A
scratch scholarship league” in the Metro Denver area.
Several of it’s youth bowlers went on to become PBA
bowlers, including Tyler Jensen and my own son,
Michael Keily.
Everett Wendell White (Wendell as most of the
bowling community knows him) had been involved in
the sport of bowling in the Denver area since 1964.
He began his involvement in junior bowling, coaching
youth’s in 1968 at Brunswick Broadmoor Bowl
(formerly Brunswick Zone Lakewood, now closed). I
was about ten-years-old then, and he was one of my
coaches!
Wendell’s most notable and greatest contribution to youth bowling in the State of Colorado was the
founding of the Mile Hi Tour, traveling scholarship
tournament in the late 1980’s. Again with the help of
Sue Mueller and her husband Mark. There were numerous people, including myself who helped run the
Tour over the years. The Mile Hi Tour is still in existence, usually holding two stops per month at various
centers in Metro Denver and Colorado Springs.
s I contemplated writing this story about
Wendell White, I confess I had no idea
where to start, how much to write and in
what detail to write it. Most of this story
was retrieved from the December, 2005 issue of the
Colorado Bowler News. Back then I did a cover story
about Wendell and all of his achievements. Since that
story, eight years have passed so I had to do some
updating of the information, especially since Wendell
never stopped achieving new highs in everything he
endeavored to do!

From there Wendell organized the first youth
scratch league, the Mile Hi Stars Scratch Doubles at
Broadmoor in 1981. That first year was the final
season for the Rocky Mountain AJBC (American
Junior Bowling Congress), which became the Mile Hi
YABA (Young American Bowling Alliance). The
league consisted of ten doubles teams with averages
of 355-370. The league was by invitation, and only
two girls were among the original twenty bowlers.
Wendell said “it was extremely hard to get the boys to
allow girls in the league. They wanted only the highest average bowlers, and very few girls then carried
averages above 165.” The Mile Hi Stars league
moved to Celebrity Sports Center, and eventually on
to Bowl-ero Lanes in Lakewood where it remained
until 2008. It was considered the most “elite youth
Then in the early 1980’s Wendell and Sue Mueller organized the Denver Metro Junior Travel League.
The DMT League, as it’s known today, has 26 Teams,
from approximately 10 Bowling centers in the Denver area, and it too is a scholarship league, awarding
nearly $4000 each year.
Since it’s inception, Wendell estimated the Mile
Hi Tour had awarded over $500,000.00 in scholarships. I’m pretty sure that is not only a record in
Colorado, but will remain so for a very long time!
Each year the Mile Hi Tour awards over $30,000 in
scholarships to youth bowlers.
If all of that weren’t enough for one person,
Wendell also helped promote numerous other scholarship tournaments, including the Walter Miller Memorial CSBPA tournament, the International Family
Doubles Tournament, annual “Good-Bye” tournaments, and incorporated the annual “Dan Allen Memorial” tournament, held at Holiday Lanes each year
into the Mile Hi Tour, as it’s annual two day season
kick-off tournament.
Wendell’s involvement in bowling doesn’t stop
at juniors either. He was President of the Rocky
Mountain AJBC and continued on in that position
when it changed to the Mile Hi YABA. He was on
the DBA for a few years as 2nd Vice President, but
found he just didn’t have the time to devote to the
men’s association, and eventually left. He’d been on
the State YABA board since it’s inception as Director
#1 and and retired from that position a few years after
it merged to form the Colorado State USBC Bowling
Association. Wendell also remains on the new
Greater Denver USBC merged association, as a board
member until he retired last year.
Wendell was born in Shambaugh, Iowa on October 8,1934 and attended Villisca High School. He
married Beverly in Cumberland, Iowa, on January 22,
1961. They had two children, Teri and Buddy, and
one granddaughter, Tiffany. They moved to Colorado
in March, 1964. Wendell is survived by wife Beverly
and daughter, Teri and his granddaughter.
Wendell will be remembered forever as the man
who brought youth scholarship programs to the state
of Colorado. Not only did Wendell donate a great
deal of his time to youth bowling, he also donated
thousands of dollars personally to the sport. Wendell
will be greatly missed by the entire bowling community. He truly was an Icon in Metro Denver bowling!

Brooks would start out strong with 3 in a row. Dias opened by picking up a 3
pin and then going on a tear. Brooks’ look started to go away and Dias just continued to pound the pocket throwing strike after strike like he had most of the day.
Walking off shots and pumping his fist he knew the title was his. He finished with
a 247-176 win but undoubtedly he would have finished that game off for 290 if
needed to, he was in the zone! A couple 9 counts after the match was sealed was
the only reason he didn’t shoot the honor score. Mike would like to thank Kevin
Tabron for drilling the Track 505T for him when he was out on the PBA Tour;
Mike used the ball most of the day. The unique layout with a large weight hole just
to the left of the thumb was just what he needed for this pattern.
Day two, Sunday at Bowl-ero Lanes would have much lower scoring pace.
Bowlers were tackling the new 47 ft. PBA Scorpion pattern. It took a score of
1176 (196 avg.) to advance to the semi-final round on this longer pattern. This
ended up being one of the most exciting CSBT events in the history of the tour. As
scores yo-yoed up and down through the semi-final round bowlers were very close
coming down to the wire. Shawn Lee would secure the top seed with a final game
of 239 to hold off #2 seed Karl Schmidt. The third spot went to Steve Gallegos and
after that things got really interesting.
Hammer CSBT Hangs 2 More Banners!
T
Scott Roskelley,
Scott Christensen
and Mike Keily
were all bunched up
looking for those
last two spots.
Roskelley turned in
a solid 196 as Christensen faded a bit.
In the meantime
Lineal Floyd found
a look and strung
together a huge
string of strike to
come out of nowhere with a 267 and tie Roskelley for the 4/5 spot. Keily was finishing up a couple lanes away. I’m not sure if he knew exactly what he needed or not but he knew
it was going to be close. He came up in the 10th needing XX8 to force a three way
tie. He would do better than that and strike on three shots to take the 4th seed and
force Roskelley and Floyd into a 9th and 10th frame roll-off for the final spot.
Roskelley won the roll-off and slid in to the 5th seed to face Keily. Keily opened
the match with strikes on 4 of his first 5 shots and that would be enough to hold on
for a 204-170 victory.
Mike would face Steve Gallegos next, neither bowler got off to a fast start but
Mike struck 6 out of 7 shots in the middle of the game to post a 201 that was good
enough to move on to semi-final match against Karl Schmidt. Scores started to rise
at this point and Keily would rise to the occasion with beautiful 258-212 win to
advance to the championship where he would face Shawn Lee, Lee opened with
spare strike and Keily with strike spare. Both bowlers were locked in as they
stepped up and crushed the pocket over and over trading strikes for 4 straight
frames. In the 7th they both left 10 pins and started striking again. Lee’s spare in
the ninth would be enough to let Keily close the 10 pin gap he had facing all match
and they ended in a 248-248 tie!
For the 1st time in CSBT history there would be a 9th and 10th frame roll-off for
a title. Lee’s shot in the 9th was high and left a 3 pin he would convert. Keily then
stepped up and left three consecutive 9 counts and covered them all for a score of
38. Lee came up in the 10th and answered the bell with 3 strikes to claim his 1 st
CSBT title and earn his banner. Shawn would like to thank the CSBT for giving
the bowlers a tour to bowl. He would like to thank his wife Stephanie and his family for allowing him to bowl all weekend and for constantly picking him up when
he is down. He would like to thank Hammer for the best product in the world,
Turbo grips for making the switch grips that make it easy to go from ball to ball,
Jeff Ussery, Mike Dias, Jason Duran, Rick Schafer, Steve Badovinac, Adam
Miller, Wayne Arnson and James Croy, all of you contributed to this win.

he tour kicked of 2014 with a double header weekend January 4 th and 5th
at BZ Heather Ridge and Bowl-ero lanes. By the time the weekend was
over two of Colorado’s finest players had earned their banners. The Saturday event at Heather Ridge was one of the higher scoring events of the
season, players struck early and often on the new 32 ft. PBA Wolf pattern. Mike
Dias grabbed the early lead as he opened qualifying with a string of strikes and
started with a 277. He followed that up with a 245 and was at or near the top of
qualifying all day long. Mike started the semi-final block just as hot when he fired
a 279 en route to a 766 three game set and the #1 seed in the step ladder finals.
Joining Mike would be Steve Gallegos, George Brooks, Lineal Floyd and
Chris
Martinez.
Martinez would defeat Floyd in the
first match 235-200

Brooks. Both players made shots in
game 2 but late in
the game Brooks got
the carry he needed

longer to execute, and the tempo of your feet must slow down to match the slower
tempo of your ball and the length of the swing arc.
Here is a practice regimen that you can use to learn to adjust your ball speed on
demand. After you have warmed up and can repeat your normal ball speed take five
shots with a higher ball speed. Go back to your normal ball speed for the next five
shots. Now go to your slower ball speed for the next five shots. Now that you can
comfortably repeat all three ball speeds, you cycle through slow, normal and fast in
any order in which you are comfortable. Now make a game out of it to see how well
you can control your ball speed in each mode. Here you can use the speed indicators
in the center to see how well you control the variations in your ball speed (not the
speed itself). Only use as much variation in ball speed as you can control to within ½
MPH variation. Also make moves on the approach to learn how much difference this
makes to your alignment in moving left or right on the approach and with your target.
Learning to master three different ball speeds will help you change your reaction
from one with low carry to one with high carry if you use them in the correct situations. Practice and master them and you will find opportunities to put them into play!
As always, if you’d like to see a specific topic discussed, e-mail me at
[email protected].

B
owling is built on four principle areas of how a ball travels down the
lane. Those four elements are ball speed, axis rotation, axis tilt, and loft.
In this article we’re going to focus on ball speed and how you can make
adjustments to your ball speed to strike more often.
As a general rule, here is a guide to how your ball speed and rev rate should be
if they are reasonably “matched” to each other.
Ball Speed (MPH)
Rev Rate (RPM)
15 – 16
200 – 250
16 – 17
250 – 300
17 – 18
300 – 350
18 – 19
350 – 400
19+
400+
Your “normal” ball speed and rev rate should be adjusted so that they fall
within these general guidelines. These ball speeds are your release ball speed, not
the ball speed that is measured at the scanners on the scoring units. Those two
measurements are often 1 ½ to 2 ½ MPH different!
The length of your approach and the tempo of your start will determine your
ball speed. If your approach is long and your tempo is fast (with the ball) your ball
speed will be higher. If you have a shorter approach and a slow tempo in getting
the ball started your ball speed will be lower.
If you want to increase your ball speed move back on the approach and decrease your starting ball height in your stance. This difference is typically a shoelength back on the approach and a ½ drop in the ball height in your stance. This can
vary from person to person, and you can obtain a measurement of this by doing a
drill you first did when you learned how to bowl, but with a twist. Go to the foul
line and turn around, facing the concourse. Take your normal approach with your
normal tempo, and see where you would start. Now do the same thing with a faster
tempo and again determine where you would start. Given a faster tempo you should
be farther back on the approach the second time, perhaps by as much as two feet. If
moving back just a shoe length does not work for you, try this starting point that
you determined by this exercise as a starting point. Start the ball with a quicker
tempo as well when increasing ball speed.
The reason that this works is that when you lower your starting ball height the
ball will take a shorter amount of time to swing back and then forward. To compensate you will need an approach with a faster tempo to maintain the same timing between your swing and your feet. This combination creates more natural momentum
as you release the ball, thus more ball speed.
If you want to decrease your ball speed move up on the approach and increase
your starting ball height in your stance. Again use a starting point of a shoe length
up and ½ ball higher in your stance. You can also use the same drill as before by
going to the foul line, facing the concourse and walking with a slower than normal
tempo to determine this starting point on the approach. You will make a slower
(not later) start with the ball to create a slower swing tempo with your feet.
Again, this works to lower your ball speed because a long swing arc takes

I
n February, I will have
written this column for
seven years.
Did you ever wonder how I write this column,
month after month? From comments I got from an
anonymous reader, it appears that some of you think I
just start pounding away on the keyboard, much like the
five hundred monkeys randomly typing until they produce a work of Shakespeare.
Oh, no. It’s much more complicated than that.
First, I open last month’s column in Word. I highlight
and delete the old column, leaving only the title- My
Angle to the Pocket- a blank space, and my name. I
carefully position the cursor to that blank space.
Then I start pounding away on the keyboard like the
proverbial troop of monkeys.

January issues of many publications have articles on
happenings from the previous year. Bowling should be
no different. As a public service, let’s look back to 2013
and see what went on.
Actually, it might be better to say “reintroduced,”
since team bowling was huge back in the 1940s and
1950s. This was before the PBA was founded, so you
might quibble about whether that could be termed
“professional,” but I can pretty much guarantee that
those great bowlers- many of them future Hall of Famers
- on the Budweiser and Strohs bowling teams were not
bowling just for the fun and competition.
Bowling’s Senior Tour was renamed the PBA50
tour. This is a good change. 50 years of age may be old
for professional sports, but it won’t get you the senior
discount at Arby’s or Golden Corral. It took me many
years to get my senior discount, and I don’t want to
share it with a bunch of still-wet-behind-the-ears bowlers.
Hannah Diem of Seminole, Florida, became the
youngest USBC member to roll a certified 300 game. At
9 years, 6 months, and 19 days, Hannah broke the previous overall record (10 years, 2 months) by Chaz Dennis
of Columbus, Ohio, in 2006 and blew away the girls'
mark (12 years, 4 months) by Brandie Reamy of Farmington, Michigan, also in 2006. Hannah’s perfect game
came after games of 204 and 226. Her 730 series was a
personal best by 166 pins. Entering the night, her high
game was 224 and her high set was 564.
On the national level:
Dallas Strikers
Detroit Motown Muscle
Los Angeles X
New York City King Pins
However, my proudest accomplishment in 2013
is that I annoyed the heck out of USBC by reporting
what they were doing. They say I was inaccurate. I say
that everything I wrote was obtained from the USBC
Web site, and e-mails and conversations with USBC
employees. You judge. Oh, did I mention that, apparently in the summer of 2013, the national USBC quietly
gave up providing youth awards? And didn’t really
publicize it? I got that little tidbit from a member of the
Board of Directors. It’s OK if USBC is annoyed with
me; I’m annoyed with them, too.
Let’s see… I’ve never had a 300 game, and I don’t
even have a 600 series yet this season, let alone a 700.
Congratulations, young lady, and, no offense, but I think
I hate you….

Trey Nielsen was selected for the Youth All Star
Team in the Pikes Peak region. Incredibly, his dad,
Mark Nielsen, was chosen for the Men’s All Star Team,
and his mom, Lisa Nielsen, was chosen for the Women’s
All Star team. Although each one is a great bowler, I
cannot recall an instance when all-star honors were kept
in the same bloodline in the same year.
Speaking of writing, between the Colorado
Bowler column and my Life in Harmony newsletter for
Harmony Bowl, I wrote 45,806 words, some actually
literate and spelled correctly. Since an average novel
has about 80,000 words, I would be more than halfway
through writing a best seller, if I had any ideas. And
talent. By the way, my book had 72,716 words. But it
had cartoons, too.
But I digress.

passed away in September at the age of 83. Final frame,
also, for John Haberkorn, who died too young (53).
John gave back a lot to the sport of bowling in Colorado,
as a youth coach, coach instructor, and, at the time of his
death, a vice president of the Greater Denver USBC.
John co-taught one of the clinics I attended on my way
to becoming a USBC Silver coach. Bowling needs more
people like him.
I wrote a book, My Angle to the Pocket- a compilation of my favorite columns from this very newspaper.
I even stole the title of the column as the title of the
book. It saved me time; I didn’t have to think about it.

Billy Hardwick passed away, apparently of a heart

was the first bowler to win professional bowling’s Triple
Crown- the PBA National (1963), the Tournament of

the predecessor of the BPAA US Open. Twice named

the PBA Hall of Fame and the ABC (now USBC) Hall
of Fame. Billy Hardwick and Earl Anthony have something in common. Neither bowler won diddly squat their
first year on the pro tour. So they worked on their
games, and- I’ll go out on a limb here- it appeared to
help. Billy Hardwick, according to Bowler’s Journal,
was also the first bowler to appear in a beer commercialin 1969, for Miller High Life. Miller used the advertising slogan, “The Champagne of Bottled Beers.” I always thought that was silly. It would be like Stouffers
advertising a frozen entrée as “The fillet mignon of frozen meatloaf.”
Professional bowling introduced team bowling, with
the following teams (in alphabetical order):
Colorado in the USBC Senior Masters tournament. Tish
is a great bowler; of course she made more than a million dollars on the women’s pro tour, and you don’t do
that if you’re a shlub. I bowled in the same league as
Tish a few years back, and I can attest to her bowling
talent. It’s too bad the women’s tour folded. You could
learn a lot about bowling by watching the ladies. And
great competitors like Ms. Johnson might still be racking
up those tour victories.
Tish Johnson won both the Greater DenverUSBC Queens and the National Golden Ladies Classic
tournaments. Tish also was the highest qualifier from

Roger has been a league bowler for over 40 years. He has been a
youth bowling coach for over 17 years, and a USBC Silver Certified
Coach for more than 11 years. In 2007, he was honored by the BPAA
as their "Volunteer of the Year." In addition to writing a monthly
column for the Colorado Bowler, Roger writes and edits a bowling
newsletter, "Life in Harmony," available at Harmony Bowl in Colorado Springs. When he isn't bowling, or writing about it, Roger works
as a government contractor and seasonally as a tax advisor for H&R

YOUNG SENIOR BOWLER, SHARON
POWERS ON A ROLL
By Randy Gulley
S
haron Powers
This young lady has had a hot hand
lately. She rolled three 300 games since May
2013 with the last two coming at the tender young age of
"57'. Her first 300 was on May 13, 2013 at AMF Broadway Lanes in a Summer League (while carrying a 227
average). The second perfect game was at the same center in the Skyliners League on November 11th while
carrying a 220 average. The third 300 was at Holiday
Lanes in the Gutterdusters League on November 29th
where she was carrying a 210 average.
Three hundred games aren't unusual for Sharon
since she now has 11 to go along with five 800 series,
854 being her career high series.
This bowling season Sharon is bowling in three
leagues and one of them is a travel league. She bowls on
Monday's at AMF Broadway Lanes, Friday's at Holiday
Lanes, and the Travel League is once a month on the
third Sunday. This league bowls in the cities of Chey-
enne WY, Greeley, Longmont, Centennial, and the Denver area.
Sharon has always been an outstanding bowler and
was inducted into the Greater Denver Women's in 1996
and Colorado State Women's Hall of Fame in 1995 for
Merit of Excellence.
Sharon's bowling equipment is drilled by her boyfriend Chris Clendening who works at
Bowlero Lanes Pro Shop. She used the
Low Fare Arson for the first 300 game,
for the second 300 game it was the Hyroad Pearl ,and finally her oldie but
goodie, Anarchy for the last 300 game.
When I asked Sharon who her favorite bowlers were she said they were
from when she was on tour over 30 years
ago. The female bowlers were: Betty
Morris, Virginia Norton, Cheryl Robinson, and Donna Adamek. She now admires now is Kelly Kulick and has become good friends with her. As for the
men her favorites are the more seasoned
bowlers, Earl Anthony, Mark Roth, and
now Norm Duke who has become a
good friend as well. Sharon feels that all
of these bowlers are not only great bowlers, but are outstanding sportsmen/
sportswomen both on and off the lanes.
January, 2014
For the last ball of her last 300 game Sharon told me
"well, I had never bowled a 300 game in this league and
I told myself "you can do this", breathe, and be aggressive" I want this one".

Bowl O Pinion by Jim Goodwin January, 2014
For the Bowling News Network
Bowling has an image problem.
What is bowling? For millions, it is an iconic American game
that is simply taken for granted. It is one of a myriad of things in our
lives, and we truly don’t give much thought to our practice of occasionally hitting the alleys as a family or as a fun outing as a teen or as
a healthy social gathering place for seniors. And most people rarely,
if ever, think of bowling as a sport that can be played as a profession.
Marketing studies tell us that 70 million Americans bowl at
least once a year. That makes bowling not only a good game, but a
good business. From personal experience, I can tell you that it is not
an easy business, but running a successful center is very rewarding in
a variety of ways. The relationships that proprietors and managers
develop with good customers are priceless, and sometimes last a
lifetime.
But in 2014, is bowling a SPORT?
For those of us who have followed the pro tours or played the
game on a high level, there is no question that it is one of the most
technical and challenging sports in the world. We also know that the
vast majority of Americans don’t see it as we do. We are told that the
game is held in high regard in places like Europe and Asia, but if
those places follow the American lead of turning bowling into a mere
recreation, it won’t be long before any chance of seeing bowling in
the Olympics or on a world-wide professional tour will be lost. Perhaps it already is.
Strong evidence that bowling as a sport is in very serious trouble is abundant. Start with an 80% decline in organized league bowling since 1980. Add to that the many failed efforts to get bowling
into the Olympics, and the disappearance of an American women’s
pro tour. And the PBA Tour is really no longer a tour . . . it is a
small series of gatherings where multiple television shows are produced and players vie for relatively small prize funds. Today, if we
randomly ask Americans to name a top bowler, many if not most
would give answers like Carter and Weber, names from bowling’s
glory days of more than a half century ago. Others would not be able
to name even one.
Recent efforts to promote bowling seem to indicate that even
the top leaders in the industry have accepted that bowling is primarily
a recreation. Print ads, provided by BPAA, USBC and the International Bowling Campus in Arlington which have been running free of
charge in this newspaper and many others, say “Bowling is a healthy
way to live” and “Bowling promotes family bonding – fun for kids &
parents too,” and “Bowling provides an excellent source of positive
social interactions that can improve health and increase quality of
life.”
The ad also says that “250+ colleges and high schools in 47
states offer bowling,” and that “The bowling industry provides more
than $6 million in scholarships each year.” That is all well and good,
and we applaud these efforts; and we are proud to provide these positive messages for free, but did you notice the word SPORT anywhere

in these ads? It reminds us of the time when Bowling Inc. started and
they came up with the slogan “More Bowlers, bowling more often,
having more fun.”
We asked then “What about the sport?” and we are asking again
now.
Industry and Mainstream Media
Recently, Bowlers Journal Magazine celebrated its 100th anniversary, and it got a fair amount of attention from media sources
outside the industry. The most prominent came from an article written by Kevin Helliker for the Wall Street Journal on December 9.
Helliker’s article Bowlers Journal International Rolls On was
about the incredible longevity of the BJ, but in his research for the
piece, Helliker uncovered some inconvenient truth about bowling that
could not be ignored; thus the sub-headline Tough times strike bowling and bowling journalists, but one magazine recently turned 100.
Helliker’s interpretation seems to be ‘In spite of bowling’s
problems, the BJ somehow miraculously managed to survive 100
years.’
BJ President Keith Hamilton had mixed feelings about the article. In Jim Dressel’s Cyber Report, Hamilton said “I’m very appreciative of the praise given by the author about the magazine. But I
can’t help but be disappointed by the negative tone that the author set
in order to describe the industry. It was not fair to bowling in the
sense that it didn’t explain why Bowlers Journal made it to 100 years
in spite the reasons the author cited.”
Helliker is not some rookie writer. He is a 54-year-old senior
writer and editor for one of the most respected newspapers in the
world. In 2004, he jointly won a Pulitzer Prize in explanatory reporting with writing partner Thomas Burton for a groundbreaking examination of aneurysms.
To answer Keith Hamilton’s charge that he did not explain how
the BJ lasted 100 years, I would say he did offer a few reasons why
the BJ survived in a flailing industry. In addition to Hamilton, he
interviewed former BJ owner Mort Luby. Mort told him that two of
the reasons the BJ held on were the facts that most of the competition
lacked journalism credentials, and that Brunswick never wavered in
its advertising support, buying the back page of every BJ issue ever
published.
He also cited that the BJ was “Unafraid of controversy,” using
Jim Dressel’s Bowlitically Incorrect column as an example. He did
not mention Dressel by name, but he did confirm the philosophy with
PBA commissioner Tom Clark, who told him “If the PBA is doing
something that the Bowlers Journal doesn’t like, I’ll read about it.”
Helliker also interviewed professional bowlers Norm Duke and
Diandra Asbaty. Asbaty studied journalism at the University of Nebraska and is now a BJ writer.
The truth that may sting for some is Helliker’s factual description of where all bowling publications stand today, including the BJ.
“As a magazine that covers bowling, Bowlers Journal operates at the
intersection of bad and worse” he wrote. “The magazine industry is
troubled, losing advertisers to the Internet. And since 1980, the number of competitive bowlers in America plummeted from almost nine

million to about two million, leaving most bowling publications with
no place to go except broke. The latest to tumble: 20-year-old Bowling This Month, a magazine that published its final issue this autumn,
citing economic difficulties.”
Helliker even went so far as to interview Dr. Samir A. Husni,
director of the University of Mississippi’s Magazine Innovation Center. Husni shared that the BJ was one of only about 100 U. S. magazines that lasted 100 years out of about 10,000 magazines on the U.S.
market.
Dr. Samir expressed surprise that the BJ made it to the century
mark, saying “You hear people say that magazines are dead, and you
hear people say that bowling is dead. Yet here you have a 300-page
bowling magazine.”
What Now?
We hope that this eye opening article will be a wake up call for
bowling leaders from all corners of the industry, and that at least
some of them will finally realize that all of us together can make
bowling better. It is no longer just people like me and Jim Dressel
and a few others pointing out that changes are in order; it is a completely objective journalist with no skin in the game saying that bowling is in trouble. Yes, this is only one article of this type, but it is not
the first and won’t be the last.
Why do people like Helliker and Husni and millions more have
a negative impression of bowling? Because we don’t do a good job of
selling bowling the way it should be sold – as a sport first and foremost; like tennis, or golf, or name any other sport that doubles as a
recreation.
How can we turn this image problem around? By starting and
continuing a massive Public Relations campaign to promote the sport
side of bowling; By adding the PBA to the management structure
within the International Bowling Campus; by getting serious about
bringing back the women’s pro tour; by getting behind the new
World Bowling Tour with our ideas and our money; by truly getting
behind the International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame; by
supporting other organizations like the BNN, IBMA, and IBPSIA.
We often hear the words marketing and public relations in the
same sentence. In our view, bowling does a pretty decent job with
marketing, except it collectively does not spend enough money, but
falls way short on public relations. A good PR campaign can cure an
image problem in a few years.
Do bowling’s leaders from every corner in the industry have the
courage to stop preaching to the choir, take a very hard look in the
mirror, and make major changes? Or will they say ‘We have done
enough – we just need to continue on the same path until some fairy
dust inadvertently lands on us and everything will be alright and we
will all be happy.’
A few strong leaders got the ball rolling a few years ago when
the IBC was created – now is the time to finish what they started.
We all owe that much to bowling.

S
ince the beginning of bowling, there has always been
controversy concerning
lane conditions. Recently
on social media, this controversy
again was brought to light. The
main point of discussion referred to
what type of lane conditions do most
scratch bowlers wish to compete on.
Recently, a scratch tournament was
conducted on and advertised house shot which indicated the
scores would be high. This tournament drew a fairly good
field and the scores were indeed very high. This lead to the
discussion of what type of lane conditions would most
scratch bowlers prefer to bowl on during tournaments.
During the discussion, many great points were made so
I thought I would re-hash some points of the discussion.
First of all, I would encourage everyone to bowl tournaments, no matter what the lane condition might be. Bowling tournaments puts an emphasis on competition and allows a bowler the chance to see how they compete as an
individual. Even though some lane conditions are much
more difficult than others, even the easiest of lane conditions requires skill to score well. While it may be easier to
roll strikes on easy conditions, a great deal of the scoring
still requires consistency, good ball roll, and the ability to
pick up spares.

In fact, even on very easy lane conditions, the best
bowlers will still probably prevail, especially if the format
is long enough. The benefit that many bowlers feel on easy
conditions is that everyone has to potential to score well. I
am sure that nearly every bowler that bowls on house conditions feel they can score well. They are relaxed during
league play and have no doubt, rolled many high scores.
High enough scores in fact that make them feel that they
could compete with anyone on similar conditions.
As the lane conditions get more difficult, the better
bowlers will surface. Bowling on more difficult lane conditions requires more skill, more knowledge, and a better
understanding of the game than bowling on easier conditions demands. There is a reason the Pete Weber has won
multiple US Open bowling titles. Those bowlers that truly
enjoy bowling on difficult lane conditions to hone their
skills, probably despise bowling on house shot conditions
where lesser skilled bowlers can compete. The reason for
this is, as the lane conditions become more difficult, the
margin for error decreases. On typical house shot conditions, a bowler can have up to 10 boards of error margin, if
not more, and still hit the pocket, and more than likely
strike. A 10 board error on a difficult shot will result in
missing the head pin entirely, and more than likely, leaving
a 5 or 6 count difficult spare shot.
lows a bowler to see their weaknesses. It also makes them
better for typical house shot conditions. Bowling on more
difficult shots also prepares the bowler to compete on
nearly any bowling condition they may see. They learn to
adjust to the conditions quicker, both with their equipment
and the lane play. Looking back at the USBC Nationals
winners and top finishers, the score board is full of bowlers
from Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota. One of
the main reasons for this is bowlers from these areas bowl
leagues on difficult conditions and learn to break down the
lane as a team, in turn making them easier. I have seen
many bowlers who roll the ball very well, destroy to shot at
USBC Nationals. When you get a group of five bowlers
playing five different lines to the pocket, the shot becomes
very difficult and scoring will suffer. I have also seen many
good bowlers from the Denver area, some that average
220+ say they will never go to USBC Nationals again because they can’t compete. This is sad, but true. It is also
the reason that easy tournament conditions will always have
a good draw. But in my opinion, to truly get better, ask for
help and don’t be afraid of bowling on tougher conditions.
It will make you a lot better in the long run.
While I would encourage everyone to bowl every tournament they could, I would encourage every bowler wish- Wayne Stellick M.Ed., PBA Member; BPAA Member; USBC Silver

D.Y's Pro Shop Owner and Operator and Pikes Peak USBC Association Hall of Fame Member is averaging 250.07 after 15 weeks of awesome bowling. His series are 703, 819, 768, 761, 759, 762, 755, 774, 740, 674,
724, 730, 733, 790, and 761. His high game is 300 and he has had two 290's along with six 279's. This is quite an
achievement as Dennis is only bowling as a regular in this league and has only subbed twice in another league
with series of 765 and 794.
Ann McGee (winner) & Kyle Fujimoto (runner up)
Ann Mcgee at 64 years young won her first ABT title in Las
Vegas NV at the Gold Coast Bowling Center and is now a holder
of three titles. The other two titles were at Chipper's Lanes in
Bromfield CO. Ann took home the $1250.00 top prize of
the $3500.00 paid out to 18 bowlers who earned prize money.
Ann used her Storm IQ, drilled by Mike Tabuchi of Denver
CO throughout the tournament. She was the high qualifier with a
plus 108, and placed second after the semi-finals.
Her first match was against Henry Murphy and she defeated Murphy 241 to 195. In the final match the scores were much higher
and it was a close game; however, Ann defeated Kyle 259 to 249.
There were 70 entries this weekend and they used the PBA
Wolf 32' Pattern.
Ann would like to thank Layne and Frank for running a great
tournament and can not wait to participate in the next tournament
at Strike Zone.

So you may ask what equipment he used on this track to being the current high average bowler of Pikes Peak
USBC Association and the nation. He told me he almost exclusively uses the Arson Low Flare by Hammer.
Herb Walsh who works as an operator in D.Y's Pro Shop is carrying 230 in the Thursday's Classic King League
at King Pin Lanes and this is his only regular league.
This is awesome bowling by two of Colorado Springs' finest bowlers. If you get a chance drop in and visit these
two at King Pin Lanes and see what they can offer for your bowling experience.
