Whilst it appears that all has gone quite on the licensing front a potential bomb has been dropped into the mix following a statement made by Peter Jamieson, chairman of the British Phonographic Industry. Many thanks to Emma Finley from Stephen Hill Chartered Accountants (www.stephenhill.co.uk), who paid SEDA a visit at the last meeting. Here is some of the article taken from the BBC News website: UK music fans no longer face the threat of prosecution for copying their own CDs on to PCs or MP3 players, as long as the songs are only for personal use. Peter Jamieson, chairman of the British Phonographic Industry, said consumers would only be penalised if they made duplicates of songs for other people. Currently anyone transferring music to portable devices breaks copyright laws. The music industry has traditionally turned a blind eye, however, in favour of targeting "professional" pirates. "We believe that we now need to make a clear and public distinction between copying for your own use and copying for dissemination to third parties," said Mr Jamieson, whose organisation represents the UK's record labels. He told the Commons select committee for culture, media and sport that he wanted to "make it unequivocally clear to the consumer that if they copy their CDs for their own private use in order to move the music from format to format, we will not pursue them". Whilst this doesn’t change the law and doesn’t address DJ’s directly it would suggest that if a DJ were to convert legally owned music from one format to another, that they be treated the same as the general public. Since the above statement, the LWP (DJ Licensing Working Party) have asked both PPL and MCPS for statements, and are still awaiting responses, and imminent meetings with both parties. To help us clarify where Peter Jamieson’s statement leaves DJ’s, the LWP have set up a meeting with Mr Jamieson and other colleagues from BPI and as usual a report will be issued following that meeting. Paul Forsyth, LWP - SEDA Representative Essex DJ BBQ Following last year’s successful event, Essex DJ host their annual BBQ on Sunday 13th August 2006 at their showroom in Colchester. This is an un-missable event, with the latest DJ gear on show along with specials for SEDA members. Essex DJ are based at Unit 11 Peartree Business Centre, Peartree Road, Stanway, Colchester, Essex CO3 0JN Telephone: 01206 762 999 Don’t forget, anyone earning even the slightest bit of income as a DJ needs to register as self employed within 3 months of starting, as penalties for not registering are high. However, with all the initial outlay of expenses they are likely to be making losses, which can be offset against other income received in that year. PAT testing question John Kidd is compiling a list of recommended suppliers for our industry to share with SEDA members. Please let him know who you recommend in your area for PAT testing by sending him an email to: [email protected] 2006 Meetings & events 23rd July 2006 13th August 2006; EssexDJ BBQ 17th September 2006 19th November 2006 SEDA meetings: Grange Moor Hotel, Maidstone, Kent ME16 8BS Issue 234 page 2 South Eastern Discotheque Association A Very Pleasant Evening. July / August 2006 Native Instruments celebrate 10 years at the top 4th June saw a celebration of 40 years of the Banana Powered Disco, run by our president Theo Loyla. The thought of DJing 40 years ago to most is well out of the box, personally I wasn’t even born. It was a case then finding a speaker and record player and winging it into a performance. This celebration brought many of the industry faces and past and present members of SEDA together, as well as being a great family event and I would like to thank Theo for his kind invite. DJing is not an easy career or lifestyle, bookings come and go, as does equipment. Theo shows that it can be done, you don’t need a massive rig, or the very best and latest equipment. Many people forget that the DJ is the most important part of any disco, the ability of a DJ to play the right music for the guests, while mixing to with good speech and a professional looking show always being ready to change and adapt to the latest trend and matching it with the classics of yesteryear. At this celebration, SEDA presented Theo with an engraved Shure SM58 microphone that was kindly donated by HW International to mark the occasion. DJ Nelly B vs Cover Girlz - ‘You’re Beautiful’ (Shortvehicle Productions) Release date: TBA This is Kent DJ/producer DJ Nelly B’s third remix to date. Here’s a guy who has remixed artists like Faithless, and the Gigolo Clown mash-up of the Royal Gigolos. Following the massive success of the original James Blunt song at the top of our UK charts, The Cover Girlz went to studio early in 2006 and produced a version that was aimed firmly at European dancefloors so that we too could partake of the song. When DJ Nelly B heard the inspired original, he took the lines and samples to remix it into an uplifting version that has a hint of his favourite commercial trance riffs combined with the sensational free-and-easy vocals that together provided the wow-factor. The female lead puts a totally new dimension to the song, and the edits have already been getting massive reactions in the South of England.
