From the Board Chair
John Hodge
As the new Board Chair, I am excited to
continue the enthusiasm and momentum
that our former Board Chair Darwin
Simpson began during his tenure with the
Spartanburg Humane Society.
As an animal lover and the owner of 4 dogs,
the critical work of the Spartanburg Humane
Society is very important to me. I am excited
to work with the incredible, motivated staff
and volunteers at the SHS to find even more
homes for abandoned animals and sharing
our important messages about issues
affecting pets within our community.
The compassion of everyone involved with
the SHS never ceases to amaze me. Under
the leadership of our new Executive Director
Shail Radloff, I have seen this commitment
grow and expand exponentially.
This
commitment is evident on each and every
page of the Scoop.
• The SHS has committed themselves to
lowering the number of animals who are
euthanized at the shelter. Now, only animals
who are not healthy or are behaviorally
unsound are euthanized.
• By hiring a second adoption outreach
coordinator, we are ramping up our efforts
to find more pets homes through rescue
organizations or adoption partners.
• We are in the middle of expanding
our clinic in order to better fight the pet
overpopulation problem. Read more about
the expansion on page 5.
• The community has partnered with us
to help spread the word about the SHS. By
hosting two new events (read more about
these events on pages 4 and 7) and with
more community outreach events than
ever before, we are reaching even more
people with our messages of responsible
pet ownership.
We have a lot to look forward to in the
coming months. I am excited to share with
you the many accomplishments and happy
“tails” that are made possible through the
strength and compassion of this incredible
team.
Sincerely,
• We have strengthened our determination
to find pets more homes by offering the
community a variety of sales and special
adoption prices to entice pet owners to
adopt from the SHS. Read more about our
efforts on pages 3 and 7.

Sales save lives
With the help of several sales and reduced priced adoptions, we have found homes for more than 300 pets since April. Some of these
lucky pets are: (top row, left to right) Rocky, Miss Ann, Victor, (bottom row, left to right) Brystol, Wilma, and Rose.
300+ pets find new
homes during sales
The SHS has made a commitment to
helping more animals find homes. We are
leaving no stone unturned and no bridge
uncrossed in our pursuit to match more
pets with homes.
Since April, the SHS has held several sales
to entice the community to welcome pets
from the SHS into their hearts and their
lives. All five of our sales have been wildly
successful at increasing our adoption
rates. Despite these phenomenal adoption
prices, all pets are spayed or neutered,
vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed,
and more so that everyone is set up to get
started on the right foot.
Certified Pre-Owned Cat Sale
4/11 - 4/13
In April, we highlighted the health and
services of our adoptable cats from the
SHS. Our Certified Pre-Owned Cat Sale
allowed us to find homes for 21 cats in just
three days!
$5 Feline Sale
5/29 - 6/1
The warm summer months brought many
kittens and cats to the SHS who needed
great homes. The $5 Feline Sale was just
what we needed! In four short days we
found homes for all but one of our cats on
the adoption floor - a total of 75!
$17.76 Great American Pet Sale
7/9 - 7/20
The spirit of Independence day moved us
to hold our first Great American Pet Sale!
For the low price of $17.76, adopters
could adopt a cat, kitten, rabbit, or adult
(6 months and older) dog into their home!
The sale was such a success during the first
week, we decided to extend it a second
week. During the two week sale, 159 pets
found homes!
counterparts on the adoption floor seem
to find homes faster. In order to reduce
the amount of time they spend on the
adoption floor, we had a “Dwindle the
Brindles” sale where we made stripes
twice as nice! Three brindle dogs found
their homes in just four days.
$5 Feline Sale - II
8/1 - 8/3
By the time August rolled around, the SHS
was overwhelmed with cats and kittens
once again! Rather than euthanizing these
animals because we did not have the space
for them, we again asked the community
to partner with us to find great homes for
cats for just $5. The community rose to the
occasion and adopted 53 cats and kittens in
just three days!
$14.99 Dwindle the Brindles Sale
7/31 - 8/3
We have also found great homes for pets
by reducing the adoption fees of pets who
have been with us for extended periods of
time.
Brindle (or striped) dogs often have a
harder time finding homes at the SHS.
For some reason, their solid and spotted

Steve Melton and his cockatiel Sabrina, were 2 of the 100+ people who attended the first
annual Happy Trails Poker run! Motorcyclists enjoyed a 110 mile ride with 7 stops before
coming back to the SHS for lunch and music from the Trophy Husbands’ Band.
SC-150 Carolina Foothills VRA,
plans and hosts poker run
We were delighted to be approached by a
group of enthusiastic motorcyclists known
as the SC-150 Carolina Foothills VRA back
in April. The newly formed group wanted
to host a poker run to benefit a local
nonprofit and unanimously decided on
the SHS!
For over four months, the group met and
planned each detail of the event from the
course map and the band to the color of
the t-shirts and everything in between!
The event was a success with over 100
people in attendance. Both motorcycles
and cars poured out of the parking lot at 9
am and drove from stop to stop collecting
their hand of poker.
Participants finished the poker run at
the SHS where they were treated to a
luncheon and live music from the Trophy
Husband’s Band.
By the time the event was over, the SC150 Carolina Foothills VRA had raised
over $3,000 to help homeless animals
in our community! The event was such
a success, they are already planning for
next year. We were so delighted by their
generosity, we wanted to Pass It On!
Lucas wins Great Upstate Pet Contest!
This year, 64 pets competed in the
Great Upstate Pet Contest fundraiser.
The contest was free to enter and every
vote was $1 donated to help homeless
pets! Participants encouraged their
friends, their family members, and
everyone they knew to vote for their
pet.
It was a close race! But with 1,090
votes, Lucas, the beloved pet of Kerstin
and Bill Joslin, won our Great Upstate
Pet Contest fundraiser!
Veterinary Clinic Expands
Honor and Memorial
Donations
continued from page 4
The clinic expansion will allow us to do more for pet overpopulation
in our community! (From left to right) Dr. Melissa Elledge, Amber
DeShields, Dr. Michelle Welton, and Kat Barsch during a typical day
of spay and neuter surgeries.
Renovations allow
for more spay and
neuter surgeries
also hired a new veterinarian and
another veterinary technician.
These new staff members are
already playing a key role in our
success.
The
Spartanburg
Humane
Society is gearing up to save
more lives. Thanks to the
generosity of two donors, we
were able to expand our clinic
making room for more spay and
neuter surgeries.
This new commitment will allow
our clinic team to increase the
amount of spay and neuter
surgeries by as many as 30
pets per day! These additional
surgeries will assist in lowering
the number of animals who
come to us in need by lowering
the population.
Until recently, our veterinary
team
was
sharing
one
preparation area in our clinic.
Because this table was used
for everything from prepping
animals for spay and neuter
surgery to dental work, our
capacity was limited.
By renovating a virtually unused
isolation area, we were able to
reclaim space that will allow
us to expand our capabilities.
Although the project is not yet
complete, we have already
added a second preparation
area in the new space, which has
made a dramatic difference.
The SHS’s commitment to
saving lives goes beyond new
equipment and space. We have
Want to help?
While, the clinic renovation was
made possible with the help of
donations, the SHS is still seeking
additional funding to cover the
costs of completing the project.
We still need more kennel
space in the clinic to allow the
pets who have been spayed or
neutered a place to recuperate.
Two additional preparation
tables, surgical lighting, surgical
equipment, pet monitoring
devices, and an anesthesia
machine are all still needed to
complete the project.
