Fine Arts Committee

The Fine Arts Committee at San Juan College was established in 1983
to encourage and support cultural activities at San Juan College and the
community. Members of the committee participate in the local arts scene,
establishing a strong tradition in the community.
The committee promotes participation and appreciation of the arts through
a variety of services and programs, including the Young Artists Recital,
student scholarships, artist invitational exhibits, art workshops, special
music events and purchases of art for the permanent collection.

their parents through joyful activities, using music and movement. Parents learn about child’s developmental process; child associates learning
with fun, musical play and parent bond. B.A. in speech communication

needs, extensive experience working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Cerebral Palsy and Down’s Syndrome. Native of Iowa,
attended ENMU (Portales) for four years studying music, theatre and
entertainment. “My teaching goal is that students have a love of music
and confidence in their ability to play their instrument. Because of my
concentration on these two things, I do not have recitals nor encourage
participation in competitions. I believe all students can work at their
own pace and according to their ability. I use a variety of curricula to
make sure students grow in their love of all kinds and styles of music
and have an understanding of how music is created.” Prefer daytime

keyboards, guitar, recorder, mandolin, pennywhistle, ukulele. “My
schedule is variable, so I try to reciprocate by being flexible and accommodating students’ schedules. I teach playing by ear and improvisation for jazz, rock, country, blues, New Age, folk and world music,
using aural and visual imitation, improvisation exercises, note-reading,
and music theory grounded in the music being studied.” Also available
as piano accompanist for vocal and instrumental soloists. Performs
professionally in concerts, festivals, musical theatre and educational
setting. Have CDs, solos and with a variety of singers and groups.

Adventures Series (Faber and Faber) supplemented with classical
music. Provide a strong foundation in technique (scales, etc.) and teach
improvisation. “The study of music teaches self-discipline, poise,
confidence in performance, concentration and the ability to communicate and express ideas beyond the spoken word. In order to develop
these skills in the student, the parent, student, and teacher must work
together purposefully and thoughtfully. We emphasize both the delight
and the discipline of music focusing on developing the relationships
that are essential to learning the art of music.”
