From the Interim Minister Rev. Virginia Duffy
Happy New Year! No, you haven’t received a previous issue of the Epistle.
Happy New Program Year! About the time the annual reports of St. Paul Teams,
Council News & Gifts to

Committees and groups were provided, the shiny new UCC desk calendar arrived in the mail.

many people had to pitch in to accomplish the activities and successes of St. Paul Church?

We’ve been having fun with celebrations! We celebrated graduates who are
beginning a new adventure in life. We celebrated our fine Sunday School teachers and
Nurture staff. We celebrated our musicians including the Chancel Choir, the Bell Choir and
others who enhance our music with their gifts.

can we minister to others as well as our own congregation? Outreach and Inreach.
Are we doing things because we always do it? Fresh or Stale? What are our goals?
To exist? To be served? To be of service? Why does St. Paul Church exist? What is your

ST. PAUL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST
COUNCIL MEETING
May 19, 2014
Present:
Rick Davis, Rev. Virginia Duffy, Marge Fassnacht, Don Beresford, Jan Apro,
Mike Bartholomew, Vicky Ritz, Nancy Ballman
Guests:
John Hancock, Kim Ferry, Joan Allen, Sandy Blevins
The meeting was called to order at 7:06 P.M. and Council President, Rick Davis, offered an opening prayer.
The minutes of the April 21, 2014, Council Meeting were reviewed by Council and a MOTION was made
(Apro/Beresford) to approve the minutes. MOTION PASSED and the minutes were approved as printed.

Joan Allen explained to Council that John Hancock wants to go to Lay Ministry School. John presented to
Council a letter he wrote explaining his feelings and why he wants to pursue this opportunity and asking
Council’s support in this endeavor. Nancy Ballman asked what this would entail and the cost. Joan
explained that it would be somewhere around $125 a class and that there are 4 classes a year. It is a
3-year commitment. She said John would get all the specifics to Jan as the money would come from the
Christian Vocation Fund (under Endowment). MOTION was made (Ballman/Ritz) for Council’s approval
and support to John Hancock in this endeavor. MOTION PASSED. At this point, John, Kim and Joan left
the meeting.

Sandy Blevins, head of the Zwoster Scholarship Committee, presented to Council the applicants for the
Zwoster Scholarship for 2014/2015 school year that her Committee determined had met the criteria for the
scholarship. She explained that she wanted Council to verify the applicants’ membership at St. Paul. The
applicants are: Jordyn King, Amber Hancock, Kristin Leist, Kyle Davis, Megan Reed. A MOTION was
made (Fassnacht/Bartholomew) to accept the 5 applicants for the scholarship. MOTION PASSED. After
brief discussion about the rules and criteria for the scholarships, Sandy left the meeting.
Minister’s Report (Rev. Duffy)
 Virginia relayed to Council a problem with the Community Dinner scheduled for the next day. It will have
to be cancelled because of the circumstances.
 Since our last meeting, we had one death in the congregation, that of Richard Czarnicki, for which Virginia
officiated. She made 8 visits to the hospital or rehab facilities. She made/received many phone calls and
e-mails. She joined the Women of St. Paul in their Luncheon Meeting. She had informal meetings to
“touch base” with several Teams.
 She prepared and distributed the list of those responsible for the Annual Meeting Reports to the
congregation. She also wrote Epistle articles about the upcoming Congregational Meeting on Sunday,
June 22, and the election needs according to the Bylaws of the Constitution of St. Paul Church.
 As the Office Administrator had to travel to Florida on family business, Virginia needed to prepare the
orders of worship for weeks ahead. She also has planned for “special” recognitions and programs during
worship.
 Virginia reported that one of her projects is to have copies of the current Constitution and Bylaws printed
and available for those members who request it, as well as to members of Council. The second half of
the “Operations Manual” which includes “job descriptions” of Teams, Committees, and other St. Paul
groups, still needs revisions and will be printed when those parts are completed. We also still have work
to determine St. Paul membership. Council had a brief discussion regarding this.
Care Team (Marge Fassnacht)
Update – One Great Hour of Sharing total is now $726.

Meeting Minutes (continued)
Treasurer’s Report (Don Beresford)
 Total Income is still in the positive against the budgeted.
 Under Expenses – The computer cost more than the designated gift.
 Discussion regarding using Joan’s office for phone used by the Search Committee for conference calls as
it is a “special” line. Chris Hoeweler is checking into the cost of this.
 We are at an actual loss of $20,000 as opposed to the budgeted loss of $28,000 - $8,000 better than
budgeted.
Finance Team (Mike Bartholomew)
 Annual Financial Report will be submitted tonight for Anne.
st
 Mid-year reports will be given to the various teams by June 1 .
 Additional Counter Team members needed are not coming forth. Epistle plea and personal contacts still
used to try and fill vacancies.
 Work continues on getting an accurate membership count. Mike says he hasn’t been able to give this the
attention it needs the past month.
 The Spare Change Jar we set out on the table in the Narthex each Sunday has $248.10 as of tonight.
 Review of accounts and weekly deposit reports are being reviewed to match giving and deposits.
 Gift Cards are going well.
 Discussion regarding “Flower” Accounts. There is a growing negative amount. Don says that negative
number has been growing since he started. All flower money should be paid upfront. Council agrees that
it needs to run like a business. Monitoring will be put in place in the future.
Worship Team (Vicky Ritz)
 Vicky completed her annual report for Worship Team.
 Not much else going on with Worship Team right now.
OLD AND NEW BUSINESS

Bill Ferry has formally resigned from Council. Rick will write the Annual Report for Facilities.

Discussion and planning for the June 22nd Congregational Meeting based on shortage of membership
volunteers.

The Agenda for the June Congregational Meeting was discussed.
A MOTION was made (Beresford/Apro) to adjourn. MOTION PASSED and the meeting adjourned at 9:05
P.M. with The Lord’s Prayer.
Respectfully submitted,
The next Council meeting is Monday,
August 18, 2014 at 7 PM.

SHOE BOX TIME
Summer is upon us and it’s time to go after those shopping specials to fill
empty shoe boxes which are piling up in the downstairs office. According to
one gentleman in our congregation, it’s amazing how many items one can
purchase for a small monetary amount. You might want to seek him out.
Remember, NO war toys, games, toys guns, or glass and liquids. There
will be a list of possible requests on the table in the Narthex should you
want suggestions.

SCOUT NEWS FROM
PACK, TROOP, and CREW 150
Pack 150 held a summer picnic at Winton Woods at the end of June. It was fun to take the kids on a Nature
Scavenger hunt to see how much they notice, while being quiet, on a trail hike. It was great to hear the
silence while in the woods, but you could tell they wanted to talk as loud as they possibly could.
Troop 150 welcomed 8 new boys in to the Troop in early June. They have been working really hard to get up
to speed. Six of those new boys also headed to summer camp with the rest of the troop. It was a great new
experience for them. Still tallying just how many merit badges were earned by the 15 scouts who attended
camp. Back in April the boys attended the Railroading Camporee, pictures follow.
Crew 150 is almost ready to go…. One more paddling/kayaking to
go before we depart for Florida Sea Base. We will be flying into Ft.
Lauderdale and then will be transported to the Brinton Center on
Summerland Key in the Florida Keys. We will then kayak out to Big
Munson Island for 5 days of kayaking, snorkeling, fishing,
exploring and fun.
