Dr. Wehrell–Grabowski travels the nation and world
promoting scientific literacy for all by conducting
science and STEM hands-on science programs for
early childhood teachers. Dr. Wehrell-Grabowski
received her Ph.D. in Science Education from Florida
Institute of Technology in 1994. She also holds a
Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction in
Science Education. Diana is a member of NAEYC,
NSTA, Head Start and ASEE.
Dr. Wehrell-Grabowski’s sessions are sponsored by United
Way of Central Alabama Success By 6 from a generous
grant from The Malone Family Foundation.

The opening keynote session will offer participants the opportunity to gain an understanding of how
children learn through their natural curiosity and interacting with their environment. Supporting and
guiding this natural desire to explore science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) ideas can
have long-term lasting benefits. During this interactive presentation, participants will be actively
involved in the keynote message as they interact with their peers in discovering the foundational
principles of STEM educational practices. Participants will observe, manipulate, explore,
communicate and collaborate in this hands-on learning experience.

Worksheets are sometimes used to teach young children skills; however, research tells us that children
learn best by being actively involved. The best learning environments are filled with children who are
talking, singing, reading and playing. Participants in this session will leave with many creative and
developmentally appropriate activities to use with preschoolers.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS); however, too many babies continue to die. Learn the facts

The Importance of Purposeful Play

Children learn when they play in an interactive learning environment. During the training participants
will learn to recognize the different milestones for children 6 months to 4 years of age and how to
augment what is naturally occurring through typical brain development by using various resources and
manipulatives. Participants will engage in a “play session” and learn different ways to approach
teaching through play with each other!

Science Is Simple with the “Growing Up Wild” Curriculum
Target Age Group: All
Children are full of questions: how do flowers bloom; why is the sky blue; how do bees make honey;
or how did the caterpillar change into a butterfly? During this session, teachers will be working with
the educational curriculum “Growing Up Wild”, which builds on children’s sense of wonder about
nature and invites them to explore the world around them through a wide range of activities and
experiences. Participants will develop lessons for parents to use at home with their children to
encourage families to spend more time outdoors and appreciate nature together.

Is your classroom love tank full? This session is based on the best selling book, The 5 Love Languages
of Children by Dr. Gary Chapman. Come and learn more about the 5 love languages: Physical Touch,
Quality Time, Acts of Service, Words of Affirmation and Receiving Gifts. Participants will learn
strategies to help create a nurturing and secure environment where all children are accepted and embraced for their unique personalities and their love language.

Let’s Talk About Behavior!
Target Age Group: All
Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is the scientifically supported discipline that focuses on the individual
and changing behaviors to reach desired outcomes. This presentation will provide an introduction to
assessment techniques that identify possible triggers and causes of behavior. Participants will be
provided an in-depth look into positive and negative reinforcement and punishment, strategies for
increasing positive behaviors and decreasing negative ones and suggestions for when to ask for help
from a behavior expert. Crisis management strategies will also be covered.

Developmentally Appropriate Practice: What Is It, What Does It Mean, and What Does It Look
Like in My Program?
Participants will gain an understanding of Developmentally Appropriate Practice and hear first-hand how
Jean and Sandy implemented DAP into their child care centers. Each participant will leave the session
with multiple ideas on how to enhance all learning areas in the classroom with developmental appropriate
activities.

Getting It In Order… The Power of Sequencing!
Teachers use sequencing though out the day during transitions, storytelling, math activities and various
other activities. Teaching sequencing to early learners is important because logical order of thinking is
fundamental to reading and everyday activities. In this interactive session, participants will discover
how sequencing in the classroom enhances learning throughout all developmental domains and will
investigate how to increase sequencing through hands-on exploration of developmentally appropriate
materials.

session will explore over 100 sensory-focused, hands-on activities for the classroom. Sticky,

for learning through examining, discovery, categorizing and making sense of the world.

Storytelling in a Snap!

Participants will discover the importance of storytelling with preschoolers. This session will focus on
fun and innovative alternative methods of telling stories without books. This session will have lots of
hands-on activities as you learn to tell stories using paper-folding techniques, your artistic abilities,
and your children’s imaginations.

Helpful Information for the Conference
 The conference is held in the Health Sciences Building at Jefferson State Community College,
Shelby-Hoover Campus on the corner of Valleydale Road and Jaguar Drive across from Veteran’s Park.
 Come prepared to take notes.
 Registration will open at 8:15 am. Plan to check-in and visit vendors before the opening keynote
presentation which begins at 9:00 am.
 Classrooms can vary in temperature. Dress in layers.
