Welcome Spring! It is with great pleasure that I get to report to you that we are closing out another financially successful year. Thanks goes to the geniuses up in the attic for keeping us on budget and exceeding our revenue and cash flow goals for the year. Did you have a chance to stop by the Open House last Sunday? It was beautiful and delicious. We had a very large turnout of both members and guests, and we registered eighteen weddings/events for the upcoming year as well as tours for several prospective new members. We still have twenty-three families on the equity membership waiting list, and we have added a couple of new social memberships recently. We have some more fun and exciting events coming up this month. The junior tennis teams have started their season and are keeping Coach Liz BUSY. Our Junior Team Tennis participation has doubled over the past three years, and we now have approximately forty juniors playing USTA tennis for ATCC. Speaking of increased participation, the entire tennis program is booming! Paul’s 101 and 201 clinics have brought out the inner tennis players in many formerly non tennis playing members, and everyone is enjoying our wonderful facilities, the sunny, dry weather and each other’s company. Barry Segal House & Grounds Liaison [email protected] One naggy reminder: As you are enjoying the Club and the beautiful new grounds and facilities, please remember to be respectful of others in the fitness center. Please wipe down the machines after use and bring personal headphones or earbuds if you want to rock your workout. Julia McCallin HR Liaison [email protected] Please join us for Beer Club on April 26th (even if beer is not your thing), and do not forget about Easter Brunch and the Easter Egg Hunt on Easter morning, April 20th. Answer: Pilgrims. Altadena Town & Country Club 4 MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER by Craig Sloane Just love the spring. Cool mornings, warm day times, cool evenings. Nothing better than a glass of wine and a stroll thru the yard as the sun sets on the mountains. Might have been the weather or my wife’s green thumb, but for the first time this past winter, we were able to grow artichokes (which are now ready to be harvested), and continue to have a bumper crop of delicious winter tomatoes, a half dozen different varieties. We are looking forward to the spring as we prepare our beds for the next season’s plantings. At ATCC, you may have noticed some work being done on the hill side, between the lower parking lot and the ping pong area/ building. We have begun stage 1 of our Club garden project. Taking advantage of the vision of Club members David Moore and long time advocate, Leslie Aiken, our staff are building more than just a garden, but a beautiful focal point, complete with decomposed granite paths, river rock garden beds and a water feature. Our stage 1 of the Club garden should be completed during April, with stage 2 and 3 to follow shortly thereafter. Chef couldn’t be more excited. Nothing better than fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs, from garden to table within hours...or even minutes. As we approach the one year anniversary of the completion of our fitness/terrace patio/wedding court construction project, the demand for outdoor dining is at an all time high. It’s great to see so many excited members, but remember, an early reservation will guarantee you that prime spot on the patio. Other tidbits every member should know: we will not be offering a summer membership this year, as we currently have a waiting list in the mid 20’s. We add a couple of prospective members to our waiting list each month, so if you have a friend or family member who is interested, tell them to get their application in ASAP. Many on the waiting list have opted to join as Social Members, so that they can get a taste of the good life, while waiting for an equity membership to become available. One other note. We are working with a new Kids Klub contractor, have some great new ideas, and plan to renovate the area in the Fall. In closing, I wanted to encourage ATCC members to support the Altadena Guild’s Home Tour on May 4th. I wouldn’t normally plug a non-Club event in the newsletter, however, this year’s tour will take place on La Solana Drive, which has a very deep connection with ATCC. House’s designed and built in the 20’s were sold with a Club membership included, with the expectation that homeowners would do most of their dining at the clubhouse. Many of our current Club members live on La Solana and have opened up their homes for this event. I look forward to seeing you on the home tour and at the Club! I love the recently reinvented Vegetable Tikka Masala with raita and papadam imported from India, as well as the Miso Glazed Salmon and the Linguini Florentine. Shrimp now can be added to many of our salads and entrees for a healthy pop of protein. Many of you will be delighted to see the Anti-Oxidant Salad back on the menu (pictured right). And the carnivores among us will be delighted with the new Pulled Pork Burger and the perfectly seasoned 1/3rd pound and 8oz sirloin burgers. Save room for dessert, though, as Chef Matt has created an array of inventive new desserts. glass. The stainless steel gadget allows us to pour wines by inserting a needle through the foil and cork, with the remaining space filled with argon gas. When the needle is extracted, the cork reseals itself, leaving just a pinprick in the foil. With this new system, we’ve now added eight new “reserve” wines by the glass. If there are other wines you’d like to see by the glass, just let us know! But a great new menu isn’t all that’s in store for your next visit. It is a very exciting time for ATCC Tennis players - with several big new additions and modifications to the tennis program. First, the housekeeping stuff. As approved in the last Tennis Committee meeting, and due to the amazing growth of our Youth Program (thanks Coach Liz), we have made the following modifications to the court reservation system: Juniors will be able to make court reservations 10 days in advance via the new, express Juniors reservation website (juniors.altaclubtennis.com). Juniors will be able to reserve up to 2.5 hours during primetime and up to 3.5 hours during the day and weekends. Courts 1 and 2 will be reserved exclusively for Junior play and practice on weekday evenings from 5-8 p.m. As many of you know, it is often difficult to balance the many constituencies at the Club and provide a well-rounded and diverse program of amenities and activities to meet the needs of the greater group of members. Unfortunately, with limited space available, the tennis committee is charged with making some difficult decisions as we endeavor to build the best private club program in the San Gabriel Valley. So as we say “hello” to an enhanced tennis program - we must say “goodbye” to a historically popular program at the Club - effective this year we will be discontinuing the Dolphin Swim program and all aquatic activities as we make way for our new stadium tennis court! The pool will close effective 4/1/14 and construction will begin on our brand new ATCC Centre Court! This north/south tennis court will include state of the art clay surface and seating that will accommodate up to 300 spectators, all in the space currently occupied by the pool and deck area. The new Jacuzzi area will remain. And for you swimmers - we will be installing a 10x20’ above ground Doughboy pool in the upper meadow area (picture below). Margarita Tennis Mixer Friday, April 25th | 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Margaritas and tennis…need I say more?
