Five Common Car Insurance Mistakes
Buying vehicle insurance is a necessary that can turn into a dreaded chore. It can take
time to shop around to find the coverage and price that is right for you. If you have purchased a new car or want to change insurance companies for a better deal, remember to
avoid these common mistakes.
1. While it may be convenient and save some time, don’t go with the first company you
contact. Plan on spending some time calling several carriers to find the best deal.
2. If you are in the market for a new car, do your homework ahead of time. The car of
your dreams may be in your budget, but the insurance may not. Find out what it will
cost to insure your car before you go car shopping.
3. Once you’ve settled on a carrier and policy, be sure to take the time to review and
read the policy before you sign it. It may seem easier to just trust your agent has gone over all the important points, but
it could cost you in the long run if you don’t end up having the coverage you expected.
4. In order to save money, you may be tempted to negotiate a policy with lower limits, but this could leave you vulnerable
in the event of a catastrophic accident. Everything of value you own--your car, home, and savings--could be at risk if
you don’t have adequate coverage. Be sure to have the right limits in place for your financial situation.
5. Finally, don’t forget to get all the discounts available to you. Depending on your regional market, you may be able to
get discounts for having a homeowner’s policy with the same carrier, having anti-theft devices installed, insuring multiple vehicles with your carrier, and even having a teen driver with good grades. It never hurts to ask for all available
discounts and could end up saving you big bucks.

Dear Rich,
I appreciate your column and look
forward to reading it every month. I
find the information so beneficial and
informative. Just wanted to thank you
for that. Anyway, I requested a copy
of our 2013 budget the other day after
there was a rumor circulating that we
spent over $40,000.00 on our attorney last year in our Association. We
had only budgeted for $14,500.00 for
that year.
When I asked to see the attorney bill
I noticed that there were minute to
minute charges for the most ridiculous things. I even found a charge for
a ten minute phone call from the attorney to respond to our request for a
bill from his firm. In fact, most of the
charges were from phone calls from
Board members for items that I feel
could easily have been answered by
a call to the Ombudsman’s office or
the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Can you give
me some insight as to what the heck
we’re doing wrong?

advise Boards that calling an attorney
is a business decision. Are there attorneys out there that don’t put you on the
“clock”? Yes, and it’s up to you to go
out there and find them. And it’s up to
you to look through the legal contract,
cross out and initial what you don’t like,
and stick to your guns on the changes.
There should always be at least an allowance for 5­10 minutes of conversation without incurring charges, and you
must get this in writing. Always review
your billing statements from the attorney and don’t be afraid to question and
negotiate charges that you feel need
it. And always ask the question “Am I
being charged for discussing this with
you?”. If the answer is yes, I’d look for
another attorney. Remember, a good attorney is a fair attorney. A good attorney wants to really help the Association
he represents, not bill them into submission.
The Association Board must set rules
on calling the attorney. Have your
thoughts organized and written down
beforehand, ask direct questions and
ask for direct answers. Authorize who
can call the attorney and under what
circumstances, and for how long the
conversation can last. Use what I call
a written “attorney contact log”. Have
all conversations with the attorney
logged as to the date, the exact time
the call was placed, what time the attorney got on the line, exactly what
was discussed, and the exact time the
call ended. A Board should be able to
use this log to stay within budget, under normal circumstances. You have
many choices out there when selecting an attorney. Choosing the right
one for your Association is imperative.

the fees they charge. The Board must
remember that everything in the condo world is a business. The attorney
for the condo is in business not only
to provide legal advice to the Association, but to make money doing so.
When you make a phone call to the
attorney, in most cases, a clock gets
turned on. You are being billed for
the time you take from the attorney.
The hourly fees range widely from
attorney to attorney. But those fees
are usually broken up into minute
