CLUTCH IT ‘Madison’ wool tuxedo jacket It might be small enough to hold in the palm of your hand, yet there’s no doubt a directional clutch makes a big impact. Herringbone | $499 CLASSIC ESSENTIALS ‘Madison’ wool cropped trouser Herringbone | $299 The sumptuous jersey dress, butter-soft leather skirt and catwalk-worthy voluminous winter coat – there’s no need to compromise on style with these covetable new season essentials. Leona Edmiston | $345 Elevate ladylike style to the next level with a chic leather skirt. Witchery | $109.95 THE TREND: SAPPHIRE A holiday to St Tropez might be a few months off yet but this season’s rich blue hues will have you dreaming of lazy sun-filled days on the Riviera – pronto! A standout trend from the international Fall 2012 Ready To Wear runway shows and a favourite with stylish leading ladies including Rachel McAdams and Cameron Diaz, blue in all its incarnations dominates the style stakes. The moral of the fashion story here is; don’t dive into a pool of black when temperatures drop, up the ante in winter blues. As new season pieces hit stores, set your sights on dresses, winter coats and statement accessories in vivid shades of cobalt, sapphire and azure. GET HEELED Striking in its simplicity, this sleek Gianvito Rossi pump in black quilted leather with patent toecap and heel gets straight to the point. A star buy for this season and beyond, there’s no need to worry about setting a foot wrong. From a selection of styles at Varese Shoes Take your cue from Parisian style queens and cover up in a supersized coat. Witchery | $369.95 A compact box clutch with a striking design feature works perfectly with a LBD for cocktail hour. ‘Scarab’ metal hardcase clutch. Mimco | $199 MUST‒HAVE SHIRTS A wardrobe staple for evening allure. ‘Mulberry’ silk shirt. Herringbone | $209 Pretty pleats and a pastel hue make this 9–5 ‘Loris’ shirt a favourite. Max&Co. | $195 Truth be told, chemically cobalt aluminate is toxic but when it comes in the form of a sophisticated two-piece suit, it’s simply intoxicating. And you won’t have to think twice about what to wear your new season threads with either because blue hues play nice with most other colours too – think white, black and brown for classic cool or emerald green, warm red and citron to make a fashion statement. The influential designer’s career began back in the mid 1980s with her debut fashion label Morrissey Edmiston, launched with then business partner Peter Morrissey. By the time the duo parted ways, Leona had cemented herself as one of Australia’s finest design talents, going on to launch her eponymous label, Leona Edmiston, with business partner Jeremy Ducker in 2001. A tribute to the dress in all its forms, Leona Edmiston is for the confident, urban woman. Classic yet feminine, Leona’s frocks exude personality and sophistication making them perfect to take the busy professional from the office to the opera with ease. The revered designer says she understands that a woman ‘wants to look effortlessly glamorous, sexy and chic no matter what occasion she is thrown into’, evident in her new Autumn/Winter collection which focuses on abstract galaxy and romantic floral prints sourced from Europe and New York as well as vintage influences such as bat-wing sleeves and 50s-style silhouettes. Luxe fabrics are also of paramount importance to the designer who favours sleek jersey, soft silks and crisp cottons to bring to life the flattering cuts of her frocks. And, while temperatures might be dropping, Leona still has a sunny outlook for the new season, listing beautiful bold colours and vivacious prints as her top trends for Autumn/Winter. In fact, the designer encourages all women who visit her store to experiment with their style. ‘Have fun with colours and prints, [and] don’t be afraid to add a clashing bag or patterned tights to change the look from day to night.’ Wise words from a woman in the fashion know. If you have time in your lunch break, visit Leona’s Chifley Plaza store on Level 1 to view her new collection. A woman wants to look glamorous, sexy and chic no matter what occasion she is thrown into. 05 IPOH5508 Ben&Co_publication_FA.indd 5 20/04/12 11:57 AM New York Herringbone jacket (front) Herringbone | $499 ‘Uptown Sharkskin’ navy suit (rear) Herringbone | $1,195 CLASSIC ESSENTIALS THE TREND: DAPPER Dapper designs with a sense of nostalgia and timeless masculinity dominated the Milan catwalk, so it’s little wonder that this season being fashion forward is all about travelling back in time. Taking inspiration from eras past, this season’s men’s collections have a distinct traditional English gentleman vibe. And perhaps this is thanks in part to a renewed interest in the monarch – in particular the dashing Prince William – and other famous men of that ilk, including Daniel Craig and David Beckham who are single-handedly bringing dapper back. Luxe wool suits, silk bow-ties and dinner jackets all fit for royalty are the benchmark for the modern gentleman, and just as well stores are following suit. Sophisticated tailored suiting in regal navy and charcoal, jacquard sweaters, fine knits and crisp chinos are what well-dressed men are made of. And as they say ‘the devil is in the details’, so all the extras matter too – think silk pocket handkerchiefs, knitted ties, tweed caps and blackrimmed spectacles. Far from being stuffy, this style revolution is more than just a fad or a persona reserved just for the boardroom, it’s a way of life for the man who likes to work hard, play hard and look good doing so. BROGUES ARE BACK! The ‘Jim’ cable-knit sweater epitomises weekend cool. M.J. Bale | $399 ENGLISH GENT Weekend style is made easy with these chic accessories which will take you from work to play effortlessly. Dressed up or down, chinos exude style. Oxford | $89 ‘Davis’ grey fedora hat Oxford | $39 ‘Superga’ sneakers Herringbone | $89.95 ‘Dita’ spectacle frames Lifestyle Optical | $699 Steer’s head print overnight bag R.M.Williams | $629 Put your best foot forward in a pair of brogues. Earn fashion points in a knit vest with a twist. Once thought of as a traditional men’s country shoe, the brogue is making a big splash in the fashion world. In line with the revival of nostalgic fashion looks, this style of shoe also harks back to its English style roots, and yet is simply perfect for the modern man. Staying true to tradition, brogues look best in tan and black and make the ideal partner for a debonair suit or elegant countrified ensembles for the weekend. Auburn brogues Crockett & Jones edgware brogue R.M.Williams | $450 Herringbone | $599 Oxford | $59 POLISHED Here’s how to keep your brogues shining. Chifley Shoe Worx suggests first cleaning off dirt with a damp rag then applying a coat of polish with a clean cloth. Allow to dry, and then rub the entire shoe with a shoe brush, followed by a clean soft cloth until they are polished to a shine. 06 IPOH5508 Ben&Co_publication_FA.indd 6 20/04/12 11:57 AM THE MAN AND THE SUIT A suit says a lot about a man. It gives clues to his profession, his wealth and his social status, and for this reason quality is king. Like anything designed to impress, quality fabrication and workmanship are priceless. You can bet investing in a good suit will pay dividends, because unlike other fashion trends, suiting styles are not necessarily unique to each passing season. Yes, distinct styles of suits feature more prominently from year to year, but considering the suit is the uniform of the working man, it’s safe to say that when amortised over its lifespan, the money spent on a quality suit is extremely good value. A good suit should have both classic and masculine qualities that reflect the chic of the 1930s and the flair of the 1960s. And although the single-breasted style will never date, the cut can give away a suits age. The three key silhouette elements of this season’s suit are broad shoulders, a nipped waist and slim trousers, implying an athletic physique. To break it down even further, the most popular cuts are the ‘sleek cut’ and the ‘confident cut’. Given new life by Don Draper in the TV show Mad Men, the ‘sleek cut’ is for the man who likes to wear his suit with restraint and an air of ambiguity. There’s no doubt it’s impeccably made, usually in dark fabrics, and unfussy in the details; slim-medium sized notched lapels, a top button which sits just on the navel and a breast pocket to hold a simple pocket handkerchief. On the other hand the ‘confident cut’ speaks volumes through the somewhat overt use of details. Peaked lapels, and a distinct 1970s feel through the use of more flamboyant fabric choices appeal to the gent who doesn’t mind standing out from the crowd. Another suit making a revival is the doublebreasted suit. Made popular by stylish 1960s Hollywood icon Carey Grant, the doublebreasted cut is once again enjoying favour in the male world of business fashion. In fact, it’s a younger wave of suave men who are bringing back tradition in their own stylish way. While the style may be retro, the cut must be modern to bring it into the now. When shopping for a double-breasted suit ask for the ‘Kent cut’, named after Prince WELL SUITED A selection of styles from Herringbone George, Duke of Kent, and characterised by a longer lapel line that extends into the waist. For a timeless fit, visit Argy’s Tailoring & Alterations at Chifley Plaza for bespoke service that only a professional tailor can offer. A good suit should have both classic and masculine qualities. Depending on how often you wear it, as a general rule, a suit should not be dry cleaned more than 1–2 times a year, as the chemicals used will cause the colour to fade and affect its integrity. Instead, Maurice Dry Cleaners of Chifley Plaza suggests to remove wrinkles and restore your suit’s appearance by asking your dry cleaner to press it. Similarly, hanging your suit outside to air on a cool day will remove smoky and musty smells. To preserve your suit for longer, hang it on a sturdy hanger with wide spread arms and store it in a fabric suit bag which will allow the suit to breathe. THE ECLECTIC THE SUAVE THE CLASSIC Light-coloured fabrics and check patterns add personality to single-breasted suiting styles. Take inspiration from the runway and add flourish with a contrasting jewel-toned polka-dot bow-tie and stylish pocket handkerchief for a point of difference guaranteed to set you apart from a room full of suits. Look for smart unobtrusive details like a double pocket, top stitching and luxe lining to give a classic navy suit a subtle edge. A smart light-blue shirt and red and navy striped tie complete the look with confidence. Leaving the last button undone is a common practice for ease of movement and to ensure proper drape of the jacket. Designed to accentuate the v-shape of a well worked body, this style of suit heightens the masculine form and works just as well in dark-coloured fabrics as it does in light. To ensure the silhouette is modern, the jacket should skim the body and the shoulders should be soft and tailored. Phuket gets the supermodel tick of approval from Naomi Campbell www.okmagazine.com.au 93 This week’s hottest news C elebrating her first Mother’s Day with her four-month-old son, Flynn, this weekend, super-glam mum Miranda Kerr, 28, has made no secret of how much she is loving being a mother. The model talks exclusively to OK! about going back to work, the precious advice she got from her own mum and the secret language she and Flynn share… Of being a mum, the supermodel says, ‘It has given my life a whole new purpose’ What does motherhood mean to you? Becoming a mother is one of the most magical experiences I have ever had. It has made me appreciate the beauty in the circle of life and given me a whole new definition of love. What’s the best thing about being a mum? Every day brings something new, and I love watching Flynn’s personality evolve. What’s surprised you the most? How intelligent our bodies are and how energetically connected you are to your child. I wake up as soon as Flynn opens his eyes! What’s that one little thing that Flynn does that always makes you smile? When he shows me his adorable smile and hearing his cute laugh. I love watching all his beautiful little expressions while he is talking to me in a language only he can really understand. INTERVIEW BY ROSIE McKAY ADDITIONAL TEXT BY MARTA JARY PHOTOGRAPHS BY BIG, SNAPPER What was the best advice your mum, Therese, ever gave you? Trust yourself and your instincts. Remember that every baby is different. In what way has motherhood exceeded your expectations? I don’t think you can ever truly know what to expect, but I could never have imagined the feelings I have for my child or the new-found strength I have discovered within myself as a result of giving birth. I think once you do that, you realise you can really achieve anything! In light of your recent return to the catwalk, how do you plan to juggle motherhood with work? I’m blessed to have the support of my partner [actor Orlando Bloom], and Flynn is so amazing I can bring him to work. It’s also about prioritising and managing my time around his schedule. What is your advice for first-time mums? Make your own rules and trust in your ability to be a mother. As a thank you to Miranda for her time, OK! has made a donation to Kids Helpline. Turn to page 78 to see what other Aussie celeb mums are getting up to this Mother’s Day. 30 www.okmagazine.com.au Miranda exclusive: ‘BEING A MUM IS MAGIC’ Yummy mummy Miranda Kerr chats exclusively to OK! about the light of her life – baby son Flynn May 16, 2011 OK! A side-by-side comparison of Flynn and a baby Orlando showed those same chubby cheeks and deep-set eyes. Flynn might still have model Miranda’s height, though.‘He’s, like, 20 pounds [9kg]. MYTH BUSTED! DIET AND EXERCISE MYTH #1 Crunches will get rid of your belly fat. Unfortunately you can’t pick and choose areas where you’d like to burn fat, it is equally burnt across your body. In order to burn fat, you should create a workout that includes both cardiovascular and strength training elements. DIET AND EXERCISE MYTH #2 Never eat before a workout. Fuel from food and fluids is required to provide the energy for your muscles to work efficiently, even if you are doing an early morning workout. Try eating a small meal or snack one to three hours prior to exercise. Eat some fruit, yoghurt, or whole wheat toast. DIET AND EXERCISE MYTH #3 Not eating is the best way to lose weight. Having a healthy diet with five good meals per day and moving more will help you lose weight and maintain the lean muscle mass needed to boost metabolism. People often believe the diet and exercise myth that they must take drastic measures to lose weight, such as eating less than 1200 calories per day, but such diets usually do not provide adequate fuel for the body and will slow metabolism. In 1793, only three years after migrating from England to Australia, the Governor of New South Wales gave John Macarthur his first 100 acres of land, which he successfully cultivated. In 1796 John purchased his first Merino sheep, eventually growing his flock to over 4,000, resulting in international sales and the start of the Australian Wool Industry we know today. This winter the Macarthur family’s legacy lives on in the local area and in the chic woollen pieces that form the foundation of the perfect 2012 winter wardrobe; think cosy knits, tailored trousers and jackets with warm scarves. In fact, the Archduke Maximilian of Austria’s proposal to Mary of Burgundy in 1477 is believed to be the first noted use of a diamond ring to signify engagement – a tradition still alive today.
