SUMMER PET SAFETY TIPS
Hot weather can make us all uncomfortable and it poses special
risks for your dog. Keep the following safety concerns in mind as the
temperature rises and follow our tips to keep your dog cool.
Heat Hazards
• If your dog is outside on a hot day, make sure he has a shady spot
to rest in. Doghouses are not good shelter during the summer as
they can trap heat. You may want to fill a child’s wading pool with
fresh water for your dog to cool off in.
• Never leave your dog in a closed vehicle on a hot day. The
temperature inside a car can rise to over 100 degrees in a matter
of minutes.
• Always provide plenty of cool, fresh water.
• Avoid strenuous exercise on extremely hot days. Take walks in the
early mornings or evenings, when the sun’s heat is less intense.
• Try to avoid prolonged exposure to hot asphalt or sand, which can
burn your dog’s paws.
• Dogs that are brachycephalic (short-faced), such as Bulldogs,
Boxers, Japanese Chins and Pekingese, have an especially hard time
July 2015
Langham
in the heat because they do not pant as efficiently as longer-faced
dogs. Keep your brachycephalic dog inside with air-conditioning.
General Health
• Make sure your dog’s vaccinations are up to date, especially since
dogs tend to stay outdoors longer and come into contact with other
animals more during the summer months.
• Keep dogs off of lawns that have been chemically treated or
fertilized for 24 hours (or according to package instructions) and
away from potentially toxic plants and flowers.
• Keep your dog well brushed and clean.
• Fleas, ticks and mosquitoes, which carry heartworm disease, are
more prevalent in warmer months. Ask your veterinarian for an
effective preventive to keep these parasites off your dog.
Beach Tips
• Make sure your dog has a shady spot to rest in and plenty of fresh
water.
• Dogs, especially those with short hair, white fur and pink skin, can
sunburn. Limit your dog’s exposure during the day and apply sun
block to his ears and nose 30 minutes before going outside.
• Check with a lifeguard for daily water conditions. Dogs are easy
targets for sea lice and jellyfish.
• Running on the sand is strenuous exercise. A dog that is out of
shape can easily pull a tendon or ligament, so keep a check on your
dog’s activity.
• Do not let your dog drink seawater; the salt will make him sick.
• Salt and other minerals in ocean water can damage your dog’s
coat, so rinse him off at the end of the day.
• Not all beaches permit dogs; check local ordinances before heading
out.
Water Safety
• Most dogs enjoy swimming, but some cannot swim and others may
hate the water. Be conscious of your dog’s preferences and skills
before trying to make them swim.
• If you’re swimming for the first time with your dog, start in shallow
water and coax him in by calling his name. Encourage him with toys
or treats. Or, let him follow another experienced dog he is friendly
with.
• Never throw your dog into the water.
• If your dog begins to paddle with his front legs, lift his hind legs and
help him float. He should quickly catch on and keep his back end up.
• Don’t let your dog overdo it; swimming is very hard work and he
may tire quickly.
• If swimming at the ocean, be careful of strong tides.
• If you have your own pool, make sure your dog knows where the
Langham
stairs or ladder are located. Be sure that pool covers are firmly in
place; dogs have been known to slip in under openings in the covers
and drown.
• Never leave your dog unattended in water.
Travel
• By Air: Many airlines will not ship animals during summer months
due to dangers caused by hot weather. Some will only allow dogs to
fly in the early morning or in the evening. Check with your airlines for
specific rules. If you do ship a dog, put icepacks or an ice blanket
in the dog’s crate. (Two-liter soft drink bottles filled with water and
frozen work well.) Provide a container of fresh water, as well as a
container of frozen water that will thaw over the course of the trip.
• By Car: Keep your dog cool in the car by putting icepacks in his
crate. Make sure the crate is well ventilated. Put a sunshade on your
car windows. Bring along fresh water, a bowl and a tarp or tent so
you can set up a shady spot when you stop. Keep a spray bottle filled
with water to spritz on your dog to cool him down.
• By RV: A dog’s safety should not depend on the air conditioning
and generator systems in an RV or motor home. These devices can
malfunction, with tragic results. If you leave your dog in an RV with
the generator running, check it often or have a neighbor monitor it.
Some manufacturers have devices that will notify you if the generator
should malfunction. Never leave an RV or motor home completely
shut up, even if the generator and AC are running. Crack a window
or door or run the exhaust fan. Never, ever leave a dog unattended
in a vehicle in the summer months. Heatstroke and death can occur
within minutes in warm temperatures.
Heatstroke
Heatstroke can be the serious and often fatal result of a dog’s prolonged
exposure to excessive heat. Below are the signs of heatstroke and the
actions you should take if your dog is overcome. Early Stages: Heavy
panting; rapid breathing; excessive drooling; bright red gums and
tongue; or standing 4-square, posting or spreading out in an attempt
to maintain balance. Advanced Stages: White or blue gums; lethargy,
unwillingness to move; uncontrollable urination or defecation; labored,
noisy breathing; and shock. If your dog begins to exhibit signs of
heatstroke, you should immediately try to cool the dog down by: Apply
rubbing alcohol to the dog’s paw pads; apply ice packs to the groin
area; hose down with water; allow the dog to lick ice chips or drink
a small amount of water; offer Pedialyte to restore electrolytes; and
check your dog’s temperature regularly during this process. Once the
dog’s temperature has stabilized at between 100 to 102 degrees, you
can stop the cool-down process. If you cannot get the dog cooled
down and you begin to see signs of advanced heatstroke, take the
dog to the veterinarian immediately. www.akc.org

Girl Scouts
COPPER CREEK MEADOWS COMMUNITY
GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL
12 Girl Scout troops participated in our Bridging Ceremony on May 2nd,
ranging in age from Daisy Girl Scouts bridging to Brownies all the way
up to our graduating Senior Girl Scouts from Troop 5131. Our stage
was decorated with a variety of outdoor creatures made by the bridging
troops. The butterflies made from pool noodle sections and tissue paper
by troop 16462 and the balloon bumblebees made by troop 16320 were
ones we particularly noticed. There were lots of others to look at, also we have some very creative and artistic girls in our Community!
Our Bridging troops were 16048, 16171,16460,16462,16465,16467,
16407,16320, 16464, 16137, 16170 and 5131. Congratulations to all
our Bridging troops! As each troop was announced, one of the leaders
told about the troop’s activities during the year. Service projects and
cookie sales, (some service projects INCLUDED cookies or were
funded by cookie sales), field trips and campouts, participation in
Council and Copper Creek Meadows Community events were only a
few of the things mentioned. Girl Scouts are active girls!
Troop 16465 bridged from Brownie to Junior Girl Scouts, after a very
busy year! Their most recent activity was “camping in space” at the
Johnson Space Center. Their visit included Mission Control, Rocket
Park and the training center and all the fun of a sleepover. Members
of the troop are Kerrigan Abner, Tristan Chambers, Caroline Deputy,
Carter Green, Alyssa Laich, Jaydah Mora, Kiran Nath, Annie Patrick
and Mia Walther.
TROOP 16435
Cadette troop 16435 used cookie booth donation funds to purchase
and deliver Girl Scout Cookies to Casa Esperanza de los Ninos.
They also toured the offices and learned about the children they
help. Troop 113046 sent a no-sew blanket and a Girl Scout BuildA-Bear to a young girl with Stage 4 neuroblastoma cancer in Ohio.
Troop 16468 members have been earning the Independence Badge
and showing their increasing maturity with a variety of activities.
They have been discussing bad habits and resolving to break them;
learning how to separate laundry and getting other tips for washing
clothes and have been learning to help around the house (this
included fixing a leaky faucet). The girls also went shopping WITH a
Girl Scout buddy (without their parents) to buy 2-3 items. This helped
them to learn about budgeting and making choices.
Troop 16503 attended the “Nature Rocks” workshop, as part of a
weekend at Camp Arnold. Troop members enjoyed preparing and
eating a camp fire breakfast and also spent time at the archery range.
You can see by their smiling faces that they had a great time! Daisy

in many activities this year and are looking forward to having more
fun with their troop next year! These new Brownie Girl Scouts are

Phan and Eva Thomas.
Copper Creek Meadows Community is making plans for the 20152016 school year. We can already tell you that Leader/Daughter
weekend is on the schedule for next year! It is not too late to sign
up for resident camp this summer. Camp sessions run through
August 1st. Check the resident camp website at www.gssjc.org/

around the Council, including a new twilight camp scheduled for July

For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values
found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are
just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they
were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, selfconfidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship
skills that influence their adult lives.

Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important
as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal
responsibility and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions
have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices
can be made. Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys
ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach
outdoor and life skills which help our youth Be Prepared. Your area

CFISD Chief of Police Alan Bragg, CFISD police officer Faladrick
Brown and Deputy Cameron Brewer of the Harris County Precinct 4
Constables (and former CFISD officer) were honored.
Interior & Exterior
Officers Brown and Brewer were recognized for their two years of
police work at Cypress Springs High School in building relationships
and helping to create a positive learning environment for students.
Each received the Law Enforcement Medal and certificate.
They started a program known as “Thousand Guys in Ties” that has
now grown to five CFISD campuses and more than 5,000 students.
The program has stretched into a weeklong event at various
campuses featuring outside speakers.
Chief Bragg was recognized on the occasion of the 20th anniversary
of Salute to Law Enforcement, a program that he started. The day
allows various law enforcement agencies and the public to come
together for a community event in which fallen officers are recognized,
scholarships are awarded and demonstrations are presented.
Over the last 20 years, the event has reached more than 50,000
members of the public, and each year more than 80 different
agencies are represented.
“These recipients are true patriots and heroes in our community,”
said Chapter Vice President Tom Jackson. “They have profound
impacts in our neighborhoods and on our children. They make things
better for everyone around them, and that’s exactly the spirit that the
leaders, soldiers, merchants and laymen of the American Revolution
would have appreciated.”

CCS STUDENTS VOLUNTEER FOR ARTHRITIS FOUNDATION
Cypress Christian middle school students Avery Smith and Maddie
Beckmeier and their moms volunteered in downtown Houston at
the Arthritis Foundation’s annual community fundraising 5K walk
event. They organized t-shirts, assisted with the registration process
and set up the food tables. Once the race was underway, Avery
and Maddie assisted the participants at the first mile maker, giving
direction and cheering them on. They rounded out their volunteer
service by assisting various sponsors in breaking down booths and
cleaning up the grounds along the Buffalo Bayou Trail. Avery and
Maddie said they enjoyed making a difference in the lives of those
who suffer from arthritis by doing what the Lord calls them to do serve! 1 Peter 4:10 says: “Each of you should use whatever gift you

HOUSTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER
REMAINING 2015 SEASON
EXPLORING LIFE, LOVE & LAUGHTER
The Houston Family Arts Center (HFAC) announces its 10th
mainstage season, which explores life, love and laughter through
timeless musicals, zany comedies, a classic murder mystery and a
Shakespearean comedy.
• Shakespeare - comes to life, June 12th - July 5th with A Midsummer
Night’s Dream. The canon’s most enchanted comedy pursues
love with calculated abandon! This story of mortal and immortal
paramours set in a mythical forest is one that will cast a spell on
lovers of all ages.
• 1776 - Closing this exciting season, July 24th - August 16th, is
the American musical, 1776. With revolutionary immediacy, our lofty
founding fathers are found to be genuine people who debate, bargain
and fray one another’s nerves as they struggle on the tortuous road
to independence. This musical witness to the creation of one of
the most eloquent documents in history will stir the soul of every
American.
All performances are on the HFAC Garza Mainstage, recently named

ALL SHOWS AT STUDIO 101,
1824 SPRING STREET #101, HOUSTON TX 77007
Mildred’s Umbrella Theatre Company has been selected for an NEA
Art Works grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for our
upcoming production of the Houston Premiere of The Drowning Girls
by Beth Graham, Charlie Tomlinson, Daniela Vlaskalic. In addition,
the company has received a Brown Foundation Discretionary Fund
Grant for operations in our upcoming season. These grants are highly
competitive and we are proud to have been among the recipients.
The Drowning Girls, a modern interpretation and poetic retelling
of the “Brides in the Bath” slayings in 20th century England. The
work also examines the lengthy history of misogyny and domestic
abuse in modern civilization. Originally produced in Canada for the
Edmonton Fringe Festival, the work will debut in Houston on July 16,
2015 and will run for 12 performances through August 1, 2015. In
line with MU’s mission to promote and support the work of women,
the play, written by three female playwrights, illustrates how far

CORNERSTONE UMC LAUNCHES SUMMER SHOE DRIVE!
Cornerstone United Methodist Church is conducting a shoe collection
drive, which will run until the end of July to raise funds for our family
life center. We will earn funds based on the number of pairs collected as
Funds2Orgs will purchase all of the donated goods. Those dollars will be
utilized towards the costs associated with our family life center. Anyone
can help by donating gently worn, used or new shoes at Cornerstone
United Methodist Church located at 18081 West Road. You can bring
your donations by Monday-Thursday 9 AM-4 PM or contact the church
office to schedule a time to pick up the shoes. All donated shoes will then
be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of microenterprise
partners in developing nations. Funds2Orgs helps impoverished people
start, maintain and grow businesses in countries such as Haiti, Honduras
and other nations in Central America and Africa. Proceeds from the shoe
sales are used to feed, clothe and house their families. One budding
entrepreneur in Haiti even earned enough to send to her son to law
school. By donating shoes to Cornerstone United Methodist Church, the
shoes will be given a second chance and make a difference in people’s
lives. For more information or questions about the shoe drive, please
contact Scott Grow at [email protected] or contact the church
office at 281-859-4141.

“I’m In PAIN”
Can Chiropractic Help ME ?
We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor
of chiropractic can help my problem?”
We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and
examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete
consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary,
(procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00.
We will make this special program available through July. The only exception
to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents)
in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
