Welcome
Burton Mission
The Burton experience will prepare students to be college and world ready.
Burton Vision
Burton will be acknowledged as a “lighthouse” school district in our commitment to educate
the “entire” child. We will inspire our students to be excited, curious, engaged and selfconfident learners. We will foster leadership among our student, parents, staff and community
as we prepare each student to succeed.
HOW IT WORKS
Substitute teachers are provided with Aesop logins and may use the internet to schedule sub
positions or wait for an electronic phone call. Instructional Aides (including special education
aides), clerks, secretaries, MOT substitutes will be called by a human resources representative
to schedule days. As a substitute, you will work on an on-call, as needed basis. There is no
guarantee how many hours per week you will work. You are assigned to fill the position of a
regular employee who is absent from service. Substitute employees do not receive any health
benefits.
If for some reason you have to cancel your assignment, please log in to Aesop and cancel or call
the district office immediately so that we can try to make arrangements to find another sub.
Every effort is made to contact substitutes well in advance of the date they are needed.
However; situations will arise where you will be contacted the morning of the day that you are
needed.
You are not obligated to accept assignments when you are contacted. We understand that you
may be retired or currently employed elsewhere and are not available. We do ask that should
you no longer be available to substitute for our District, that you contact the Human Resources
Department immediately so that we can update our lists. On the same note, should any of your
contact information change, please notify us immediately so that we can make the necessary
changes.

your bank. In order to participate, a signed Automatic Deposit Enrollment Form is required.
Further information regarding this program may be obtained through the District Payroll
Department.
School Calendars: A copy of the three calendars for the 2014-2015 school year has been
provided for you in the Appendix of this handbook. Please note that the sites that each
calendar applies to is located in the top left hand corner.
School Start and End Times (Teachers only): Start and end times vary depending on the site
you are working at. Please contact the site secretary or department secretary and or supervisor
for that information. It is preferred that you show up early enough to allow you time to check
in, familiarize yourself with your assignment, as well as familiarize yourself with the site, its
rules regarding volunteers, safety drills, etc.
Failure to Complete Assignments
We will regularly evaluate substitutes due to the high number of those who do not show up to
assignments, show up late, or are never available to accept assignments.
Substitutes who consistently cancel assignments or do not work during the current school year
put themselves at risk of being removed from the substitute pool. It is your responsibility to
manage your assignments.

Daily Activity
Check-In at the Site
Always check-in at the main administration office of the school or site at which you are subbing.
You will need to where a badge while on campus at all times.
Duties-Teachers Only
Please check sub plans and verify with the site secretary (if needed) to determine if you will
need to cover any bus or campus supervision. A substitute teacher is employed to fill the
position of a teacher who is temporarily absent. This role is vital to the instructional program
and requires individuals who can readily adjust to varied situations and programs. The
substitute teacher must be knowledgeable of the district’s curriculum and be able to continue
the program established by the teacher in the classroom.
Check-Out at the Site
Always check-out at the main administration office of the school or site and return any keys or
other District property including your ID badge. Be sure that your timesheet is accurate and
initialed by site administrator prior to leaving the campus.

General Tips and Suggestions
1. Ask the secretary for the location of the teacher’s lounge, restrooms, and regular
teacher’s mailbox (Substitute Teachers) and check it for bulletins, urgent messages, etc..
Other subs can ask the secretaries for the bulletin if appropriate.
2. The substitute is performing a professional service. Attention should be given to
personal grooming and a neat appearance. You should always dress professionally (ie
business casual/no visible tattoos/no visible piercings other than ears). Remember
that you will be working with other professionals, parents and students, so the more
professional you look and act, the easier it will be to gain their respect.
3. Your own behavior and attitude are factors in successful classroom/campus/bus control.
A courteous attitude, depicting a basic fairness and sincere interest in the students, will
be reflected in your students’ behavior.
4. You feedback is important. Please feel free to share your positive and negative
experiences with the school or department Secretary and/or Principal or Supervisor.
5. Cell phones are for personal use and DO NOT have a place in the work place. You may
not use your phone when supervising students. This means that you may use it only on
your breaks. In the case of an emergency, your family should contact the site that you
are working at that day. For your convenience, a list of site numbers has been provided
for you in the Appendix of this handbook.

BURTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT
“TWENTY-SIX TIPS TO HELP” FOR THE SUBSTITUTE EMPLOYEE”
1. Arrive at the school early enough to survey the teacher’s lesson plans, locate
materials, review fire and earthquake instructions, and meet a few of the
teachers.
2. Look over the seating chart of the class, and zero in on a few names so that you
can start a rapport with the class immediately.
3. Ask questions of regular staff members, they will be glad to help.
4. Be confident, concise, and firm. Your first words and actions go a long way
toward setting the tone of the day.
5. Follow the regular teacher’s lesson plans and discipline system to the best of
your ability. Perform any duties, as outlined in the lesson plans (for example, lunch
duty or after school duty).
6. Speak softly, and wait until all students are listening before giving instructions.
7. Avoid commanding and threatening students. Solicit cooperation, remembering
that you’re on the same team.
8. Compliment the students on their classroom displays, behavior, enthusiasm, etc.
9. Circulate through the class as students are working, making positive comments
and/or put various colored pluses on their papers (i.e., green for proper heading,
red for working quietly, blue for having solved problem #12 correctly).
10. Allow students to help you with daily routines - involve the students. When
appropriate, help students check their own work.
11. Deal with the individual, not the group, when discipline problems occur. Be firm
and stay in control of the situation, and request help if necessary.
12. Have your own simple discipline and reward system in the event you can’t figure
out the regular teacher’s classroom behavior management system.
13. Have a story, game, or sponge activity ready in the event that you finish lessons
early.
14. Have a generic lesson ready that can be used at a variety of grade levels just in
case a blank spot occurs.
8
15. Do not touch students for any reason (ie. When helping a student with the computer,
do not put your hand on top of theirs to help them, ask to use the mouse to
demonstrate instead).
16. Listen to the students and be observant (AGAIN---NO CELL PHONE USAGE).
17. Bail out of a lesson that is failing, and move to something you’re comfortable with or
review a previous lesson.
18. Never leave a class unattended.
19. Leave the classroom in order. Have students pick up papers, straighten desks,
etc. before leaving at the end of the school day.
20. Dismiss students in an orderly fashion one group at a time.
21. Do not dismiss students early or late (BE ON TIME).
22. Be respectful of classroom equipment and supplies, putting pencils, books, etc.
away neatly.
23. Always lock the door when you leave the classroom.
24. Correct papers that can be easily corrected.
25. Leave a report of the day for the teacher. Include positive experiences, a
lesson plan progress report, a list of absent students, and names of cooperative
as well as uncooperative students.
26. Do not rummage through the teachers drawers or files. Adhere to the lesson plan
regarding supplies. If you cannot find what you need, please call the office.
