping Software There are two levels of track selection. Track Select and Track Point Select. If you click right on the track you will probably hit a point and it will be selected as well as the track. We don’t want that yet. To just select the track, click once about 1/8 inch away from the track. If a point turns red you were too close. Hit the Escape key and try again. Or try holding the shift key and click directly on the track. This avoids selecting track points. (Using the shift key when selecting allows multiple selections, so be careful not to click more than once when holding shift.) If you are equally near the other track then a second click (no shift) will toggle selection to the other track. Select the blue track. The track points are all violet boxes. (No red or green track points) Now the track looks like this: Now it gets a bit tricky if you are near to a track, the second click opens a track label box with the track length. Just hit the Escape key to get rid of it. If that doesn't work, left click the label then press the Delete key on the keyboard. Another (longer) method is to Right Click with the pointer over the track label to get to the Manage Draw menus as shown to the right. Select Delete Draw Object and the label is deleted. Click the Green Undo Button if you delete something in error. 4/1/2013 NYSSA P a g e | 27 NYSSA Guide to Trail GPS Mapping with the Garmin GPSmap 62 Series and DeLorme Topo North America 9 Mapping Software Moving Individual Track Points Let’s fix the trail end points to intersect at the "true" trail Junction. Zoom in and click right on point your want to edit (or move). Point selection looks like this. Click the end point with the Right mouse button and move it to its new location. You can also move the point by using the keyboard arrow keys. This same procedure can be used on any point in the track that needs to me moved. Below the end point of NYSSA 686 has been moved as well as the second point: As you see, a red point is the selected point and if you were wondering, the green point indicates the previous point and shows the direction of travel, green to red. 4/1/2013 NYSSA P a g e | 28 NYSSA Guide to Trail GPS Mapping with the Garmin GPSmap 62 Series and DeLorme Topo North America 9 Mapping Software Now to correct the intersection point for the C3 trail, we will have to utilize many of the previous steps that have been outlined in separate descriptions. Go to the Draw Tab / File Button to expand out the trail file list Uncheck the C3 Lock Box to unlock the draw layer for editing. Toggle C3 to be Active so it can be selected for editing. Only one track Draw layer can be active at one time. 4/1/2013 Click Done when finished with the previous steps From the main Draw tab menu, make sure the selector tool is toggled Click near the C3 Trail to select the trail segment Select the point to be moved (the box will appear around it) Holding the left mouse key down, drag the point toward the end point of NYSSA 686. When you release the mouse key, the point will snap into alignment with the end point of NYSSA 686 (even though NYSSA 686 is not active). Remember to save your work often so you don't lose your hard work. NYSSA P a g e | 29 NYSSA Guide to Trail GPS Mapping with the Garmin GPSmap 62 Series and DeLorme Topo North America 9 Mapping Software Splitting a Track Select the track to work on. The track points should all turn to pink Select the point in the track at the location you want to break the track into 2 segments. That point should turn red. Press Ctrl-B to Break the track. The track is now split at the selected point. If you look at your track file detail page the track count will increase to 2. If you have problems remembering "hot keys" such as Ctrl-B, the below method can be used. Once selecting the track, click a second time on the point your want to break, a box will appear around the point. Right click the mouse and the Manage Draw Dialog box will appear. Select Break Line, note the trail is highlighted a different color using this method but the results are the same. 4/1/2013 NYSSA P a g e | 30 NYSSA Guide to Trail GPS Mapping with the Garmin GPSmap 62 Series and DeLorme Topo North America 9 Mapping Software Deleting a Track Segment Select the track to Delete. The track points should all turn to pink. Note: If only one point is highlighted, when you hit the Delete Key, only the select point will be deleted. With the track segment highlighted to delete, Press the Delete key on your Keyboard. The track segment will be erased as shown below. An alternative method is to delete the track segment using the Manage Draw function. Right click the mouse and the Manage Draw Dialog box will appear. Select Delete Draw Object, note the trail is highlighted a different color using this method but the results are the same. 4/1/2013 NYSSA P a g e | 31 NYSSA Guide to Trail GPS Mapping with the Garmin GPSmap 62 Series and DeLorme Topo North America 9 Mapping Software Joining Track Segments Hold the shift key and select each track. A box should appear around each track. You can also drag the pointer over both segments at one time, to grab both tacks. Press Ctrl-J to join them. After Joining, it’s one track again (picture right) An alternative method is to use is the Manage Draw, Join Lines function. (picture below) Select both track segments as before, then right click your mouse to open the dialog box and select Join Lines. Ensure the count on the track has gone back to 1, if not there may be an extra segment. 4/1/2013 NYSSA P a g e | 32 NYSSA Guide to Trail GPS Mapping with the Garmin GPSmap 62 Series and DeLorme Topo North America 9 Mapping Software Filling in a Short Segment In the example below, satellite coverage may have been poor or something happened between saving trail segments and a portion of the track is missing. Ex: A section of NYSSA 686 is missing as the trail follows Fleishman Rd., which is a seasonal/limited access road. Use maximum zoom if possible (above is one out from max, to see the missing area). Click the Line Draw tool, middle left button in the left hand Tools box of 6 buttons. With the Line Tool active, select the end point of one segment (left mouse). Continue to use the left mount key to indicate points down the path to create the missing trail segment. When at the last point, click the end point of the other segment. In the below example 7 points were used to create the missing trail segment. 4/1/2013 NYSSA P a g e | 33 NYSSA Guide to Trail GPS Mapping with the Garmin GPSmap 62 Series and DeLorme Topo North America 9 Mapping Software The next step is to join all three segments and create one continuous track. Click the Select button in the Tools Tray Left mouse click so you can drag a box over an area that contains all the track segments One you release the mouse button, light gray boxes will appear around each of the 3 segments. Join all 3 segments: Ctrl-J or Right Mouse/Manage Draw/Join Lines The 3 segments are now joined to make one continuous track. The new singular track should now be one color as shown to the right. 4/1/2013 NYSSA P a g e | 34 NYSSA Guide to Trail GPS Mapping with the Garmin GPSmap 62 Series and DeLorme Topo North America 9 Mapping Software Merging Track & Draw Files It will be necessary to merge multiple track or draw files as some point to create one continuous track of your trail. This task becomes more evident as trails are longer and multiple shorter tracks are recorded. The same method can be applied to draw files, but a draw file has to be created first. Import track files as needed. Name one track file to the appropriate Trail designation (ex. C3) From the Draw tab, you should see all the tracks you imported. (example: tracks have been renamed Track_A, Track_B, & C3 Track_03-MAR...) Click the More button at the right side, in the group of function buttons Select the first secondary track file you wish to merge with your main track file In the lower expanded more menu, right click to open the Copy To menu Then select the main track file you wish to merge with (ex. C3 Track_03-MAR...) Repeat the Copy To step for subsequent tracks you wish to merge, to create your complete trails' track file. 4/1/2013 NYSSA P a g e | 35 NYSSA Guide to Trail GPS Mapping with the Garmin GPSmap 62 Series and DeLorme Topo North America 9 Mapping Software In this example, 2 secondary track files have been merged with the main C3 file. Note that now the track count has increase to 3, meaning there are 3 separate track segments in the file. Clicking on the newly merged track file, details about each segment will appear in the lower menu which is opened with the More button. The Less button closes this additional detail menu. Click Done to return to the main Draw menu. To complete the track merge, you will utilize many of Delorme's editing functions as described in previous sections. Delete unneeded points Add short segments Join segments The above steps can also be used to move your track files into one consolidated track file. The difference is that the data from the originating files is deleted and moved. The track count will be 0 and that file will contain none of the original imported GPS data. A good order of housekeeping would be to delete the track file(s) with counts of 0. 4/1/2013 NYSSA P a g e | 36 NYSSA Guide to Trail GPS Mapping with the Garmin GPSmap 62 Series and DeLorme Topo North America 9 Mapping Software Summary The track data must all be from the same trail and when finished, will represent the entire length of trail a club is responsible for. Any data remaining from other trails must be deleted from this trail’s draw layer. When trail data is exported for submission, it will be saved one draw file at a time and the file must be free of all data except the subject trail. In many cases, the trail data will need to be saved by County. Steps to split the data by County or area of the Local Sponsor will be described in a later section. It is easier at times when out on the trail to obtain track data from several nearby trails. For example, if data from three trails is in the GPS receiver then the data is downloaded three times to files named for each of the three trails. Then the above techniques are used to clip out the trail(s) that do not belong to each file. This only takes a few minutes and may save hours of field work. When multiple tracks are downloaded, DeLorme assigns a track number label that repeats along the trail. This needs to be deleted. (If not, you will have to delete them during the text file editing) Click on or near any one of the track labels (may take 2 clicks) to open a text box. Delete the contents. Hit ENTER All the labels on that track are deleted It is important in the above steps to delete the label content. The selected label will disappear if a ‘space’ is typed but the undesired data point will remain in the system for the ‘space’ character. Use the Delete key followed by ENTER. As each trail track is edited you will need to go into the DRAW/ File…list to make the track you want to edit visible and active. Check the box and the Active circle. You may wish to lock finished track. If a track won’t select, check that it is active and unlocked. When all tracks are cleaned /joined, you should turn on the display of all trail draw file layers to be sure that all trails are complete and there are not any gaps at trail junctions. Minor touchups may be needed. Be sure all labels and other extraneous items are removed. Select each trail and note the mileage that appears. Record the mileage for each trail for future reference and entry in the trail’s cover file. Note: You will need to make the trail’s draw layer active to select it. After some editing, it is suggested that you do a Map Files /File/ Save. Sometimes when saving, the file is not closed until the program is shutdown. If the computer were to experience a problem and hang, the saved files might be lost. It’s a nuisance, but I recommend exiting and restarting the DeLorme TOPO program when a significant amount of editing work has been saved, this closes the saved files. You may also save a print image as a JPEG. It may be helpful to have this image to AID in checking the data during processing and after ArcView entry. 4/1/2013 NYSSA P a g e | 37 NYSSA Guide to Trail GPS Mapping with the Garmin GPSmap 62 Series and DeLorme Topo North America 9 Mapping Software Editing Waypoints There are two basic steps; deleting unneeded waypoints and labeling waypoints with an index. Deleting Waypoints Waypoints that are from another trail need to be removed as well as unneeded waypoints. To delete waypoints: Select the Draw tab. Then click the Select tool, the arrow, and click on the waypoint. A box will appear around the waypoint. Press Delete. Multiple waypoints may be selected by holding the shift key while selecting several points or by left mouse dragging a box around waypoints to be deleted. The following screen shot shows multiple waypoints selected ready for delete, but not all. Labeling Waypoints It will be necessary to add information about each waypoint that has been recorded in the logbook. Since the default waypoint numbers assigned by the GPS receiver will repeat when new data is taken, it will be necessary to assign a unique waypoint label or index number. A suggested index format to use is mmddyy###. An example would be waypoint # 034 recorded on 11/23/05 will get an index 112305034. An alternative, a unique label name describing the waypoint can be used. As described in a later section, the waypoint data for a track will be exported as a text file that will consist only of the coordinate, the index number, and a symbol. To edit the waypoint labels... Zoom in if necessary to separate waypoints. Left click twice on the waypoint. That should open the waypoint label box as below. Click to the left of the existing number and add the date or name description. Hit Enter Waypoint Labels can also be named during the mapping process when creating the waypoint in the GPS handheld unit. 4/1/2013 NYSSA P a g e | 38 NYSSA Guide to Trail GPS Mapping with the Garmin GPSmap 62 Series and DeLorme Topo North America 9 Mapping Software Exporting and Preparing Data to Submit Exporting Data (General) Export One Trail (Track or Draw file) or Set of Waypoints at a time. This additional information about data is often referred to as metadata. For this purpose, Excel forms have been prepared to provide a standard form. Download the Excel cover file forms from the NYSSA website in the Member Menu area. http://www.nysnowmobiler.com/trail-info/gps-program Follow the links to GPS information, forms, and documentation. The files are WayointCover.xls and TrailCover.xls After opening the file in Excel, perform a “Save As”, naming the file the same as the trail data file and append an M to end of the file name. Example: for trail data file TC7D645112205, the cover or metadata file would be named TC7D645112205M. The same for the waypoint Excel cover file… just append an M to the end of the waypoint data filename. Completing these cover files should be self-explanatory. Instructions are provided within the file. Printing Maps Printed maps should be included with submitted data. As the specific requirements mature, guidelines for required scale and detail will be provided as a Data Submission Information Sheet on the NYSSA web site. Printing is done from the Print Tab in the lower menu bar. 4/1/2013 NYSSA P a g e | 43 NYSSA Guide to Trail GPS Mapping with the Garmin GPSmap 62 Series and DeLorme Topo North America 9 Mapping Software Preparation of Data for Local Sponsor Additional steps are needed to prepare data for submission through your local sponsor. It is assumed this applies to funded trails only which have accountability thought the local sponsor. The two procedures are: 1. First, when the trail in question is located in more than one county, trail data must be separated by county (or in some cases by town). Otherwise this step may be skipped. DeLorme TOPO will be used to split the data by County or Town. 2. Second, the data needs to be prepared in a format which is compatible with ArcView GIS data systems. This format is referred to as shapefile data. A freeware program available from The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will be used. The program is called DNR Garmin or DNR GPS. Instructions for downloading and use are provided in the section “Preparing ArcView Shapefile Data” below. Separating the Trail Data by County Sponsor If your club has a funded trail crossing a County line, you will need to submit separate data files for the portion of the trail contained in each County, to each respective Local Sponsor. Import the full track (trail) data into DeLorme Create 2 different Draw Layers (one for each County) Edit the Trail for one County, leaving a small section (1/16 - 1/8 mile in length) of the trail into the next County to ensure both files will be able to be joined later on by personnel in the office of OPRHP Snowmobile Unit. Edit the second Draw Layer for the track in the other County. Again leave a small section of trail into the next County. Label the files with the appropriate County abbreviation as described in the naming convention. Follow the file naming convention as described in appendix b. Where the local sponsor is a Town, it may be necessary to waypoint the location trail crossing of Town borders since the DeLorme Topo does not display town borders. 4/1/2013 NYSSA P a g e | 44 NYSSA Guide to Trail GPS Mapping with the Garmin GPSmap 62 Series and DeLorme Topo North America 9 Mapping Software Preparing ArcView Shapefile Data Minor Edits to the DeLorme output Text file The Delorme exported text file needs to be slightly modified to be ready for DNRGarmin. - Go to the folder where the exported data was saved. - Using Notepad, make the following changes. As exported (With Trail Label) Modified The file samples here were shortened to show both ends of the file. With care, not to delete the numeric data, replace BEGIN LINE with zone, xdata, ydata Page down through the list of trail coordinates. There should be no other BEGIN LINE statements. If another BEGIN LINE, data, END sequence is found, that means there are two trail segments and that implies an error was made in preparing the data. As you scroll down the list, it should be clean as above right except longer. Move the cursor to the left of the E of END (or to the left of the comma at the end of the coordinate data). Hit Delete key several times as there is a hidden character after the END. If you have left in a track label, it appears at the end and also needs to be deleted. You could also highlight the extra info and drag down then press the delete key. Save the file using Save As, adding prep to the file name, and saving in DNRprep if you are using the folder structure suggested in appendix a. 4/1/2013 NYSSA P a g e | 45 NYSSA Guide to Trail GPS Mapping with the Garmin GPSmap 62 Series and DeLorme Topo North America 9 Mapping Software Download DNRGarmin or DNRGSP (free software) Follow this link: DNRGarmin or paste the following into your browser: http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/mis/gis/tools/arcview/extensions/DNRGarmin/DNRGarmin.html Page down to the Download Program section for DNR Garmin 5.4.1 (9/22/2008) This version will work with ArcView 9.x versions. Consult with your local sponsor to find out what version of ArcView your County Mapping department uses. File size is 11.5 MB. If your County is using ArcView 10.0 or 10.1, you may have to use DNRGSP which is described below. (DNR Garmin did work for ArcView 10.0, tested Jan 2013) Go to the folder where DNRGarmin was down loaded. Click on the zipped file dnrgarmin44setupto expand the file and run the program dnrgarminsetup. Accept defaults. The icon should be now be on the desktop. The track log or active track is a record of the most recent movement while tracking is turned on. Saved tracks are compact labeled copies of the track log. When a track is saved the data is screened and compressed to 500 points or less. Little information is lost but the file is smaller. Note: a maximum of 20 tracks can be saved. See available number at bottom of Tracks Menu screen. Then CLEAR to clear active track log ready for a new track. Choose SETUP See above screen on right Wrap when full -unchecked Record method - Distance Interval .01 mi. Highlight Interval and press Enter. Set by ‘rocker and enter’ typing. Then select OK. Note: This choice of interval (.01 mi.) is a compromise of the number of data points collected and the ability to resolve trail detail. By using distance as criteria, it gives more control and is independent of rate of travel. Note: due to limitations of the Garmin 60 series to PC interface software all tracks, saved and active, are downloaded together. They can be separated and identified in the software but is generally a good idea to have the GPS receiver clear of saved tracks that are not relevant to the current trail that you plan to record. This saves the work of identifying tracks and cleanup after downloading and also speeds up the download process. All saved files may be deleted from the GPS receiver by pressing MENU when in the TRACKS screen. Then selecting Delete all Saved and pressing ENTER and confirming the delete. IMPORTANT! Always clear Track Log after saving a track. If you don’t the next time you save will create a duplicate track segment. A duplicate track is invisible on the map display and can cause confusing problems during the track editing process. 4/1/2013 NYSSA P a g e | 59 NYSSA GUIDE TO TRAIL GPS MAPPING SUPPLIMENT With DeLorme Earthmate PN-60 AND DeLorme Topo North America 9 Mapping Software Release 2014.1 NYSSA Guide to Trail GPS Mapping Supplement with DeLorme PN-60 and DeLorme Topo North America 9 Mapping Software DeLorme PN-60 Setup Procedure The following settings should be used for mapping snowmobile trails.
