2010/11 - Jardines
Review 2010-2011
is the Jardine Matheson Group’s philanthropic initiative
established to make a difference in the area of mental health. Led
by the Jardine Ambassadors, the MINDSET programme aims to
raise awareness and understanding of mental health issues and
to change attitudes, while at the same time providing practical
support for charitable initiatives in the sector.
Background
MINDSET Place residents
share a joke with the
Jardine Ambassadors
during a gathering held
at their new home.
The Jardine Matheson Group
focuses its philanthropic
activities on the under-resourced
area of mental health and where
the Group feels it can make a
lasting difference. MINDSET is
a registered charity in Hong
Kong established by the Group
in 2002 to spearhead the
initiative.
Driven by the Jardine
Ambassadors, young volunteer
executives across the Group,
MINDSET aims to change people’s
attitudes by raising awareness
and understanding of mental
health issues, and to provide
direct assistance for individuals,
families and organizations in need
of help.
Following on from the success
of the Group’s MINDSET
programme in Hong Kong, this
social initiative was launched in
Singapore in 2010.
MINDSET supports nongovernmental organizations within
the mental health sector in the form
of in-kind donations, volunteer
services, work experience and cash
donations, and works alongside
government agencies.
MINDSET has received strong
support from Group companies,
including Hongkong Land, Dairy
Farm, Mandarin Oriental, Jardine
Motors, Jardine Lloyd Thompson,
Jardine Cycle & Carriage and
various companies within Jardine
Pacific.
MINDSET’s initiatives are focused
on the following areas:
• Education and Prevention –
to raise awareness of mental
health issues among young
people through the in-school
Health in Mind programme,
co-organized with the
Hospital Authority;
• Reintegration – to support
effective reintegration
services to mental health
hospitals and agencies
through patient support
activities and a job training
programme within Jardine
Matheson Group companies
for rehabilitated people;
• Financial Support – to fund
direct support services for
the mentally ill, their carers
and their families;
• Community Awareness –
to undertake a range of
initiatives that enhance
community awareness of
mental health related issues.

Chairman’s Message
“I am pleased to see that through this initiative, the Group is assisting
residents in reintegrating into the community and making a significant
contribution to the mental health sector.”
MINDSET Chairman
Anthony Nightingale
(second right) and Dr York
Chow, Secretary for Food
and Health (third left) join
other guests at the opening
of MINDSET Place.
Following the opening last year
of MINDSET Place, a long stay
care home for people recovering
from the effects of chronic
mental illness, we have received
very positive comments from
its residents and families. By
offering a professional level
of care and support for the
residents, MINDSET Place has
provided a nurturing home-like
environment for the residents
within a vibrant community.
I am pleased to see that
through this initiative, the
Group is assisting residents in
reintegrating into the community
and making a significant
contribution to the mental
health sector.
2
In addition to establishing
MINDSET Place, this year the
Group has made a donation
to support the setting up of
the Child & Adolescent Mental
Health Centre of the Tuen Mun
Hospital. Opened in May 2011,
the Centre replaces a facility
that was previously operated
at Castle Peak Hospital. Its
relocation away from a mental
hospital setting is intended to
reduce the stigma attached and
concerns felt by parents.
With the creativity displayed by
IKEA’s design team, the Centre
now carries colourful designs
and provides a cheerful and
lively environment that appeals
to children. Dr Chung Kin-lai,
Chief Executive of Castle Peak
Hospital and Siu Lam Hospital,
was told that the Centre is
‘arguably the best mental health
centre for children in Hong
Kong’. I am happy to see our
involvement in supporting the
Centre and making good use of
the Group’s expertise in helping
the patients in need.
Another new initiative this year
has been the appointment of the
MINDSET Coordinators within the
Group operating companies.
Nine years on since the inception
of MINDSET, it has been felt that
further efforts should be made
to promote MINDSET within the
individual Group companies.
As senior executives within
the companies, the MINDSET
Coordinators have been
appointed to help achieve
this objective and enhance
employees’ participation in
MINDSET and mental health
activities.
The Coordinators will play a
pivotal role in supporting the
work of the Jardine Ambassadors
in leading and encouraging
colleagues to take an interest
and be more active in MINDSET
activities, and help pull together
the necessary resources where
appropriate to steer and
implement the initiatives in their
respective companies. This is
certainly no easy task, and I
wish them every success.
The Jardine Ambassadors
continued their fine efforts to
organize the various MINDSET
events. Their enthusiasm and
involvement in MINDSET’s
activities are clearly evident in
the fine progress that has been
made.
One of the excellent
achievements of the Jardine
Ambassadors was Walk Up
Jardine House 2011, which
brought in a record HK$3.1 million
in support of mental health
initiatives. As participants
comprising staff, business
associates, students from the
Health in Mind programme and
families and friends raced or

walked up 49 floors of Jardine
House, the event also helped
increase public awareness of
mental health issues.
The Health in Mind programme
continued to benefit students,
teachers and parents as
activities were organized in
secondary schools to help
students establish a positive
attitude towards mental health.
The number of participating
schools has expanded to 22,
underpinning the success of the
programme under the guidance
of the professionals from the
Hospital Authority.
In mainland China, MINDSET
sustained its efforts to support
school children affected by the
2008 earthquake in Sichuan by
offering funding to the Hong
Kong Polytechnic University
for the provision of integrated
services.
Following on from the success
of the MINDSET programme
in Hong Kong, this charitable
initiative is now up and running
in Singapore. While the
circumstances in Singapore
may differ, much of the
experience gained in Hong
Kong will be of value to the new
initiative.
MINDSET’s achievements are
the result of a collaborative
effort. I would like to thank
the Advisers and Steering
Committee members for their
advice and support, and also
many of our associates from
the NGOs and government
agencies. We look forward to
another productive year.

Donations
About 57% of MINDSET’s
HK$6.9 million cash donations
went to the direct services for
the mentally ill and rehabilitated
individuals, including adults,
teenagers and the children
in need. Services, including
training workshops, vocational
assessment and counseling,
were provided to help these
rehabilitated individuals
reintegrate into society.
Through the Health in Mind
programme, MINDSET
promotes mental wellness and
understanding by empowering
adolescents with knowledge and
establishing positive attitudes
towards mental health issues.
About 32% of MINDSET’s
funding last year was allocated
to public education amongst
young people.
About 11% of the funding was
allocated to supporting the
carers of the mentally ill, who
are in need of both physical and
emotional support to deal with
the pressure in taking care of
their family members who are
mentally ill. They benefited
through experience sharing
and knowledge obtained
in mutual help groups and
training sessions organized
by the NGOs supported by
MINDSET. In addition to this
HK$6.9 million, a one-off
donation was made for the
setting up and furnishing of
MINDSET Place in the amount
of about HK$4 million. MINDSET
is also underwriting the running
costs of MINDSET Place for a
minimum of six years.

Health in Mind in its
Ninth Year
The Health in Mind programme
is a platform to promote among
young people a positive attitude
towards mental health. With
Jardine Ambassadors leading
the efforts, the programme
aims to empower secondary
school students as advocates
to promote mental health
to fellow students, their
families and the public at large
through interactive activities
and experiential personal
development training.
6
In its ninth year, the Health in
Mind programme in 2010/2011
supported more than 300
student advocates from 22
secondary schools in Hong
Kong. Over 90 in-school
activities, volunteer services,
interactive workshops and
seminars were organized,
benefiting over 26,000 students,
parents, teachers and people
suffering or recovering from
mental illness.
The programme has achieved
success thanks to the
guidance from the mental
healthcare professionals from the
Hospital Authority, the clinical
psychologist from MINDSET, and
teachers from the participating
schools.
City Orienteering
Over 230 participants, including
student advocates from ten
Health in Mind schools, service
users from Caritas Hostel, Fanling
and the Jardine Ambassadors,
joined the activity in January 2011.

Job Training Programme
The job training programme aims
to provide training opportunities
to rehabilitated individuals
to help them reintegrate into
society. Group companies
offered service users training
opportunities or contract term
employment ranging from a few
weeks to one year. The Jardine
Ambassadors have partnered
with Baptist Oi Kwan Social
Service, Caritas Hostel – Fanling,
Caritas Jockey Club Lai King
Rehabilitation Centre, Castle
Peak Hospital, Fu Hong Society,
Kwai Chung Hospital, the Mental
Health Association of Hong Kong,
8
New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation
Association, Phoenix ClubHouse
and Richmond Fellowship of
Hong Kong since the launch of
the programme in 2005.
The programme thus far has
benefited over 879 rehabilitated
individuals. In 2010, 15 Group
companies offered 31 training
positions ranging from one
to six months and ten group
placements on simple tasks such
as mass mailing of letters and
coupon stamping. A total of 68
individuals participated in the
programme which is designed
to enhance their self confidence
and prepare them to return to
full-time work. A good
proportion were offered
permanent jobs in the market
after the placement in Jardines.
To encourage the hiring of more
rehabilitated people throughout
the Group, MINDSET organized
two half-day workshops for
Jardines employees to impart
knowledge on how to work with
the rehabilitated individuals.
Clinical psychologists, doctors,
occupational therapists and
social work professionals were
invited to share their experience
in helping rehabilitated patients
reintegrate into society.

and families. The beneficiaries
are as follows:
Hong Kong
MINDSET Place
MINDSET Place provides a long
stay care home with a high
standard of professional care
services for people recovering
from chronic mental illness.
Operated by New Life Psychiatric
Rehabilitation Association,
MINDSET Place opened in
October 2010 and is fully
occupied providing residential
care services for 38 service
10
users. Among the residents,
four are engaged in open
employment, four have taken up
cleansing work training in New
Life’s supported employment
service, 15 are attending
sheltered workshops, and the
rest are attending domestic and
handicraft training at MINDSET
Place.
Thirteen service users joined a
computer training class to learn
basic computer skills. About half
of them are now able to use the
computer more independently.
Tuen Mun Hospital
MINDSET supported the setting
up of the Tuen Mun Hospital
Child & Adolescent Mental
Health Centre, which opened
in May 2011, with a donation of
about HK$1 million.
Group operation, IKEA, helped
put together the design and
furniture for the Centre, which
was converted from an ordinary
hospital setting into a cheerful
and comfortable environment
for the children and adolescent
patients.
The Centre provides in-patient,
day care and out-patient services
for children and adolescents
in a non-stigmatizing and
nurturing environment. JOS
also contributed to the project
by procuring IT equipment and
software that would assist
the children in their cognitive
development.

Community Mental
Health Link
During the three years of
MINDSET’s support for the
Community Mental Health
Link project, more than 18,000
rehabilitated individuals, their
carers and families have
benefited from the services
in some of the most needy
parts of Hong Kong. The four
participating organizations,
Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service,
the Mental Health Association of
Hong Kong, New Life Psychiatric
Rehabilitation Association and
Richmond Fellowship of Hong
Kong, were provided the finance
to employ additional social
workers to enhance their services.
The Community Chest of
Hong Kong
Jardine Matheson Limited,
Hongkong Land, Dairy Farm,
Zung Fu and Gammon continued
their support to the Community
