The Sponsoring Body: Society of Jesus The Society of Jesus, a Catholic religious order, is the sponsoring body of the School. The Society was founded in 1540 by a Spaniard, St Ignatius Loyola. For over 460 years, the Society has been sending priests and brothers to all corners of the world preaching, teaching and serving people for the Greater Glory of God. In the Society's China Province, the Jesuits run Wah Yan College - Hong Kong and Kowloon, manage Ricci Hall of the University of Hong Kong, and help with the management of Pun U Association Wah Yan Primary School. Additionally, they also operate social research centres, retreat houses, audio-visual communications centres, inter-religious dialogue centres and the Jesuit Volunteers Corps, which works especially for the poor. Soon after its foundation, the Society of Jesus chose education as one of its important missions. In The Conversion of Ignatius of Loyola fact, the Jesuits are world-famous for their distinguished educational achievements. In 1997, there were about 1.25 million students studying at 1,325 educational institutions (497 of which were secondary schools) in 68 countries worldwide. The characteristics of Jesuit Education are the care and concern for each individual. Jesuit schools care for the total holistic growth and development of every student, helping them to respect life and do their duty to society, and practise Christian values through serving the poor and working for justice. ~ 10 ~ The Spirit of Wah Yan - Throughout the Decades “The Spirit of Wah Yan” was written by Rev. Fr. R.W. Gallagher, S.J., the first Jesuit Principal of Wah Yan, and was published in the first edition of the school magazine “The Star” in 1933: The spirit of a school, like the spirit of a family or the spirit of a nation, is hard to analyse or to define. But school-spirit like patriotism or love of family, is a tremendous power. The boy who has the true Wah Yan Spirit:• is proud of his school and of her past traditions. Does not engage in gossip or backbiting against the college or against his masters or companions. • appreciates the sacrifices his parents are making to give him a good education. Shows his appreciation and gratitude by steady work and by keeping his personal expenses as low as possible. • is polite. Always behaves as a gentleman. • is truthful and trustworthy. Any coward can tell lies, but it takes a man to tell the truth. • does not boast in victory; does not sulk in defeat. Is a good loser. Realizes that it is a far finer and a far harder thing to take a beating manfully than to conquer. • is clean of speech. Remember this: If a boy chooses to tell you dirty stories, it is because he thinks that you have a mind fit for sewage. • is always ready to help others. Is unselfish and considerate, prompt to give up his own wishes for others’ convenience. • is not a coward before human respect. Will never offend God rather than his companions. • believes that “for a man to conquer himself is the first and best of all victories”. ~ 11 ~ School Motto: IN HOC SIGNO VINCES The words of our school motto are in the Latin language. They mean “By this sign you will conquer”. They are written on a background of a shield with a red cross. Our school badge is in the shape of a shield. The shield was used in ancient times by soldiers to protect them in battle, to defend them against attack. We interpret this shield as our readiness to stand up and defend the truth, justice, honesty and love in a world where people need these. Next comes the red cross. This cross reminds us of the sign of Christ’s love for us all. He died for us shedding His blood on the cross because He loved us. This was the supreme sacrifice. “Greater love than this no man has than to lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends”. It is with this love in us we will conquer or win – win hearts, friends, justice, peace and harmony. As light overcomes darkness so love overcomes hatred and violence. So this motto on its shield with a red cross expresses our school spirit. Our spirit is a spirit of love and care – for ourselves, for others and our environment. This spirit is shown in the way we behave, in our respect for others, in our willingness to serve those especially in need, in our generosity in sharing our gifts with others, in our compassion for those unjustly treated. In practical terms our motto expresses our desire to be students and men for and with others because we wish to love them as Christ loves us. ~ 12 ~ School Prayer O Lord Jesus, be with me all through today to help me to live as I ought to live. Be with me at my lessons, so that I may grow in knowledge and never give up any task, no matter how hard and difficult it is, until I have tried my best. Be with me at my games, so that, whether I win or lose, I may play fair, and if I win I may not boast, and if I lose I may not make excuses. Be with me in my pleasure, so that I may enjoy your gifts and never use them selfishly or to hurt others. Be with me in my home, so that I may be kind and considerate, and that I may try to make the work of others easier and not harder. Be with me in the streets, so that I may be a credit to my school and to those who love me and to myself. Be with me in my disappointments and sufferings, so that I may have strength to overcome my problems and accept my pain with courage and cheerfulness. Help me to be the kind of boy you want me to be. This I ask for your love’s sake. Amen. ~ 13 ~ School Mission Statement of Wah Yan College, Hong Kong According to Catholic and Chinese traditions, we aim at the greater development of each student in each of the following areas — moral, intellectual, physical, social, aesthetic and spiritual. Through care and concern for each individual, we seek to nurture students: 1. whose acquisition of knowledge and skills is joined to values; 2. who will become reflective and accept their strengths and limitations; 3. who know God’s love and practise Christian values especially through serving the poor and working for justice. The achievement of the above relies on a spirit of community, co-operation, trust and respect among the managers, supervisor, administrators, teaching and non-teaching staff, students, parents and past students. ~ 14 ~ School Song of Wah Yan College, Hong Kong ~~ 15 15 ~~ Jesuit Fathers of Wah Yan College, Hong Kong Name of Jesuits Rev. To help those who already believe in Christ come to deeper appreciation of their faith; • To build a school community in which teachers, students and non-teaching staff would have a spirit of mutual respect and co-operation; • To develop in students a desire to work for a just society, and to teach them to be generous in placing their knowledge and competence at the service of others, particularly the disadvantaged; • To give students a solid moral formation which will enable them to lead their lives in accordance with sound principles; • To encourage students to be independent-minded in their search for knowledge, while being open to learn from the opinions of others; • To foster the emotional development of students, thereby helping them to appreciate their abilities as well as their limitations, and to get on well with others; and • To encourage a knowledge and appreciation of the students’s own culture, as well as the ability to express themselves both in Chinese and English with correctness, clarity and even elegance. ~ 30 ~ School Hymn of Wah Yan College, Kowloon ~ 31 ~ Jesuit Fathers of Wah Yan College, Kowloon Name of Jesuits Rev.
