Media Contacts table of contents Our Story: When a serious climbing accident left him with six permanent screws in his shattered ankle, CorePower Yoga Founder and CEO Trevor Tice experienced first hand the transformational benefits of yoga. An avid outdoorsman from Telluride, CO, Trevor was left searching for an exercise to replace the running, climbing and other physically challenging activities no longer accessible to him. He found yoga, and was hooked. Traveling for his technology business, Trevor practiced a variety of yoga disciplines at yoga studios across the country and found an opportunity to make yoga dynamic, challenging and accessible. In 2002, Trevor opened the first CorePower Yoga studio on Grant Street in downtown Denver, Colorado, offering a proprietary form of athletic, heated yoga in modern, welcoming and spa-like studios. With six teachers, including Trevor, teaching four classes per day, it took several arduous months before classes began to fill up. But they did. And it wasn’t long before people were talking about this new Yoga. Our Mission: Share our authentic passion for yoga and healthy living to inspire everyone to live their most extraordinary life. Key Milestones: 2004: CorePower Yoga acquires South Boulder, Cherry Hills and Broadway studios in Colorado. Tim Johnson and Brandon Cox become part-owners. 2004: First CPY Power Yoga Teacher Training held at the Grant Street studio in Denver with nearly 30 participants. Some of these first Teacher Training graduates are regional managers and studio managers today. 2005: With a few established studios in Colorado, CPY acquired its first Portland Studio (Portland Northwest) and opened its first studio in Minneapolis. 2006: CorePower Yoga – Point Loma opens in San Diego, CA 2007: CorePower Yoga introduced The Nutrition Program in Denver, providing yoga students with a supportive yogic cleanse and the tools to understand how eating habits can fuel their yoga and their life. 2008: CorePower Yoga - South Loop, Chicago, opens. 2009: CPY continued to expand its Teacher Training and Lifestyle Program offerings. 2010: Chicago and California opened 3 new studios, with Minnesota, Boulder & Denver each adding one. CPY will also be opening a brand new Corporate Headquarters and flagship studio in the Highlands neighborhood of Denver. About CPY Our story 1 Who is CPY? Every CorePower Yoga employee is passionate about health, vitality and about the mind-body connection created by the CPY practice. We are passionate about being part of a health-focused company where individuals are not bound by conventional ideas of body and mind. All of our studio managers started as CPY students who completed the Teacher Training Program and were inspired to become more invested in the business. All regional managers were once studio managers. And our corporate team is comprised of dedicated yoga practitioners and yoga teachers. Key people who help make it all come together: Trevor Tice, Founder & CEO An unlikely candidate for owning yoga studios, Trevor opened the first CorePower Yoga in Denver in 2002, and filled a niche in an emerging yoga market. His goal? To create an empowering and healthfocused environment where individuals are not bound by conventional ideas about the limits of body and mind. Prior to CorePower Yoga, Trevor owned TechPartners International, a $60 million dollar IT company he sold to a public UK firm in 2001. He received a degree in Business from the University of Colorado, and serves on the Board of Directors for MindBody Online and BridgeView IT. He is a member of the Young Presidents Organization and received the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year® 2010 Award in the Retail & Consumer Products category in the Rocky Mountain region. In 2011, Trevor Tice and CorePower Yoga received the ACG Emerging Corporate Growth Award, an honor given to companies with annual sales lass than $100 million that have demonstrated steady growth for three consecutive years. An avid believer in giving back, Trevor formed CorePower Cares, a nonprofit organization that leverages the generosity of the CPY community to support a myriad of philanthropic causes, most recently supporting the Japan relief effort. Trevor approaches challenges with “yes, we can – go do it”, encouraging all employees to explore new ideas. An avid yoga practitioner and teacher, he visits at least one CPY studio every day, providing positive feedback to instructors and managers. About CPY Our Management Team 3 Holly Georgelos, Marketing Director Prior to joining CorePower Yoga in 2006, Holly worked for Gap, Inc. in San Francisco within Old Navy’s marketing department, leading creative teams in developing advertising and marketing campaigns that delivered upon overall business objectives. Key milestones include: launching Old Navy’s first newspaper circular, rolling-out the Old Navy Account credit card program, and managing the strategic and creative development of print and broadcast marketing for Old Navy’s launch in Canada. Holly found herself in her first yoga class at a small studio in San Francisco, as a supplement to her running and gym workouts. While she appreciated the benefits, she wasn’t truly hooked on the practice until she found herself in a CorePower Yoga class in 2004. Holly completed CorePower Yoga’s teacher training program in 2007, and she is thrilled that her career now blends her passions of marketing and yoga. Holly’s marketing & advertising career started at McClain Finlon Advertising in Denver. Holly graduated Cum Laude from Miami University and received a master’s degree from the University of Denver. Sara Rice, Director of Retail Operations Sara’s career as the National Retail Logistics Manager began in 2007 as CorePower Yoga expanded into markets across the nation. With a background in sales, marketing and retail, Sara flourished in the challenge of developing her career in an environment in which she was passionate. Embracing various sports at a young age, Sara identified strongly with running, hiking, lacrosse and telemark skiing - all of which are still present in life today. After finishing her undergraduate degree and earning and All American title in lacrosse, Sara struggled with how to stay physically challenged. When she turned passionately to yoga in 2000, Sara noticed immediately that the practice of yoga had made her a stronger athlete physically and mentally - little did she know that this practice would transform her life and career one day. Sara graduated from Colorado College Cum Laude with degrees in Economics, Political Science and a minor in Spanish. She completed her master’s degree from the University of Colorado in Educational Psychology. Sara completed her CorePower Yoga Teacher Training in Fall of 2008 and teaches at the Colorado Boulevard Studio in Colorado. She lives with her husband, Will, and their dog Brooker just west of City Park. About CPY Our Management Team 4 Tim Johnson, Director Tim Johnson has served as Partner and Director for CorePower Yoga since 2004. His responsibilities include the overall design and development of all studios, development and oversight of Lifestyle Programs across the nation and the business development and operations of studios in Colorado. Brandon Cox, Regional Director (Colorado) With a fast-paced job in Denver, Brandon found that his work was taking over his life. Demands at the office were creating less room for ‘being’. Thanks to his Aunt, Brandon found himself in a hot and humid room, getting ready to take his first Bikram class in 1997. After exploring other styles of yoga, Brandon left his corporate job and traveled to Los Angeles to study with Bikram Choudhury. His passion for yoga had transformed into a career; and after returning to Colorado he helped spawn the birth of CorePower Yoga. About CPY Our Management Team 5 Heather Peterson, Regional Director (West Coast) Heather excels at teaching dynamic, inspiring yoga classes and creating and leading powerful Lifestyle Programs. In 2004, Heather helped to create the CorePower Yoga Hot Yoga Teacher Training curriculum and became adjunct faculty for CorePower Yoga Teacher Training across the country in specialty areas of Sanskrit, Ayurveda, Chakras and Meditation. She then went on to develop and lead the CorePower Yoga Nutrition Program nationally. Kari Ament, Regional Director (Midwest) Kari came to CorePower Yoga in 2008 with over 14 years of media and sales management experience. She oversees the studio operations and strategic direction of the Midwest Region. She is passionate about developing leaders and creating world class customer experiences that facilitate meaningful change and growth. Kari’s yoga practice began 12 years ago, and that sacred practice time was the catalyst for making a major career change - to one that is now in true harmony with her passion for business, yoga, and service to others. Kari is devoted to CorePower Yoga, the students it serves, and the lives that the CPY team transforms. In her spare time you can find Kari teaching and practicing yoga, CorePower Ryding, hanging with her family, or rooting her kids on in one of their many activities. Physical Benefits: • Increase strength, balance & flexibility • Increase energy & vitality • Lose weight • Cross-train for other athletic pursuits • Detox the body Emotional Benefits: • Reduce stress • Increase self-confidence • Connect more deeply with loved ones and your community • Gain a stronger sense of Self • Increase sense of calm Why is the studio heated? The majority of CorePower Yoga classes are taught in heated yoga rooms. The heat helps stretch muscle fibers and tendons and aids in injury prevention. CorePower Yoga asks that you listen to your body and determine the intensity that works best for you in each pose and class. Benefits of practicing in a heated yoga room: • Eliminate toxins from your body through sweat • Increase your heart rate for added challenge • Enhance metabolism to promote weight loss • Increase circulation for an efficient, cardiovascular total-body workout FAQ’s 10 Can beginners attend CorePower Yoga classes? Yes. We welcome all levels and abilities. We recommend all beginners start with a CorePower Yoga Level One class. This Power Vinyasa class is unheated and allows the beginner to experience a common CorePower Yoga flow. We recommend a beginner take 5-10 CorePower Yoga Level One classes before moving on to other CorePower Yoga classes; however, we encourage you to listen to your body and move on when you feel ready. Is CorePower Yoga a cardiovascular workout? The practice of moving with breath systematically flushes the internal organs of the body. In CorePower Yoga, the cardiovascular system becomes stimulated. Blood starts moving faster through the body and you are breathing deeply at the same time. This combination causes the blood to become oxygenated to aerobic levels. Do you have to be flexible to practice yoga? No. “I can’t do yoga because I’m not flexible” is the number one misconception about yoga among non-practitioners. While starting a yoga practice can seem intimidating, yoga really is for everyone. You may not be flexible when you start, but practicing yoga will increase your flexibility. Yoga lengthens and expands our muscles and relieves toxins that build up from the repetitive motions we put our body through during other types of exercises and activities, such as running, lifting weights or playing sports. Yoga is the best counterbalance to these stresses from other areas of your life.
