NOVA: Hitler’s
Sunken Secret
Thursday, May 24th • 8pm
One of the most daring clandestine
operations of World War II was the 1944
sinking of the Norwegian ferry Hydro,
with its cargo of “heavy water” destined
for the Nazi’s secret atomic bomb
project. Although the mission was
declared a success, no one has ever
established if the special shipment was
actually on board. NOVA plunges 1,300
feet beneath a remote Norwegian lake to
find the answer on “Hitler’s Sunken
Secret”.
In the summer of 1967, thousands of young people
from across the country flocked to San Francisco’s
Haight-Ashbury district to join in the hippie experience,
only to discover that what they had come for was already
disappearing. By 1968 the celebration of free love, music
and an alternative lifestyle had descended into a
maelstrom of drug abuse, broken dreams and occasional
violence. Through interviews with a broad range of
individuals, including actor Peter Coyote and politician
Willie Brown, who lived through the summer of love,
as well as police officers walking the beat, teenage
runaways who left home without looking back, nonhippie residents who resented the invasion of their
community and scholars who still have difficulty
interpreting the phenomenon — this presentation offers
a complex portrait of the notorious event that many
consider the peak of the 1960s counter-culture
movement.
Exploring the pristine lake bottom with
a remotely operated vehicle, NOVA
locates the remarkably well-preserved
ship along with evidence of a
mysterious cargo in steel drums.
Analysis of the contents of one of
those drums will solve a six-decade-long
mystery about the role the Allies played
in preventing a Nazi nuclear bomb.

Do Not Go Gently
Monday, May 21st • 9pm
Program repeats during the month.
Do Not Go Gently celebrates the lives, work and wisdom of three
remarkable artists who have maintained their creative productivity well
into their golden years. Their stories illustrate the role of creativity and
art in contributing to a long, happy, healthy and vibrant life. Narrated
by famed newsman (and nonagenarian) Walter Cronkite, Do Not Go
Gently follows 82-year-old quilter Arlonzia Pettway, 90-year-old ballet
dancer Frederic Franklin and 109-year-old composer Leo Ornstein
through a typical day to illuminate their experiences as part of
America’s fastest-growing age group — men and women 85 and
older. Do Not Go Gently uncovers the science of lifelong creativity
through interviews
with gerontologist
Dr. Gene Cohen,
whose
groundbreaking
work provides a
deeper
understanding of
the aging brain. The
program also
documents the
importance of
creative outlets to
elders with
Alzheimer’s disease
and other agerelated disabilities.

Program Highlights
Nova: Pocahontas
Revealed
The Mother Road
Thursday, May 17th • 8pm
Special encore on Mother’s Day
Sunday, May 13th • 12noon
Monday, May 7th • 9pm
On May 13, 1607, three English sailing
vessels drop anchor beside a small island
fringed by swamps in the James River,
Virginia. On board are 104 colonists who
will establish the first successful English
settlement
in the New
World at
Jamestown.
The exploits
of the
brash,
swashbuckling
John Smith,
the wily,
venerable
chief Powhatan and his infatuated
daughter, Pocahontas, will be recited,
retold and embroidered until they gather
the status of an epic founding myth of
the new nation. Now, on the 400th
anniversary of Jamestown, science is
revealing the truth behind the myth —
a saga of unparalleled adventure, greed
and savagery.
This film celebrates Route 66, from Chicago to Los
Angeles, where the filmmaker, Lauren Cardillo, and
her 80-year-old mother, Irene, take the road trip of
their lives in a Mustang convertible. Shot over three
weeks, the program spans eight states, three time
zones and more than 2,400 miles, showcasing
fascinating people along the way while capturing
the nostalgia of the highway. Viewers see
the start of
Route 66 in
Chicago; Ted
Drewes’ ice
cream stand and
the Red Cedar
Inn in Missouri;
the Ribbon
Road, the Blue
Whale and the
Coleman
Theatre in
Oklahoma; the
Cadillac Ranch in
Texas; the
Jackalope and
Tucumcari in
New Mexico; the
Jack Rabbit Trading Post, Oatman and the Grand
Canyon in Arizona; and the end of the pavement
on the California coast in Santa Monica.
American Experience:
Amelia Earhart
Friday, May 18th • 8pm
Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly solo across the
Atlantic and the first to cross the North American continent
alone. Her exploits as an aviator, her beauty and intelligence,
her independence and charm made her a national heroine.
Seemingly invincible, Earhart tirelessly traveled and lectured,
a champion of aviation and equal opportunity for women.
But her cheering public didn’t know the cost of her courage.
The record-breaking flights, the aerial exhibitions and races,
the interviews to support her favorite causes, the endless
speeches and promotional commitments, together with
household responsibilities, health problems and financial worries, combined to push Earhart
to the point of exhaustion. In 1937, she set out to accomplish yet another first: to circle the
earth along the equator on an east-west flight. Friends warned that her preparations were
hurried, even careless. When her plane disappeared without a trace, the “First Lady of the Air”
was instantly transformed into an American legend.

Expectations: Living with
Alzheimer’s Disease
Friday, May 11th • 8pm
The Last Ridge
Monday, May 28th • 9pm
Memorial Day
On a freezing winter night in February
1945, the U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain
Division accomplished the impossible:
they scaled a 2,000-foot cliff in northern
Italy to knock the seemingly invincible
Germans from their impenetrable perch.
THE LAST RIDGE recounts the
remarkable story of the legendary 10th
Mountain Division, whose
extraordinary efforts turned the tide for
the Allied forces in Italy, revolutionized
winter mountain warfare abroad,
transformed winter sports and inspired
an entire generation of soldiers.
Narrated by National Public Radio’s
Scott Simon, the documentary traces the
10th Mountain Division’s history from
their uphill battles in World War II to
their current campaigns in troubled
Afghanistan.
Program repeats during the month.

Dr. Who New Series
Saturdays
7pm & 12midnight
Christopher Eccleston’s Doctor is wise, funny
and brave; an adventurer in time and space. His
detached logic gives him a vital edge when the
world is in danger. But when it comes to
human relationships, he can be found wanting.
That’s why he needs Rose (Billie Piper). Rose is
a shop-girl from the present day, trapped in a
dull existence. From the moment they meet,
the Doctor and Rose are soulmates. They
understand and complement each other. With
nothing to hold Rose back — neither her overbearing mum nor her hapless boyfriend — she
chooses the Doctor and his promise of fantastic
adventures across the universe. And he doesn’t
let her down...

Letter from the General Manager
I would like to thank everyone for their support during our recent
fundraising campaign. The generosity of our viewers enabled us to meet
our goals and keep us on firm financial footing….and that’s good news
for you because it means we have the resources to keep bringing you the
programs you value and even expand upon our services.
This month we are partnering with the Junior Diabetes Research
Foundation to raise community awareness of childhood diabetes. At
Debbie Emond
KBTC we are committed to providing safe, wholesome and educational
programs for children and families - dedicating over 35 hours each week to programs that promote
social values, provide positive role models, and help prepare kids for school. Our partnering with
the Junior Diabetes Research Foundation is one more way KBTC can help children in our
community lead healthier and happier lives.
Conversely, the fastest growing age group in America is the 85 and above group. This month KBTC
shares their stories and experiences through two programs. DO NOT GO GENTLY uncovers the
science of lifelong creativity through interviews with gerontologist Dr. Gene Cohen, whose
groundbreaking work provides a deeper understanding of the aging brain. The program also
documents the importance of creative outlets to people with Alzheimer’s Disease and other
age-related disabilities. EXPECTATIONS: LIVING WITH ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE offers
the chance to learn about the warning signs of Alzheimer’s Disease and tips on how to cope with a
loved one who may become, or may be afflicted. The program takes you into their world,
illustrating through their stories the problems they have faced, the obstacles they have overcome,
and the creative and compassionate solutions and resources they have utilized in living with
Alzheimer’s Disease.
Sincerely,
Debbie Emond
