A Letter from the Editors
What Are You Excited For This Summer?!
Well. Here we are again. Trust.
Knowledge. Those small bottles of
shampoo from cheap hotels. These
are the pillars on which our fine
institution stands with pride.
Which institution is that, you may
be asking yourself. The Mosquito.
The source of all news. Shining a
spotlight on the top events and
issues at Camp Manitou. The
Mosquito: Where we don’t bite
your arm, but we give you bites….of
knowledge. The Mosquito: Where,
just like our insect friends, we buzz
in your ears and annoy you.
Let’s get down to brass tactics.
We’re gonna rock this joint from
here to kingdom come, and if you
think those old fogeys (yeah, we’re
talking about you Jackson) are
gonna stop us, you’ve got another
thing coming.
We’re here to deliver hard hitting
news and chew bubble gum…and
we’re all out of bubble gum.
We asked some cabins what they were excited for
this summer, and here is what they said!
-The play
-Baseball
-Waterski
-Radio
-Sports
-The new food

First Year? What To Expect!
By Sophie Greenspoon
Is it your first year at Camp Manitou? Do you know
what to expect your first year here? I bet not. But
don’t worry! I’m going to tell you what to expect.
The first thing you will expect is meeting your
counselors when you get off the bus. You may also
have made a few friends on the bus ride up. But
don’t expect your bags to be unpacked in your
cabin…you have to do that! But by the end of your
first year, you will probably be screaming…
XOXO

King Mark vs King Jeff
Could a Monarchy Battle Be The End
of a Beautiful Friendship?
THE MOSQUITO LOGO CONTEST!
There are always new and exciting things
happening around Camp Manitou, and at
Newspaper we are thrilled to announce a
new contest! We will be holding a
competition to see who can design a new
logo for the camp newspaper. So get
drawing and enter your submissions now!
By Jaymie, Carter, Seth, and Layla
Earlier this week, an old feud was
rekindled: Mark vs Jeff. This was no
battle of wits or simple sports
competition. This was for the crown.
The state of the camp’s monarchy is in
your hands, campers!
Interview with Tess
By Stella G.
Who is going to win: King Jeff or King
Mark? Do you want double tuck or
fruits and vegetables? No dessert or
dessert? Your choice…
Q: How would you feel if you had
chicken every night for dinner?
A: I’d feel very grateful to have
food on my plate.
Our top political experts at The
Mosquito said, “Mark is fun and gives
more candy, but Jeff has a sound fiscal
strategy.”
Q: If you got to choose how much
tuck we got, how much tuck would
you give us?
A: Double!
It’s still early and we will have to see
how this plays out, and we have our
top reporters on the case. Below is a
camper poll of who they want to be
King of Camp Manitou.
Q: What unit do you like the most?
(Be honest.)
A: Freshkids!
Mark: 35
Q:What is your favourite camp day
of the week?
A: Thursday.
Jeff: 17
Did You Know?
-Cows are prehistoric creatures.
-Carrots are good for improving eyesight and badminton skills.
-Pinky and the Brain is the #1 television show of all time and no one can tell me otherwise.
-There are 72 camels at Camp Manitou. They’re just hiding.
-The best creatures for harvesting honey are bees and Pooh Bears.

The One Who Got Away
By Lia Telem
Overheard at Manitou
Hilarious things are said all over camp
every day and we want to share them
with all of you!
If you hear a joke, a comment, or a
story that made you laugh, come and
share it with us at The Mosquito.
Prologue
Once, in the darkest place that ever existed,
were all the terrible lords and kings. Also wizards that
were good but were on a spell. Out of all of these terrible
people was the one who started it all, who made them
bad: The King. The King was a horrible person and all he
wanted was for the bad to rule the whole world.
This week at Newspaper we were all
in stitches when a camper tried to
correct someone’s grammar and said
this:
On the happy side of the world were all the glad
and kind people. The King of the Good had an idea how
to defeat the bad. He said all the brave people will gather
and make an army. That army will fight the Bad King;
without the Bad King, all the wizards will get rid of their
spells. The good will win!
“You don’t got right grammar!”
Come and share your overheard
comments!
To be continued…..

The MHL is Back!

MHL Season. This year there are 12 teams, with some new

many years of absence. The captains and players are gearing
up for an exciting season and love the cheering campers who
always send good vibes to the teams!
Who will YOU cheer for?
Pink Panthers
Lobster Traps
Slayers
Marky’s Marlies
Parry Sound Pterodactyls
Golden Seals

This week interviewer Marlo Barish
enlisted Seth Davis (Copy Editor
and Inanimate Object
Conversationalist) to assist her in
an interview with one of the chairs
at Newspaper.
The chair was shy and not very
talkative, but Marlo and all of us
here think it was riveting stuff.

New Camp Song!
What Kind of Swim Should There Be?
An Opinion Piece By Maia Simmons
We all know and love the Manitou
song we sing at Friday Night Fireside
every week, but here is a new, fun
alternative! (For sheet music, please
contact the editors of The Mosquito).
Should there be instructional swim?
After considering both sides, I strongly
believe it should always be free swim.
Free swim lets children be free and
learn to swim by themselves. The kids
can also have fun and play feely. That is
why I strongly believe there should not
be instructional swim. An alternative is
there could be free swim every other
day!
Hey Manitou, hey Manitou!
Manitou, tou!
You can get your sweatshirt,
And then your grab your socks,
But don’t forget your bugspray!
I’m going to the dentist.

Yesterday, the Toronto Blue Jays lost in the 19 inning! Ryan Going had great pitching in the 18 , but
sadly the Jays lost 2-1.
2) Back Door Controversy
Some of the back doors in the boys cabins have been blocked for safety reasons, so we interviewed Zach
Friedman, a first year counselor of B20, about this situation. He’s say that, “it’s terrible and dangerous.
Any campers exiting or entering there will be in big trouble.” However, a poll shows that 95% of campers
want a back door.
3) Yesterday we had a power outage. This power outage stopped things from charging, showers from
running and, worst of all, toilets stopped working! But the power outage followed with a yummy chicken
dinner.
Question of the Day
Here at The Mosquito we ask the tough questions, and so every day we ask every period a Question of the Day. This week we asked
some thinkers! Below are some of the week’s questions and answers.

Edyn: A Sonnet
By Shayla Swartz
You dream a thousand dreams,
Yet that is all they are,
We wish for so much,
Yet that is all it is, wishes,
We walk many miles,
Yet do they amount to anything?
We breathe many breaths,
Yet they are only a waste of air,
Unless your dreams become reality,
Unless those wishes come true,
Unless those miles are towards a proper goal,
Unless we use those breaths wisely,
Because dreams die out,
Because wishes are silenced,
Because those miles are usually towards something you
don’t want,
Because breaths are numbered.

A Survey on Fruits
By Ava Gandy and Abbey Tropepe
We asked some campers and staff if they
liked watermelon or pineapple more and
here are the answers!
Watermelon: 23
WOOHOO! Time sure flies when you’re having fun…and when
you’re counting down the days until camp! When that last school
bell rang, I ran out of the door and almost ran all the way to camp
I was so excited! Just kidding! But I am really, really, really, really
happy to be back! It’s now my 15th year at camp and I sure am
glad! All my favourite staff are back like Ben Kim (he plays the
piano), Dave Sheffe (but we call him Luigi), and Jackson (he’s a
dog)! Plus my pals Dustin and Sam are back and we tried the
brand new activity Culinary Arts and we made granola and usually
I don’t like granola but this had chocolate in it so I liked this
granola a whole lot. Well, looks like I have to go because the bell is
ringing for lunch and I love the salad bar….mmmm feta! Tata for
now as they say!
Pineapple: 11

Does Chef Gates Open the Gates or Close Them?
By The Manitou Food Critics
We are so sad Chef Serge left Camp Manitou, but fortunately Chef Gates has now become part of our Manitou
family. Considering the meals we have had so far, we think the rest of the food will be GREAT! Let’s see what other
campers and staff think….
9 people say they like the food, and 10 even think it’s amazing!
Most people think the food can only get better from here, and we think so too!
What Do People Think About Puppies?
By Danielle Gross
Molly’s Lying Eyebrows
By Sea Ray
Finley: Well, I really like them. They are fuzzy
and cute.
There once was a girl named Molly
iBrowson, who had the most fantastic eyebrows
in the world. Every morning, Molly iBrowson
would go to the mirror and groom each eyebrow
hair to utter perfection. Molly iBrowson was
goals. Molly did have the best eyebrows you’d
ever seen. But the one thing about Molly
was…she was a riddled liar. She spoke more lies
than sentences. One night, while Molly iBrowson
was asleep, she had a nightmare. Her nemesis
Sapphire shaved off her eyebrows for lying too
much. Molly woke up in a sweat and held her
eyebrows until she fell asleep. The entire cabin
woke up at 7:45am sharp. Sapphire slept on the
bunk beside Molly and looked at her new phase.
“Oh my god Molly, you look hairless! Haha this is
incredible!” squealed Sapphire.
Molly was confused. She ran to the
mirror. “What?! Who did this!?” she fumed. Her
eyebrows, her perfect beautiful eyebrows, were
gone. It was all forehead now. “Sapphire, you did
this, didn’t you? Where are my eyebrows?”
Sapphire was laughing non-stop. “Definitely not
on your face! Oh my…” Molly was infuriated.
“I’m telling on you!” Sapphire froze in her place.
“You’re telling on me? I did not do this.” “Then
who did?” Molly asked accusingly. Everyone
began laughing and blaming and yelling, except
for Molly’s best friend Skylar who was sitting on
her bed with the most fantastic, beautiful
eyebrows groomed to perfection that you ever
did see.
Paige: I think puppies are the best things in the
world. I don’t trust people that don’t like
puppies.
Julie: I love puppies.
Shayla: They’re cute!
Edyn: I love puppies.
Seth: Um, undecided.
Spencer: Meh.
Max: They’re slippery and fuzzy.
Maren: They are cute and fluffy.
Olivia: They are cute.
Lisa: OH MY GOD!!!
Kaitlyn: I love them.
Lilly: They’re cute.
Maia: I like them.
Megan: I think puppies are really cute and
fluffy.
Now I know that everyone loves puppies,
except for some people like Seth and Spencer.

Why I Come Back To Camp Each Year
By Sabrina Packer
Camp. 4 letters, millions of fun memories. I choose to come back to
camp each year because of 3 amazing things that camp has to offer.
Friends, activities and, of course, food. Let me get started on what the
incredible food has to offer. With our new chef, Gates, we have plenty
new food items like Mac and cheese and different desserts. The new
Mac and cheese is creamier, cheesier, and BAKED! How amazing is
that? Secondly, I think that camp is all about making new friends.
Whether it be meeting new people or rejoicing with friends from past
years, friends are definitely an important part of camp. So, make new
friends and try new activities. Speaking of activities, I love to enjoy a
multitude of activities. I enjoy sports and the arts, so that I am able to
enjoy all aspects of camp. No matter what you enjoy at camp, have
fun and have an awesome summer! Remember, this year is going to
be the best summer ever!
