Founded in 1901, it has been serving the community continuously for 113 years. We are situated on an idyllic campusstyle park that encompasses two buildings - a primary school for grades pre-k-2, and our beautiful Main building, with its castle-like exterior and impressive hallways, for students in grades 3rd through 8th. We are a neighborhood school, and more importantly, a family school that has seen multiple generations of families pass through our halls. All of our teachers are highly qualified in possession of State of Illinois Educator License with 85% of them with at least one or multiple master’s degrees. The teachers are experienced and dedicated to the parents and students of Bridgeport. Our Principal, Shelley Lugo-Cordova, and several other teachers have dedicated most of their career to our Armour School families and students for more than 20 years. Our school day begins at 7:45am with a drop off time of 7:30am to accommodate our parents with childcare needs. Armour School provides students with a high quality and rigorous education. All teachers attend numerous professional development opportunities that bring new research based instructional strategies that are implemented in all learning areas in the classrooms. Armour School focuses on preparing students to be college and career ready through full implementation of the Common Core State Standards. We strive to create a rigorous, college and career culture. All students are actively engaged in reading and writer’s workshop, active math classes, engaging hand on science classes, physical education more than the mandated CPS required time (at least twice a week), technology and art during the school day. Technology is a major component in all classrooms and subjects starting in pre-school. Students learn the most up to date computer programs that will enhance their educational goals. There are two full computer labs, three class sets of iPads and 1 set of chrome books for student use. The science lab allows students to actively engage in the scientific process through hands-on interactive activities that are aligned to the New Generation Science Standards. All teachers implement lessons aligned to the Common Core State Standards. Algebra is offered to eligible students in grade 8 providing them the opportunity to take the algebra exam in 8th grade instead of waiting until high school. Community partnerships are a vital component of the school.Through community partnerships students have had access to international music concerts, performances by Chicago’s Lyric Opera, International Music Foundations Concerts and appearances by theater groups addressing important issues in the students’ lives. The Chicago Chamber Musicians provides music class to grades 2nd, 3rd & 4th. We have a very active sports program, tutoring, homework help, art, and through our partnership with the CYC (Chicago Youth Center ) we were able to provide dance, karate and other fun activities. Our other partners include CIS, (Communities in Schools Chicago) who provide cultural and other opportunities for our children through field trips, speakers and performances, and Target, who not only remodeled our two Media Centers, but continues to provide literacy support through the Children’s Literacy Initiative program. Registration will take place August 20th - 31st, from 8:30a.m.-12:00p.m. Students entering grades pre-school, kindergarten and 6th must have a physical exam and proof of all required immunizations. All students entering kindergarten must have a vision exam. All students entering kindergarten, 2nd and 6th grade must have a dental exam. Armour School provides a half day 3 and 4 year old preschool. All kindergarten students receive a full day of instruction. Armour School does not have a uniform policy but has a Dress Code Policy for 2014-2015. All students are expected to exemplify proper grooming standards in a manner that projects an appropriate image for the student, school and district. Shirts shall be worn inside slacks at all times by all students. All clothing items must be of an approved color from the common color selections presented in this dress code policy. Recorder of Deeds Karen A. Yarbrough likes to engage constituents with this scenario: Did you know it is easier to steal a house than it is to steal a car? To steal a car, a thief needs to break a window or pry open a door, and if there is no alarm, has to find a way to get the car started…not easy in this time of anti-theft technology. To steal a house, a thief only needs information about your property easily found online, ten minutes Photoshopping a fake deed and signature, and a trip to one of the Recorder’s six offices to record it. Once that fake document is recorded, the scammer now owns your property until a judge rules the document fraudulent. Because a county Recorder is not authorized by law to validate legal claims in documents or to reject documents, it is important for homeowners to keep an eye on their most valuable asset. Oftentimes people find out about property fraud when it’s too late, meaning the fraudster has already sold or rented the home to someone else or used the false recording to take out a loan against the property. If someone is trying to sell or refinance, the transaction could be delayed or cancelled until the victim can fix the situation in court. Though it easy for someone to file a false claim against a house, it is also easy to for homeowners to protect themselves. The Cook County Recorder’s Free Property Fraud Alert will send you an alert – either by phone or email – any time a document is filed affecting your property. Registration is easy - all you need is your Property Index Number - and a few minutes at CookRecorder.com. There is also a toll free number – 1-800-728-3858 – for those who do not have access to a computer. Those who need more information are encouraged to watch the step-by-step registration tutorial video at the Recorder’s website or call the toll-free number. Recorder Yarbrough urges all property owners to check their deed at least once a year for suspicious activity, just like they check their credit report. This can be done at CookRecorder.com for free. Along with the Recorder’s Free Property Fraud Alert, homeowners can gain peace of mind and protect their most important asset – their home. If anyone suspects property fraud, they should contact the Recorder of Deeds’ Fraud Unit at 312-603-4000. Statement from Congressman Dan Lipinski (IL-3): “Today, both parties put their partisan bickering aside to support our veterans who have given so much to our nation. Having spent the last few months hearing and reading vets’ personal stories of the shameful lack of care they have received from the VA, I’m happy to support this bill that provides much-needed reform.” “The bill improves access and quality of care for veterans by requiring the VA to offer an authorization to receive non-VA care to any veteran who is enrolled in VA health care and is unable to secure an appointment at a VA medical facility within 30 days or resides more than 40 miles from the nearest VA medical facility. It also requires an independent assessment of VA medical care and establishes a Congressional Commission on Care to evaluate access to care throughout the VA health care system. It provides funding to hire more physicians and other medical staff, modernize existing infrastructure, and build new facilities. Additionally, the bill authorizes the VA to fire or demote senior managers and other employees for poor performance or misconduct, and it improves education benefits for veterans and dependents.” “In the coming months and years I will continue to hold the VA accountable and work to build on the positive steps laid out in this bill. And, as always, my door is always open to any veteran who has an issue with the care they receive from the VA or has any other questions or issues.” ommunities of Embracing t he c anaryv ille , B C ridgeport , ark wi th Bronzeville & M cKinley P ! a i t h , e d c i n , a d r d i i o f u a t o n t a t n Call or Stop in for a Tour 4500 S. Donor Comes Forward to Support Golf Outing A donor has come forward to match dollar for dollar all money raised at the Saint Barbara Golf Outing this year. The annual golf outing will take place on Saturday, September 13th, at the Gleneagles Country Club. This is the eighth year of the golf outing. Each year, the golf outing raises money for the school and provides scholarships for families in need. We are hoping with the commitment of the donor, we can bring in many new golf-ers. The golf outing is a great event. The cost of the outing is $135.00 and covers golf, cart, lunch, dinner, open bar and gifts. It is a shotgun start and begins at 11:30 am. Golfers should be there at least 45 minutes early to enjoy lunch. A wonderful dinner of ribs, chicken, etc. follows golf and includes an open bar. A special hole is dedicated to Gladys Kaminski, another avid golfer and founding member of the golf event.
