Jung-Ho Pak, Artistic
Director & Conductor
After any concert you’ll most
likely find this 26-year veteran
conductor investigating new
restaurants. He loves anything exotic
and has a big appetite for great sushi.
We can’t keep it under wraps a minute longer. We’re breaking out another brand new
season – eleven new concerts, the most exciting, eclectic mix of music we’ve put together
ever. Our theme is Meet Me – and we love how you can spin it two ways. It’s about
introductions and encounters. Starting here. Starting now. Meet our musicians like you’ve
never met them before. Meet our guests, among the most talented artists performing
today. And meet the people behind-the-scenes who play their parts oh-so beautifully, too.
Yes, there are people to meet and places to go… so many places for us to hang out and
have fun together. The concert hall. Pre-concert talks. Classes. Guest Artist Events. Road
trips. Parties. We can’t wait to see you again, or meet you for the very first time. Sometime.

Your concert ticket includes a free pass to a fun class. Dr. John Clark,
our resident classical music enthusiast, leads our
“Musically Speaking” talks one hour prior to every
Masterpiece Series concert… just steps away
from the concert hall. These free, 30-minute
talks put an interesting spin on the composer
and composition you’re about to hear, and are
filled with fascinating stories, interesting
observations and little-known tidbits he’s
picked up along his musical studies
and travels.

wilight’s the right time for this summer party. You bring the guests.
We’ll take care of the rest. It’s time to download decades of great
music and play it back live! – a great family night out under the tent
and under the stars. Here’s a sneak peek For Your Eyes Only: a special
guest appearance by the legendary Sheena Easton. This Scottish lass took the
Morning Train straight to the top of the Billboard Charts in the ‘80s, breaking
records, winning Grammys and changing the beat of America’s playlist along
the way. Jung-Ho and the orchestra have great new plays of their own – a
few of your favorite NFL theme songs, a peek into the Symphony “oldies”
vault, plus some stripes to go with those beautiful summer stars for the big
patriotic finish everyone loves. So, put a little POPS into your summer plans.
There’s no better way to unplug and unwind than a party… symphony style.

SPECIAL GUEST APPEARANCE
By The Numbers
TWO world premieres are among this
season’s fabulous firsts. It’s the FIRST
time we’ll open the season with TWO
guest artists, the FIRST time our
Concertmaster will perform solo and the
FIRST time you’ll hear Mozart’s “Jupiter”
on our stage. We’ll meet TWO Grammy
Winners, toast TWO Hollywood Legends
and hear TWO unusual instruments for
the very first time. We’ll perform THREE
violin concertos and THREE symphonies
and hang out with FOUR Broadways
stars. We’ll visit at least FIVE countries
influenced by the ancient Silk Road and
spend the holidays with SIX talented
siblings, the Annie Moses Band. ELEVEN
concerts. TWENTY-NINE guest artists.
SEVENTY musicians.
ONE fabulous time. Every time!

wo world-class soloists. Two longtime collaborators. Two friends
who just happen to share the same
name. Lightning will strike twice
at this season’s premiere! First, Jon
Nakamatsu and Jon Manasse will perform
masterpieces that have earned them individual
acclaim. Then, they’ll switch things up with the
world premiere of The Single Step, a concerto for
piano and clarinet by Gordon Goodwin. This is
the second piece the Grammy-award-winning
composer has written for the “two Jons,” who
also like to blur the lines between genres and
can’t resist a punch of jazz.
Prokofiev also knew the power of two. World
War II. Shortly after the Allied troops landed on
the beaches of Normandy, and while Russian
forces pushed toward Berlin, the composer
completed his Fifth symphony in a single
month. It was a turning point for the 53-year-old
composer, whose skill and confidence hover
over each note. But this exquisite piece, which
glorifies freedom, happiness and the greatness of
the human spirit, was also a turning point for the
world that first heard it.

and Errol Flynn the greatest action hero of his generation. The
John Williams
1938 film saved Erich Korngold’s life. Literally. While the Jewish
composer was in Hollywood working on the swashbuckler’s
score, Hitler invaded his homeland. There was no going back to Austria. And that’s
how some of Europe’s Wunderkinder, composers at the height of their creative
powers, decided the soundtrack of the fledgling movie industry was as classical
as a Strauss tone poem. Korngold scored some of Hollywood’s best flicks: King’s
Row (Ronald Reagan’s break-out movie), Anthony Adverse (which won the 1937
Oscar for Best Movie Score) and Sea Hawk (another gripping Errol Flynn adventure).
But Hollywood didn’t make Korngold; Korngold made Hollywood, says Philippe
Quint, who fell instantly in love with the composer’s violin concerto and received a
Grammy nomination in 2009 for his definitive recording of it. John Williams of Star
Wars fame is also a self-professed Korngold fan, and we’ll have a little fun pointing it
out as we travel to another musical galaxy.

t takes a lot of musicians to put the life (waltzes, marches and polkas) into this party! We’re also
bringing three resolutions into the New Year. Number one: Make new friends, but keep the old. Our
new pal Marni Nixon is most famous for being INVISIBLE. In 1964, Time magazine dubbed her the
“Ghostess with the Mostest” and spilled the beans on one of Hollywood’s best-kept secrets: she’s
the real singing voice of Deborah Kerr, Natalie Wood and Audrey Hepburn in The King and I, West
Side Story and My Fair Lady. And that’s just a little conversation starter. Imagine the stories she’ll tell and the
music we’ll share… with a little help from her friend and ours, Broadway star Sarah Uriarte Berry. Resolution
two: Get our hands on that odd looking instrument you can’t even touch to play. We found it – and one of
the best thereminists in the world to play it. We think it’s a pretty safe bet you’ve never heard Rachmaninoff
or Gershwin quite like this before! What’s that? The third resolution? Skip the Vienna Café before the show. But
you know that’s not gonna happen. Life’s too short not to be sweet.

WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART wrote five violin concertos. This
is his last. He wrote forty-one symphonies. This is his last. He wrote his last opera
in the last year of his life. The point? Sometimes the best really are the last. The
most loved. The most requested. And, they’re here. In one fest of finales. Plus some
firsts. This is the first time we’ll perform the “Jupiter” symphony, Mozart’s fearless
flight to the very edge of what’s musically possible. He uses five different melodies
simultaneously in the blazing finale which certainly calls for some fearlessness of
our own. This is also the first time you’ll meet Jae Cosmos Lee, the soloist. You know
him as our Concertmaster and Director of Nth Degree. He’s also making music and

years since Beethoven’s last symphony premiere and people couldn’t wait to hear his
Ninth – featuring Vienna’s best soloists, a spectacular chorus and the largest orchestra
the composer had ever assembled. Michael Umlauf was the official conductor.
Beethoven’s last attempt to conduct an orchestra had been disastrous. You see,
the great composer was now completely deaf. On this day, he was only to give the
tempos at the beginning of every part.
At the end of the scherzo, the audience broke into wild applause. But, Beethoven
couldn’t hear it. Finally, one of the soloists gently turned him toward the audience to
receive their approval. It was then they realized how profoundly deaf he was. For the
rest of the night, they waved their hands, hats and handkerchiefs in the air and rose for
five ovations to praise the miraculous work.
The story of the premiere gives us goose bumps. How Beethoven got to this point
is an equally amazing story we’ll share with you through anecdotes, videos and live
musical examples with the orchestra. Then you’ll hear what Beethoven never did. The
greatest feel-good symphony of all time. Beethoven’s Ninth: the Choral Symphony.

ou can learn a lot from a fortune cookie. Thousands of years later, Confucius’ little
life lesson still holds true. Listening to music makes us happy. But you already know
that. So, why not take the next step? Pick up an instrument and make some music
of your own. The Conservatory offers lessons (from bass and bassoon to oboe and
cello!) for those who like flying solo. But, you don’t have to go it alone. Join a group lesson
and start singing or playing the piano, violin or even the ukulele with others. (Seriously, that
plucky little instrument is easy to learn and the life of every party!) Or, sign up for the new
iPad Music Lab and discover a digital world of apps that will help you learn, improve and
become your best musical self. Your smartest and sharpest
self, too. Playing an instrument can increase your IQ,
improve your memory and smoothe out life’s little
stressors. But the best reason to play is simple:
because it’s fun.
This is the way to listen to music. Up Close! Unplugged! LIVE! So get your friends together and
come meet ours – 70 fabulously-talented musicians who really know how to have a great time. It
all starts with a ticket. Remember, many concerts sell-out very early, so reserve your seats today!
