We Remember
Blues Man
Steve Thorpe
he Blues is not alright! Steve Thorpe passed
away August 19th, 2010, in the late hour of the
day. With him Brevard County’s major blues man
has left the stage, not just in our town but in several venues around Florida, the US and all the way
up to Canada. He will be greatly missed by a lot
of friends, fans and more than anybody by his wife
Linda and his son Nathan.
I remember meeting Steve at a jam back in the Digger’s
(Palm Bay) days. He took the stage, after waiting patiently
in line, and when he stepped down he was surrounded by
his peers who wanted to know where he’s been all these
years.
Later on that evening he told me that he and his wife
Linda came to Florida for two reasons. For once he worked
as land surveyor for telephone companies rebuilding the
life-lines in hurricane-struck areas. Melbourne, Fl, was reasonably priced and central. Yes, he used to be a fulltime
musician but he quit to raise his son Nathan and support his
family. Next week we all were back at Digger’s - and so was
he. He knew we were waiting. And he wanted to perform.
It didn’t take long before Steve had the Steve Thorpe
Band assembled, a five piece that was kickin’ butt and soon
he was working his way around town.
Linda, being the kind soul and soulmate she is, couldn’t
deny his husband’s passion. After all, he still worked for the
phone companies.
Brevard County who had a pretty amazing blues crowd,
due to music giants like Dave Fiester and Steve Miller,
could now see another amazing talent. The audience was
impressed, and when these blues men jammed together, you
thought you were in the blues capital of the world. At Lou’s
Blues in Indialantic you could see Fiester and Thorpe battle
it out on stage leaving the audiences breathless.
In August 2003 Steve Miller passed away, in August
2005 Dave Fiester followed, both leaving a big gap on our
blues scene that Steve Thorpe took on with a power trio that
included his son Nathan on bass.
In 2004 he had his first bout with health but he seemed
to recover. He spent the following years building a studio,
recording his music and other musicians, playing at festivals, in known blues bars around Florida and blues clubs
around town. He was successful and met other successful
musicians like George Terry and Big Bill Morganfield.

The news of Steve being ill spread like a fire, and it
burnt like that. He was in the hospital for a few days, the last
week he spent at home in the midst of his family.
Too many people tried to see him, so Steve decided
to go and visit his friend. A week before he passed away
he came to Lou’s Blues sitting downstairs, talking to his
friends. The next day he spent with his blue grass crowd,
even played for a while.
This is the story about his last moments. I didn’t hear
it first hand but the source is pretty reliable: Steve spent the
last day with George Terry who he admired. George had
recorded and toured with Eric Clapton, he wrote the song
“Lay Down Sally” and other hits. George wrote a song dedicated to Steve that afternoon. “This song is for you, “ he told
Steve and played it for him. “I really like it,” Steve replied.
Then he slipped into unconsciousness. An hour later we had
lost our beloved blues brother.
There will be a Memorial at Lou’s Blues on Sunday, September 12th, and all proceeds are going to
the Thorpe family. George Terry will be one of the
performers. If you like to make a donation, you can
bring a check to the event.

OPEN FIRE
n the past two years the band Open Fire has shown some of the best virtues that keep a group together: true friendship, dedication to the music, hard
work, lots of practice, incredible endurance, and most of all a shared vision
that kept them going through all challenges. This year their effort paid off. In a
land-slide they won the highest regional music award and the title Entertainer
of the Year 2010.
The road to success was not easy. Open
Fire has been the band of lead-singer Joey
Vutano during the 90s performing rock
from bands like Led Zeppelin, Van Halen,
AC/DC, ZZ Top and more. They developed
a nice fan base back then, but Joey’s health
problems forced the band to take big brakes.
In 2008 he felt strong enough to call his old
friends back - Eric Hotton (guitar), John
Ragozino (bass) and Mike Cote (drums).
This time they gave it their all, and in 2009
they were nominated Entertainer of the Year
for the first time. Fans and band members
were having a great party - until June 13th
when Joey passed away.
End of story? Not for these friends. De-
spite of the fact that it is one of the hardest
tasks to replace a great singer, John, Eric
and Mike decided to keep the band together.
They auditioned several vocalists but nothing felt right.
What did feel right was the loyalty and
friendship of the three musicians and their
fans. John: “People came out even when
they did not know if we had another singer
or not. They loved our music. I know we
have the best fans.”
After 4 different vocalists Eric decided
to call on people from his past. He’s worked
with Erin in the late 90s, and when she tried
out, it was magic. “We felt like a band

again,” said John. Question was what
will the fans say? For the first time Open
Fire had a female vocalist. It was love
at first sight all the way around, and the
new/old friends got their groove back.
John: “Now we had the confidence to
venture outside of Palm Bay and soon
we started playing clubs all over, Sebastian, Titusville, Melbourne.”
Every week they get together and
practice trying to add
three new songs to their
play-list. “We don’t want
to play the same songs every

“No, why should we? We all have day
jobs and play in a band because we
love it. We have a great time on stage,
and I want to thank every single person
who comes out to see us.”
Favorite Original Band: ELEPHANT GUN
Featuring guitarist and vocalist Trevor Prince, David Pastorius on bass and
drummer Tom Van Dyke, Elephant gun provides the last gasp of hope for Brevard’s once thriving original music scene. Combining an eclectic mixture of
southern rock with a bit-o-punk and a smidge of white boy funk, this high energy
trio has developed a reputation as an amazing, must-see live act. After years of
hard work and dedication, the band was recognized in 2010 as Brevard Live’s
“Favorite Original Band.” Congrats, fellas!
Favorite Cover Band: All About Nothing
Hailing from Palm Bay, this five-piece powerhouse burst onto the local
scene in 2007. They quickly proved to be a top area favorite, combining the hottest hits of yesterday and today in pop, rock and country. They recently wrapped
up a successful year-long Thursday night house band engagement at Siggy’s and
headlined Palm Bay’s 4th of July fireworks festivities, performing to thousands
of fans. With their recent BMA “Favorite Cover Band” honor, 2011 looks to their
most promising year yet!

October 1 thru 3: TropStock In Cocoa Village
T
ropStock In The Village is a
three day music festival similar in structure to Palm Beach’s Sun
Fest. The TropStock festival features concerts from top music artists in the Trop-Rock genre along
with a boat display, free kid’s area,
business vendors and much more.
Organizers hope to attract the lo-
cals along with thousands of tourists from outside the area. The Historic Cocoa Village Association has
partnered up with Captain Music
Enterprises to make it happen. “It
is our mission at Captain Music to
bring world-class family-friendly
music events to Brevard County to
make the Space Coast a major mu-
sic destination, let top name artists
perform their original music and
showcase our business and social
community. We have such great entertainment venues that are underutilized,” explained Lee Romano
aka Captain Music. Here are some
of the performers that you can expect to see at the festival:
Peter Mayer
Lead Guitarist with Jimmy Buffett
T
o legions of fans, Peter Mayer may be best known as the
lead guitarist for Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band.
Tall, tan and fit, with a mane of shoulder-length hair, Mayer
looks every bit the charismatic rock star he is.
Mayer was born in Tamil Nadu, southern India, where
his parents served as Lutheran missionaries for 17 years.
The family returned to their Missouri home when Mayer
was still a boy. His earliest musical influences were British
invasion bands such as The Beatles, mixed with his father’s
albums of Bach, Brahms and Rachmaninoff.
After high school, Mayer studied classical guitar, theory and arranging at Webster University, St. Louis, where he
later served on the jazz faculty. After performing in bands
around town, in 1984 he formed the group PM, moved to
Los Angeles and eventually landed a record deal with Warner Brothers.
Jimmy Buffett asked Mayer and his musicians to go on
his Off to See the Lizard tour as his backup band in summer
1989. Although familiar with Buffett’s tropical-tinged hits,
such as Margaritaville, Mayer reluctantly accepted, viewing
the job as a temporary detour. Today, 21 years after that initial tour, Mayer has developed a devoted following of fans.
N
John Frinzi
ew Jersey-born and Florida-based singer/songwriter
John Frinzi has steadily gained recognition across the
country for his soulful songs, unique voice, and strong live
performances. Since the release and airplay success of his
first CD, “Into The Dawn,” in 2003, Frinzi has developed a
national following through constant touring. He plays well
over 200 dates a year.
Frinzi has shared the stage with major performers in
Americana, Folk and Roots music. Highlights were shows
with Todd Snider, Mac McAnally, Ray Wylie Hubbard,
Chuck Pyle, Mark Erelli, Randy Weeks, Slaid Cleaves,
Duane Jarvis, Will Kimbrough, and many more.

“Human sound-effects machine” Michael Winslow first
achieved prominence on the
standup comedy circuit in the early
’80s. Winslow went on to a few TV
guest spots, including an impressive
“straight” role as an emotionally disturbed student on The White Shadow.
His greatest fame lay not in dramatics, however, but in his awesome
ability to create remarkably convincing sound effects, everything from
police sirens, helicopters, machine
gun fire, using nothing more than his
voice. This singular skill was one of
the few saving graces of the many
Police Academy movies of the 1980s,
wherein Michael Winslow was cast as
Sgt. Lavel Jones. the only character to
appear in all the installments of Police
Academy, including all seven movies,
the cartoon, and the TV series.
Since then, apart from smaller
roles in movies and TV, Michael has
been touring as a stand-up comedian,
the “Man of 10,000 Sound Effects.”

TropStock Festival To Boost Local Economy
A
J
John Patti
ohn Patti has combined the unique
island sound of the steel drums with
the western music including many
jazz standards and radio hits of the
past decades to create a truly remarkable sound in the “island jazz” genre.
He released his first solo album in July
of 2006 titled Above The Fold which
blends the warm sounds of the islands
with the cool sound of jazz to find a
great “island jazz” sound. John travels
the country performing with various
national acts in the “Trop Rock” genre.
His sound has taken him up and down
the East Coast, around the Florida Keys
and out to Las Vegas and points out
west.
3-day music festival
at Riverfront Park
in Cocoa Village, that’s
a big event in Brevard.
Organizer Lee Romano
of Captain Music explains his plan: “We
have developed a unique
decentralized profit center business model that
gives everyone in the
business community an
opportunity to generate
business on an ongoing
basis. We went out and
found the sponsors and
instead of Captain Music
vending the beer, wine
and food concessions,
we offer local businesses, pubs and restaurants
the opportunity to vend
the sponsored products.
We have developed
partnerships that have
helped generate national
attention for TropStock.
It encourages people
from around the world
to visit us for a few days.
The hotels, restaurants,
attractions and even
the mini-marts are benefiting from this model.
We’re creating an economic boost for the entire community.”
This is definitely a
community affair with
many sponsors and the
support of the Brevard
County Tourist and Development
Commission who has dedicated
$25,000 for advertising
in a 400 mile radius of
Cocoa Village.
A portion of the proceeds goes to the Rachel
Nates Breath Of Hope
Foundation, non-profit
organization which was
formed to continue the
goals and aspirations of
28-year-old Rachel Nates, who lost her battle
with lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) in
July 2008. LAM is a
rare lung disease that
affects women in their
child-bearing years and
can aggressively destroy
healthy lung tissue. Rachel’s husband Brian
Nates is the VP of marketing for this event.

The Sax Pack
T
he Sax Pack is a class act consisting of three signature sax players;
Jeff Kashiwa, Kim Water and Steve
Cole. Backed by a tight rhythm section, the talented trio combines their
life-long love of music and their passion for performance.
Jeff Kashiwa is the driving force
behind The Sax Pack. After many
years performing with the Ripps, followed by tours with Acoustic Alchemy, Chuck Loeb, Special EFX, and his
own group, Coastal Access, Jeff understood the power of chemistry when
putting together a premier line-up of
his peers.
To fill out the funk in the group,
Jeff called fellow sax man Kim Waters
who has become one of the top artists in contemporary jazz, earning top
sales and achieving ten number one hit
singles from his many releases.
Chart-topping saxophonist STEVE
COLE fits into the mix like a glove.
Steve is a riveting performer with a
talent for creating memorable hooks
and catchy music that make crowds
move and become forever loyal.
S
ister Hazel formed in Gainesville,
Florida in 1994 and was named for
Sister Hazel Williams, a local nun who
ran a homeless shelter.
The group released its self-titled
debut album in 1994 through its independent record label. The band’s second album, Somewhere More Familiar,
was released in 1997 and sold approximately 30,000 copies through its initial
pressing, prompting Universal Records
to sign the band. Universal re-released
...Somewhere More Familiar in late
1997 and the band’s third album Fortress in 2000.
In 2003, after the band split from
Universal, it released its fourth studio
album, Chasing Daylight, and toured
throughout the year to promote it. The
band’s internet presence emerged during this time period.
In 2004, Sister Hazel released another studio album, Lift. Songs from
Lift were re-recorded for 2005’s Lift:
Acoustic Renditions, an EP of studio
acoustic takes on five of the songs,
offered exclusively through Apple’s
iTunes Store.
The band released its seventh studio album of original songs (tenth album overall) on August 18, 2009, titled
Release on the Rock Ridge Music label. On the day of release, Release was
the number one album on iTunes.

Kenny Neal
enny Neal stands tall among
the younger generation of blues
players. His brand of blues, featuring
a combination of Louisiana swamp
blues, funky rhythms and soul-deep
vocals, driven by his guitar playing and
harmonica, puts him at the forefront of
contemporary blues players.
Born October 14, 1957 into a
deeply rooted multi-generational blues
family from Baton Rouge, Louisiana,
Kenny’s been playing the blues since
he was a small child. He first learned
the blues from his father, harpist Raful
Neal, and family friends like Buddy
Guy, Lazy Lester and Slim Harpo. It
was Slim who gave Kenny his first
harp, trying to pacify the crying threeyear-old boy. It worked. Kenny mastered harmonica, and quickly moved
on to bass, trumpet, piano and guitar.
By the time he was 13, he officially
joined his father’s band as a bass player, before being recruited as Buddy
Guy’s bassist at 17. Following Buddy’s advice to concentrate on his guitar
playing, Kenny with his brothers Raful
Jr., Noel, Larry and Ronnie formed the
Neal Brothers Band.
Kenny Neal just released his latest CD,
Let Life Flow.

TENACIOUS D
Rocks the Roo!
By Matthew Bretz
I
t’s early evening in Manchester, Tennessee and the heat
is finally starting to dissipate. It’s
been another long blistering day
of sweaty, exhausting fun in the
small semi-permanent city of
Bonnaroo that has once again become music capital of the world
for the next four days. So far
I’ve seen performances by some
of the industry’s greatest artists:
Stevie Wonder, Weezer, Gaslight
Anthem, Jimmy Cliff and the list
goes on. I’ve also had the privilege to meet a number of these
cats and hob knob with some of
my heros. I love Bonnaroo! As
the crowd grows in front of the
main stage I wait in anticipation
for what I’m hoping will be one
of my favorite shows this year.
The music blaring from the PA
starts to fade and you can feel the
crowd tense in unison. Then from the
left side of the stage steps an Irish giant
in sunglasses and cowboy boots. The
red facial hair throws me for a second,
but the awkward swagger and slightly
squeaky voice are unmistakable and
20 - Brevard Live September 2010
the people go wild as Conan O’Brian
makes his way to center stage. The microphone crackles to comedic life and
after a few minutes of hilarious, albeit
campy, commentary, O’Brian introduces who we’ve been waiting for.
“Ladies and hippies, the greatest
band on the stage right now - Tenacious D!”
Jack Black came on the scene
with a slow but steady rise in the 90’s
playing bit parts of comic relief in
various movies. Near the turn of the
century Black hit gold with a string
of hits and sky rocketed to full blown
“A” list stardom. It was ometime in
the midst of all that he decided to collaborate with fellow comedian/musician Kyle Glass and form an acoustic
comedic metal duo for a series of half
hour shorts on HBO. It took off and
they decided to record and tour. With a
uniquely amazing blend of funny, seriously great musicianship and fantastic
harmonies Tenacious D has become a
favorite across the board for fans of
any genre.
Jack Black and KG appear and
soak in the adoration. Dressed in tshirts and sweat pants they couldn’t
look less like rock stars. But their appearance only lends to the fun as they
roll like thunder into the first song
of their set, One Hit. With a fan base
that knows every word of every song
by heart I’m glad to be so close to the
speakers so I can actually hear the
band. Next up is Rise of the Phoenix,
Kielbasa and Kickapoo, a fictional
narrative about Jack Black’s childhood and how he set out on his own to
“rock.” the story continues with how
he met Kyle and started the band. All
throughout the set there are various
scenes of theater and loosely scripted
comedic sketches taking place.
Suddenly between songs Black
reaches in his pocket to answer his
phone.
“What’s that?” he asks a nameless
second party.
“You want to green light Tenacious D 2? That’s awesome! Dude
we’re so in!”
“Wait, wait, what? You want to replace KG?”
“With who?”
“Really? You think he would do
it? Okay count me in, let’s do it!”
Black hangs up his phone and gets
ready to play the next number.
“Who was that?”, asks a suspicious KG.
“Huh? Oh nobody. Wrong number. Okay next song here we go.”
Brevard Live
Photos by Tim Bretz
“Did you say you were gonna replace me in Tenacious D 2?”
“What? Noooooo! Kyle that’s
something that may possibly happen
way, way in the future. There’s no point
in even worrying about something that
may or may not happen, Kyle. But you
know what is happening? This right
here. We are definitely ready to rock
here and now, so let’s rock.”
“No way man, I quit, I’m out of
here.”
And with that Kyle leaves the stage
and this sets the mood for the next
song, Kyle Quit the Band, in which the
song tells the story of exactly that. So
what do you think the very next song
is? Friendship, where Kyle comes
back to the band for the sake of friendship.
The concert goes on like this with
favorites like Roadie and Metal where
a huge devil horned robot actually
comes out on stage and dances as “The
Metal.”
The boys continue to crank through
their hits one after another with growing theatrical flare. Dio, Saxoboom
Solo, Wonderboy etc.
Then comes Beelzeboss (The Final
Showdown). This is a song about taking on the devil where satan tells the
boys they must play the greatest song
in the world on the spot or he will “eat
your soul.” So, as the song goes, they
spontaneously play the greatest song in
the world. This of course rolls into the
next song, Tribute, which is a tribute
song to the greatest song in the world
because they can’t actually remember
how to play it. The chorus actually
states “This is not the greatest song in
the world, this is just a tribute.” An actor dressed as satan dances around and
chimes in where applicable and it’s
pretty great.
Tenacious D finishes up the show
with a cover medley of Pinball Wizard,
There’s a Doctor and Listening to You.
Once again showing they are not only
funny as hell, but super star players and
singers. In the grand tradition of comedic duos like the Smothers Brothers,
God’s Pottery and current stars Flight
of the Concords, Tenacious D is a step
above both musically and comedically.
If you haven’t heard these guys, check
it out. Buy a CD, go see a show, laugh
your ass off.

The Column
By Chuck Van Riper
T
It’s That Time Again
he past few months have just reinforced my theory
that we must get rid of all the right wing nut cases in
the House and Senate, all those who are bought and paid
for by their corporate buddies and lobbyists. Firstly, there
was the unemployment debacle. The Republicans were
screaming that we can’t add another $1.7 billion to the
deficit to extend these benefits, especially to help out those
millions of people who are out of work. After all, if they
really wanted to work, they could find it. And what about
all those who take advantage of the system and rip off the
government? In actuality, millions of people were forced
out of work and the people who actually abuse the system
comprise less than 2% of those in the system. Aren’t you
guys in the Congress supposed to be representing WE THE
PEOPLE? Did you really think it would be helpful to your
constituencies to make them go without their benefits for
a few months while you’re out golfing? Was that really
in their best interest? It boggles my mind to think that
you would think it would be good for America and the
economy if we just stopped helping those who lost their
jobs. Well, screw you guys, it passed anyway.
Then there was the terrible idea of trying to allocate
monies to keep millions of teachers, policemen and
firemen working. This stimulus plan, which is paid for
and would not increase the deficit, that would positively
affect all these people was seen by the nutcases as another
ploy by the government to regulate the teacher’s unions,
etc. How can you sit there and bitch about the economy,
falsely proclaiming that it is all Obama’s fault, and then
vote no when it comes time to actually do something to
help the people who put you in office? You sit there and
gripe about the unemployment rate, yet when there is a
plan to help millions of people, you just play politics. How
is this helping the American people? What goes through
your tiny, greedy brains? Once again, it boggles my mind
to think that you would think it would be good for America
and the economy if we just let hundreds of millions of
teachers, policemen and firemen lose their jobs. Once
again, screw you guys, it passed anyway.
The next big battle is going to be whether or not we
should let the “Bush Tax Cuts” expire next year. The
nutcases say: “Raising taxes in this bad economy is a bad
thing and would cause inflation.” Normally I would agree
22 - Brevard Live September 2010
with that. However, they are not really “raising” taxes,
merely restoring the pre-Bush tax rates. This would mean
that those who make over $250,000 a year would see their
taxes go from the current 36% back to the 39% it used
to be. Keep in mind that this would affect the top 2%
of tax payers, who can actually afford it. The revenues
that this would create are estimated to be between $650 –
800 BILLION dollars! Now this “tax break for the rich”
was never paid for in any way, so how can you say that
subsidizing unemployment benefits that aren’t paid for is
bad, yet tax cuts for the rich, costing billions is good?
The Republicans are keeping up their policy of just
saying no to EVERYTHING. They do not want to make
it look like Obama has accomplished anything. Whether
or not you agree with the presidents policies, you have to
admit he’s trying, but this “just vote no on everything”
policy is hurting the economy, the people, and the country.
This is not the kind of Democracy our founding fathers had
in mind. We really need a congress that will truly represent
their constituency regardless of their party affiliation. As
the rhetoric builds up to the mid-term elections next month,
keep in mind that whether you are Republican or Democrat,
we need to get rid of those in power that are abusing the
system and restore our representative government. This
is where the voices of WE THE PEOPLE are heard the
loudest, at the voting booth. Let’s vote in people who
will truly uphold the Constitution and represent the people
they work for instead of the corporations. It’s time to end
the “just vote no on everything” policies in the Congress.
Maybe it’s time to give Independents a chance. Could they
do any worse? Do a little research and see who stands for
what. There is no greater threat to the establishment than
an informed and educated electorate.

Earl’s Hideaway
Sebastian
Every once in a while, an
artist emerges from the
Deep South and bursts
fully mature upon the
blues scene. Eric Culberson is one of those few.
His style is unmistakably
authentic, energetic, and
blessed with sex appeal
and charisma. He is a
breath of fresh air for the
blues.
Eric hails from Savannah, Georgia, where he
started out working the
usual club circuit. Soon
Eric and his band became
a local phenomenon. It
was just a matter of time
before he was introduced
to Bob Greenlee at Kingsnake Records. One trip
to the Kingsnake studios in Sanford, Florida,
and Eric was signed and
recording his first Kingsnake release, “Blues is
my Religion” which went
to #24 nationally on the
blues air play charts.

Mule Rocks the River
I
t was a dark and stormy night. I always
wanted to start a story with that sentence,
but the truth is…it actually was a dark and
stormy night. I sat at one of the two wooden
picnic tables outside the Dog n’ Bone sipping on a Guinness, enjoying the afterglow
of a beautiful Sunday evening filled with all
my favorite things: beer, live music and girls
who like to drink beer and listen to live music.
August 1st 2010 Gov’t Mule took the stage in the relatively new amphitheater at River Front park in Cocoa Vil32 - Brevard Live September 2010
lage. The amphitheater has been there for a little while now,
but that night felt like a new christening for our little corner
of the music world.
Born as a side project out of the Allman Brothers band,
and headed up by number 23 on Rolling Stone’s top 100
guitarists list Warren Haynes, Gov’t Mule has risen to a
level of jam band royalty and I for one was psyched to have
them in town.
I met Warren a little over a year ago backstage at a
Grateful Dead concert (he currently fills Jerry Garcia’s spot
with the Dead) and one thing I remember was the dynamic
difference between how laid back he was in person and
how intense his playing was onstage. Nothing has changed.
Almost never without his beloved Gibson Les Paul, Haynes
easily and effortlessly glides around the fret board with
style and soul.
I heard one local performer remark that most of the
show was a guitar wank fest. Yeah…maybe it was, but
being a guitarist I loved it. And I was happy to see some
of my favorite local guitarists on hand to soak it up in
much the same way, namely Ryan Bowers, Matt Sams
and the irreverent Papa Chuck.
The beer flowed, the rain fell, the hippies danced and
the music held it all together. The entire evening had a
festival feel. Plus because of the rain I got to try out my
new waterproof digital camera…check out the pics.
After fantastic sets by both openers, local rockers
the Bone Dogs and national artist Jackie Greene, Mule
ripped into a mix of hits, new material and special covers
for nearly three hours. Songs like Steppin’ Lightly, Frozen Fear and Railroad Boy kept the crowd popping while
special tributes to Jerry Garcia on his birthday, especially
an extended version of Dark Star with Jackie Greene and
an encore of Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here, proved
the night to be a memorable experience.
It’s not often that we get bands of this caliber and
status in our area and I have to commend promoter Sue
Luley and her associates for making it happen. It’s the
kind of thing we desperately need these days and I’m
grateful for the evening. In addition to the fun, it was all
for a great cause. A portion of the day’s profits will go
to help buy instruments for a local school and you can’t
help but feel good about that.
The concert went off like clock work. The bands
were great, the food was great…beer is always great…
and there was even an after party at the Dog n’ Bone
where New Gravity set up a laser light show to rival vegas.
Great fun. Let’s do it again!

6th Anniversary Party
For Slow & Low Bar-B-Que
F
or a restaurant or bar to be successful these days it
takes long hours, hard work and dedication to bring
the public an affordable establishment that pleases every member of the family. The owners of Slow & Low
Barbeque have put the time and effort in and it shows.
Six years ago Joel and Nicole Smith struggled to open
the restaurant while threatened by hurricanes but instead, persevered to become the only barbeque restaurant in Cocoa Beach with a full-liqour outdoor bar and
live entertainment Thursday through Saturday. Oh, and
did I mention outstanding grub?
The hot spot in Cocoa Beach is easily found on North Orlando Avenue. It’s well known by the locals as a great place to
grab a bite with the family, chug a cold one during the game or
just hang out and listen to some fine live music with friends.
The essence of the restaurant lies in their juicy, mouth-watering hickory-smoked meats with just the right touch of smoke
flavor and Alabama influence. I know it’s hard to stray from the
popular BBQ sandwiches but they also serve some amazing
appetizers, salads, steaks and seafood. They have over 16 sides
to make choices complicated and they offer some specialties
that you can’t find on basic menus like meaty brunswick stew,
fried green tomatoes, juicy prime rib, turkey legs and a creamy
smoked fish dip. They are one of the few restaurants worthy of
a “Man Vs. Food” phone call because upon request they prepare a enormous 6 pound Crazy Pork Sandwich complete with
pulled pork, onions, cheese, slaw and white barbecue sauce on
a colossal homemade bun. It’s the perfect sandwich to share
with friends or take on a pic-nic. Dare to devour it alone and
you will receive it FREE along with your name and photo on
their prestigious wall of fame.
Slow & Low is spacious and spread out with plenty of dining
area alternatives, indoors and outdoors. Air conditioned or covered and breezed with ceiling fans, you’ll get the same fine and
dandy service either way. On Wednesdays, the family owned
venue caters to youngsters with face painting, an energetic magician and kid-friendly dinner specials. Families can also expect a visit from Slow & Low’s very own pink piggy mascot
during the evening. Just don’t call him chicken!
For the lounge lizards, the Smiths have created a special back
area of the restaurant called The North End based on the proximity in the building. Reminiscent of a beautiful European pub,
the space is enhanced with dark wood and leather and features
comfy seating, large screen tv’s and of course, plenty of liquor
for celebrating any occasion. Like any good tavern, they
also have live music with the local talents of Josh Miller
on Thursday nights and Zac Sullivan on Saturday nights.
Best of all, the pub and restaurant section boast the best
happy hour on the beach with two for one drink specials
from 2 pm to 6 pm Monday through Friday.
Having many reasons to celebrate, owners and staff
are throwing a huge 6th anniversary party on Saturday
and Sunday, September 18th & 19th. The festivities will
include entertainment all day and night, prizes, give
aways and plenty of BBQ specials! Call anytime for take
out, catering for up to 5,000 people or information. 321783-6199.

“Straight
With Chaser”
Richard Gangi
By Joan Bixby
W
FIT disc jockey Rich Gangi is a man on a
mission. The native New Yorker whose wellknown radio show, “Straight With Chaser,” airs from
7-10 p.m. Wednesday evenings on 89.5 FM has purposely structured his show to entertain jazz enthusiasts as well as grow the number of people who listen
to and enjoy jazz, particularly young people.
An enthusiastic fan of both jazz standards and today’s
more progressive fusion of rock and jazz, 52-year-old Rich
is a veritable walking catalogue of jazz despite the fact that
he was a child of the R&R era and the first 45 record he
ever bought was the Beatles classic, “I Want to Hold Your
Hand.” His interest in jazz probably originated in his Brooklyn home listening to his father’s music collection. Since
then he absorbed knowledge in many ways including listening to long-time DJ Jack Simpson - to whom he says he
owes a great debt. His desire to share his love of jazz can
most likely be attributed to his Italian-American heritage
from which he inherited a passionate approach to life and
all the joy it holds.
“My show is like three little shows in my own mind. I
start out by playing older standards. Then, I transition to today’s musicians (including our local artists). By the end of
the show I move into the more progressive stuff [jazz fushion groups] like John McLaughin’s Mahavishnu Orchestra,
Larry Coryell’s Eleventh House, and Chick Corea’s Return
to Forever which features Al Di Meola.”
Rich transferred to Melbourne in 1987 with Northrop
Grumman to work on the JointSTARS program. “I had to
move 1200 miles to be with the people I grew up with,” he
says. Close friend Lenny moved to the area in the late ‘70s.
Lenny’s cousins Michael and Jerry work in adjacent offices
at Grumman. Then there is Howie Katz. Howie, who owns
Guitar Haven, can tell you the story of the day he and Rich
met in Long Island.
It seems that Rich was tooling down the street on his
new bike when he heard some fine guitar vibes emanating
from a bedroom window on the second floor of a house.
Rich, who has been playing guitar since he was 11, liked
what he heard. He bounded up the stairs, introduced himself
to Howie’s mom, and asked if he could meet the player of
the guitar. Their life-long friendship became the key that unlocked a multitude of additional friendships for the new guy
when he arrived in Melbourne, beginning with his introduction to Billy Van Riper.
At first Billy was his teacher, but their relationship
deepened into a close friendship. “Billy plugged me into
the jazz scene,” Rich said. “Through him I became friends
with Stevie Lee who, until recently, hosted the show “Body
& Soul” on Monday nights at WFIT.” When the Wednesday
night slot opened up at WFIT, Stevie talked Rich into taking
over. “I had never been a DJ before,” said Rich, “and I only
had one night of practice, Monday, before going solo in the
studio. A friend of mine taped me Wednesday and I got the
name of my own show wrong three times. That seems like
a long time ago.”

Modern Woman
What’s In Your Life?
By Misti Blu Day
A
s I approach twenty six - and every birthday really - I
look at my life as a whole. I think about what I’ve
been through and what is ahead. I have 2 1/2 decades under my belt and hopefully many more to come!
When I was eighteen I thought I knew everything.
There wasn’t a lost or confused thought in my mind. When
I turned 23, I was at the end of my collapsing empire. All
of my life seemed to be shattered around me and there was
no way around it. I was trapped. Everything I thought I
knew was wrong. I didn’t even know myself. From that
point on, I had to pick up the pieces and rebuild. The beauty of this is that I could build whatever I wanted.
In life their are so many different paths to take. There
are also many opportunities to get off track. When I was
a little girl I had enormous dreams. I wanted to be an astronaut, a surgeon, a rock star, and a movie star. I used to
check out books at the library and take notes in journals.
My journals where highlighted and neat and detailed. I
was going to land on the moon and I was going to star in
movies. My childhood was great but also sometimes very
dark and scary. I had pancakes on the weekends and went
to Disneyland and Knots Berry Farm in the summer. I had
Barbies and amazing birthdays and wonderful Christmas
mornings. But I also had a broken family that was glued
together. There was always that fear of the unknown. What
would the night turn in to? My eyes have always been
clouded by hopes and dreams to buy my escape. It was my
little secret, my way out in that glass piggy bank on my
dresser. Sometimes my piggy bank would get so full and
I’d feel so proud and hopeful and then my father would
empty it out, every penny, then promising to pay it back
one day. He’d return later that night, stumbling , drunk and
belligerent, looking for my mother. I’d lock myself in my
room, in my closet or under my bed and try to make sense
of what was going on outside of my room. I knew. He
had used my money, which were my hopes and dreams, to
poison his mind with whiskey and place his hurt into my
mother’s face. He emptied my dreams into his wallet for
several years after that. Every year we would move and
start over. I would be the new kid at school, shy, but try-
ing to make friends. When I finally did it was time to leave
them and start over again in some other town.
When I was in third grade I remember running laps
around the softball field at practice. I felt dizzy and out of
breath. I told my coach that my heart was pumping fast and
she told me to keep running, “Your heart is supposed to beat
fast when you run.” Well, not 300 beats per minute. Most
of my childhood I would get funny feelings in my chest but
it was usually when I was running around like most kids
do. I thought it was normal and no one was suspicious. Finally one day when my face was very red, and white around
my lips, and I couldn’t breath. The nurse at school listened
to my heart and I was sent to the ER. For several years I
would be rushed to the ER to catch the funny rhythm but
it would make a liar out of us and beat perfect and normal
by the time we got there. When I was 14 we finally caught
it and I was diagnosed with Supra-ventricular Tachycardia.
When I was 19 I had two cardiac ablations to correct it,
leaving me with a new problem. I’d go into the ER every
month complaining I didn’t feel well. They always sent me
home, telling me I am fine. Finally one day when the doctor
handed me the usual discharge papers, he mentioned my
murmur, which I never had, assuming it was always there,
then walked away. I stopped him and told him I never had
a murmur. He ran more tests and 3 days later diagnosed
me with moderate to severe aortic insufficiency. My aortic
valve was regurgitating blood back into my heart and could
eventually lead me to heart failure.
I’ve had twin boys and a beautiful little girl that are
the love of my life. Only, their father wasn’t. I’ve always
said, you can’t love anyone if you don’t love yourself, especially if you don’t even know yourself. I was young and
love didn’t make any sense. I didn’t even think it was real
or possible.
My point in all of this isn’t to make you feel sorry for
me. This isn’t even the worst of it. This is all sugar coated.
I could probably write a novel about all of my mishaps and
unfortunate events, then again, couldn’t we all? My point
is, life is unpredictable. It’s unfair, brilliant, scary, beautiful, dark, funny, and chaotic. It is also what you make of
it. I’ve had many chances to give up and let my the world
get the best of me. You have to keep building. Life is like
a house. You need repairs. You can add on. You can tear
down walls. I still have big dreams and I am still going for
them. I found love, which I never thought possible. I strive
to give my kids a great life. I put myself back in school so
that I can have the career I want. Whether you are 16, 26, or
56, you can always start over or take new paths. It is never
too late to get the life of your dreams. Don’t let yourself be
trapped by your mistakes or broken past. Just pick up the
pieces and place them wherever you want.

do anything”-Chuck Palahniuk

Florida Art
William H. Schroth
By Joan Bixby
T
he USS Constellation
was the last all-sail warship launched by the U.S.
Navy, even before the U.S.
Civil War began, and served
a distinguished career from
1894 until she was finally decommissioned in 1946.
The Constellation rested in the Boston Navy Yard
from 1946 until 1955 providing at least one impressionable youngster memories that would last a
lifetime. William H. Schroth’s parents would periodically take him to see the majestic warship from
the time he was seven until he became a teenager.
He was “mesmerized by the beauty of the ship.” In
1955 the ship was designated a National Historical
Landmark and transferred to a permanent berth at
Inner Harbor, Pier 1, Baltimore, MD.
42 - Brevard Live September 2010
Schroth grew up to be a man of many talents: an upholsterer,
a machinist, a carpenter, and a tool and die maker. He had
little problem during his lifetime finding work. The confidence he had in being able to support his family enabled
him to pack up his wife, 3 sons and 2 daughters, and move to
Florida in 1978 to get away from the cold Boston winters.
The last job he had before he retired was as custodian and
maintenance man at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.
He credits his friends there and his next-door neighbor with
sending his life into a different direction. They helped him
stop his two-to-three-packs-a-day smoking habit. His nextdoor neighbor even gave him a small plastic kit of a little
boat urging him to find a hobby that would keep his hands
busy..
. That was 16 years ago and he has been building sailing
ships ever since. . He doesn’t build little, store-bought kits.
He builds BIG ships from plans or from his imagination;
one model so big that he had to dismantle it to get it out the
door of the modest trailer home he lives in. He’s 71 now and
some of his ships have taken a year to build. Every time he
starts one, he wonders if he is going to live long enough
to finish it. “But, before you know it, it’s done,” he says.
“I don’t try to think too far ahead. I stay in the now. Time
doesn’t matter,” said Schroth. “I think that inside every
human being, they have a gift.” He even enjoys the smell
of working with wood and is a bit amazed at how easily he
proceeds with the work he does, not only with the ships,
but also with carpentry jobs in his home or in the trailer
park where he does some remodeling
Apparently he passed down some of his artistic genes.
Schroth’s son Michael makes his living as a chain saw
artist and has a shop in Marco Island, Florida where he
exhibits his carvings, some of his father’s models, and
paintings he accepts on consignment. For the past eight
years Schroth has also exhibited and sold his ships at the
November ArtWorks show on Highland Avenue in the Eau
Gallie Art District. He usually is set up near the church
and many regulars seek him out. “Transporting is a pain,”
he says, but it’s worth the effort to afford him an opportunity to meet and talk to people about his art.
A blue-sailed clipper ship, the Thermopylae, stands in
Schroth’s living area. Probably one of the most famous
clipper ships in the 1800s, this ship and the Cutty Sark
competed for the fastest time in the China tea trade. Clipper ships were the fastest commercial sailing vessels ever
built; their main masts almost as tall as the ship’s length.
They had four or more masts and were famed not only for
their speed but also their maneuverability. Schroth explained that the deep blue sails helped make the ship less
visible. Some of the largest ships he has built are the Santa
Maria, the largest of the three ships used by Christopher
Columbus to cross the Atlantic in 1492; the first paddle
ship with sails, and the Flying Fish, an 1851 clipper with
the figurehead of a green and gold flying fish at her bow.
Schroth often orders plans from a huge catalogue entitled
“Taubman Plans Service” that contains hundreds of drawings, scales, flags of nations, etc. When he receives the
plans, they are sometimes in a language other than English. Not a problem, says Schroth, “I just guess what the
ropes are for.” He is currently tackling the HMS Bounty as
his next project, the famous 3-masted cargo British Royal
Navy Ship known for the mutiny, Captain Bligh and Mr.
Christian. “I start off with poplar that has great bending
strength,” he explained as he twisted a narrow piece of
wood. “No knots, beautiful grain,” he continued. The
sails? Bedsheets painted on both sides with latex paint
until the desired color is achieved.
Most, not all, ships are water-worthy. “I put them in
the lake near the Melbourne Auditorium,” he said. “And
everything doesn’t always work on the ship, but some
like the paddle ship do. I enjoy putting them in the water.
People always ask me the same question, ‘How did you do
that?’”

LIFE
State of the Union
By Matthew Bretz
I
want to get serious for a minute, Brevard. I want
to talk to you about a disease that has infested our
country slowly but surely, creeping first through
our youth and then riding along with each generation until it’s now at epidemic levels. This disease
not only threatens to, but has already caused major
damage to the ideals that we as Americans once
held dear. It eats at the innate humanity we once
protected like a precious unspoiled flower. I’m
talking about apathy.
Be the first on your block to have it, get the latest
model, experience state of the art- bigger, faster, better…
We have become so hypnotized by our commercial existence most of us don’t really know or even care to know
about what’s going on around us.
Everyday our world endures tragedy - politically,
economically, socially and physically, but it increasingly
feels like the masses aren’t even paying attention. I remember being amazed at how many people I came across
that had no idea about the oil spill in the gulf even as far
as a month into the accident. Today there was massive
flooding in three European countries causing millions of
dollars in property damage and killing at least 9 people. It
was lightly covered in the news. Also at print time there
was an incredible flood in Pakistan wiping out entire villages, leaving over 2 million people homeless. I heard
about it on NPR, but mainstream news didn’t even touch
it. What was in the news? What Lindsey Lohan had for
breakfast in jail.
Haiti, Darfur, Chile, Indonesia, China…there are major human tragedies happening everywhere, but even if it
flashes on TV for a moment it’s immediately overshadowed by mind numbing pop culture. If it doesn’t affect
our lives directly we seem content to ignore it and that has
to stop.
In 1957 president Eisenhower commissioned a group
of scientists, researchers and various experts in multiple
fields to analyze any and all data they could find in an
attempt to predict how long the earth could supports its
population. Unfortunately the outlook wasn’t very sunny
and the predicted time has come and gone. Over fishing
has reached colossal proportions, wheat demand is nearly
triple what we can produce and clean water is becoming
a luxury in many places. People are starving all over the
planet.

THE
BEACH
Right now we can go to the super market and choose
from a hundred different kinds of cereal, 30 different cuts
of fresh meat and just about any fruit you can think of. We
can drive through various kinds of fast food restaurants
and gorge ourselves with 24 hour convenience. Here in the
land of milk and honey we won’t feel the sting of hunger
for a very, very long time if ever. But that doesn’t mean it’s
not happening.
Lately it seems, to bring light to disaster and really get
people to pay attention, we have to be tricked into it with a
gimmick. It has to become en vogue to care about an issue.
It has to be trendy. Go green, save the whales, recycle…
People are still homeless in New Orleans, People are
still dying in Ethiopia and nothing at all has yet been done
in Haiti 7 months after the earthquakes.
It’s a sad and cynical way to look at society, but it gets
harder every day to have any other perspective. We are
constantly given bi-opolys to make it seem as though we
have a choice. McDonald’s and Burger King, Coke and
Pepsi, Republican and Democrat- but it’s all the same and
our perceived choice is really all a smoke screen to keep
us insulated in a comfortable bubble. Keep us pacified and
we won’t ask questions. But that time is over, because if
we don’t start asking questions soon, if we don’t start paying attention to what’s happening around us and with our
neighbors world wide, if we don’t once again become active citizens of this planet we are condemning ourselves
to a path of blind obedience and we are leaving our fellow
humans to fall behind.
America was founded with a revolutionary spirit.
Americans were never meant to be complacent and apathetic. It’s time to wake up and claim our heritage. Its time
to take responsibility for each other…not just number one,
or we won’t be number one very much longer.
