synopsis
Peter’s got some problems, mostly of his own making. Beset by recent tragedy, Peter drinks his way to selfdestruction by way of whiskey, vodka, and well, anything he can get his hands on. But he’s not alone. Told mostly
through the eyes of his friends and fellow partiers, Peter struggles to understand loss and abandonment. As a
denizen in a city filled with people looking for answers and finding distractions instead, Peter succumbs to these
habits in his desperate search for closure and release. Occasionally funny and often sad, Beautiful Fools leaves us
raising a glass to being young, lost, and of course...foolish.

director’s statement
These past few years have been drenched in personal and professional failures,
the kind of crippling losses that make you feel like you’re not gonna make it. The
years left me riddled with what felt like bullets, each one taking a chunk of me as
they passed. The creative parts of me were carted off to some deep and dark place,
and what was left just went through the motions. Professional help, psychiatric
medication, making worse choices on top of already bad ones, vice and excess
-- none of those things seemed to help me. I felt abandoned and betrayed. Forced
into a holding pattern where the things and people I loved faded into obscurity
while life moved forward with a tight grip around my chest, crushing me with every
step.
I used to think that when you deluded yourself into believing that you’re some
sort of “artist,” you’d be protected from the real world. You’d get to be a petulant child for your entire life. Your 9-to-5
consists of going to Nanny’s nursery, like the muppet-babies, where you and your friends create worlds just like
our own, but better, using toys and your collective imagination. Your stories will be told, to an audience that will
connect with them. Your characters and your collaborators will live forever. You believe that as an artist, the gifts you
inherited or cultivated will make you and your loved ones indestructible.
But the truth is that no matter who you are or what you do, you’ll always be susceptible to the shitty and sticky. No
one is safe and it’s scary.
That fear will tell you to surrender and submit. It’ll tell you to go through the motions of being a drunk, or to see a
quack, or to change your chemicals, and you’ll hope that those things will fix all your problems. They won’t. But at
some point, those parts you thought you lost to the dark and deep will find you again, and you’ll realize that while
creativity alone won’t make you invincible, it’ll at least give you some ammo. The kind of ammo that makes for fun
battles...even if they’re the kind you won’t survive.
To say that the show “Beautiful Fools” is about me is a misrepresentation. It’s about pain and everything that’s
funny about it and everything that’s sad about it. It’s about the hurt everyone feels every day. It’s about pain that
never disappears, no matter how old you get, and pain you never want to let go of, no matter what answers you
might find if you do. It’s about our collective desire to understand those feelings so that we’re not alone. We’re not
indestructible and that’s okay, in fact, it’s good!
Making this show with my nearest and dearest and for all of the special loved ones that have come and gone was
more inspiring and comforting than any 60-minute session I could ever have with a board-certified professional. It
gave me more answers than I could ever find at the bottom of any booze or pill bottle. It made me realize that the
shit is just shit. But without it, we can’t find hope. Now, it’s my hope that anyone who stumbles upon this thing might
come to the same realizations and, with any luck, understand that they’re not alone either.
