Points of Interest 1 The Hideout at Scare Canyon The Ogden River Scenic Byway 5460 East 2200 North (P.O. Box 252) Eden, UT 84310 (801) 745-2550 One of only 26 designated Scenic Byways in the State of Utah, the Ogden River Scenic Byway begins at the mouth of Ogden Canyon and travels east into the Upper Ogden Valley. The Byway circles Pineview Reservoir and passes through Eden and Huntsville. This beautiful drive continues south over Trappers Loop (Highway 167) into Mountain Green and Weber Canyon. The route may soon obtain National Scenic Byway designation, and extend into the pristine Monte Cristo area. You will see many of the following vistas, wonders, sites, and venues as you travel the Byway. North Ogden Pass - looking southeast into the Upper Ogden Valley, best seen at sunrise; looking southwest into Ogden City, best seen at sunset. Causey Reservoir - super water and mountain views. Powder Mountain Road and Powder Ridge Road – views galore, including the Uinta Mountains of northeast Utah. Top of Monte Cristo - stunning vistas while driving west on Highway 39, looking down into South Fork Canyon and the Upper Ogden Valley. Wasatch Fault - visible at the mouth of Ogden Canyon, southeast of Rainbow Gardens. Shoshone Bear Cave - natural shelter near hot springs. Indian Thermal Hot Springs – with a temperature of 142° F, native people used the springs between 1000 AD and 1850. Ogden Canyon Narrows - rock cliffs that originally made the Upper Ogden Valley inaccessible, best seen when traveling down Ogden Canyon looking west at dusk: - Sleeping Beauty - north side of Canyon just west of The Cobbles at Lewis Grove. - Nelly’s Nipple - south side of Ogden Canyon just east of Peery’s Camp. - Indian Head Penny Profile - north side of Ogden Canyon just west of Peery Camp. Z Plate Formation - southeast of Gray Cliff Lodge, only two are visible in the entire world. Lake Bonneville Inland Sea and Shale Seashell Slide. Artesian Wells - Ogden City water source beneath Pineview Reservoir. Ancient Lake Bonneville Shoreline - 10,300 years ago - visible at various locations in Ogden Canyon and Upper Ogden Valley. Red Rock Formations in South Fork Canyon - spectacular iron red canyon cliffs, a stunning sample of Southern Utah. Fremont discovered the Great Salt Lake here, as many theories suggest. 1848 - Brigham Young first fished at the Mouth of Ogden Canyon and sent Thomas Abbot on the first expedition up Weber Canyon to explore the Upper Ogden Valley. 1849 - Captain Stansburry US Geological Survey, entered the Upper Ogden Valley at South Fork. 1850 - Jefferson Hunt established Huntsville Fort, the first compound. 1854 - North Ogden Pass opened to summer settlers and range cattle. 1859 - The town of Eden established. 1860 - The town of Huntsville established and first toll road up Ogden Canyon opened - Historical Marker. 1861 - Robert Aldous built the first log cabin in Huntsville - Historical Marker. 1873 - The Hermitage Hotel Site: 1873 - First sawmill operated on Hermitage site. 1905 - Famous Hermitage Hotel opened. Destroyed by fire in 1939. 1873 - David O McKay House - National and Utah Historic Registers, famous President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. 1892 - The town of Liberty established.
