BUT THERE’S NO QUESTION OF ITS SPOT-ON ACCURACY IN RECOUNTING THE FOUR-DAY DETAIL-PERFECT CELEBRATION AND NUPTIALS OF TODD FISCUS AND CERON ON NEW YEAR’S EVE IN NEW YORK CITY. IN SCOPE, ATTENTION TO AESTHETIC AND OVERWHELMING WARMTH AND GENEROSITY OF SPIRIT, THIS WEDDING WAS AN UNFORGETTABLE EVENT. BY KAREN MUNCY. PHOTOGRAPHY DONNA VON BRUENING. IT TAKES A VILLAGE – THE CAST OF CHARACTERS. Two grooms: Todd, one of the premier event planners in the United States; Todd Events is headquartered in Dallas. Ceron, renowned hairdresser with a single moniker and a very stylish man about town; Ceron Salon is based in Houston. 13 Bridesmaids: Seven of Todd’s favorite girls from Dallas + six of Ceron’s best girlfriends from Houston. Dallas: Brooke Hortenstine, Cindy Rachofsky, Suzanne Droese, Lucy Wrubel, Laura Franks, Jennifer Harris, Tracy Madans. Houston: Becca Cason Thrash, Mary Beth Aspromonte, Karen Mayell, Holly Moore, Lindsey Love, and Kelli Blanton (who could not make it to the wedding due to a family emergency). because of all my business contacts there. We went up over the summer and chose The Glasshouses for the location, and again two months in advance for our tasting with the incredible Peter Callahan catering team. We wanted to go old-school classic — lobster thermador, waiters in white jackets. The color theme was inspired by a spur-of-the-moment visit to the new Ralph Lauren store. It was so spectacular — black, gold and cream, very masculine — and Ceron says, ‘This is what I want our wedding to look like.’” The iconic Carlyle was the hotel of choice, but the couple wanted a modern setting for the dinner, ceremony and reception. The Glasshouses in the Chelsea Arts Tower provided a dramatic venue, with floor-to-ceiling windows “where everyone could see the city,” explains Todd. FIRST THINGS FIRST. GETTING THE LOOK. WHAT ARE YOU DOING NEW YEAR’S. FINISHING TOUCHES. Todd: “Ceron’s proposal (in December 2012) caught me off-guard. We had only been together two years. I said ‘yes’ in front of 70 people. Planning the wedding became something we did together — it was really a growing point for us.” Ceron: “It was December 19, 2012, at 8:19 pm, to be exact. I was so nervous. It was our holiday party; it was getting late, and Suzanne Droese was about to leave, so I showed her the box … She was the only one that knew before. I apologized to Todd’s father for not asking him first. Not a dry eye in the house.” “December 31 was the first and only choice for the nuptials. We both hate New Year’s Eve because there’s never anything to do,” Todd says. “It’s the one week in the year when I usually don’t take business. Since Broadway is shuttered that night, a plethora of talented performers was available to entertain at the dinner and the reception.” LOCATION, LOCATION. “At first, we talked about having the ceremony on a beach, but we really wanted my family, including my 89-year-old grandmother, to be able to attend,” says Todd. “Plus Ceron loves to dress up — he would wear a tux every day if he could. So we chose New York because there is no more glamorous city, and it was practical 020_021dstd0414.indd 20 Process CyanProcess MagentaProcess YellowProcess Black cookie chippers, makings for Uncle Todd’s Skinny Margarita Mix, Mexican wedding cookies, splits of Moët, caps and T-shirts. SUNDAY, DECEMBER 29. “It was really funny: Instead of working, we were in the hotel room in our PJs in the middle of the day,” says Todd. “It felt like I was hiding from people. The first celebration was Sunday at Bill’s Bar & Burgers, hosted by our friends, with ice skating and hot toddies.“ Todd’s original intention was to bring in another event company, “but our lead production manager and the whole team at Todd Events volunteered. They really wanted to do the wedding — and they did the most beautiful job,” says Todd. “I wrote the creative draft, picked out textiles and china, and then gave it to them. And I never went back, never reviewed anything. I was so unplugged from the process because I knew they would take care of it.” Ceron: “I had no idea about any of the details. Everything was a surprise.” The last decision was the macaroons from Ladurée. “We saw the new black-and-gold boxes in the window, so we just walked in and ordered them for our guests,” Todd says. “The little details are the fun part.” CHECK-IN. At check-in at The Carlyle, guests were handed an empty tote with the official T & C wedding logo and told to stop by the T & C Amenity Suite, which was “done like a swag room, so everyone could pick what they wanted,” Todd says. There was a wall of custom-made Lucite drawers filled with goodies, from Chanel men’s fragrance and Chanel polishes, Niven Morgan candles and logoed matches to scent your room, charmingly logoed bags of chocolate chip Ceron and Todd Fiscus 3/20/14 7:44 AM MONDAY, DECEMBER 30. Mise en scène in The Glasshouses The rehearsal dinner was at Morandi, a rustic Italian trattoria on Waverly Place, hosted by friends. DECEMBER 31 – THE BIG NIGHT. The towering gold-leaf cake by Sylvia Weinstock Following a champagne reception in Bemelmans Bar at The Carlyle, the party decamped en masse for The Glasshouses in the Chelsea Arts Tower for cocktails and dinner, via white coaches. “We consider ourselves modern,” Todd says, “but we’re traditionalists at heart. We love a formal dining table with embroidered linens. We wanted the dinner venue to feel like a classic supper club with the orchestra in black and white, with strings and a horn section.” The Rhythm Collective from Elan Entertainment filled that bill, with singers who had the night off from their regular roles in Motown, Les Misérables and The Lion King. “These kids just killed it,” Todd exclaims. “I could not stop crying when I walked into the dining room that night,” remembers Ceron. “Every detail was stunning: the embroidered napkins, the china and crystal, the staging and cake, the printed menu, the registration book!” THE CEREMONY. The ceremony began at a very civilized 10:30, après a stunning five-course dinner with Dom Pérignon on free pour. Marcy Blum, a well-known NY event designer, who was also the officiate, performed the ceremony. Todd and Ceron wrote the vows, and each bridesmaid read a portion. The room was very Mad Men sparkling in black, cream and gold. “New York, New York” Dim sum drag persona Caviar ring hors d’oeuvre WHO WERE YOU WEARING? Todd: Tom Ford, of course. Guests penned thoughts on “their” page, and the book became a treasured memory. A mariachi band greeted as the elevator doors opened, and DJ Tiger Lily kept everyone dancing. In addition to champagne, trays of mini-margaritas were served in individual Patron tequila bottles topped with corks and tiny straws. HAPPY NEW YEAR! At midnight, the newlyweds made a donation to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. A chorus line of top-hatted dancers performed “New York, New York” before the couple departed at 2 am New Year’s Day. Swifty’s on the Upper East Side was the location for a classic American brunch, and later a smaller group of family and friends gathered for old-school Chinese food at Shun Lee West near Lincoln Center. “One of my favorite party designers, Ed Libby, did the decor as a gift to us,” says Todd. “It was a completely over-the-top Chinese extravaganza complete with drag queens in full-on geisha attire. It was a blast!” BEST SURPRISE. Ceron: “Finding mariachis in New York on New Year’s Eve. It was the one thing I really wanted. It’s not a boda without mariachis.” Todd: “How easy and peaceful it was. I had a smile on my face the entire time!” Ceron: “So many people said to us, ‘Save the money and buy a house!’ I’m so glad we didn’t listen and had this wedding celebration. The memories are priceless.” THE HONEYMOONERS. On January 2, Todd and Ceron left for an epic journey to Japan and Thailand. Todd: “That was a milestone for us — the first time we both have taken a full month off! We laughed so hard … this was the only place that neither of us had ever been. We wanted to go somewhere that was new to us, and Ceron has been everywhere!” Guests returned to the 21st floor, where the registry was a large BY THE NUMBERS # of flowers in the flower walls – 9,220 garden roses, hydrangea, peonies, ranunculus, sweet peas and lisianthus # of bottles of Dom Pérignon – 66 # of pounds of caviar at wedding reception – 2 pounds # of guests at the wedding – 106 # of rooms booked at The Carlyle – 41 # of bands and DJs booked throughout the 4 days – 3 bands, 2 DJs # of amenity items – 1,500 total! # of Todd’s and Ceron’s suitcases sent to NY for the wedding and the trip to the Far East – 8 # of Todd Events staff that flew to NY to make the magic – 9 from Todd Events, 3 from Ceron Salon for hair and makeup for bridesmaids and guests, plus 10 local NYC contractors and 4 NYC planning assistants # of appetizers and courses served at the wedding – 12 appetizer selections, five-course dinner, four desserts, four late-night snacks # of catering staff for wedding – 38 # of cakes – 1 towering, gold-leafed wedding cake created by Matching Cartier Trinity rings DJ Lucy Wrubel at dim sum Sylvia Weinstock, NYC.
