Local summer camp a
dream for abused kids

For too many children, life
is a struggle. Many end up in
foster care because of physical
abuse or neglect by their providers. One local group with
international ties is making a
difference for some of those
kids, a week of camp at a time.
Royal Family KIDS Camp
is a specialized one-week camp
each summer for kids from
the area who need a little extra
love in their lives. Set up as a
non-denominational ministry
outreach, there are 209 camps
across the world in five different countries. Locally, kids
aged seven through 11 from
Barry, Lawrence and Stone
counties attend the camp at a
secured area in Cassville.
Children are referred
to the Royal Family KIDS
Camp from the Department
of Family Services primarily,
although there are a few spots
for private clientele if they are
approved.
Max Akers, co-director
for the Cassville camp, said,
“These are kids that may not
do well in a regular camp
because of the stories they
have to share. They’ve been
through so much, they need
to be around other kids who
won’t have a look of shock
on their faces when they talk
about their lives.”
He continued, “This creates an even playing field for
these kids. All of the other kids
have had similar experiences,
and when they share their stories, there isn’t any shock.”
In some regards, Royal
Family is just like many other
ministry-centered
church
camps. There is a Bible Club,
as well as traditional camp activities like swimming, fishing,
hiking, sports and arts and
crafts. In other ways, there are
aspects of the camp that are
geared toward kids who need
a little extra TLC.
Outdoor activities are
taken care of by a coach. Akers said they run a tight schedule with plenty of activities to
keep kids busy the week that
they are there with plenty of
options to appeal to all kids’
interests.
Akers said, “With our arts
and crafts, it’s not about what
they finish or even if they finish but getting that one-onone time with an adult who
cares about them.”
Additionally, one night
during the week, the volunteers hold a birthday party
for all of the kids. Akers said,
“One evening is everyone’s
birthday party. Some of these
kids may have not ever had a
birthday party before, and we
want them to experience that.
It’s a fun week for them to not
have to think about anything
else.”
It’s a sobering thought to
consider a child never having
a birthday party and provides
some perspective as to why
it’s so important for so many
of them. There is a sense of
belonging and family that the
kids receive that never goes
away. While most of the children come from the tri-county
area, Akers said that if kids

Cassville man arrested for assault, property damage

A Cassville man was arrested last week after assaulting another man in
his home. According to the
affidavit of probable cause
by Barry County Sheriff ’s
Deputy Cody Stephens. Herman Tilford, 53, pushed the
victim and held him against
the wall.
The incident happened
at Tilford’s home on State
Highway 37 on Saturday,
April 23, around 11:30 p.m.
Tilford attacked another man
who also lives in the home.

When deputies arrived, Tilford was not questioned due
to intoxication, according to
Stephens.
Wilford was charged
with domestic assault in the
second degree and held on
a $25,000 cash-only bond,
which he has since posted
and been released from the
Barry County Jail.
This is the second incident involving Tilford in the
last two months. On March
7, Tilford was involved in
property damage at a property on East County Road in
Washburn.
According to the affidavit
of probable cause by Barry
County Deputy Terry Meek,
Tilford was found crawling
on the property covered in
blood. Tilford had allegedly
broken windows out of the
building on the property as
well as breaking out windows, windshield and turn
signal assembly of a 2002
E-150 Ford van. The wounds
on Tilford appeared to be
from the broken glass.
Meek stated that Tilford
“appeared to have used bro-
ken pieces of wood and large
rocks to break the windows.”
When questioned, he admitted to having consumed
vodka and whiskey throughout the day and smelled of
alcohol.
The damage to the building and van were estimated
to be around $4,500, and
Tilford was charged with
tampering in the first degree
and property damage in the
first degree. A $10,000 cash
or crop. surety was issued for
those crimes.
Roaring River Kids’ Fishing Day May 14
The Missouri Department
of Conservation (MDC) and
the Missouri Department of
Natural Resources will hold
Kids’ Fishing Day on May 14
at Roaring River State Park.
At this event, which is from
6:30 a.m. to 8:15 p.m., an
area of the park will be designated as a fishing area for
youths age 15 and under.
At Kids’ Fishing Day,
children age 15 and under
can pick up free trout tags at
the hatchery office any time
on May 13 or all day on the
day of the event. Volunteers
will be available to assist the
youth. Children are encouraged to bring their own fishing equipment. Parents are
welcome to assist kids, but
only one pole may be used
between the helper and the
child. Adults are not allowed
to fish by themselves. Free
hotdogs, chips and soda will
be available between 11 a.m.
and 1 p.m.
Education is also part of
Kids’ Fishing Day. Throughout the day, seminars will
be held on fish cleaning, fish
cooking, Dutch oven cooking, taxidermy, watersheds,
knot tying, fly tying and fly
casting, how to fish Roaring
River, stream biology and
other subjects. A hatchery
tour will show how trout are
raised. A program on Missouri snakes will be given
using live specimens. If kids
attend three classes, they will
be entered into a drawing for
prizes. The drawing will be
held at 5 p.m. Children must
be present to win. Classes are
also open to the whole family, but only children may enter the drawings.
Volunteers are needed to
help out with this event. Individuals wishing to volunteer do not need to be experienced anglers. If you would

Dogwood Car Show

The Cassville Area Chamber
of Commerce will host the
30th Annual Dogwood Car,
Truck and Motorcycle Festival. The Festival will be held
around the Cassville square
on Saturday, May 7. Registration will take place inside
of the court house from 7:30
a.m. to 9:30 a.m. with judging
set to begin immediately.
The chamber office, located
at 504 Main Street, is currently
accepting early entries. The
first 100 show entries will receive a goody bag, including a
commemorative dash plaque,
along with other items donated from local businesses. Entry fee is $20 per vehicle. Admission is free for spectators.
The Dogwood has a strong
history in Cassville and is fun
for both car enthusiasts and
the general public. The event
offers disk-jockey music and
entertainment, food vendors,
shopping and over 100 cars
parked around the square.
Event t-shirts, sponsored by
Shumaker Tire and Wheel, are
available at the event.
At 12 noon, participants
will be asked to start their cars
and rev their engines for Dogwood tradition, “thunder on
the square.”
Participants will have the
opportunity to compete for the
Top 30 Dogwood Awards and
30 specialty picks.

Club’s Bull Blast on Saturday night was a huge success, but the theft of one
of the rodeo’s promotional
signs has organizers dismayed.
Herb Primrose, Rotary
Club member, said that
the sign stolen was valued
at around $125 and was
ordered by Rotary for the
event. He said, “It’s just sad,
we raise money for the community and have that loss.”
The sign was stolen from
the intersection of Highway
37 and Farm Road 2160
across from the Cassville
Airport and directed spectators to the event at the
Bill Hailey Arena. Primrose

The camp is provided free
of charge to the children who
attend thanks to efforts by the
volunteers. On average, 2830 kids attend the camp each
summer. At the end of it all,
camp would cost around $500
per child if there were no vol-
unteers. Now, as it stands, the
organization pays a little over
$200 for each of them to attend
because so much of the camp
is run by volunteer efforts. Akers said, “We do have licensed
counselors if they need it, but
that isn’t the focus.”

of almost one adult per child to
ensure they have the support
that they need. Each of them
receives in-house training to
make sure they have the skills

or neglect. Akers stated, “They
also have training to identify
the signs of physical abuse and
also lead a child to the Lord if
they feel they want to do that.
“We want the volunteers to
be able to empathize with the
kids, and not react in shock at
any of the things they hear.”
While the camp is ministry-based, children do not
have to be of any religion or
be religious at all to attend.
All who are referred are welcomed.
“If someone wants to be
a volunteer with us, we have
a process that they can go
through. We are always looking for people who want to
help,” said Akers.
Other considerations are
also made, such as the camp
being held in the secured location where no others are
attending during the week.
Akers said, “We have to make
sure the kids are protected
and someone doesn’t find out
where they are if they are noncustodials.”
He stated, “We just want
kids to experience a week of
the unconditional love of Jesus
Christ. That’s the goal.”
To raise funds for the camp,
Royal Family KIDS Camp is
holding a garage sale at the
Family Life Center in Cassville
this Friday through Saturday.
The dates are Friday and Saturday, May 6 and 7, from 7 a.m.
until 4 p.m. and Sunday, May
8, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. There
will also be a fundraising lunch
on Sunday.
Donations for the garage
sale can be taken to the Family
Life Center up until Thursday
evening.
The Royal Family KIDS
Camp will be held May 23

re-opening of the historic
lodge at Roaring River State
Park. The event will take place
at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 6 in
front of the renovated lodge
and will include an open
house to allow the public to
view the renovations.
Began in 1936 and completed in 1938, the CCC
Lodge was originally constructed by relief workers
from the Works Progress
Administration and is one
of the eight structures in the
park that are on the National
Register of Historic Places.
Originally, the third floor
contained rooms that housed
overnight guests.
The completed lodge has
six units that sleep up to
four and include a bedroom,
kitchen and a living room. A
seventh unit features a second bedroom and will sleep
six. The renovated lodge also
includes a meeting room
with commercial kitchen on
the lower level for special
events. Work on the outside
of the building included repairs and restoration, but did
not change the rustic character of the structure.
Reservations at the lodge
will be accepted for arrival
starting Sunday, May 8 and
will be managed by the park’s
concessionaire.
Gov. Jay Nixon is currently scheduled to attend
the event.

Tuesday, April 26, 2016. Mr.
Edgin, son of Gerald and
Ines Marie (Nicholson) Osburn was born on August 3,
1935, in Clayton, New Mexico. He was a 1953 graduate
of Dalhart High School in
Dalhart, Texas. On May 30,
1954, he was united in marriage to Virginia Thompson
in Dalhart. In 1967 Jim and
his family moved to Cassville
to make their home, where

years before retiring in 1995.

Opal Marie Newman, 93,
of Kansas City, passed away
Saturday, April 30, 2016, in
her home.
She was born March 31,
1923, in Purdy, the daughter of Benjamin and Maggie
(Turner) Terry. On May 11,
1949, she was united in marriage to Rayburn Newman,
who preceded her in death on

Opal received her education at Purdy, where she graduated from high school. For
many years she was a seamstress. She was of the Baptist
faith.
Opal was a part of the
Greatest Generation. She’d
seen a lot in her 93 years. Recently, she’d started looking
back on how things used to
be and made sure to tell all
the kids and grandkids about
how much had changed.
“Then,” she’d say, “when you
wanted some milk, you’d
go to the barn and milk the
cow. Now you just go to Costco and buy a gallon. Then,
when you needed some water you’d have to draw it up
out of the well. Now, you just
turn the sink on. Then, when
you wanted eggs you’d go out
to the coop and have to collect them. Now, you just go to
Costco and buy your eggs.”
She had a hundred then
and now’s, and us kids are going to miss hearing them.
Graveside services will be
at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 5,
2016, in Log Church Memorial Gardens, Butterfield, under direction of Fohn Funeral
Home, Cassville. Reverend
Mark Moller will conduct the

Aurora, passed away Tuesday, April 26, 2016, in Lacoba Homes, Monett. She was
born in California, Missouri
to Ernest and Susan Phillips
on October 24, 1921. Dixie
was raised by her maternal
grandparents and an aunt,
after her mother passed away
when she was six days old.
She was united in marriage to Carl Seal on February 14, 1943, who preceded
her in death in 1996. She
lived in Cassville from 1943
until moving to Aurora in
2008, then to Lacoba Homes
in Monett in 2013. Surviving are four children, Larry
Seal (Mary), of Conway, Ark.,
Carolyn Leonard (Jerry), of
Peculiar, Linn Seal (Paula),
of Aurora, Martha Moore
(Claude), of Verona. She
is also survived by eleven
grandchildren and fifteen
great grandchildren.
Dixie graduated from
California, Missouri High
School. She attended Business School in Kansas City
and then worked for Hallmark Cards. She worked in
the Social Security Administration Office when she first
moved to Cassville. After
raising her family, she served
as secretary and treasurer for
the Flat Creek Road District a
number of years until retirement.

Sara Jane Pilant, 75,
of Lincoln, passed away
Wednesday, March 16, 2016
at her home. She was born on
May 24, 1940, the daughter
of Virgil and Dorothy Beck.
She grew up in Cassville, and
graduated from Exeter High
School.
Sara was united in marriage to Leonard Pilant on
February 14, 1959 at New
Hope Baptist Church. They
made their home in Fayetteville, Ark., Anchorage, Ala.
and then in Lincoln for the
past 40 years, where they
owned and operated the Radio Shack in Clinton and the
Sara-Len Western Store in
Lincoln. Sara loved to sew
and quilt, read books, travel
and was always on the go.
by her parents; her husband,
Leonard Pilant in 1999; her
brothers-in-law, Howard Pilant, of Sedalia, and Charles
Thompson, of Cassville.
Sara is survived by her
sister, Ruth Thompson, of

Betty J. Stansberry, 82,
of Cassville, passed away
on Monday, May 2, 2016, at
Mercy Hospital Joplin, in Joplin. Mrs. Stansberry, daughter of Leslie and Clara (Nale)
Bateman, was born on April
9, 1934, in Cassville. She
was united in marriage to
Charles Stansberry on March
31, 1951, in Cassville; he preceded her in death on July 20,
1988. Betty grew up in Cassville. She and Charles welcomed their only child, a son,
Timmy (as she lovingly called
him) and soon after moved to
Independence. In Independence, Betty took care of the
home as well as taking care
of neighborhood children.
Soon after the graduation of
their son, she and Charles
moved back to Cassville
where she got a job at Fasco.
Betty worked at Fasco where
she had just retired after 40
years of service. She loved
her Fasco family. More than
anything, Betty loved and en-
joyed being with her family.
Many Saturday mornings and
Friday evenings were spent
going to dinner or breakfast. She shared many special
memories and meals with her
beloved granddaughter, Mandi and great-grandson, Max
who were very special to her.
Survivors include one son,
Timothy Stansberry and his
wife, Kathy, of Cassville; one
granddaughter, Mandi Lyall and her husband, Scott,
of Cassville; and one special
great-grandson, Max Lyall.
In addition to her parents,
she was preceded in death by
three brothers, Guy Bateman,
JD Bateman, and Herman
Davis; and four sisters, Hester
Horn, Bea Browning, Anna
Belle Robbins, and Helen
Peticlerc.

Arvest Bank raises funds for local food pantries Soroptomist hands out $3,200 in local grants
On April 4, Arvest Bank announced the beginning of its
sixth annual 1 Million Meals
campaign, which challenges
bank associates, customers
and community members to
fight hunger in the more than
120 communities the bank
serves by providing at least
one million meals to those
in need. Today, the bank announced the campaign has
exceeded 500,000 meals, or
halfway to its goal.
“Thanks to the support
and generosity of our communities, customers and
associates, we are happy to
announce we have raised
more than 500,000 meals so
far for our 1 Million Meals
initiative,” said Mark Davis,

Class 1 District 10 softball underway
at Pierce City
Lee Stubblefield
Sarcoxie, Southwest, and
Pierce City were opening
round winners at the Class
1 District 10 softball tournament at Pierce City on Monday night. Purdy, the top
seed, earned a first round bye.
The Sarcoxie Lady Bears
earned a gutwrenching win
over Wheaton in the first
contest. The Lady Bulldogs
held a 3-2 lead with Sarcoxie
coming to bat in the bottom
of the seventh and final inning. With two outs, the Lady
Bears scored 2 runs on a walk
off error to collect the dramatic comeback victory.
Sarcoxie advanced to play
Purdy on Tuesday night.
The Southwest Lady Trojans shutout Verona in the
second game, 4-0. Maggie
Robbins earned the complete game victory, recording
11 strikeouts. Neither team
could score until Southwest's
Vanessa Glaze powered a
2RBI double in the bottom
of the fifth. After scoring 3 in
the fifth inning, the Lady Trojans added an insurance run
in the sixth.
Verona had opportunities
stranding three baserunners
on the night.
In the nightcap, Pierce
City blanked Exeter, 16-0,
and advanced to play Southwest in the semifinals.
A total of 25 youngsters attended the 3-day volleyball
camp at Southwest High
School last week. The event
was host by Coaches Steve
Voyak and Emily Thurman

Barry County Advertiser Southwest Trap Shooters take 3rd at State

There were no surprises in
the Class 1 District 10 semifinals at Pierce City on Tuesday night. Top-seeded Purdy
took care of Sarcoxie by a 5-1
score in the first game, and
then Southwest held off host
Pierce City in the twilight
contest, 2-0.
The Purdy girls surrendered a solo home run to the
Lady Bears but no more, as
the Lady Eagles embellished
their season record to 24-2. It
was Purdy's first post-season
appearance after drawing a
bye in the first round.
Southwest jumped on
Pierce City early, scoring
twice in the bottom of the
first inning on a 2-out, 2 RBI
double from Shasta Sanders.
A pitcher's duel ensued for
the remainder of the contest,
with both Southwest's Maggie Robbins and Pierce City's
Ragan Blinzler confounding
the batters.
Robbins pitched out of a
jam in the seventh and final
inning, striking out Libbey
Strickler on a 3-2 count with
2 outs and the bases loaded.
Southwest improved to
22-3 on the season, but two
of those defeats were shutout
losses to Purdy. The Ozark
7 Conference rivals will play
for the district championship
on Wednesday night at 5:30
in Pierce City.

“Again, I was very happy
with the scores we put up Saturday. It’s been a really hectic
spring for our High Schoolers as we have several shooters competing in other school
activities. It’s been really hard
to get everyone together each
week due to Baseball, Softball, FFA, and various other
school activities. I do applaud our shooters for representing Southwest in various
other sports as our baseball,
softball, and FFA teams are
also having tremendous seasons. I think once school lets
out for the summer, we’ll be
able to get more focus on the
next big shoot in June, and
Nationals in August.”
“Being just 1 target out of
a top 3 finish and only 12 targets behind the State Champions from Logan-Rogersville is very encouraging.
Southwest has a strong trap
shooting tradition and we
have, in a sense, created the
monster that the State Championships have become. With
record shooter attendance
now topping 1,000 shooters,
other teams have picked up
the intensity that we started
in the past 16 years. The bar
is definitely a lot higher than
it was even 5 years ago. I feel
our shooters are up to the
challenge of raising that bar

GOLF CLUB UPDATE
The second of May brought
out a group of 31 golfers to
compete for player points
and other games of skill.
Some of the players beat the
course and the course took
revenge on a number of others.
In the contest for player
points, Dave Graham and
Harrold Sargent tied for 1st
with net 65's. 2nd place was
claimed by Dwane Martin
with a 67 and Terry Figgins came in 3rd with a 69.
4th place was crowded with
Ronnie Walker, Tom Burk,
Mike Flanderena, Bob Gaddis and Dan Gipple all carding net 70's.
Mel Wion was closest to
the pin on #6, Leroy Keller
on #8, Dave Graham on #11
and Tom Burk on #17.
The skins game had 6
winners. Ronnie Walker
claimed 2 skins on #1 and #6,
Dave Graham skinned on #4,
Mike Flanderena bested the
field on #7, Dwane Martin
on #16, Leroy Keller on #8
and Denver Dixon finished
off #11.
This league is open to

The Southwest Jr. High
Trap Team posted a score of
440/500 targets to claim 3rd
place at the Missouri High
School Trap Shooting Championships at the MTA Shooting facility in Linn Creek on
Saturday, April 30th.
Ty Howard led the squad
breaking 94/100 targets.
Hunter Stanley broke 92, Leland Colf – 91, Garrett Stanley – 82, and Samuel Jennings
rounded out the scoring with
a 81.
“I was really pleased with
the team’s performance.
Honestly, I was a little concerned going in as we didn’t
really have the best practice
the Wednesday leading up
to the shoot. But we went up
Friday and shot a couple of
practice rounds at the facility. They seemed to be more
focused during our practice
rounds Friday, and I was hoping it would carry through to
Saturday,” said Coach Mike
Vining.
“I think the team grew
a little last weekend as they
seemed to start forming that
“bond” that all good squads
need to be successful at this
level of competition.”
The Southwest High
School Team finished in 4th,
just 1 target behind Popular
Bluff who finished in 3rd.
Levi Moore and River
Fields both posted a 97/100
to lead the High School
Team.
