how our family of donors are
supporting and advancing our
mission to help children with
special needs.
We also welcome a group of new leaders to the Hospital
and the Foundation. Dr. Christopher Haines, whom we
introduced to you briefly in the last issue is our new
Chief Medical Officer. Dr. Haines is a quick learner with
boundless energy, who we know will have a great impact
on our hospital. Our new Vice President of Patient Care
Services, Bonnie Altieri, also brings years of experience
to her new role along with a warm smile and calm
confidence.
The Foundation board has added five new volunteer
leaders to its board of trustees. Joining us are Ron
Arrington, Ken Lane, John Nietzel, Dan Spicehandler
and Alex Weil. Each of these gentlemen has displayed
an interest in our work and has made a commitment to
ensure our future as a trustee. Their backgrounds are
profiled in the pages that follow.
We also acknowledge the successes of those donors
who have given of their time and talent to raise funds
to enhance our programs and purchase important
therapeutic equipment.
We all know, or have heard the saying that “It takes a
village to raise a child.” In our case, when we are treating
over 20,000 children annually, it takes much more than
a village.
To all of you who share our commitment to the children

Dr. Baloga-Altieri joined Children’s

Director of Patient Care Services and
was recently appointed Vice President,

Officer. She was previously at UMDNJ –
Robert Wood Johnson Medical School
where she served as a member of the
school’s senior executive team and Chief Nursing Officer for
nurses employed by RWJ Medical Group. Previous positions
at RWJUH include Vice President Medical Affairs, Assistant
Vice President of Nursing and Patient Services and Director of
Perinatal Services. She was a member of our Board of Trustees
from 2007 to 2013, serving on the Quality Committee, Ethics and
Patient Safety Committees and served on the Board Planning
Committee prior to her appointment at Children’s Specialized.

Pattie has worked at Children’s
Specialized Hospital for over 20
years. She currently oversees the
organization’s
eleven
outpatient
centers throughout the state. Each
outpatient center provides a variety
of rehabilitative services – (i.e.,
speech therapy, physical therapy,
occupational therapy, and psychology)
as well as physician sub-specialty services to children located
throughout New Jersey. In her role, she is responsible for the
growth, expansion, recruitment/retention, service excellence,
operational and clinical therapy aspects of the outpatient
services. Her role allows her to combine her clinical background,

Children’s Specialized Hospital’s New Chief Medical Officer
In addition to his new role at Children’s Specialized, Dr. Haines will
earn an MBA in Hospital Administration from Drexel University
LeBow College of Business; an honor the CMO will achieve early
next year.
“I don’t find much time to sleep,” said Dr. Haines, “but it’s worth
it because I love my job.” Despite his many responsibilities,
taking classes online allows him to successfully participate
in the program and remain working at a place that he loves.

A new Chief Medical Officer has taken
center stage, and under the hard work,
dedication and insight of Christopher Haines
DO, FAAP, FACEP, Children’s Specialized
Hospital will continue to thrive at what we do
best.
Dr. Christopher Haines was named Children’s
Specialized Hospital’s new Chief Medical
Officer (CMO) in early June, and with his
extensive medical background, it is no wonder
why he was given the high honor. Dr. Haines
will oversee all of the hospital’s medical
programs including inpatient rehabilitation,
physicians’ practices, research and the
fellowship program. Dr. Haines previously
worked as the Director of Emergency
Medicine and the critical care transport team
at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children.
Additionally, Dr. Haines was the Director of
Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Temple
University Medical Center. His work at St.
Christopher’s Hospital was what began his fascination with
hospital administration, and is the reason why he continues to
practice it today at Children’s Specialized Hospital.
Amy B. Mansue, President and CEO, Children’s Specialized
Hospital, explains the impact of having someone like Dr. Haines
on staff. “The children we see at Children’s Specialized Hospital
are much more medically complex,” said Mansue. “We know Dr.
Haines’ experience will help the children we serve reach their
maximum potential. He is a great addition to our stellar clinical
and senior leadership teams.”

It’s all happening at
Children’s Specialized
Hospital!
Funded largely by grants from the New Jersey
Governor’s Council for Medical Research and
Treatment of Autism, Children’s Specialized
Hospital has conducted trailblazing research
into the early screening of children for autism,
and are developing new tools for identifying
these children early, when treatment has the
most power to change their lives.
Researchers at Children’s Specialized Hospital
used the first award of close to $2 million
to screen for autism in low-income, racial
and ethnic minority children in medically
underserved communities of Newark,
Plainfield, Elizabeth, Trenton, New Brunswick
and Bridgeton. The findings: These children
tended to be screened and diagnosed with
ASD at older ages, or despite signs of a
severe disorder, missed entirely. As a result,
they were losing out on valuable early
intervention.
In response, our researchers created autism
screening clinics in low-income communities.
Rather than relying on the state’s very few
developmental pediatricians, we staffed the
clinics with advanced practice nurses trained
to conduct culturally-sensitive screenings, a bold move that
improved access, cut wait times, and lowered costs.
As part of the study, Children’s Specialized Hospital researchers
examined whether teachers or parents are the most accurate
initial screener of an at-risk child. Going where autism researchers
had never gone before – into daycare centers, Head Start
programs and preschools in underserved areas – investigators
found that teachers are essential to accurate screening. “This
was the first study to look at using teachers in preschools and
daycare centers to screen for autism,” says Dr. Yvette Janvier,
Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrician and Medical Director at
the Toms River site.
Dr. Janvier is using a second grant award of $2.25 million to develop
a purely visual screening tool in which photographs rather than
words depict the normal milestones of childhood – for example,
waving “bye-bye” – as well as behaviors that may red-flag ASD,
such as lining up toys. Making no language demands, the tool can
be used by anyone – worldwide, is the hope – to accurately screen
for ASD in young children.
Through our pioneering autism research and community
education, Children’s Specialized Hospital is changing the future
for people with ASD. Dr. Jill Harris describes that future, saying,
“My dream is a world in which everybody with ASD can reach their
maximum potential and have warm and meaningful relationships,

stable employment, a safe and happy home, and a community
that embraces them. We want people to recognize that they have
a lot to gain from knowing and supporting people with autism and
their families.”

Children’s Specialized Hospital is the region’s largest provider
of autism services. It is also a hub of clinical expertise for ASD,
boasting a high ratio of New Jersey’s specialists in the areas of
pediatric psychology, speech pathology and developmental
pediatrics, all disciplines involved in autism. A hefty proportion of
the state’s few licensed developmental pediatricians – 10 out of
31 – work here.

Jake was a toddler when he was diagnosed with ASD. This may
sound early, but the ideal time of diagnosis is even earlier -- at
18 months. Says Jill Harris, Ph.D., psychologist and Director of
Program Development, “Diagnosing a child very early versus
later can mean the difference in that child’s ability to speak and
to participate as fully as possible in school and life.” That is why
Children’s Specialized Hospital is tireless in its commitment to the
earliest possible screening for ASD, followed by diagnosis and
services.
On the
Spectrum
At the age of two-and-a-half, Jake LaRusso spoke only about 10
words, and was receiving speech services through the state of New
Jersey. But when his speech didn’t improve, and he began having
frequent and violent tantrums, Jake’s mother, Nicole LaRusso,
brought him to Children’s Specialized Hospital in Hamilton for an
evaluation. Nicole and Jake met with Louise Walpin, MS, Advanced
Practice Nurse, who evaluated him for ASD.
“It was in my head that nothing was wrong with him, and that
she was going to tell me he was fine,” said Nicole. Instead, Louise
told Nicole that her son had autism. “The words are completely
overwhelming,” recalls Nicole. “You can’t hear anything past,
‘Your child’s on the spectrum.’”
Louise didn’t waste a minute. She scheduled additional
evaluations for Jake with a Children’s Specialized Hospital
occupational therapist, speech therapist, and neurodevelopmental pediatrician. The results led to an immediate
increase in the frequency and intensity of Jake’s services. He now
has occupational therapy and speech therapy at the hospital
between four and five times a week. The family also began
receiving supportive services from a hospital social worker.
Jake was at the best place possible for diagnosis and treatment
of autism spectrum disorder. In a state with one of the highest
rates of autism (approximately 1 in 49 versus 1 in 88 nationwide)
Children’s Specialized Hospital pushes back with the most clinically
excellent and diverse autism-related services in the region -- many
say, in the country.
Even before a formal diagnosis is made, the hospital’s early
intervention therapists work with children from birth to three
years who have developmental delays, knowing that many will
ultimately be found to be on the spectrum, and that the early
infusion of help will give them a leg up. To cut short the wait for
a screening – which, not long ago, amounted to one-and-a-half
years in the tri-state area – the hospital has trained dozens of its
advanced nurse practitioners to screen, thereby putting kids on
the fast track to services. And at preschools, Head Start programs,
and daycare centers, Children’s Specialized Hospital staff teaches
others to recognize red flags, and to make sure any child who is a
“maybe” gets screened.
The hospital’s commitment to family-centered care also sets it
apart. For the often stunned and overwhelmed parents of newly
diagnosed children, there are support groups and an all-day
workshop. Parent panels offer priceless from-the-trenches advice,
empathy, and perhaps most valued, honest answers. Members of
a unique “parent faculty” offer guidance to families. Says Louise,
“Parents always feel connected. There’s always another parent
who will contact you. We don’t diagnose your child and leave you
hanging. We offer a roadmap for your child – and family.” “When
Jake was diagnosed, everyone made me feel that the roller coaster
ride is normal. They convinced me that it wasn’t going to be easy,
I’d get through it and they’d be there every step of the way,” adds
Nicole, Jake’s mom.
Jake LaRusso’s growth continues, thrilling his
parents. Says Nicole, “He’s starting kindergarten in an
autism class for highly advanced kids. The changes
he has undergone are just remarkable.”

The 20th Annual Snapple Bowl
Everyone has special things that they hold close to their
heart. For Marcus Borden, newly retired football coach of East
Brunswick High School, those are football and giving back to the
community. Borden, who had been a coach for the past three
decades, in 1993, figured out a way to make his two passions
collide.
His brainstorm led to the infamous game everyone now knows
and loves, and what Borden is most recognized for, The Snapple
Bowl. The event is an All-Star football game played by seniors
of Union and Middlesex counties to raise money for various
charities. Over the course of its twenty year streak, Borden
and his players have managed to raise an astounding
$415,000 for Children’s Specialized Hospital in Mountainside,
and The Lakeview School for Cerebral Palsy in Edison. Philip
Salerno, Children Specialized Hospital’s Foundation President
and Chief Development Officer was initially contacted about the
event two decades ago, and he said, “I had no idea the sense of
family it would create among the organizers and sponsors, no
idea it would become such a part of the tradition of summer to
be involved in the Snapple Bowl.” Salerno added, “I did not know
each year there would be this huge effort underway to better
help us at Children’s Specialized Hospital and the Lakeview
School serve children with special needs.”
Each year the Union County all-stars have the opportunity to
visit Children’s Specialized Hospital’s long term care center in
Mountainside. Patients of long-term care have a wide array of
medical needs such as critical airways, prematurity complications,
chromosomal disorders or neurologic impairments. Family
circumstances lead children to this facility where staff give
patients around the clock care. The visits are truly beautiful,
empowering experiences, and the All-Stars get a grasp of the
battle these children face every day off the field, while they fight
for them on the field.
Many colleagues, players and friends who have worked
alongside Borden know him as a strong, detail-oriented leader
working meticulously until he gets it right. He
says his orchestrated style with which he runs
the charity game every year is insight into
Borden’s coaching approach he followed for
the past thirty years. “If something goes wrong,
there’s only one person I can blame and that’s
myself,” Borden said. “I take pride in trying to
be organized and to understand what has to be
done.”
The 2013 Snapple Bowl took place at Kean
University on July 18. Kickoff at 7:00 p.m. that
evening left Middlesex and Union Counties
In addition to his tireless efforts supporting the annual Snapple Bowl
game, Marcus Borden also holds an annual pep-rally at Children’s
Specialized Hospital long term care facility in Mountainside. He uses
this opportunity to introduce the Snapple Bowl athletes from Union
County to the cause they are supporting. In the photo above, players

player himself, Jehovah welcomed the opportunity to talk about the
game ahead.

Since recently stepping down from his coaching position,
Borden has remained dedicated to this cause, and will continue
to embody what the Snapple Bowl stands
for. He has definitely made his mark on the
field and in the lives of countless players. Phil
Salerno says his impact has gone much deeper
than football. “His work with us at Children’s
Specialized Hospital has enabled our staff to do
amazing things for our kids, and we will forever
be grateful for his big heart and steadfast
dedication to his two loves, football and helping
those in need.”

Bridgewater Costco
Bridgewater Costco is unstoppable.
For the past six years, Bridgewater Costco has raised more for
Children’s Specialized Hospital than any other warehouse in the
market. This year, they also had the highest percentage increase
at 34.58%, raising $61,520. With the addition of Costco corporate
match, their total campaign contribution was over $70,793!
So, what's their secret?
“People are personally connected to the cause,”
explained Marlana Simone, Membership and Marketing Manager,
who has been with Costco since 2006. “It’s a big community
effort. Our associates understand they are helping
their neighbors.”
Part of that understanding comes from actually touring the
hospital. General Manager, Michael Freeman made sure to bring
several employees to the Costco kick-off, held by the hospital
each year. “It would be impossible to walk through the halls of the
hospital and not care,” commented Simone.
In large part to Bridgewater’s efforts, Costco once again took
the reins as the highest fundraising Children’s Miracle Network
Hospitals partner for Children’s Specialized Hospital. This was a
title they had held since 2007 and lost for the first time in 2012 to
Walmart. They came back full force to reclaim that title in 2013!
We look forward to 2014 with the addition of two new warehouses
in our market, North Plainfield and North Brunswick, both
scheduled to open in Fall 2013. Thank you to all of the warehouses
who worked so hard to raise almost a half a million dollars for the
hospital this year!!
