There’s no denying the increase in demand and/or
interest in non-meat foods. Whatever the reason (desire
to eat more plant-based foods for health reasons, add
more veggies, animal welfare, food safety, etc.), there is
definitely growing interest. I know in my own department,
there are several vegetarians. At our most recent test
kitchen sampling of new Wegmans brand products,
Veggie Burgers were front and center. The supplier is
Good Wives, producer of Wegmans frozen appetizers.
During my November visit to their facility in Wilmington,
MA (near Boston), the president mentioned that they
were in development of really good-tasting veggie
burgers. And so… here we are introducing them in May.
Our new Veggie Burgers are quarter pounders, in some
interesting combinations—each one moist and very tasty.
How about the vegan Caramelized Onion & Garbanzo
Beans burger, with artichokes and sunflower seeds for
good measure? There is a Portabella Mushroom burger
with a blend of Pecorino Romano and Parmesan cheeses.
Also my own favorite, the Southwest Black Bean, with hot
peppers, corn and Monterey Jack cheese. All these are
Food You Feel Good About, meaning no artificial colors,
flavors or preservatives. They’re convenient to pull out of
the freezer and cook on stovetop, oven or grill. Stovetop
time would be about 15 minutes. Or for grilling, 18-20
minutes. Microwaving not recommended.
