Our May Faire Arrives –
Next Week!
The 1st and 2nd grade classes are the main organizers for
Summerfield’s annual May Faire – slated this year for Friday,
May 1st. An initial meeting was held on the Thursday before
Spring Break, so we could get our wheels turning. Now, after
the Break, we only have two weeks left to prepare – not much
time! We’ll continue meeting on Thursday mornings, after
drop-off (8:45am-9:30-ish), and we warmly request the participation of first and second grade parents, as well as parents
from other classes who are willing to be involved. We will
meet on Thursday, April 23rd, but probably by the time you
read this, there will only be one meeting date left – April
30th, the day prior to the faire! Please join us on any Thursday morning that you are able, at 8:45am, in the main office,
to help plan and stage this year’s festival.
We envision a fun Mayday to gather, relax, and play together on our lovely spring-time campus. The community is
being asked to take on the following tasks: 1st & 2nd grade
are the “organizers” and may, perhaps, also lead a game; 3rd
through 6th grade will plan and staff a game or activity; the
7th & 11th grades will prepare and sell food as fundraisers
for their classes – serving strawberry shortcake, drinks, and
an evening meal; and the general pool of parent volunteers
are needed as decorators, musicians, parking attendants and
cleaner-uppers. Please speak to Leslie Young in the office
if you can help with any of this. We also hope to have the
festivities graced by our annual high school May Queen &
Court. If you have any little “chachkies” to donate for the

pocket lady’s “deep pockets” (e.g. polished stones, feathers,
bells, shells, marbles, etc.), we could use them.
We need masses of FLOWERS and VINES for decorations and head garlands, so please scout out gardens or natural areas you can harvest from. Bring your donations to place
in the plastic, water-filled buckets at the bottom of the main
stairs to the parking lot or in front of the office on Friday
morning, May 1st, or by the set-up for the event – 1:00pm.
The schedule of the day will be as follows: Between
1:30 and 3pm, during school hours, there will be flower
garland-making and maypole dancing to live music with all
the students (no cell phone or video camera use, please);
at 2:55pm, the dismissal bell will ring, there will be a short
break and, after that, a variety of games/activities will occur,
along with food and drink being served up until 6pm or so.
Parents must accompany and supervise their children who
attend the faire after 3pm. The event will be located on the
grassy lawns by the Office. This is our final opportunity of the
school year for all families to be together and celebrate the
season and our great community! We look forward to deep,
mutual enrichment through this festival participation.

Fundraiser Planned for
Roots & Shoots Family
On May 23rd, a fundraiser is being held at Summerfield to help the Ott family rebuild from the fire in their home. A fun
family evening (with early hours for the young ones), including dinner, music, and folk dancing, will take place in Sophia Hall.
A raffle for beautiful handmade items will also be part of the offerings. Please put it on your calendar. Details with the exact

As reported in the February 5th Messenger, Yvette Simmone (mother of Maria Theresa Ott and wife of Anthony) was badly
burned in the early morning hours of January 18th when their family’s mobile home on Willowside Road was engulfed by
flames. The home was subsequently destroyed. The 2nd degree burns that Yvette received on 30% of her body necessitated a
stay at the St. Francis Burn Center and two surgeries plus skin grafts. She now in long-term physical therapy, and the family is
staying in a temporary residence, hoping to have their home back in the near future. Let’s help them out!

How Can I Help?
As we are reaching out to share how amazing our school

who might be able to come to our Farm to Feast event. Visit
the development office and pick up a packet that promotes
our event. All the proceeds go to our Tuition Assistance
Program, so selling tickets, attending, or just reaching out
to individuals outside our school supports our Summerfield

When my husband and I decided to transfer to Summerfield Waldorf from the East Bay Waldorf School we knew
that we were joining a beautiful school with an incredible
staff. Now that I have had the opportunity to serve as the
Procurement Team Leader for our Farm to Feast Auction, I
see just how lucky we are to have found such an amazingly
supportive community. I would like to thank our parents and
staff for procuring and/ or giving so generously to our F2F
auction. Even though we find ourselves in trying times, we
have doubled the amount of auction items from last year! It
has been an honor to serve this school and its community,
and I feel grateful to be a part of such a generous group. I
would also like to thank the many volunteers and staff who
selflessly gave of their time and talents. I feel so blessed to be
a part of the Summerfield community!

Circus Waldissima
Thanks to all of the teachers, parents, grandparents, office
staff and friends who gave their loving support to Circus
Waldissima! We appreciate your work making costumes,
selling food, making & selling tickets, ushering, setting up,
cleaning up, parking cars, providing snacks for the performers and more. We couldn’t have had such great shows
without you all!

talented instructors for their hard work and dedication.

It’s grown hot now and, thus, many coats, sweaters and
hats have been eagerly shed by the children. These items of
clothing have lain, forlorn, upon our playing fields, being
wetted by rain and dried out by sun, eventually finding their
way into our trusty Lost & Found receptacle. This is a large
wooden box located outside the office, easily found and explored. Please search for your children’s belongings in there,
or they may disappear forever - to be donated to charity in a
couple of weeks’ time. We can’t fit anything else in there now,
so what’s there must go!!!!

We will hear about the school year’s accomplishments and
future goals from our Board President, Jefferson Buller, and
will hold an election for parent Board members. Anyone may
attend, but only those who are corporation members (who’ve
signed The Statement) may vote in the election. You may
easily become a member by signing the official Corporation
Member Statement prior to the election— it will be available
in the main office and at the meeting. The nominees for the
parent-elect Board seats this year are Allan Arntz, Ivo Austin
and Marshall Behling. We hope to see you all on Monday
evening for this once-a-year important general meeting!

Hearing Screening on May 20th
Summerfield encourages all students in the early grades to have their hearing checked regularly. We have therefore set up the
morning hours of Wednesday, May 20, for an audiologist to come to our campus to particularly test all kindergarteners going
on to first grade, any new students, and any teacher-referred students. The individual screenings, which take about 10 minutes
each, will be performed by Marina Mulvey, M.A. Audiologist, of Millennium Hearing Services Inc., of Santa Rosa, for a $14
charge. Results will be given to the school and parents. A letter which details the procedure and includes a registration form
will be placed in the files (in front of the classrooms) of those students whom we are requesting to participate. We sincerely
hope that you take advantage of this convenient health-evaluation opportunity for your child. Especially in the lower grades,
the teachers find current and accurate information regarding their students’ hearing to be invaluable. It is also fine to have your
child examined privately, by a specialist of your choice, but we ask that you then, please, provide the office with a copy of this
report for the student’s file. Thank you.

Celebrating Our Land with Seeds
In preparation for Summerfield’s 2nd annual Our Mother Land Celebration, scheduled for September 8, 2009, the Land
Stewardship Committee is initiating a “Summerfield Seed Bank”. We are asking that each student shepherd a favorite plant
through its development into seed-formation, then gather these special seeds and bring them to school in the fall. Tracy has
special seed envelopes in the office. On the envelope, you will need to put the name of the plant, a simple picture, and your
name. By sharing your favorite seeds with others, there will be an abundance of seeds available for you to take away, as well. It
is our hope that we can preserve diversity and share with each other the fruits of our labor. There are many stories behind seeds
– memories, family favorites, likes, dislikes, etc. Be it food or flowers, seeds are the soul of agriculture. As Claire Hope Cummings says in her book Uncertain Peril, “I want to respect this plant’s productive cycle.” Let’s gather our seeds and share our
abundance and diversity as a thriving community!

Photo Re-takes on May 4th
By now, you will have received your children’s photos
from Sari Singerman. If there is anything wrong with the picture, you may ask for a re-take from the photographer at no
charge. This definition of “wrong” includes an open mouth,
tongue showing, shut or squinting eyes, or something messed
up about the hair or clothing – NOT just that you don’t care
for the expression or the shirt that was worn. Please request
this service for something that is fairly serious, and not just
on a whim. To schedule a re-take, please call the office, and
let either Tracy or Leslie know that you need it. The re-take
date will be Monday, May 4th, from 10am to noon; the location will be by the Sophia Hall kitchen.

Farm Camp Registration Continues
The first week of Farm Camp for the 6-9 year olds is now
full. There are still spaces for the 4-5 year olds and 6-9 year
olds in all other sessions, but camp is filling up quickly.
New this summer is Permaculture Camp, where there are
still spaces available for your 10-12 year old children. Permaculture camp runs Monday-Friday, from 8:30am-3:00pm,
the weeks of July 13th - July 17th or July 20th-July 24th,.
Please turn in your registration forms and payment soon,
so that your child will have a guaranteed place in this summer’s Farm Camp. Forms are available in the lower school
office, the finance office, on our web site, or by calling Karen
at 575-7194, ext. 370.

The Heart & Soul of Money: John Bloom
of the Rudolf Steiner Foundation will offer
an evening presentation and conversation
to explore the connection between money
and spirit on a personal as well as systemic
level. It will be held on Wed., May 20,
at the Cafe Ekonomia #2 in the French
Garden Restaurant & Bistro - 5:30pm for
the reception, special menu & drinks; 7pm
for the presentation & slides. From the
perspective of day-to-day experience, we
will explore how we view and work with
money and financial transactions, and further how we can change our relationship
to the existing financial system. This will
be a highly participatory and dialogical
experience. There will be a $5 charge.
Help Sought for Anthroposophical
Training for Local Doctor: Terri Turner,
D.O., who has been an integrative osteopathic physician practicing in Sonoma
County for over 13 years, is trying to raise
$780 to take the International Postgraduate Course in Anthroposophical Medicine that will be held in Petaluma this
May 8-15. By completing this course, she
will then be able to facilitate care for the
anthroposophical community (i.e. our
Waldorf schools!) in Sonoma County
and beyond. Terri Turner is a very highly
regarded doctor whose wholistic view and
methods are known to many in our community. She is Board Certified in Internal
Medicine & Osteopathic Care, has been
the Director of the ICU at Palm Drive
Hospital in Sebastopol, and is currently
their Hospitalist, caring for patients and
spearheading an Integrative Medicine
campaign there. The problem is that she
is one of 30% of physicians who have
not been paid in the U.S. for Medicare
since April of 2008, and she needs some
financial help to attend this training. For
