The island was the first point of contact on American soil for immigrants from 1892 until its closure in 1954. It has been estimated that close to 40 percent of all current U.S. citizens can trace at least one of their ancestors to Ellis Island. This event at the libraries is open to anyone who would like to experience life as an immigrant in the early 20th century. It’s these immigrants who helped transform the United States into what it is today – a melting pot of tradition, language and cultures. Libraries Remember will inspire a renewed sense of tolerance, freedom and hope in our communities today. Additional programs will be scheduled throughout the grant year. Adult patrons who attend these events will earn a bus trip to Chicago in June 2012. Attend our Ellis Island event for further details. ELIMINATE YOUR LIBRARY DEBT– AUGUST 1-6 ONLY! Under Review… Rocket Boys Written by Homer Hickham Jr. ~Staff pick and review by Nancy Schaff, NCPL Central Librarian A story of the life and times of aerospace engineer Homer Hickman Jr. and his friends in Big Creek, West Virginia. It is an entertaining biography of a boy and his friends growing up during the early 1960’s when President Kennedy inspired many young men to become involved in the race for space exploration. Homer’s true exploits into rocket design and testing are remarkable. The half-dozen boys are experimenting with few resources and lots of nerve. Told from a boy’s perspective with the usual trials of teenage youths looking for excitement, romance, and a promise for their future careers. Character Counts! at the Noble County Public Library.
