WILD THING:
Don’t be scared by the
creature on our front
cover! This artwork was
created by Hannah Lee as a
kindergartner in Ms. McGill’s art
class at Williams School. This assignment
to create an original wild thing based on
Maurice Sendak’s book clearly inspired her,
as her artwork does us.

KIDS COOKING GREEN
Kids Cooking Green staff, Instructors
From the functional to the whimsical, make
just about anything you want from clay. Learn
handbuilding fundamentals, and techniques
for creating pinch pots, slabs, coils, and sculptures; try some wheelthrowing too (it’s not
as easy as it looks!). You’ll select your best
pieces to glaze with the colors and patterns of
your choice. This class includes lots of oneon-one expert guidance; you will work as an
individual and in a group to explore, design,
and refine your work. Tuition includes materials, firing fees, and an additional session to
be held from 6 to 8pm on a Thursday night
following this class for glazing selected pieces.
Parents are welcome to attend the glazing
session—see dates below.
Ever feel frustrated because your drawing of
a horse or baseball player just doesn’t look
the way you think it should? In this class, we
will work on lots of techniques to help you
draw the way you want to. You’ll learn about
perspective, and how to draw faces, bodies,
still-lifes, and landscapes. By the end of the
week you should feel confident drawing a
three-foot giraffe with stripes and a checkered
tail driving down Route 9 in a yellow school
bus—or anything else that you imagine. Bring
an 8x10 sketchbook or drawing paper, regular
and colored pencils, erasers, and markers too
if you’d like. Grades 2–5.
Celebrate summer and learn to cook with
foods native to New England—blueberry
cobbler, local cod cakes, tomato mozzarella
sliders, fresh fruit sorbets, and more. At each
class we’ll highlight a different recipe, focusing on proper cooking techniques and knife
skills as we prepare our own gourmet lunch
to share each day. You’ll go home with recipes and a full belly, and also knowledge of
what’s local, nutritious, and tastes great!

Impress your friends and turn your fashion
designs into stylish clothes in this creative
sewing class. Sketch your fashion design
ideas; choose your fabric; and then learn to
create your own pattern, or trace, pin, cut,
or otherwise alter a store-bought one to
your liking. Learn basic machine and hand
sewing techniques or advance the skills you
already have—you’ll get instructor guidance
every step of the way, from initial concept
to finished clothing designed just by you.
Fabrics and sewing supplies will be provided.
All levels welcome. Grades 4–9.
Amaze yourself and your friends with the
great projects you’ll make in this class.
Choose to sew stuffed animals, doll clothing and life-size dolls, decorative pillows,
mini hand bags, hats, mittens, and more.
First we’ll focus on hand sewing—learning

DESIGN & BUILD WORKSHOP
Wicked Cool for Kids staff, Instructors
Ride your magic carpet to two weeks filled
with games, acting, music, and movement.
We’ll explore the musical fantasy Aladdin,
and everyone will perform different parts of
this “diamond-in-the-rough” tale daily. Using
a variety of fabrics, paints, and other craft materials, we’ll work together to design costumes
and scenery for the unbelievable sights of
Aladdin and Jasmine’s whole new world. The
wonderful music from this show will provide
inspiration for us to stretch our bodies as well
as our creativity. We will produce our own
innovative version of the show to share with
family and friends on our last day. Ages 4–8.
Love to create, design, and build? That’s engineering in action! In this challenge-based
workshop, you’ll repurpose items, using the
engineering and design process to dream
up something new, useful, fabulous, or just
plain fun. Be an inventor and make your
own door alarm, water balloon helmet,
or mechanical grabber to pick things up.
Design a water filter that really works and
create a car that’s built to keep an egg safe in
a crash. Top off the week by constructing a
towering skyscraper and some crazy Rube
Goldberg machines. Grades 1–4.

ROCKET SCIENCE
Wicked Cool for Kids staff, Instructors
SILLY SCIENCE
Kayla Klein, Instructor
A perennial favorite returns! Trailblaze
your way to the stars and learn about space,
rocketry, and terraforming on alien planets.
Build and launch a solid-fuel scale model of
the UP Aerospace SpaceLoft Rocket, a real
rocket used by the world’s only private space
launch company. In the morning, you’ll investigate the science of flight and examine
how things move in the universe by tackling
Newton’s laws of motion. In the afternoon
the flight plan includes launching water
rockets and designing an outer space station.
The rocket launch takes place Friday morning, weather permitting. Grades 1–4.
Check out serious science through a sampling of silly experiments and labs. Each day
we’ll focus on a different science theme, and
enjoy stories, nature hikes, and labs based
on that theme. We’ll make oobleck, plant
flowers, explore the properties of water, concoct elephant toothpaste, create pet rocks,
and more. Ages 4–5.

Can you make a rainbow from white light?
What exactly happens when you put a plant
in darkness? Can you pick things up with
electricity? Come ready to observe, investigate, and find answers to your science
questions. We’ll build box gardens and
magnetic structures, make sunprints, and
more. Through projects, crafts, games, and
experiments, we’ll explore magnetism, invisible matter, living things, and the science of
color. Mix up some super solutions and see
what’s bubbling beneath when you join us at

Animal lovers, grab a lab coat as we learn
about our favorite furry, flying, and fishy
friends. Make amazing animal models, build
big bones, and investigate animal intestines
from our favorite vertebrates: birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. Dissect
an owl pellet to discover its predator’s diet,
and catch some invertebrates as we study insect exoskeletons and get into tiny worlds to
look at animal cells and parasites. A special
live animal visit (with tips for animal care
and keeping pets healthy) ends the week.

ANIMATED SUPERHEROES
Amanda Legere, Instructor
Create an action-packed short story featuring a spectacular superhero, sassy sidekicks,
and of course, a vicious villain. Apply your
technology skills and turn your story into
a slide show full of flashy images and exhilarating narration, captured to an iPad or
desktop computer. We’ll study the art of superhero stories and learn what pertinent plot
details you need to include in yours. From
there you’ll design a story map, craft characters (using images you find and/or create),
and dazzle us with your own thrilling story.

BOOTSTRAP: PRACTICAL
MATH FOR PROGRAMMING
VIDEO GAMES
Bootstrap staff, Instructors
Bootstrap is a computer programming course
with a twist—come learn programming basics
in the Racket language, and use your skills to
program your own video game using algebraic and geometric concepts. In this class,
you will work through the Bootstrap 1 and
2 curricula, learning solid program design
skills such as: stating input and types, writing
test cases, explaining code to others, and becoming familiar with functions and variables.
Throughout the course, you will put your
knowledge into action to create a computer
game of your own design. Once you learn
Bootstrap, these skills can be put to use in
other programming environments, and even
in your math class! No programming experience necessary. Grades 6–8.

MUSIC MASTERPIECES
WITH GARAGEBAND
Caleb Cutler, Instructor
Apply your creativity and technical knowledge and get proficient with the world’s
most popular image manipulation program. In our week together, you’ll learn to
use Photoshop for practical and creative
projects, working on a surrealist collage, an
expressive self-portrait, a reinvented masterpiece or movie poster, and more. See how
Photoshop and image manipulation have
been used to do things like modify body
appearances and alter “real” photographs,
and become an expert in creating and recognizing altered images. All levels welcome.
Grades 5–9.
If you’re a musician (instrumental or vocal)
or just someone who’s interested in music and
technology, this class is for you. Learn the
inner workings of GarageBand to lay down
original tracks or use existing loops, incorporate jam packs or other sound effects, export
your original music, and more. We’ll discuss
what makes a good song, both instrumental
and vocal, and we’ll work on our own songs
individually or in groups. You’ll finish the
week with a CD of the projects everyone in
the group has completed. Bring your instrument if you have one, but don’t worry if
you’re not a musician. New and returning
students welcome. Grades 5–9.

CREATE A TV SHOW
Amanda Mazzola & Sarah Grina, Instructors
Make your own TV production based on
your ideas and imagination. Kids run the
show here: you’ll roll the cameras, run the
control room, be the actors, and most importantly, create the program content and
write the script. You’ll learn the basics of
TV production, including camerawork and
lighting, and get expert instruction with
scriptwriting and acting as well. We’ll work
together to create our masterpiece, and the
finished show will be broadcast on NewTV.
New and returning students welcome.

ARCHERY
Delicious Bow & Arrows staff, Instructors
Fun fact: Newton was host to the nation’s
first organized archery team, The Newton
Archers, circa 1935. Honoring that legacy,
NCE is pleased to offer this still-popular
sport. Archery is a great option for those who
prefer a noncompetitive individual sport
to team sports. Certified instructors from
Delicious Bow & Arrows (formerly Archery
USA) will determine your dominant eye, explain the rules, and get you started, providing
individualized instruction throughout the
class. Archers will learn technique, form, and
accuracy. Equipment is provided. All levels
welcome. Grades 3 and up.

SOCCER TOTS
Thundercat Sports staff, Instructors
Learn fundamental football skills from our
enthusiastic coaches. Each day we’ll focus on
a “skill of the day” such as passing, catching,
running, and offensive/defensive strategies.
We’ll enjoy a scrimmage at the end of each
class so you can apply your new skills. We’ll
use flags only; no tackling. Wear sneakers
and bring a water bottle. Camp will be held
indoors if it rains. Grades 3–5.
Baseball is “America’s favorite pastime.”
You’re never too young to learn to play and
T-Ball’s the way. You’ll learn individual skills
such as batting and catching, and get an
introduction to aspects of regular baseball.
We’ll also play non-traditional games and
activities to encourage skills development
and create a fun, supportive atmosphere.
Wear sneakers, and bring a baseball glove
and a water bottle. Camp will be held indoors if it rains. Ages 3–6.
Why should big kids have all the fun?
Toddlers, accompanied by an adult, can learn
the basics of soccer in this fun, noncompetitive environment. Players will increase their
sense of balance, improve their coordination
and physical movement, and have a leg up
when they join the big leagues! Wear sneakers and bring a soccer ball and water bottle.
Classes will run unless there’s pouring rain;
call Thundercat Sports at 781-507-6182 if you
are uncertain. Ages 2–3 with an adult (one
child per adult please).

Thundercat Sports staff, Instructors
Attention Innovations, Basketball, Flag Football, Soccer & Multi-Sports, and T-Ball Campers:
Medical forms from your pediatrician’s office must be submitted to Newton Community Ed at least two
weeks prior to the start of camp. You can mail or email these, or fax them to us at 617-559-6998. In addition,
a waiver form must be filled out for participation in our sports programs. See our website for details.
More fun than just one sport—enjoy a variety in this weeklong camp. Soccer will be our
core sport, but unique games and activities
will also be part of the mix, creating a fun,
appropriately competitive atmosphere. Our
enthusiastic coaches will teach you proper
skills, rules, and tips for each sport; they’ll
also referee, assure maximum playing time
for each athlete, and kick off our final-day
tournmant each week. Wear sneakers and
bring a water bottle. You’ll be grouped
by age and skill level. Camp will be held
indoors if it rains. Ages 4-9.

The Everything Camp
INNOVATIONS*
Chip Piatti, Director
Come see why so many Innovations campers and staff count down the days from summer’s end to next year’s camp. It’s more than that at this camp you choose your own
activities and share them with other campers of every age, or that here you’ll write the
script for your own commercial, build a to-scale dinosaur, or beat your favorite CIT
in a fencing bout. There’s nowhere else where you can explore unique activities like
architecture, aviation, and “spy kids,” alongside traditional ones such as arts and crafts,
drama, swimming, team sports, cooking, and more. Innovations is something special
you have to see and feel for yourself. Your personalized program is designed after you
register and select your own activities. So join us this summer to make new friends and
let your imagination and creativity come to life. Grades 1–7.
